Fergus can't seem to hit the elusive creature!
Fergus
Fizzlebomb
Varis
Haldor (-3 HP)
Sain (-4 HP)
Paul
Goblins! [Grunt 2 (-2)]
Everyone except Fergus!
Fizzlebomb |
Fizzlebomb moves towards the bar and throws Acid Splash at grunt 1 & 2 in the corner.
Acid Splash 1 or 2 targets within 5 feet of each other range 60ft
attack: Dex Save vs. 13: 1d6d1d6 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6
I've got no idea why I'm getting such a strange damage roll. Have tried several different ways of posting and keep getting same roll confusion.
DM RyckyRych |
@Fizz : Probably a bracket out of place or something. If you need to roll just one die you can omit the "1" and just type d6. So you should have typed {dice=attack: Dex Save vs. 13}d6{/dice} (using the proper bracket, of course).
Paul misses the hobgoblin and doesn't get the chance to grapple him!
Dex Saves: 2d20 ⇒ (14, 6) = 20
Grunt 1 evades the acid but his buddy isn't so lucky! I'll take the average of those rolls for 3 points of damage.
Fergus
Fizzlebomb
Varis
Haldor (-3 HP)
Sain (-4 HP)
Paul
Goblins! [Grunt 2 (-5)]
Haldor and Sain may act!
DM RyckyRych |
Dex!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
The little grunt dodges the sacred flame of the tempest cleric!
Sain!
DM RyckyRych |
Going to DMPC Sain this round so we don't get bogged down, which can happen in PbP games.
Sain attacks the goblin next to him, killing the enemy with his offhand!
Shortsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Shortsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Slash!: 1d6 ⇒ 6
The hobgoblin attacks his would-be grappler, Paul, striking him with his longsword in the side!
Longsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20 for Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
The poker players fight back against the goblins!
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 1
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Scimitar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Scimitar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
One of the rabble falls as a goblin slashes his neck with his scimitar! Meanwhile, the fire continues to grow more dangerous, nearly reaching the gnome wizard. The smoke is starting to become troublesome to those inside the tavern as well!
PARTY UP!
Paul "Lions Breath" Freeman |
{b}Some one put out that damned fire![/b]
i then attempt a grapple on the hobgoblin
grapple: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
if I succeed i will drag him out of the building.
Varis Starflower |
Attack the hobgoblin (#2) in my grill.
shortsword attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
offhand as bonus
unarmed attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Fergus McDammitson |
Seeing that my companions appear to have the hobgoblin under wraps, I run toward the patrons and goblins in the back of the room. I reach the limits of my movement speed (shown on Roll20) and chuck a javelin at Goblin Grunt 1.
Javelin attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
I begin swearing at and insulting both goblins in hopes of drawing their attention away from the patrons. Come ye craven cowards! I'll roast thy yellow bellies and feed thee to the pigs! Swine eating swine! How appropriate!
I also begin to look around the tavern for a source of water to extinguish the flames.
If this is allowed as a free action then my Perception roll is: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13.
DM RyckyRych |
Don't use Roll20. You had it right, you just left out the one bracket in the very front, Haldor.
Hob ST: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
The hobgoblin breaks the grapple attempt!
Hob DX: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
The hobgoblin moves right into the spell and takes Flame!: 1d8 ⇒ 3 points of damage! He then gets stabbed once by Varis!
Fergus then skewers a goblin to death, however he doesn't seem to notice a source of water that would be sufficient to douse the raging fire!
Sain and Fizzlebomb!
Fizzlebomb |
I move a couple of steps back, looking for sand buckets that would have been used in a tavern to put out fires or spittoons that could do the job as well.
perception: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Fizzlebomb then apparently winks of out existence as he is no longer on the roll20 map. If he were there he would have moved to the door north of the fireplace and opened it looking for said objects to douse the fire.
DM RyckyRych |
Fizzlebomb comes back to this plane and opens the door, finding a storage room. Nothing that would be able to douse a fire of this size, a bucket brigade will be needed now.
By my count, you have one square of movement left and a standard action if you wish to use it, Fizz.
Sain!
DM RyckyRych |
Botting Sain again.
Shortsword: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 for Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Sain stabs at the hobgoblin twice, his first one kills the enemy!
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Fist: 1d20 ⇒ 12
Scimitar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Meanwhile, the goblin kills another innocent bystander! He then sees that the situation has grown dire and tries to escape! Bonus Action to disengage, Move to run away!
At this point, I'm sure you can dispatch the last goblin so I'll call it here and move on.
As the last goblin falls, the surviving bar patrons organize a bucket brigade from a nearby well to quell the fire. A clearly wounded city watch patrol arrives as the bucket brigade douses the flames and get the blaze under control. They then try to quickly learn what's happening for anyone that will speak to them, mainly that anyone is the party.
After you give your account of the last encounter the patrol tells you that this isn't the only location in town that has been under attack. Before they can give any details, the shouts that you've thought you were hearing in the distance are now definately much closer.
As you head outside to investigate the shouting, you see a throng of townsfolk come running around the street corner to the north. They're fleeing a curious sight : a full-grown ogre pulling a wagon by a yoke around it waist. The ogre holds a cask in one hand and a massive club in the other. Riding atop the wagon are two hobgoblins with bows!
Fizzlebomb: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
Haldor: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (9) + 0 = 9
Paul: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Sain: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Varis: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Ogre: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Hobgoblins: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
1. Varis, Paul, Sain, Fizzlebomb, Fergus, Haldor
2. Ogre and Hobgoblins
PARTY UP! You should be on the new map now, let me know if it didn't swap over.
DM RyckyRych |
Bah, you posted with the wrong account, Sain! Argh!! I've deactivated that account from the thread, try to stay on Sain from now on.
Varis tosses a lawn dart! Sain embeds an arrow into the ogre's calf, angering him!
1. Varis, Paul, Sain, Fizzlebomb, Fergus, Haldor
2. Ogre and Hobgoblins
Those in Bold may act!
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus runs forward on the map and heaves a javelin at the ogre (assuming it's still alive, if not, at the nearest hobgoblin).
Javelin Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Cometh at me, Bro--err, Monstrosity!
DM RyckyRych |
Fergus wounds the creature with his javelin but it continues to lumber forward, showing no signs of slowing down! I'll try to use red dots on Roll20 when they are "bloodied", if I can remember. And no, he's not bloodied yet.
Paul, Fizz and Haldor!
Fizzlebomb |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Okay, Fizzlebomb attempts to fire a Firebolt at the cask on that the ogre is carrying on him.
FireBolt range 120ft
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
damage: 1d10 ⇒ 6
Haldor Dagsson |
sacred flame on the ogre.
Dex save 13+
damage: 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (5) + 0 = 5
Also, i am planning to use thunderwave next turn, so everybody friendly get 15 feet away from me.
DM RyckyRych |
Oh, I like this. How can I not reward that?
Fizzlebomb sends a magical mote of fire at the cask the ogre is carrying, striking it and causing its contents to explode! Burst 1 Fire! DC 13 Dex to save or take: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 4) = 11.
Ogre Dex vs cask: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
Meanwhile, Haldor tries to hit the ogre with a sacred flame! Ogre Dex, Take 2: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1.
The ogre is unable to avoid the majority of either blast! The hobgoblins' faces turn from looks of confidence to those of despair as the ball of fire appears in front of the wagon!
Paul, then the enemy!
Ogre (-30)
Paul "Lions Breath" Freeman |
I move forward behind fergus and haldor then use my action to don a sheild making my ac 18. then I scan the surroundings for water or other things to put out the fire.
Someone call the fire brigade!
DM RyckyRych |
Paul calls for aid! The battered city guard tries their best to usher citizens away from the fight and organize the start of a bucket brigade!
The hobgoblins quickly jump off of the wagon, leaving the ogre to direct it on his own accord. The goblinoids then fire arrows at the party!
Longbow vs. Fizz: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7 for Arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Longbow vs. Sain: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 for Arrow: 1d8 ⇒ 8
Both enemies seem more concerned for their own safety than injuring the party!
The ogre moves from out of the fire caused by the roofing tar cask blast but not before he burns some more! Fiery Tar: 1d6 ⇒ 5. He then turns his anger to the closest of his enemies, attacking Haldor as he moves by!
Greatclub vs. Haldor: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11 for Bludgeoning: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (6, 5) + 4 = 15
The ogre is unable to strike the war caster!
Party up!
Ogre -35*
Paul "Lions Breath" Freeman |
Me haldor and fergus will handle the orge the rest of you focus on the hobgoblins! Make sure to keep one alive for interrogation!
battle axe on the ogre: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Fergus McDammitson |
I swing my longsword at the ogre, bellowing, A pox upon thee, Fiend! Returnest to the dust from whence ye came!
Longsword attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
DM RyckyRych |
Paul screams out instructions as he misses the ogre!
Fergus has better luck with his longsword, striking the ogre in the chest!
Sain kills a hobgoblin outright with an expertly placed shot into its eye!
Varis, Haldor and Fizz may act!
Fizzlebomb |
Seeing the Hobgblin go down so quickly, Fizzlebomb throws another firebolt at the ogre.
FireBolt range 120ft
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
damage: 1d10 ⇒ 10
DM RyckyRych |
The ogre roars in displeasure and he takes further abuse by fire as the gnome magic user strikes again!
Varis and Haldor!
Ogre -55*
Haldor Dagsson |
Attack ogre with warhammer.
Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Since everybody's still near me, no thunderwave.
DM RyckyRych |
Haldor kills the ogre with his warhammer!
Varis, then the hobgoblin!
DM RyckyRych |
Varis throws another dart straight into the ground! Wow, maybe you should reconsider thrown weapons? Those last two efforts are not very monk-like.
The hobgoblin, seeing his cohort and his ogre have been quickly and efficiently dispatched, flees the scene!
End Combat! I'll hand-wave the pending cask explosions since you'd survive anyway.
A crowd gathers after the PCs defeat the ogre and more guards arrive a few minutes later. They immediately ask you to help with defending the bridge. But by the time you reach the bridge, the attackers have already retreated. The residents of Brindol spend the rest of the night putting out the fires that the goblins set, tending to the wounded, and keeping
a nervous watch from the ramparts.
The next morning, the full extent of the hobgoblins attack is known, including news that captives have been taken and treasures stolen from the Hall of Great Valor. Word has spread quickly of your heroism and you are soon approached by one Councilmember Troyas. He is a somber man, who speaks carefully and methodically to you as he questions you about the previous night's events. When you finish with your account he makes eye contact with each of you in turn. “I am considering something, and I wished to speak to you about it in person... and in private.”
The Councilmember already knows about your prowess in battle but before he offers you any monetary rewards for your services in rescuing the kidnapped citizens and (less importantly) the stolen treasures he wants to ascertain your motivations. While its fairly obvious to you that he is not expecting absolute trust, its also clear that he doesn’t want his faith to be misplaced either.
Skill Challenge! You can now try to convince Troyas that you are worthy of the job. I'd like each of you to make a skill check in order to achieve this. You need to obtain six successful checks before failing three times. You may use the following skills in the first "round". Of course, what you say or do may give you a bonus (or penalty) to the DC needed for success.
The skills at your disposal at this time are :
Persuasion (DC 10): You attempt to convince Troyas that your goals and his match up nicely, or that you are the right person for what he has in mind.
Insight (DC 10): You empathize with Troyas and use that knowledge to encourage assistance.
Everyone make your case!
Fizzlebomb |
Using my ability to track down some of the lore of the area, Fizzlebmomb says,
"Esteemed Councilmember Troyas, I know that this area has been long plagued by the goblins of the area, allow my friends and myself help to rid you of this area and return Brindol to its peaceful origins once again."
Insight: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus attempts to explain to Troyas that we are the right people for the job, using Perception.
Councilmember Troyas, since the days of mine youth hath I served Torm, the god of law, duty, loyalty, righteousness, and protection.
Fergus raises his right hand upright, with his palm forward to the councilmember, in a display of Torm's sign.
Surely thou knowest of our upstanding reputation, and thou seest the results of our efforts. When danger approacheth, we didst not turn aside; we stood in the midst of the ogre fiend's path and forced that wretch to face us, rather than thy citizens. I pledge that I shall not rest until thy kidnapped citizens are returned safely to you, and that the ruffians who stole them art brought to justice. This, I pledge to you in the name of Torm.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20
DM RyckyRych |
I assume you meant Persuasion. In either case, that's two successes so far.
Troyas nods to both of you. Indeed, hobgoblins and such have plagued us before. A decade earlier, a group that was known as the Red Hand of Doom attacked our town. This group isn't the same but... I'm not sure.
You can now use History (DC 10) as an option for trying to convince the man to hire your services.
Fergus McDammitson |
D'oh. Yes, I meant Persuasion. Not sure how I misread that. I'd have been better off with Persuasion, which has a +5 bonus, instead of the +2 I get to Perception.
DM RyckyRych |
The Councilperson does not seem terribly impressed by Varis' knowledge of nature at first, however he considers the words further and seems to realize that the monk may know what he is talking about.
Three successes! Paul, Sain and Haldor may try their influence!
Haldor Dagsson |
"Sir, I have always fought evil, and I would feel like it is a good deed to assist you in purging this town."
Insight: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
DM RyckyRych |
Another success!
The Councilmember seems to be more impressed with the group.
DM RyckyRych |
The half-elf (yes, I just noticed that) looks to those who have been silent so far to state their case.
Sain and Paul!
DM RyckyRych |
The half-elf looks into the eyes of the ranger and seems to be able to detect the sincerity of his voice.
5-0! Somebody get Paul to speak up!
Paul "Lions Breath" Freeman |
I have lived in this town for i while now and the thing i know now most of all is goblins are bad.
persuasion: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
i wipe a single tear from my eye. Real bad
