Welcome to The Big Drop, Partners…

Or what’s left of it. It’s been about 700 years since The Great Collide, when some idjit thought that summoning a giant rock from beyond the stars would be a good idea for some damned reason or another. Wasn’t there, myself, but I hear tell it was a right powerful conflagration. Sky burned for days. And the sun went away for about a hundred years, and brought the Long Winter. Hells, the blast alone took out the whole damn Tanguska Mountain in one shot!

What? What do you mean you ain’t heard of no Tanguska Mountain? Young’uns these days! Well, sure’n you heard of the The Scar, ain’t cha? That whole damn hole was a mountain range. Ain’t nothing but a cesspit of the meanest critters this side of Perdition now. At least, so’s I hear. I certainly ain’t dumb enough to ride down that way, and see for myself. My Gram raised me right. I listen to my elders, and if you a smattering of brains between the lot of ya, ye’ll do the same.

But like I was saying, The Great Collide…caused quite a stir, as you can imagine. I do remember those early days – the chaos, the fear, the bloodshed. Some days I wish my recollection weren’t quite so crystal clear. But only a fool forgets.

Them’s was some bad, hard times. And folk had to do bad, hard things to get by. And ain’t none that lived through that and made it out without some stain or another on their soul. Any who tells you different is an idjit or a liar.

Of course, that wasn’t nothing compared to when the Old Gods died. Now that was a right mess, yes, sir. Some say it was two hundred years to the day of the Great Collide, but that’s h&##$$*~~. It was close though. I’ll give ‘em that. Lots of stories out there about what killed them and why. But I’ll bet my last tooth they’re all wrong. Folks just feel better putting a reason to something – even if none ain’t there to be found.

Where was I? Right, the Old Gods. People didn’t have much then. And for some, The Old Gods was all they had. And when they went away – well, let’s just say there’s a reason why we use the phrase “lost his religion” to describe a madman.

Anyways, the New Gods came. Couldn’t rightly tell you exactly when, but my personal guess is “just in time” because The Master only knows what we would have done if left to our own devices any longer.

Things got better after that – slowly, but they got better. Some of you young’uns like to claim these is bad, hard times. Idjits! You don’t know bad, hard times! Not like what came before, back when the Gods still had names!

Ah, hells, listen to me. Sound like an old relic, don’t I. Well, I am, and damned proud of it. Still, that’s no excuse to be inhospitable. Like I said, partners, welcome to The Big Drop. Life can get a bit rough here in these parts, but what’s the alternative?
