The Seer's Journey - DM Downrightamazed

Game Master downrightamazed

A young refugee girl, blessed by the gods with foresight, is accompanied by six warriors to one of the most dangerous places in the world, where a great hero will die.

@Feral Boy: No worries, made the exact same kind of mistake more than a few times myself ; )

@All: I was thinking, unless you guys plan to RP it out, maybe it would speed time and help DRA a bit if we all stated what kind of stuff we'd like to get?

The main things Jorzan would like are, in rough order:
-Something to block divination and scrying for Cassandra and himself. While I think it's fun, having our enemies be able to find us whenever they want, my shadowdancer friend would much prefer they not have such an easy time of it.
-He'd also like to get some more poison (or even better and cheaper perhaps the ingredients to make it himself)
-A few more Enhathladi arrows wouldn't be a bad thing
-A magical bow
-An upgrade for his weapon perhaps
-And perhaps something to help him get out of a tight spot even easier (offensive magic, freedomy type of thing maybe, a wand?)

I know he's very unlikely to be able to afford all of that with 11 grand, but that's his wishlist for now.

Also I've asked DRA if Jorzan would be able to take Tanel's Winterland Boots and Cloak of resistance to give to Cassandra. She'll for sure need some kind of magical protection from the elements and he'd rather have something permanent for her than rely on a spell. If DRA nixes the idea, Jorzan will buy something out of his share if he has to.

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer, 8th, Brass Draconic Bloodine

DM DRA: What is your estimated list value on the Rod of Widen Spell?

3000 for the Lesser Rod of Enlarge Spell
???? for the Lesser Rod of Widen Spell
1800 for the Handy Haversack

I'm assuming that's getting close to Karthan's cash tally, but if it isn't...how much would an "up to 6th level" Rod of Widen Spell have cost if one was available at all?

Jorzan: The Rope Trick Karthan casts is proof against scrying while people are in it - so it's a safe place to camp/rest/etc.

Everyone: Who does NOT have an item of Resist Elements?

Karthan, the Lesser Rod of Widen is 7,000gp.

Jorzan, I'm fine with you taking Tanel's stuff.

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

I think just Cassandra (and the monster?) don't have something. Oh, and well the horses! Guess we can get blankets for them at least? Also, maybe something for walking on the snow? (Like the winterland boots allow)

I know the rope trick does that Karthan, and that does help for a few hours at night, but they can still be tracked all during the day so our enemies will know where we are most of the time anyway. EDIT: Just checked and the only items I found to protect against scrying cost 35+ g's, so looks like those big red bull's eyes on Cass and Jor are sticking around for a while.

On another note, ok, we were at 55,060gp total..

Not including what he's giving to Cassandra, Jorzan is selling these of Tanel's things: mwk chain shirt, mwk heavy wooden shield, mwk longsword, , pouch containing 80 pp, pouch containing 244 gp

For an additional 1404 bringing it to 56464.

But we still need to know what the 4 rubies and one emerald are worth DRA?

That leaves a type I bag of holding and a rope of climbing up for grabs for whoever wants/needs them (Jorzan's gonna keep the campfire bead. Since they're all useful items figure we might as well keep them)

Okay, that's a request for a +1 undead bane mithral longsword from Kelne at 9,315 gp and a couple of zone of truth scrolls for 300.

M Human Summoner 8

The monster doesn't need anything. I can give him additional eidolon evolutions as needed and cast any spells with a target of "self" on him.

I don't have an item of resist elements, but I can cast endure elements on myself and anyone else without one.

Jorzan wrote:

They're a story element; you'll have to RP taking them to an appraiser in town.

M Brownin (Half Pale Skin/Half Dark Skin) Healer 8/Merchant 3

Anything you'd like jorzan to buy on the boy's behalf? Magic sling, bullets of blasting, pearl of power, anything

Chris Banks wrote:

Unless you feel a burning need to RP the purchase, just go ahead and add the new stuff to your gear and subtract from the trade-in pile as necessary.

Also, if you guys want to start leveling up, go ahead; it doesn't look like much else is gonna go down tonight in game-time, I don't think. Gray, you're already level 8 so you don't level up, obviously.

Ah, ok. Should we all be there for that? Or are you just gonna say "it's up to you" ; )

Also, I kinda feel like the Jorzan/Zorjan thing is holding up the rest of the party so anything you might want to do to expidite that is cool with me.

And yippee! Level!!

It's up to you. :-p

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer, 8th, Brass Draconic Bloodine

Karthan will attend to purchasing magic weapons and such with folks, and broker the appraisal of the gems. As a caravan guard he's been around this sort of thing before.

That works. Will Karthan be present for the questioning of Zanjor? If not, we can start the RP of getting the various gems appraised. Otherwise, I can wait 'til it's done. It's fine either way.

Karthan will focus on the gem appraisal; there are enough people to question Zorjan that he can get briefed later.

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer, 8th, Brass Draconic Bloodine

Karthan is updated.

DEX +1 (+1 to AC, Init, Ref save, +2 to ranged attacks with crossbow)

5 skill ranks, put in Bluff, Stealth, Spellcraft, Perception and Intimidate.

Spells:

Swapped Web for Darkness. Jorzan, expect this to be cast on you regularly...
Added Black Tentacles.
Added Open/Close

Trading in the partial wand of Darkness for a wand of True Strike while we're in town, now that I can cast Darkness on my own. Alternatively, if Jorzan wants it, I'll sell it to him for a part of his treasure share and buy the wand of True Strike. (Does Jorzan have UMD?)

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

Jorzan will take that deal on the wand. And you casting it on him is A OK whenever you want.

I'll give an exact list of what he's like Karthan to pick up a bit later on.

With the 3,500 that should give us all almost exactly 12,000gp each

i most likely wont be able to post much of anything until sunday afternoon so in interest of moving things along. Ill have gray go buy a weapon and supplies ( my cakes, wine, afew basic items. ] ill update my sheet in ASAP.

@DRA: feel free having me do so whenever. Im ok with doing it either current game night while Jorzan is talking to his brother. or right before we leave town. tho sooner the better. I dont feel the need to really RP basic shopping things. Unless you wanted me to do so at the bakery for some reason. =p

edit:

added to my sheet +1 Morningstar, flask of wine, 24 soul cake(cup cakes basically), bandages and 2 blankets.

Hit points: 1d10 ⇒ 10

Okay, sheet is updated. That's another level of fighter, a point of Con and ranks in intimidate, perception, knowledge (nature), stealth, sense motive and survival.

Might sell off the old sword and a kukri. I'll have to give some thought to some wands for those handy utilitarian spells too.

GrahamD, I suggest some OOC requests as to what characters might feel inspired to get for the Feral Boy, since he's unlikely to express such requests for himself.

Once everybody's sorted out their personal gear, we should discuss anything that can be lumped under the good of the party. After all, there's not much point saving up the gold. This is the last decent shopping opportunity for a while.

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

Does no one want the bag of holding & rope of climbing? If not I guess we can just sell them and have the money go to the party kitty.

Anyway, here's Jorzan's List o' Stuff:
Belt of incredible dexterity +2 4,000 gp
Dust of tracelessness 250 gp
Wand Pass without Trace (25 charges) 375gp
4 scrolls of Know Direction 50gp
Feather falling 2,200 gp

which leaves 5,125 minus whatever it is for Karthan's wand. (??)

DRA, is there any Enhathladi arrows in the city? If so, what do they cost?

Also are there the makings for Poison? This is an updated Poison List on the SRD and it also does a great job of clearing up the previous more murky poison rules. This is my thought if you think it fair, Jorzan can spend a certain amount on poison ingredients (say like 2,000 for example) and can buy them at half the price the poison itself would be. So similar to the rules for crafting magic items. Then when I have more time later I'll go through and say which ingredients he bought, and later in game make the rolls to see if he can craft them. What say you Master of the Game?

Male Half-Orc Sorcerer, 8th, Brass Draconic Bloodine

Karthan's wand will set you back 1,080 GP. It has 24 charges left on it; each lasts 3 minutes.

Karthan will hold on to the Bag of Holding - if nothing else, it's a good place to store food and other supplies. He'll suggest that Kelne or Justahl hold onto the Rope of Climbing.

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

Jorzan's Leveled

HP roll:1d8 ⇒ 8
Point to Dex
Level of Shadowdancer: +1 BAB, +1 Ref, Rogue Trick(Swift Poison), Shadow Illusion 1/day, Summon Shadow (although he's not making an appearance just yet ; )
Skill ranks in: Acrobatics, Craft(alchemy), Disable Device, Escape Artist, Knowledge(local), Knowledge(nature), Perception, Sense Motive, Stealth, Use Magic Device

Re Stuff: About the wand of darkness, just read the description and are we using it right? Cuz it says it just takes the light down one step, not automatically makes darkness. Am I reading that wrong?

Also taking a wand of True Strike, so 4375 left not including wand.

We also better get a ton of food and blankets for the horses, yes? Plus makings for a fire for them at night? Or maybe an extra campfire bead for a separate fire for the horses? S'only 250.

Male Human Cleric 9 (86/86HPs AC26 [domain spells used 0 and Normall spell used (one 1st&5thlvl). 0/10 channels used.)

before Gray comes back to the group from shopping I was thinking that Gray would take it upon himself to buy horses and a carriage. it holds 6 people including the driver and it would be a good way to keep Kelne and Cassie out of sight while we travel main roads.

I dont actually know where we are going but i figured out of sight out of mind.

Also any spells you guys want me to suggest to get ready before we head out? Im not sure if i should ask this ooc or ic so i thought i would check here first.

Oh yeah, forgot about that. I'll get you an arrow rundown later, but you can get pretty much any poison or poison ingredients you might want here. I'm fine with Poison crafting, but make sure there's not like a tool set or something you need, first.

let me know about crossbow bolts I might pick up acouple of each if there is any. If i remember right you said they are not magical but Alchemical correct? I was wondering if i could use the spell Abundant Ammunition ( lvl1 spell) on them

It occurs to me that actually the boy could use some enchanted sling bullets, if someone can get some with extra damage. His sling is +1, so he doesn't need any basic ones, but if we can find some with elemental damage, good aligned or whatnot, those could be really useful.

well if it comes down to it i can do align weapon or magic weapon for ya.

The great problem with carriages is that the minute you take them off the main roads, they break, get bogged down or otherwise have to be abandoned. And main roads aren't as common as one might like in the north. To say nothing of the difficulty in hauling the thing through the tunnels in the first place.

I am assuming that Grey and I will need to be brought up to speed after our acquisitions...

Yeah, Gray and Karthan; feel free to just handwave your individual arrivals whenever you wish.

M Human Summoner 8

If the boy talked, he would probably suggest using Karthan's fancy hat to disguise himself as Cassandra and then, with Kelne, taking the Wolfguards up on their offer to teleport them to their deaths.

The boy could then summon the monster, who would appear the next round, and while he was wrecking their $#!t, the boy could cast Locate Creature (Kevin), and lead Kelne to him.

I am catching a bus to Chicago in an hour and will have about 24-36 hours before I can post again.

The first part of the plan is good but then The Boy and Kelne would have to fight their way out of the Baron's stronghold, against who knows how many enemies, all by themselves, and while trying to protect a helpless boy. Meanwhile the rest of us would be tens? Hundreds? Of miles away with the only person who knew exactly where we were supposed to go, gone. I had been thinking almost exactly the same plan myself but then saw the problem with it.

Would it be possible to find a mage for hire who could teleport us there DRA? If so how much would it cost?

I had considered that, but if Kelne and Cassandra don't go with them within the hour, they could just kill Kevin, which is an even bigger problem.

Money is not your issue in Olmskodsv. Time, however, is.

M Human Summoner 8

Also, giving them Cassandra is NOT an option. Giving them the boy and Kelne is. It's presumptuous of me to speak for Kelne, but that's the only way the plan would work.

This is precisely why I want to find such a mage, for perhaps then they could teleport the lot of us directly near, or even into the Baron's castle. Maybe first we could get a Divination and Then a 'Greator Teleport'?

As an expansion on your idea, maybe 3 could go. Boy could sit on Kelne's shoulders and Jorzan could go Cassie, just need a scroll it Alter Self. But still my friend, you have only addressed the problem of Getting there. If you have a brilliant plan to have just Kelne, Boy and Monster overwhelm the Baron and his forces, rescue the Cassie's brother and somehow get all the way home safe, I'm honestly all ears.

Male Human Fighter 8, Ranger 3

Kelne's plan, as laid out, involves scrying on them and on Kevin to get a location before teleporting in. Since Jorzan's got ranks in use magic device, that makes him a second caster once they've rounded up the requisite scrolls.

The major problem there is that scrying has a one hour casting time, so even if we grab the scrolls and start casting right away, that still leaves a bit of an interval before the others can make with the teleporting. And of course there's the risk of spell failure.

By my count, greater teleport gets us six people teleported, including the caster, assuming Karthan can pass the caster level check. Regular teleport gets us four travelers, with a risk of being off target, but Jorzan could potentially make the DC29 use magic device check.

Other options are a bracelet of friends (either to bring people in or get Cassandra out), or boots of teleportation, both of which might be difficult to track down in such a limited timeframe.

I think finding someone to teleport the others there, or nearby, is a good idea. I don't want the three of them to have to find their way back on their own. I just think it might be a good idea for some of us to take them up on their offer, in a manner of speaking. It will at least buy some time.

Oh and Jorzan hasn't met her yet but I really think it would be a good idea to invite Justahl's ranger friend along as well, she seem like she'd be pretty good at ass kickery herself and we're gonna need all the help we can get.

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

Hey Gray, ICwise, it might be a good idea for Gray to share with the party what all he can do, because in a battle with undead, he and Justahl are going to be our major players. If the party has a better idea what their newest member is capable of, it can only help in the planning and execution of our plans, right?

I like several aspects of your plan Kelne, only problems I see are with the time of the scrying and the price of the boots or bracelet. Unless we steal the boots (which Jorzan would be willing to try) they're way out of our price range. BUT I did just have a great but fun ruining idea with the bracelet! If we could find one with just one charm it would only be 4,750gp. Then we could put it on Cassandra, she thinks of her brother and Whammo! There he is in the room with us! :D

Player wise, I'd still love to take on the Baron, but PC wise, that may be the best way to go. Or maybe a combo of both? Use that plan to rescue Kevin but still take down the Baron and goons so they don't bother us anymore?

EDIT(More): We could then maybe leave Cassie and Kevin up one of Karthan's rope tricks, (in Gray's room, cuz no one knows who he is!) with someone to guard the rope, then all of us go kick some undead ass!

@DRA: Ok so Re Poison Crafting here's the skinny:

Poison Crafting:
All crafts require artisan’s tools to give the best chance of success. If improvised tools are used, the check is made with a –2 penalty. On the other hand, masterwork artisan’s tools provide a +2 circumstance bonus on the check.

To determine how much time and money it takes to make an item, follow these steps.

Find the item’s price in silver pieces (1 gp = 10 sp).
Find the item's DC from Table: Craft Skills.
Pay 1/3 of the item’s price for the raw material cost.
Make an appropriate Craft check representing one week’s worth of work. If the check succeeds, multiply your check result by the DC. If the result × the DC equals the price of the item in sp, then you have completed the item. (If the result × the DC equals double or triple the price of the item in silver pieces, then you’ve completed the task in one-half or one-third of the time. Other multiples of the DC reduce the time in the same manner.) If the result × the DC doesn’t equal the price, then it represents the progress you’ve made this week. Record the result and make a new Craft check for the next week. Each week, you make more progress until your total reaches the price of the item in silver pieces.

If you fail a check by 4 or less, you make no progress this week. If you fail by 5 or more, you ruin half the raw materials and have to pay half the original raw material cost again.

Progress by the Day: You can make checks by the day instead of by the week. In this case your progress (check result × DC) should be divided by the number of days in a week.

Basically just need to roll, have a crafting kit that he picked up in Stormfare I believe, (or I created him with one, I forget).

Whenever you have a chance to list the info for the arrows I'll pick out what he takes. There may be a few other low ticket items I want but want to see how much gp he'll have left first.

Male Human Fighter 8, Ranger 3

Fair point on the boots. I'd gotten my prices mixed up for some reason. I think the bracelet's still in our price range if we pool unspent funds, but that might interfere with other spending plans. From an in-character perspective, while scrying and teleportation are fairly well-known spells and presumably readily available in scroll form, a bracelet of friends is rather more obscure. It's by no means certain the characters are familiar with them, and the odds of one being available for sale are fairly low.

Looking back at Cassandra's description of what happened to Kevin, it looks as if he's been put somewhere where he'd be difficult to locate or retrieve, and is unlikely to be brought out ahead of the exchange. That makes scrying on him or trying to extract him with a bracelet of friends problematic. Kicking in the front door doesn't seem to be the way to go for a successful rescue.

Kelne definitely intends to invite Trista along, but wants to get the plan in place and the necessary shopping underway as quickly as possible.

Male Human Rogue(Poisoner) 5/ Shadowdancer 6| AC23 T17 F18; HP 88/88, CMD 22, F/R/W 6/14/7, Percep +20 Drkvsn 60', Init +6

You may very well be right about the difficulty of finding the bracelet, but we won't know until we try. If we can find one, from it's description, it seems Cassandra would merely need to think of Kevin and he would appear. No scrying necessary. But you're right, we can't base our only plans on something we don't know for sure we can get. But from something Tesa said, maybe the baroness can help with that though.

Teleport has a DC27 and Greater Teleport a DC33. With a Hero Point Kelne and Jorzan have fair chances of making that, but will only three castings of the spell be enough for all of us? We're 8 including the ladies plus a bunch of Dwarves. But hey! what about shrinking?? Or Polymorph? Could we make everyone small or changed enough that we could bring everyone there in one or two shots? Reduce person mass?

C'mon everyone, this is a bit of a difficult challange, so let's keep those ideas rolling, there more brains we have in on this the quicker we'll come up with something good ; )

@DRA re Kelne's knowledge:
I understand and agree with what you were saying about Kelne only telling us what he chooses DRA, but what I had more been referring to was stuff that the Player does not know but that his character would. For example how far from here the castle is, what the castle is like, how hard it might be to sneak in, what the land around it is like, what kinds of creatures we might expect to face. Perhaps you could but these kinds of things, that Kelne the character would for sure know, in a spoiler for Kelne the player? If not, no problem. But if we at least know how far the castle is, we can maybe think of other ways to get there.

And finally, shall I just pick out a selection of Enhathladi arrows Jorzan will get and we can worry about how much they cost later?

Enhathladi arrows can be VERY expensive (thousands of gp per arrow) depending on the type, so I wouldn't recommend that. I'll get up a price/availability list; I keep forgetting to do that. We can handwave the shopping RP to keep things moving.

That would be awesome, thanks. Also, even little simple, standard bits of info about Castle Ormir-how far it is from here, how it's set up & defenses (is there a moat? Land around it? Is it on a mountain? In a field? etc.) that Kelne would know would be helpful.
