A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

Valeria:
You recall as much information as Ameiko does--Brinewall is a ruined castle far to the north of Sandpoint, surrounded by an abandoned town. Before whatever disaster struck the town and left it in its current state, it was once a prosperous community.
Ameiko gives the chest another once-over. A determined look appears in her eye. "Well, you know what? Keep it. I don't need any of it."

"This..." She holds the letter in her hand. "...this is all that I really want. An ancient family treasure, stuck under a castle that nobody's been to for decades, if not more? Come on--now I HAVE to see what Grandfather was so desperate to keep hidden!"

Valeria couldn't help but smile at Ameiko talking about the letter. "Wanting to get back out there, huh, Ameiko?" She asked. "Can't go out on your own, though; you're gonna need a team."

Ameiko nods. "Yes. You read my mind, Valeria." She beams at the tiefling.

"With that in mind... I want to invite you all to go with me." She looks the party over, the expression on her face at once hopeful and pleading. "Just imagine--a piece of history, and the treasures that lie with it, just sitting there waiting for someone to discover it. So..." Her face falls, and she looks very unsure of herself. "...um, do you guys want to go with me?"

Gryf sits at the bar taking long gulps of his beer. They all seem happy to run off again, after all that we went through.

Mulling over the idea while the others seem to wait for his answer all he has to give them is. "I'm not sure i'm truly cut out for all this.." He steps up from the bar moving towards the door. "The time spent with my brother has given me a realisation I belong back with my people, I was young and angry... I still am but I can't set off on something like that. I wish you all good luck on your travels, Friday i'm counting on you to look after them. I'll see you when you get back.." He then turns clearly upset, the pain of leaving such quickly bonded friends the choice was a hard one maybe one he'll always regret.

Sorry to say it but my time spent playing on the boards needs to cut down and that means i'm going to have to leave this game. It was a joy playing with you all and i wish you all the best of luck.

Sorry to see you go, it was fun playing with you and Marten too.

At Gryf's abrupt request and exit Friday can only raise his hand while his mouth gapes, trying and failing to find any right words to say as their companions leave.

A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

Ameiko watches Gryf & Marten depart, her sorrow evident on her face. "Well... see you guys around, then. I'd have loved to have you along."

She looks over at Valeria, Haru & Friday. "Well, this just got a bit more awkward... I was hoping to have more people in on this." She beckons the three of you to follow her downstairs. "Come on--let's get the lot of you something to eat, on me."

The Last Thing Goblins Never See | Jade Regent Portrait

Shalelu has a curious look on her face as the remaining group comes back downstairs. Surprisingly enough, two other familiar faces have recently arrived.

The ranger waves Sandru and Koya in and leads them to a free table before waving the remaining group over. "Is everything alright? Gryf & Marten walked out of here looking rather upset..."

"Well, such a shame we won't have them with us," Xel remarked, "their skills would have been invaluable. Guess we'll have to call the whole thing off-"
"Nooooo." Valeria droned to cut him off as they went back downstairs. "We can work with this; Sandpoint's always had a reputation for adventurers, bound to be one or two around here somewhere with the right skillset. One to run support and the other as a hitter."
"'Hitter'? I think you've been reading that series of crime novels too much lately."

Valeria rolled her eyes at the raven's comment. "Point is, they're not exactly rare skillsets. Hell; Haru and I probably have the support side covered between the two of us."

"I think I know of a few people who might fit the bill. Don't worry, Ameiko, we'll get you to Brinewall safely!"

The Town Grandmother

Koya listens attentively as the party converses about getting new helpers. "Hmm. It's a pity to see them go--Marten was quite a good conversationalist. Even if he DID constantly smell... odd."

She shrugs and leans forward again. "Now, what's this I hear about you all heading off to this Brinewall place?"

A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

"Ah--yes." Ameiko walks over to the bar and starts pouring a cup of coffee. "For those of you just joining us..." She looks around the Rusty Dragon's common room and gives those patrons watching them a quick glare. They promptly refocus on their own meals.

"...turns out my grandfather left a sacred family treasure deep in the castle of Brinewall." She finishes pouring the cup and walks over to hand it off to Valeria.

"And this letter--" She slips the yellowed letter out of her pocket. "--explained a lot. Apparently, my family made some powerful enemies who gave up the hunt for us a long time ago. I'm interested in going to Brinewall and seeing just what it was my grandfather was so desperate to keep safe that he sent his son, retainers, bodyguard and treasures as far away as he could."

Valeria's eyes lit up as she saw Ameiko pouring a cup of coffee. Lacking coffee for her own coffee pot, the tiefling had left it at home while they'd been in the swamp so had been caffeine-deprived for a few days more than she liked.

She managed to get a quick 'thank you' out before taking that first sip of the divine nectar.

"Gods I've been needing that," Valeria remarked, once again glad that Ameiko had gotten that Katapeshi blend. "It's a shame your grandfather didn't leave any extra details of just who was after him. Wouldn't surprise me if someone wanted to play the long game and had someone keep an eye on the place. Binding some sort of elemental there would help - they're eternal and, from what I've read, earth ones have limitless patience."

As the others talked Friday made a mental note to ask Ameiko about the specific blend she had given Valeria. Xel had told him she kept forgetting to buy some more.

"What all is known about Brinewall?" he finally asks. Though he wanted nothing more than to start sketching and painting the people around him he had found that most people found the act of stopping a conversation to start drawing them slightly rude.

DC 15 Knowledge (Geography):
Brinewall is a ghost town 500 miles to the north of Sandpoint--it's a sixteen-day journey by land. Normal trade routes no longer reach that far since the castle and town fell; the roads there have fallen into disuse from decades of abandonment.

DC 14 Knowledge (History):
Brinewall fell to an unknown scourge on the 1st of Sarenith, 4687... just a few days after the date mentioned on the letter.

"Place is a ghost town set up around a castle. About 500 miles north of here, give or take. Trip's a bit over a fortnight, I think, and all the trade routes leading there closed along with the town. Roads probably aren't in good shape either, I'll bet." Valeria said, recalling stuff she'd read in some book or other over the years.

"Some sort of scourge hit the place back in '87. No-one knows what it was but it took the town and castle. I think it was... sometime in early Sare- that's right; first of Sarenith." her brow furrowed for a moment as something clicked in her head. "Hang on; what was the date on that letter?"

A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

"It was the 29th of Desnus..." Ameiko starts before stopping. "...wow, they struck that quickly?"

Female Rakshasa-Spawn Tiefling Arcanist 6 | HP 17/26 | AC 14 T 13 FF 12 | Ft +3 Rf +5 Wi +5 | Init +6 | Perc +5 (+7 if Xel within arm's reach)

"Whatever Grandpa Kaijitsu was wanting to keep safe must be something pretty serious. And something tells me whoever wanted it wasn't after it just for the pricetag, not if they were that quick off the mark." A thought occurred to her mid sip of coffee.

"Just who was your grandfather back in Minkai, anyway?"

A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

Ameiko shakes her head. "I have no idea. Dad never spoke of him that much--I have a portrait of him at home, so I know what he looks like, but that's really all I know about him."

She shakes her head and points at Sandru. "Anyway, Sandru, I've got a favour to ask of you--how soon can you get your caravan together?"

The Charming Caravaneer

"Uh..." Sandru blinks in surprise, not expecting to be pointed out. "...well, I can get ready to go by tomorrow evening. Repairs on my caravan are mostly finished, and I need to get more supplies and such, but--"

A Beautiful Bardess Beyond Compare

"Fantastic." Ameiko claps her hands. "I want to go to Brinewall, and I need a caravan to get there. Would you let us use it to go there?"

"Ehh..." Sandru seems reluctant to go along with this, but nods anyway. "...sure, why not. There's a few good towns along the way, and it sounds interesting."

"I'd like to join you as well." Shalelu speaks up, leaning back in her chair. "I think this trip will do us both a world of good." She looks over at Haru and smiles. "Besides, this will give me a chance to see how much my student has improved."

"Mind if I tag along too?" Koya speaks up, toying with her kapenia. "Desna'd never forgive me if I let a chance to travel pass me by again."

"We can recruit likely fellows from around here too... Hmm, Shae, what do you think about that traveler you rescued from the goblins -- Greg or something -- I've seen him around town, and he owes you a favor."

Shalelu looks down at the table before nodding. "Indeed... Gergo should be around town somewhere. I imagine he'd be quite interested in tagging along."

The Town Grandmother

"And come to think of it, I think I know a lad who'd like to come along." Koya stands up from her table on tottering legs. "His name's Kavell--most folks 'round here think he's been blessed by Shelyn in his work. He's been a friend of Mother's for quite a long time--I'll see if I can't find him and if he'd like to come along."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Right--it's settled then." Ameiko claps her hands. "Shalelu, Koya, could you see if you can find them?"

"Not a problem." Shalelu nods and helps Koya to the door.

Gergo

What a busy few days it's been. First, there was the whole 'bounty on goblins' affair. It's a pity you didn't get your things together to participate in time--it would have been a good way to get yourself some needed money. And perhaps you'd see her again--perhaps you'd see the two of them again.

At least the White Deer's owner is a discreet sort, and the food here is quite delicious. You've been staying here for the past few days, lying low from Magnimar's authority. The other clientele here are mostly unremarkable sorts, save for the bronze-skinned, dark-haired fellow in the corner. Judging from his good looks, athletic build, armour and holy symbol of a bird with multicoloured tail feathers, you'd surmise that he's some holy man.

Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the White Deer's doors opening. In steps a familiar face--Shalelu, the elf ranger who saved your hide from goblin blades and arrows. Still clad in her leathers with her bow at her side, she looks around the common room before noticing you. At her side is an old woman dressed in traditional Varisian garb, with a dark purple kapenia about her shoulders. Yet another holy symbol is around her neck, this one of a butterfly. The old lady's attention is on the bronze-skinned man, while Shalelu approaches you.

"Somehow, I figured I'd find you here." Shalelu leans against the bar and smirks. "Settled in yet?"
---------------------
Kavell

The town is certainly busier than when you last left it. The latest gossip going around is that the goblin menace has been decisively dealt with. Thank Shelyn for that--it was tragic enough that Grammy Niska passed away without being able to say goodbye to you. Having goblins attack & hurt others would only make things worse.

The White Deer has been your home for the past day, and suffice to say it's still as hospitable and its food as filling as ever. The customers are more or less like you remember, too... well, except for the scarred, scruffy man hanging around the bar. Judging from the scars on his face and burly physique, he struck you as being a man of violence--perhaps he was a wandering sellsword or some such. Such people weren't an uncommon sight in Sandpoint--indeed, some of the heroes of Sandpoint were mercenaries--but usually their type hung around the Rusty Dragon.

Your thoughts are interrupted by the sound of the White Deer's doors opening. In steps a pair of familiar faces--Shalelu, the elf ranger who helps keep Sandpoint safe from outside threats, and Koya Mvashti, Grammy Niska's daughter. Still dressed in her usual colourful Varisian garb, and with her dark purple kapenia about her shoulders, she totters over to you while Shalelu strides over to the man at the bar.

"Kavell, you charming young lad. How've you been doing?"

A soft shrug and a small smile was the prelude to Gergo's reply "Still breathing" There was a mirthful ring to his voice, despite the very neutral choice of words. A mountain of empty plates lay about the table in front of the former merc. Bones with barely a scrap of meat, bowls of soup with only a few drops left to indicate that there something there to begin with, and several fruit seeds here and there. To the edge of the table were a pair of steel plated gauntlets with that would cover a grown man's forearm and fingers.

Gergo himself wore a scale mail shirt over his sleeveless brown tonic. The metallic shoulder protectors each baring of a different design and craftsmanship. His pantaloons were black, held up by a light brown belt. The boots he wore were steel tipped. The leather his footwear were made of was grey but quickly fading because of age and ill use.

The sound of flapping wings could be heard drawing closer as an equally grey bird descended from above and landed on the unruly man of blond Gergo called his hair. The parrot squawked twice before hopping to the man's right shoulder "Greedy, you can't just fly in without saying 'hello'. Now say 'hello' Greedy" Gergo mockingly scolded the grey winged creature.

"HELLO GREEDY" Ecoed the bird before giving out a softer call than before "BEAUTIFUL. PRETTY" More squawks followed.

Gergo gave the parrot a sidelong stare and then laughed heartily "I wonder where he learned that?" He asked in a false confused voice.

"But Greedy's flirts aside, I know why you're here...sheriff's finally going to do it eh? I didn't even know you had a guillotine in Sandpoint!" Gergo got up from his seat in an exaggerated manner, the chair toppled down in response to the sudden movement "I can't believe that you're here to help me with my escape, that's the second time you've saved my life...and I didn't even do anything for you yet!" He continued, the smile on his face growing with each word.

He smiled politely at the sight of the towns guardian ranger always appreciative of her wild beauty, but his smile grew much wider at the sight of the older varisian woman. Madam Koya had known him almost his whole life, in a way she was almost a second mother, well maybe an aunt. Everytime he came to Sandpoint on his travels he made sure to stop by.

Madam, He began with a beaming winning smile and almost formal bow. I was actually just getting ready to come visit, I guess the word got around that I was in town and working for one of the ... uh employee's at the kitten One of the girls there well, she heard of my skill in carvings and wanted a little bauble created.

He finished, laying enough coins on the bar to bar for the mornings repast with a few extra.

I didnt expect you to come find me though, I can promise you there was no...other transactions on my part at that establishment.

He added blushing slightly. The goddess only knew how he avoided that place for the most part, it was awkward to him their profession.

Shalelu arches an eyebrow at your parrot before turning back to you. "You might change your tune in a second, Gergo. Let's get right to the point--there's a caravan being put together in town, and I was wondering if you'd like to join. They'd certainly use a skilled sword arm like yours."

Koya gives you a pat on the head. "Oh, don't worry yourself about that, young man. The thought hadn't even crossed my mind."

"Anyway... speaking of visiting, I'm planning on going on a trip north with a caravan. Some dear friends of mine are going to some place called Brinewall, and I'd like to have you along for the ride."

Brinewall? thats far north of Riddleport

He began with a slight frown. He had been to Riddleport once, it was not a pleasent experiance. It was certainly no place for an older woman, but then again... they were not going directly to Riddleport... at least it didnt sound so.

I wouldnt consider myself any sort of friend if I said no, besides I've never been north of Riddleport so it sounds like a trip to make. When does the caravan leave?

He asked his friend with a smile. He didnt mention the promise he had made to granny Nishka to accompany her if she ever took a long trip...the way the old fortune teller had made it sound... it was almost premonition like. He had given his word, and he would stick by that word.

If its sooner than later, my things are upstairs, a quick trip to the general store and I will be ready whenever you are.

A smile spread across the face of the wild man. In silence he picked up one of the gauntlets slid it over his right hand, and picked up the other one with the recently armored hand as his naked left began working the straps of the gauntlet.

"I'll get my things" The words carried an unhidden sense of excitement. Gergo made for his room and disappeared behind the wooden door.

Minutes later...

Gergo stepped out of his room. A traveling pack was slung over his back and several edged and blunt weapons hung around his body and for the moment he stood still he looked like a tree made out of metal that sprouted weapon in place of fruit.

"Lets go!" He announced loudly to the chargin of several of the tavern goers "That's the second time you've done something nice to me Shalelu, and like I've said I haven't done anything for you yet!" Said the blond as he made his way to the ranger.

"Don't tell me! You've fallen from me the minute you saw me!! No, no this is too sudden...I have to consider my feelings" Gergo's tone of speech was drenched with both jest and merriment, which was further reinforced by the barely held back grin on his face...that soon turned into a full blown howl of laughter.

Gergo

Shalelu's smile fades and her expression turns businesslike. "Laugh it up while you can, Gergo--our caravan is going north, to a ghost town called Brinewall. The road there has fallen out of use, and I anticipate that we'll see our share of combat en route."

Once you've had a chance to gather your gear, she leads you out of the bar and off into Sandpoint's streets.

"Aye, that old Brinewall place is." Koya nods sagely. "I'm hopin' we don't actually have to visit Riddleport on the way--it's no place for an old lady like me."

"The caravan's probably going to leave by tomorrow. It'll take Sandru a while to gather the supplies for the trip, so don't worry so much--take your time."

A light sigh flew through Gergo's lips as he followed after the goblin hunter "Always with the doom and gloom" He shrugged his shoulders, causing Greedy to rise slightly but the bird made no sign of changing its spot and appeared pretty used to the movement "So we'll spill some blood along the way. Isn't that why I am coming along?" He asked as he trailed after Shalelu.

"Did you hire any other sellswords?" He asked, his rough voice surprisingly showing a bit of seriousness.

Well then I will be sure to be ready, where should I meet everyone ?

He asked barely glancing torwards the loud boisterous mercenary that appeared to be trying to flirt with Shalelu. He would have imagined she would have better taste then that, then again he didnt know her personally and she was a well known ranger who traveled the wilds. Perhaps she did like them rugged. He was already preparing a mental note of where he needed to go and what he needed to get. He would also have to stop by the Pixie's Kitten. Several of the other girls who worked there of course had made mentions of possible work for him to do, and if he was leaving town it wouldnt do for them to get their hopes up.

He had to go by the general store and pick up some extra rations just in case, maybe some extra soap and the like, a few other minor sundries. Hopefully he could directly with Mr. Vender and avoid Shayliss, she had gotten quite ... well direct the last time he had been in town and dealt with her, but her father did own the best shop.

By the time you finish gathering your gear, Koya has already departed from the White Deer. As planned, your first stop is at the general store... hopefully, Ven is in a good mood. Or at least has forgotten about last time by now.

The interior of the general store is cluttered and vacant, save for the large sunburned man behind the counter. His muscled frame is visible even through his dark green working clothes. "Ah--finally come back, eh?" Ven folds his arms and huffs. "What do you want this time?"

The last time he was here, the shopkeeper had assumed wrongfully of course that he was there to woo one of his daughters.

I am taking a trip up north with Madam Koya and a caravan, I am just here for some extra rations and other supplies, I wont be long and then I will be out of your hair.... How's business been?

He asked as he moved about selecting a few items for the trip.

No counter came from Gergo. Of course there was a chance that nothing could happen...and while its probability was similar to them finding an ancient vault filled with long lost unclaimed treasure, it was a chance nonetheless. The blond simply smiled and continued following after Shalelu.

"It's been well enough." Ven tersely replies as you pick out supplies for the trip.

Gergo

Shalelu opens the doors to the Rusty Dragon and steps inside...

The Rusty Dragon

As you're discussing how to divide the loot among yourselves, the proceedings are interrupted by the sound of the Rusty Dragon's doors opening. In steps Shalelu, and trailing behind her is a wild-looking man, clad in scale mail over a tunic and bearing the scars of combat on his face. His reddish-blonde hair falls to his shoulders, and a grey parrot is perched on his shoulder.

"I found him, Haru." Shalelu nods at the bardess.

As Shalelu returns with another in tow Friday casts a quickl glance between him and Haru but elects not to say anything for right now.

"Haru!" Exclaimed Gergo, his smile beaming at the Kitsune "She's been all business and no fun as usual" He pointed towards Shalelu. His tone of speech and expression exaggerated to the point where he could not be taken again. Moments later Gergo noticed the others "Your the spell slinger" His finger went in Valeria's direction, then shifted to Friday in an instant "Quiet spearman" An excited grin came over his countenance as he stood a little straighter and put his thumb to his chest.

"I'll be spilling blood and crushing skulls with you during this trip...Greedy here will just watch from the back and call the enemy names" He gave the head of the parrot a pat.

"IDIOTS, WIMPS...BLOOD, BLOOD, BLOOD" Greedy let out a squawk and spread his wings very briefly.
