Fizz examines the vats closer. Each stone vat is 15 feet on a side, seems to be open at the top, and fronted by a huge steel door with a quick-release lever. As stated before, an action can open the vat. They look exceptionally sturdy, no power you possess could harm them in any significant way.

The goblin in black suddenly turns toward you, revealing that he is Modra! The dark creeper snarls as he reaches for the closest vat, pulling down on a great lever next to the door. He dodges out of the way of a blast of steam. As the door opens, it spills a huge mass to the ground in a fountain of viscous green fluid. Out of it rises an enormous two-headed boar, bellowing as it claws the ground! As the steam clears, you notice that Modra is nowhere to be seen!

Crap. I just realized I have 2 attacks, not one, but made only one attack on the brown guy. I guess it wouldn't have mattered because that second d20 roll would have been a 6 anyway, judging from my perception roll.

Varis, come over here and let me patch you up.
Can I search for Modra? Investigation or Perception or whatever?

DM RyckyRych |
Haldor, you can move somewhere and then use your Action to use Perception. If you use your action to heal I would take your passive score since you didn't directly interact with Modra last turn like Fergus did.
Fizz heals up the paladin while Varis considers moving to have his wounds healed as well.
Varis Starflower |
Moved, oh and by the way the passive perception is 16, as an elf Varis is auto trained in perception (keen senses) so the modifier is +6. Forgot about that when first making the character.
Haldor Dagsson |
Haldor casts Cure Wounds on Varis.
Healing: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Well, at least it's something.
Haldor is looking for Varis using passive Perception 17 since he used his action to heal Varis.

Nobody can seem to spot the elusive Modra, however he does find you, specifically the gnome!

Modra then backs away and runs off behind the crates again!
Fergus and Fizz get AoOs.
If you have a passive Perception of 14 or higher you see Modra by the boxes in the southeast corner of the room as shown on the map. If you do not you can find him by using your action to look for him and you roll a 14 or higher.
Yes, the vat is a hard corner, you can't move diagonally along the corner of that square.

The combined effort of the party overwhelms Modra and he is killed! The party searches the area for clues as to what Modra and his underlings were attempting to do here.
Among the things that are fairly evident: the area where the shadowgoblins were working, you note damage to the great pipes channeling the lava flow, though it appears superficial.
There are a few bodies here. You figure that these dark creeper guards were killed guarding against Modra’s incursion.
Within the vats, you can see various creatures in the midst of a dark transformation.
Among all of the bodies you find about 120 gold pieces, a potion of healing, Modra's dagger worth 40 gold pieces due to its custom make.
What do you do?
