Grimlak |
As the deck swayed uneasily under the squat dwarfs feet he thought, Looks like they be try to bottle neck us. Might be a trap. He draws his battle-axe as he peers toward the shoreline, "Be wary me fellow Silver Shields. It might be bein an ambuscade."
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Zardu Zuul |
Zardu draws his shortbow and knocks an arrow while scanning the area for ambushers. He was kneeling by the edge of the boat using the side as cover. "They don't seem to friendly at least."
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
Looking at the wagons and the reaction of the crew Ryenalt comments, mostly to himself.
"Clearly an ambush, not sure if it is for us or another, but you don't get to be my age just stumbling blindly into this sort of thing. Best to be on guard"
He calls force a small ball of acid, ready to launch it at an attacker as he watches the port (left) side of the boat.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11

perception Tindertwig: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
Liam: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
You also can easily see the two chains attached to the ends of the wagons and where they are half buried along the shore no doubt how they pull the wagons out of the way of the river traffic when they are done.
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
Straining his eyes Ryenalt removes his glasses and moves them in and out in-front of his eyes, trying to get a better focus.
"Hmmm, it would appear the blockage has not been here long. What else? Someone may have filled in some dirt too though it might be moving. My eyes may not be what they once were."
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
Pointing and shouting at the mounds, the angry little goblin screams,
Yous bees da stupidestes gobs evers!
Rippit!, comes the miffed croak from Dirtbag.
Tindertwig looks at the others.
Grimlak |
As the dwarf hears Tindertwig's warning Grimlak thinks and smiles for the first time in days, "Goblins! He yells , "Come out you little green buggers!"
Wish I had fireball
Zardu Zuul |
Zardu casts guidance on himself doubting they will listen to his words."Surrender, flee or face our wrath. You'll not catch the Silver Shields of guard this day!" With that he awaited their response.
Nizvit the Kobold |
"Ah. Goblins. But what kind of goblin sets up such an elaborate ambush yet can not hide properly. Aren't most goblins..." he looks over to Dirtbag " Yes. I saiz most Goblins, don't me?" he then continues "Rather dim witted for this kind of attack?"

Liam Kali |
whoops, my bad
Duke moves to the edge of the boat and begins barking at the mounds.
Liam draws his blade standing beside his favorite dog.
come on out you cowards. best you just run away. I am Liam, the greatest swordsman on these waters
intimidate: 1d20 ⇒ 13

DM The nines |
It was rather comical... for a moment despite the yelling it appeared they were going to stay in thier shallow holes... then the barking began. A squeel of terror erupted from the holes and the piles of dirt became brownish orange colored goblins who all turned and ran from the river as fast as the could in terror.
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
St...stu...stupiddd gobs 'fraid of a dog!, Tindertwig stammers (hiding behind the dwarf).
Rippit!, comes a nervous sounding croak from Dirtbag.
Zardu Zuul |
"We will have to go ashore to move them out of the way, perhaps they left something of use behind in their hurry." It would have been better to try to redeem them but maybe they'd think on their life choices. "I saw chains that can help us drag them back if people are so inclined."
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
"Yes, yes. Always good to see what the enemy may have left, assuming they were our enemies and not just opportunists. Some of you more spry folks should lead the way I think."
Ryenalt moves to the side of the boat to follow the others if they head off.
Grimlak |
"Good boy, Duke!" the sturdy dwarf acknowledged. He is about to pat the little goblin on the head to comfort him but thinks better of it. He pulls his arm back and winks at the toad instead.
Grimlak agreed and addresses the riverboat captain, "Capt'n it be lookin like we be needin to go to shore."
Nizvit the Kobold |
"With some team effort. We can overcome this obstacle. I am willing to help in any way I can. " he looks at Tindertwig
"Yous much braver den dem gobbos. Nizvit glad to getz yous as friend" he grins widely

Liam Kali |
yeah, See, I am near famous, soon everyone will know of me. Liam boasts, taking credit for chasing the goblins away.
Liam goes to the boat captain once the goblins are gone, you need help steerin to the shore?
Zardu Zuul |
Zardu shakes his head smiling and puts his bow aside readying his blade. "Well I'm ready to go onto the banks, it'd be nice if Duke and his famous companion came along."
DM The nines |
A couple of small boats were set over the side to take you folk to the banks. Its not terrible difficult, however going down the rope later will take some effort.
DC 5 climb check to avoid falling... Except you Liam if you try to carry Duke down, it will be a DC 10 check for you.
Once ashore you do indeed see a set of chains that you could in theory pull to remove the obstacles enough for the river boat to easily pass through. There is no sign of the goblins nor wealth left behind.
Its a DC 20 STR check to move the obstacles, but we will take the highest roll and everyone who assists whom beats a DC 10 STR can add an additional +2 top the highest roll. You will need to do it at least twice per side of the river, although you really only need to clear one side.
Zardu Zuul |
Zardu cast guidance on himself before trying to climb down, he didn't want to be planted on his rear if the goblins had found their courage once more.
Climb: 1d20 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 + 1 = 9
It wasn't too graceful but it would do and he got down without injury. He then turned upwards to help Liam with Duke.
Assisting Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Looking down at the chains he started looking for firm footing. "If ye assist me I think we can get these moving but they're hefty enough as they are with all this mud about."
Grimlak |
Grimlak grumbled to himself as he climbed down, "Best hurry we've waisted enough time already."
Climb: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
"These chains be covered in mud. I can't be getting a good grip," the dwarf complains.
STR: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Zardu Zuul |
Str Hopefully with assistance bonuses to come.: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
Oh ok he did it by himself
Zardu digs his heels in and starts pulling getting it moving easily. He tries to capitalize on his momentum by continuing to pull as sweat beads on his brown
2nd Str: Hopefully with assistance bonuses to come.: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Grimlak |
Grimlak watched grimaced as Zardu easily move the first obstacle out of the way. He positions himself to help with the second one. Grasping the chain in his meaty Dwarven hand he pulls with all his might. STR: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
No help here.
Nizvit the Kobold |
He knew his small frame would not be a benefit to the task at hand, so he takes up a vigil with his bow. In case the goblins return with reinforcements
"I have your backs my fellow companions. Do not fear" he calls to those working the blockages

Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
Climb: 1d20 ⇒ 14
"Well, I am not the best climber but that was not so bad."
He watches the others work keeping a watch on the area, in case the goblins loop back around, as best he can.
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
Tindertwig laughs with glee, as he scampers down the rope and into the waiting boat.
Climb +4 taking 10
Wees gots yous gobbons! Yous runing goid!, the laughing and screaming goblin directs toward the mounds from the boat.
On shore...
Tindertwig begins searching the area for tracks.

Liam looks over the side then at Duke. Duke looks back with that curious doggie head tilt. alright, lets go explore
Liam then grabs Duke to make his way down the rope.
climb DC 10: 1d20 ⇒ 13
making it down with relative ease, He lets Duke go play and sniff out any goblins, while Liam goes to assist in removing the obstacle.

Zardu Zuul |
Zardu puts his hands on his knees as he gets his breath back. "We should be able to get past now yes?" He calls out to the ship. He rummages through his bag before leaving a wooden holy symbol of Sarenrae dangling from a branch of a nearby tree. "Not that it is out of the way we could smash or remove the wheels so they can't do it again easily."
Grimlak |
"Yep, that should be doing it. The boat should be able to pass," the dwarf agreed with Zardu. He looks to Liam and Tindertwig and gruffly reminds them, "Our job ain't chasing no goblins and we sure ain't getting paid for it."
DM The nines |
Liam You can easily follow their tracks with Duke's help, if you choose to.
You have easily cleared one side of the river enough for your boat to get through. There is the wagon on the other side still in the water.
Zardu You can easily remove the wheels without damaging them with a disable device check dc 15 (and use it untrained in this case if you wish) or alternatively you could hack into it at sensitive points and destroy the wheels, axle, etc. Your choice.
And for the firebug gobl...err types out there the upper half of the wagon is actually pretty dry and old, a torche would set the problem alight pretty quickly.
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
"Ahh the exuberance of youth. Well my new friends what shall we do? Move on and let the less enlightened goblins do this again to other people or hunt them? Move on with our journey?"
Ryenalt pauses as if waiting for a decision but quickly shouts back to the boat.
"Captain, if we deal with these scoundrels can the boat wait for us or would be we walking? I don't want to be stuck walking."
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
Tindertwig (nose literally to the ground), yells out (although muffled).
Wees needs to find des stupid gobos! Dey no good!
Rippit?, comes a confused croak from Dirtbag.
Liam Kali |
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with Tindertwig. maybe we can take care of them quickly and get back.
Liam draws his sword and stands beside Tindertwig ready to go.
Zardu Zuul |
"We can attempt it though I would warn they'll probably either try to ambush us or go to ground somewhere the majority of us are to large to follow and at a disadvantage." Still he draws a his scimitar and nods.
Grimlak |
Grimlak shrugged his shoulders and agrees, "Aye, best be quick about it then." He takes out his axe and inspects the blade, satisfied with its edge he grins.
Nizvit the Kobold |
Seeing that the group is deciding to leave the boat he decides to go join them. But he knew getting to them would take a bit of time
"I too shall join you on this venture. Perhaps my stature will come to be a benefit in rooting out the goblins that caused this situation!" he calls from the boat
-Posted with Wayfinder
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
Ryenalt looks at the boat one last time hoping that it will wait for them, mumbling to himself.
"Shouldn't have moved the boats quite yet, could be a long walk."
He will fall in line behind the others with a shrug as they move out.
Grimlak |
With Ryenalt's words Grimlak looks back at the boat and mutters, "I hope we be judging the Capt'n right and he still be here whe we be getting back."
DM The nines |
Fear made the the brownish orange goblins fast, and the further away from the river the more clear their trail became... and and even without the trail a few miles from the river you could easily see the low lying wooden barricade like walls built atop a rise in the ground.
They clearly made their way there, but those walls certainly dont look like something a goblin would make. they were too orginized.
You all are a good distance away still, how do you want to approach if at all?
Zardu Zuul |
Zardu peered at the walls in the distance for a moment.
Appropriate Knowledge that isn't Religion: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Should I have even bothered rolling, it's Isger, connecting the dots shouldn't necessarily be hard.
Ryenalt The Archaeologist |
Ryenalt only grumbled here and there during the walk and most of it was not serious only making the noises of an old man being forced to go hiking.
"Well now what do we have here now. A long walk to a fort of some sort?"
He doesn't give it much of a look assuming there is nothing of the arcane in this.
"So, we are off mission already, do we raid an unknown fort or visit the tavern we were sent to? Both have there appeals so I am content to let you young folks make that choice."
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
Still chewing a rat tail, Tindertwig stands amoung the group, pondering the fort. Scratching his head in deep thought (Rippit!, comes irrated croaks from Dirtbag), the little green goblin turns to the others.
Wees be visiting dere?
Grimlak |
Grimlak smiled at the lone goblin in their midst, "Do you and the toad be thinking you can see sneaking into that fort?"
Sugesting Tindertwig sneaks into the fort and finds out what's going on.
Tindertwig&Dirtbag |
The goblin laughs.
Dey bees orange silly dorf! Mees be stickings out like yous beings a elfs! Hahahaha!
Rippit!Rippit!, giggles the toad.
DM The nines |
It occurs to most of you (not you Tindertwig sorry) that the goblins appeared orangeish brown probably do to the crawling about and hiding in dirty holes in the ground to ambush a ship. not from any natural coloring. Orangish colored goblins? Pah that Ridiculous!
Zardu
Indeed you think you are looking at the beginnings of a hobgoblin fortress, no doubt either refugees from Isgars usually feeble attempts to keep the Chitterwood humanoids in check, or perhaps something more diabolical.... but probably too tough a target for the six of you.
