Ashlyn collects the hatchet

You now have a hatchet - well done! :)

Fleur is unable to identify any creature which would make tracks like this, although it seems similar to how she has heard the trails of army ants described.

Ashlyn can track the path easily - those who made it clearly were not trying to hide.

Sarine, examining the tracks closely, can make out some pertinent details. The trail isn't perfectly uniform but is always close to 10 feet wide, allowing for varience in the ground. Looking very closely the trail is made up of hundreds of small puncture marks which have left tiny pointed impressions in the ground. There must have been hundreds of tiny creatures to created this trail.

"We'd better be careful if we do investigate later." Evie cautions. "A swarm like this is probably really dangerous - those cockroaches were difficult enough!"

She wracks her brains for anything she might have read that could possibly explain these creatures. She falls in next to Fleur to compare notes. "Have you ever heard of anything like this Fleur?"

Sarine offers to give one of her alchemist fire to anyone that lacks a tool for fighting swarms. "Let's keep these handy in case something is lurking about. We've been delayed enough though. Let's get back to the Peregrine."

"Agreed. We don't have time to go chasin' down strange tracks just now, let's make for the ship."

The rest of your journey is uneventful, with no sign of whatever left those strange tracks, or of anything else for that matter. You gather that much of the island is covered in pine and oak trees of considerable size, and in areas where there are no trees a dense layer of knee high shrubs proves just how fertile the island is.

In time you reach the second landing site, where the shoreline arcs to the northwest before hooking sharply to the south - forming a sheltered cove where the Peregrine now rides its anchor. Pulled up to the shore is the ships boat with three or four sailors refilling water casks at a nearby stream. Ramona is waiting with the boat and hurries over when you arrive.

"You're here. That's a relief - there have been some... unexpected issues on board. I'll tell you all about it but first - the more important news. What happened? How is the colony?"

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

"Unfortunately, the colony was in a disastrous state when we arrived, Ramona," Sarine states somberly. "We didn't find anyone alive at the site, although there was some indication that some of them may have fled to another location. There may have been infighting among the colonists as well. Talmandor's Bounty was infested with native creatures, prominently some large insects that kept popping up. While we drove out any creatures that we found, we can't say that what is left of the settlement is safe: the wall is unfinished."

Sarine pauses her report for a moment before continuing on. "We can give you more details when we're back on the ship. We recovered some documents from the settlement that might tell us more when examined in depth as well. What has happened on board the ship?"

Aurelian nods, clearly not surprised to hear about the issues.

"Yes," he says gravely, "it is probably to be understood. We can tell everyone that Aurelian Fache has returned, though, and they will feel safe and not sad, and this will resolve any of the problems."

It is good that Aurelian Fache can solve such problems so easily.

"And if there are men involved Aurelian?" Evie asks, unable to resist a little mischief in her thankfulness to have returned to the Peregrine. "It was quite incredible Ramona, so many different plants - lots of plants I've only read about. I'm sure Lyra will be really interested! Oh and we saw this strange track in the forest..."

Evie's cheerful chatter carries on most of the way back to the ship as she seemingly tries to avoid mention of any more problems for as long as possible.

Fleur listens intently, wanting to learn more of this trouble aboard that Ramona mentioned. "We've given you the gist of what we found... please do tell us of the problems aboard since we left."

"So the colony is intact - at least in terms of buildings." Ramona concludes. "That's good. We don't have the supplies to return the whole colony to Andoran - so our best course will be to move back down the coast to Talmandor's Bounty. That is" she adds, suddenly gloomy. "If the ship can get there."

She stares moodily at the approaching ship. "After we dropped you off the voyage up here was fine, good wind and people were nervous but not too much so. Then, just as we passed the headland over there, the ship suddenly lost all its speed. We were crawling through the water - and the strangest thing was that we still had sails full of wind! The anchor wasn't down, we had clear water beneath us, a couple of the sailors swam around the ship, but there was nothing there that they could see - certainly no kraken or anything like that." She says with a slightly nervous laugh.

"People are getting nervous now - I heard a few mutterings about the whole venture beings cursed, and I'm beginning to agree with them! But hopefully if we can work out what's holding the ship up and get back to the colony then people will relax and thing's will get better. Would you mind taking a look at the ship and its hull? You've all proved yourselves to be highly competent and we need that right now!"

Chelaxian Bloodrager 8

Sarine exhales a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. A stuck ship or even a curse was one thing: they could deal with that somehow. At least the Peregrine hadn't turned to infighting. She nods to Ramona.

"We'll do everything we can. Curse or no curse, this land is home now."

"Oh, dear!" Ashlyn exclaims. "Of course we'll examine the hull and ship. Elizar and I are excellent swimmers. We'll examine it from outside and underneath." Turning to her companions she asks, "What do you think? Perhaps some of you should take a rowboat to examine the outside, and some can examine the ship interior? If magic's involved, we'll need a someone who knows how to detect spells in each group." She looks at Evie and Fleur, clearly thinking they should be in different groups than each other.

"Is there anything else you can tell us about when the ship suddenly stopped? Did anyone hear anything? Or see anything strange? Did anyone get an odd feeling beforehand?"

We're on the beach, right? Do we need to take the rowboat to get closer to the ship, or can we swim there?

Ashlyn nods. "Agreed. This is important."

Halfway to the ship, in the boat.

"I'll stay in the boat." Evie offers, not entirely keen on a swim this late in the day - no matter how pleasant the weather. "You're right Ashlyn, we should have people detecting magic above and below the water!" And not getting all the important papers we found damp! the librarian in the back of her mind reminds her.

"Besides - I need to keep the papers from the colony dry, they might have clues in them!" Evie reminds the group in turn, before turning to Ramona.

"We found a list of the original colony, with marks against the names - it wasn't in the main colony office either. I'll show you once we get back on board ship, see what you make of it."

Explanations over Evie faces forward again and begins to examine the ship as best she can while the longboat approaches.

If everyone's ready to go in now:

If no one stops him, Aurelian finishes shedding his armor -- then pulls his shirt sleeve out from under his buckler and drops that on the floor of the boat as well, alongside his armor.

Undoing his belt, he carefully lays his sheathed sward along the gunwale and slips out of his trousers -- confirming that he indeed does not wear undergarments -- before belting the blade back around his hips.

"Very well, Aurelian Fache is ready," he says, diving in once the others are similarly set.

Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

He's divested himself of all his gear other than his buckler, belt and blade.

As Aurelian strips, so too does Ashlyn. She drops her backpack into the boat, takes off her belt. Unstraps her studded leather armour, and then pulls of her clothes--pants, shirt, shoes. She remains in only her undergarments (tight little shorts and a tube top) and her ring. She straps her belt, dagger and it's sheath back on, then turns...

"So am I Aureli--"

Realizing Aurelian is butt naked, she tries not to stare--poorly. She blushes brightly, then dives into the water without bothering to finish her sentence.

Once in the water, both Ashlyn and Elizar seem happy and at ease. Or, at least, Elizar seems less mournful than is typical.

Ashlyn's a fine swimmer, but Elizar takes to the water like he belongs there--and judging by the watery goo that always drips off of him, perhaps he does.

Sarine watches with some interest as Aurelian begins to disrobe. That interest turns to surprise and then mortification as she realizes just how far he intends to go, however. Even the men in the militia camp never did that in front of her. In her shock, she doesn't manage to get out a protest.

With the others in the water, he swims toward the ship, looking for what might be wrong.

Maybe give the air bubble to Fleur? I assume that would let her use her abilities down here (though maybe that's not necessary with her race/class). I don't think Aurelian or Ashlyn need the air bubble as much, though it certainly can't hurt.

LOL.

Moving on!

Fleur divests herself of her outer layers before nodding to Jenner for the air bubble and sliding into the water to join Aurelian, Ashlyn and Elizar. She slides through the water as though born there and soon passes Ashlyn and Aurelian despite their headstart.

Aurelian Per: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Elizar Per: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Fleur Per: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

Perhaps despite their slow speed it is Ashlyn and Aurelian who spot the oddity first. Three colourful, very thin fishes are hanging off the Peregrine's hull. It doesn't seem possible that they could be the cause of such a large ship slowing, but they're the only thing out of place given than the ships hull was careened at the last waterpoint - a bare two weeks ago.

The fish don't appear to have noticed you. What would you like to do?

Silly creatures. Fishes should avoid getting near Aurelian Fache's boat, so they don't end up being dinner for Aurelian Fache's stomach, he thinks, a smile crossing his face.

He kicks furiously in the direction of the boat, cutting through the water as if he were a fish too but he's rarely practiced his swordwork underwater and the lack of a strong foundation for his base leads to a clumsy -- at best -- thrust.

Evie blushes furiously, possibly even more than Ashlyn. "Sarine, I think you'll find that Gorndias defines a monster as 'a creature possessing less than human intelligence or considerable abnormalities in physique.'" Her voice trails off...

"But I don't think even that can be classed as abnormal." Evie's voice is quieter now, "Can it?" That's how I imagine this conversation ending! :D

She starts singing to inspire when she sees Aurelian arm himself and swim toward the hull with obvious intent to engage them... if she knows what they are, she'll include some information in her song.

also note that Fleur has the amphibious trait, can breathe water and air equally well... so should be fine underwater without the air, unless she needs it to sing, which doesn't make a lot of sense... sound can carry quite well underwater... I will wait for the gm's ruling on that... if she doesn't need it, go ahead and designate another target for it

Aurelian Fache didn't realize Fleur could breathe water, so Aurelian wouldn't think she'd need the air bubble. Up to you if you want it, Ashlyn. Aurelian Fache assumes we're not so deep that she couldn't stay on/near the surface and leave underwater stuff to him and Elizar, so maybe Aurelian should take it?

Sounds good. You take it.

Assuming the worst--as always--Elizar swims at the strange fish stuck to the side of the boat and lashes out at them in anger.

Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

As mentioned in the discussion tab, as a drowned phantom, Elizar takes no penalties from fighting underwater with his natural attacks.

Ashlyn swims under water, examining the ship. When she notices the fish she swims up for a breath of air and dives back down, getting right alongside them.

Swim: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21

Once she's beside the fish she punches at it--hoping to get it off the ship.

Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 - 2 = 16
Damage: 1d3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Dealing only half damage, which makes: 2.

Because I took a full-round action, this round counts as two rounds I've held my breath.

In the boat, Jenner keeps an eye on the dark water, frowning in concern.

(Fine with the air bubble going to Aurelian, of course. As far as detecting magic, Jenner doesn't have knowledge Arcana so technically would have no way of knowing about the aura. But:)

While waiting, Jenner mutters a short prayer and looks at the hull. "Some sort of screwy magic on there, I can tell that much."

At Jenner's cue Evie too examines the boat with magical sight. Take 10 on Spellcraft for 17

"It's some sort of transmutation spell! Perhaps that's why the ship is so slow! So either something is slowing it down either above or under the ship. If it's not on the ship then it must be underneath!" She looks suddenly worried. "Are we going to have to go in then?"

Sarine brings the boat up to the Peregrine's side and Ramona swarms her way up the rope ladder that is offered. "Be careful." She offers. Being this close allows Evie and Jenner to examine the ship closely - something has magically slowing the ship almost as though its speed is being sucked away.

Under the water Fleur begins to sing, the sound travels remarkably well, but she cannot identify the fish. Aurelian closes on the fish with a few powerful strokes but is unable to aim an accurate thrust underwater. Ashlyn has more luck and strikes on of the fish, although the water lessens the impact somewhat. Finally Elizar follows Ashlyns example and strike at the fish - although his blow does little more than hers.

Two of the fish detach themselves and attempt to bite at Ashlyn and Elizar. The final one stays stubbornly attached to the ship.

Fish 1 vs. Ash: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Fish 2 vs. Eli: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

One fish attaches itself to Elizar and the phantom wails in confusion.

No damage to Elizar but he a -1 penalty to Dex and must make a DC12 will save or be slowed as the spell.

Sarine Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16 - I'm guessing that's enough to hear Fleur's song from up on the boat. If not, we can back things up.
Demon Cat Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

"That's Fleur...they might be in trouble," Sarine remarks as she removes her backpack. "We better go help." She draws her dagger as she jumps off the rowboat into the water.

"Blurble blurble, blurble blub," Aurelian tells the fish as he swims toward Ashlyn, most of his words lost in the churning water. "Blub blub Aurelian Fache, blub burble BLUBBLE!"

He stabs at the creature, though again the strange footing -- or the complete lack of it -- makes it hard to follow through with the forms gained from years of training.

Aurelian Fache is not used to fighting in the water; other things, yes -- what happened to Borich, I wonder -- but he shall have to find ways to work with his other sword in the water...

Swim: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13 I'm hoping it's calm water, though I'm not sure I need to move depending on where the fish is, as the map indicates I'm close to Ashlyn.

Rapier: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 6 + 1 = 14 -2 if I failed my Swim check, +2 if I'm flanking
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

And if it attacks me; these may be modified as above:
Parry (DC=attacker's roll): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Riposte (if parry succeeds): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
