DM RyckyRych |
Hopefully he'll do so later, moving up the stairs.
Carved into the last three steps of the staircase are the words “Von Adrez,” “Kauthin,” and “Crypt.” And once you climb high enough to see into the chamber at the top of the stairs, you see bas-relief images of humans laden with baskets, bags, and boxes—all depicted walking clockwise around the room. Before your light can shine further into the chamber however, four hobgoblin guards notice your approach and quickly move to engage you!

The yellow hobgoblin lets Varis strike him in the ear in hopes that the ringing noise created by the strike will be louder than the monk's crooning!
The hobgoblins then move to attack!

Fergus McDammitson |
I don't mean to question, DM, particularly since it involves my guy's health, but how did Fergus take only 12 points of damage? The blue hit me for 6 and 9, and the green for 9 and 9. Even if I subtracted 3 from each of those hits, due to my heavy armor master feat, I count 21 points of damage. But I confess I don't know what "Martial Advantage" is -- I had assumed that it was another damage additive. Sorry if I'm missing something.
Fergus McDammitson |
In other words, am I still standing or not? I do not have 21 hit points so taking all of that damage would bring me down and obviate any attack I might make.
If Fergus is still up, he flails wildly at the blue one.
Longsword attack vs. blue: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
And do I mean wildly. All of that damage he took has greatly affected his aim.
Haldor Dagsson |
I decided to heal Heal: 1d8 ⇒ 3
If I can attack, then
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17

DM RyckyRych |
Its because I was in a hurry and I can't read. This is why in a play-by-post PCs and DMs have to help each other out since we're not at a table. So you took what, 12 and 15 after your reduction? We'll ignore the last attack roll you made and you can roll a fresh death save.
That may change Haldor's action so I'll wait to see on that.
Fizz kills the hobgoblin with an array of magical missiles!
Fergus McDammitson |
Haldor should add his con mod to the hit dice roll, right?

Haldor decides to attack the hobgoblin but his attack is parried by the enemy just in the nick of time! Fergus manages to cling to life! 1 success, 0 failures
Varis!
DM RyckyRych |
Varis misses with both attacks as the hobgoblin proves to be more agile than expected! The enemy then strikes back!

Here you go friend. Healing word on... Fergus!
Healing: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Fergus McDammitson |
Seeing how much damage I did, I would love to ret-con that attack to the uninjured green guy. But I did say to the "most damaged" hobgoblin that I can reach, so I'm guessing that's the red one?
Also, Fergus stands up.
DM RyckyRych |
Haldor heals Fergus, enabling the paladin to bravely stand and smite down the red hobgoblin! Varis manages to strike his opponent with his fist!
THe hobgoblin look furious as they see another one of their number fall! They attack the party again, however their efforts go for naught!

Green -4
Red -3
Fergus McDammitson |
Sorry, DM, I'm a little confused. Please forgive my impertinence, but:
Did I take out the red guy? The previous tally showed yellow -4, red -3, and green uninjured. If I took out the red guy in one swing, and Varis struck yellow for 4 more, then--not taking into account Fizzlebomb's latest attack--would the tally be:
Yellow -8
Green uninjured
Red dead
And then, assuming Fizz hit the green guy, it would be:
Yellow -8
Green -6
Did I get that right? My attack sort of depends on knowing who's up and with how many hit points.
Fergus McDammitson |
Assuming my suggested tally is correct, and that Red is dead while Green is down 6: Fergus slides past the now-dead Red hobgoblin to the side of Green, to keep Green from moving around Fergus to flank Yellow for their combat bonus.
Fergus then swings his longsword at Green.
Longsword attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Crit Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Fall, foul stinky thing!
If my assumption from above was incorrect: Fergus still slides in between Red and Green but his attack is directed at whichever of the two beasties is more injured.
DM RyckyRych |
Green should say Yellow now. You killed Green as he was the most-injured. Red is the one I'm assuming Fizz is attacking now. Not that it really matters now...
Fizz strikes one of the hobgoblins and brings it near death! Fergus decapitates the one near him! The last hobgoblin then dies of blood loss and from the overpowering abilities of the party!
Combat Over!
As usual, the hobgoblins carry nothing of any value. You are again battered and bruised but all seems quiet at the moment.
You can heal up and do other things as you wish, I'll give a further update in the evening.
Fergus McDammitson |
Using 2 hit dice.

Fizzlebomb |
Whew, According to the good dwarf, we are almost there. He's words were, up the stairs,
then through a dusty room and left through a door. I don't know if that means we go straight ahead through the double doors in the west wall, of if we are at the take a left through the other double doors in the south wall.
Fizz would like to do a perception check to see if he can determine if it's the doors in the west or south wall we want.
perception: 1d20 ⇒ 11
DM RyckyRych |
Fizz suspects that the door to the south would be the correct door to choose as it is left from the stairway.
I'll give the boxed-text once more:
Carved into the last three steps of the staircase are the words “Von Adrez,” “Kauthin,” and “Crypt.” And once you climb high enough to see into the chamber at the top of the stairs, you see bas-relief images of humans laden with baskets, bags, and boxes—all depicted walking clockwise around the room.

Should we also walk clockwise amongst the room to show reverence to the departed, before we open the doors in the south wall?
Fizz is hoping to find some type of hidey-hole that might open bearing gifts for the reverent
arcana: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus wonders if there is some religious component to the clockwise walking.
Religion: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (16) - 1 = 15
DM RyckyRych |
You find nothing arcane or religious about anything in this chamber.
Nothing comes of any of the walking the gnome does (though he might become dizzy if he does it for too long or too fast).
Fergus McDammitson |
History: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (18) - 1 = 17
Agreed. Through the south doors!
That said, Fergus superstitiously traces a clockwise route on his way out of the room.
DM RyckyRych |
Fergus opens the doors and reveals a room with three sarcophagi. Each sarcophagus is set into the floor so that it protrudes only 6 inches or so above the floor. Your freed captives peer into the room and exclaim to you as they see shackled to the far wall is Jalissa, an acolyte of Ioun and one of the Brindol residents the you are trying to save.
My prayers have been answered! Please, free me from this horrible place!
Fizzlebomb |
Proceed cautiously my friends.
perception: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Nope, looks good to me
However, i'm still standing behind everyone else before entering.
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus looks in the room. Madam, art thou alone or guarded by fiends?
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
DM RyckyRych |
Oh! I'm quite alone in here except for these coffins here! Please, please release me! We must find the boy!
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus boldly strides into the room, approaches Jalissa, and assesses the situation.
Hold still, madam. I shall try to break thine shackles.
Strength: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
DM RyckyRych |
Thurann, of course! I know he is being held somewhere nearby, I heard him shouting only a little while ago. She goes on the explain thet they were held together in this room until yesterday, and Thurann proved adept at stealing extra food for himself and Jalissa.
Fergus struggles to break the chains but with a final heroic effort he manages to free the woman, who instantly falls into his arms. Oh, thank you! Thank heavens I'm safe now with you!
Now having three prisoners rescued you decide it would be too risky to continue further into the complex. You bring back these folks to safety and gain a well-deserved night of rest in town. Proceed to Level 3!
Fergus McDammitson |
Fergus would like to search the room.
Not sure if this is Investigation or Perception so I'll roll both. I'm assuming it's the former but I've never been real clear on the distinction between the two.
Investigation: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
