Here

We

Go.

Even with the cobblestones of Argent Avenue and the
foliage of Aria Park still wet from the morning’s light rain,
dozens of Kintargans have gathered along the facade of the
opera house to protest the city’s new lord-mayor, Paracount
Barzillai Thrune. The city’s new leader was appointed by
Her Infernal Majestrix, Queen Abrogail II, in the wake of
the previous lord-mayor’s sudden flight from the city—
an event that still has local rumormongers whispering
furiously. In a scant seven days, Paracount Thrune has
instituted martial law, a curfew, and seven outlandish and
polarizing proclamations. These actions and more have
called many of Kintargo’s dissatisfied citizens here on
this overcast morn. There’s been no sign yet of Barzillai
Thrune himself, and the opera house’s doors remain tightly
closed—as they have since the man chose the landmark as
his new home—but judging by the growing sound of the
protesters, he surely can’t ignore the scene on the streets
below much longer.

Unbeknownst to them, four unlikely heroes woke for the last time as anything that could be described as Average...

Protest Reason:
Tagging along.

Mira had been trying to sleep before the protest's noises interrupted it. Well, it's more accurate to say that she'd planed to have her sleep interrupted by the protesters, why else would she have slept in a building near the park?. The Baroness, an acquaintance of hers, was planning to go for some reason or another (something about 'having a spine' and 'their deity being illegal'), so Mira decided to make a point of accidentally showing up to make sure she stayed out of trouble and everyone got to go home without a pickaxe in their skull. It's a real win-win situation.

This leads us to now, where the intrepid rogue is yawning and shaking off the sleep while looking around for her... 'friend' isn't a word Mira would use for it, but 'person she knows' fits just fine.

The ink pen scratches across the surface of the pages, making notes, observations, and general thoughts as they cross Alexis's mind.

Hmmmmm

Alexis's thoughts ran wild as she watched the crowd grow more irritable as time passed. She sat on the cobblestone road a bit away, watching as more and more people arrived, listening to the words of the mob with interest. Every complaint was a note, a reason, something to remember.

Alexis had every reason to join in. From the burning of her library to the cold and dismissive actions of the new officials when she tried to report it. Forced to spend the last of her coin on basic supplies and a few good night's in an Inn before being thrown to the streets, no one would blame her for rushing in with the crowd of angry people.

However she didnt. She knew just roaring with the crowd solved nothing. If she wanted results, a more passive approach was need. One that used her intellect more than her emotions. Thusly she writes, making a list of grievances and wrongdoings. Waiting to see what comes of this situation. After all, it would surely go down in history right? And history is one of the most powerful weapons the people have.

Today's date had been marked on Septima's calender for quite some time. She had made attempts before to voice her displeasures before, but this was the first time news of a demonstration had leaked early enough to reach her ears.

And she would be damned if she missed this one.

Of course, she had many reasons to do so. The general state of things were more than enough, the curfew was insulting to say the very least, but most of all... Her parents. The investigation of their deaths had gone nowhere since Thrune had appeared and no amount of climbing the ladder of diplomacy seemed to make any difference. She was growing at her wit's end.

And so, the shouting, the shared chanting among strangers, and so on.

As Amara entered the square, she was pleasantly surprised at the sheer number of protesters. It's always good to have the strength of numbers behind your convictions. She rested her hand on the haft of her pickaxe and scanned the crowd, looking for a good spot to hunker down for the protest.

She decided that the fountain was probably the best place to be and muscled her way through the crowd. Some of the jostled people turned to voice their displeasure, but thought better of it when they saw Amara's armor and pickaxe.

She sat on the edge of the fountain and pulled a small loaf of bread from her pack, silently munching on it as she watched the crowd.

Target spotted, pickaxe in hand and everything.

Since she's sitting at the fountain, and Mira didn't exactly tell Amara she'd be here... time to hide behind the fountain and just keep an eye on the situation covertly.

If she's not needed, it's better that nobody knows she's here. That's all. It's definitely not because she's worried about the possible ramifications if a hellknight singles her out.

Definitely:
Not really, she's 100% being a coward.

Gremlin stretched and yawned as the morning sun found his bit of shelter in the park.

hmmm. What a strange dream. Can't say I have other memories of those people. But the mischief! Oh the glorious chaos surrounding them! Maybe they'll be with the rest of the smellykin. Seems a good place to look.

The cat rose, yawning again. Any onlooker would simply think a cat was meandering about, but this one had an intelligent purpose. He found a perch near a statue and observed the growing crowd.

Alexis raises a curious eye at the women pushing her way through the crowd to the fountain. Not very subtle it would seem, and with a pickaxe? Why? Probably trouble. Alexis makes a note of the women, blind to the other sneaking around the Fountain.

She also notes the sight of the cat. Strange, most cats tend to stay away from noise, maybe it thinks it can score a free lunch from some of the crowd? Speaking of which, Alexis felt the pangs of hunger in her own stomach. She sighs and pulls a small sack of trail rations out. She has been practically living off the stuff and hates it at this point. She Munches on a small bit between scribbles, grimacing with each small bite.

The event begins to pick up steam as people continue pouring in. Several groups begin to gather: Some Teiflings shouting Red lives matter, a man wearing a long coat with conspicuously short arms holding a "Free the Halflings" sign, some people with their mouths symbolically gagged handing out tracts accusing House Thrune of Redacting important history (Literally any Chel with K. Local, History, OR Nobility knows this to be true), Total Anarchists shouting obscenities, and Chelish loyalists who seem to be protesting the protesters.

The protest takes place in one hour rounds. Do as you do. The book suggests that you use one of these actions more or less:
Listen for Rumors (Diplomacy or Perception)
Pilfer (Sleight of Hand)
Rabble Rouse (Diplomacy, perform, other)
Search for a Contact (Perception)
Silence undesirable elements (Bluff or Intimidate)
Watch the crowd. (Perception or Sense Motive)
Do not feel boxed in by these, though. Tell me what you wanna do. If you do one of these, though, go ahead and roll the check.

Gremlin is taking 20 on disguise to appear as a mundane cat. literally none of you can pass the check, so you won't notice much unusual yet unless you have a hardcore thing for cats.

Protest round 1, Go!

She should be looking for anyone who could be causing the Baroness grief, but the shiny purse of one of the counter-protesters catches her eye and there's naught for it but to relieve her itch by practicing her trade.

If they're going to come where they're not wanted, it's not Mira's fault if they go home penniless, right? Right!

Pilfering from the loyalists! Taking 10, so 10+11=21.

Ugh, Thrune loyalists. I guess I'm attempting to silence those idiots. Taking 10 on Intimidate gets me a 19. 10 + 7 + 2 = 19.

Amara, beginning to get irritated by the loyalists attempts to disrupt the protest, stands up on the edge of the fountain. She cups her hands around her mouth and shouts in the direction of the loyalists.

"Hey! Anybody here who has a problem with us protesting needs to f@*@ off or I'm personally gonna rip your tongues out!"

She stands a moment more, glaring at the group before returning to her seated position on the fountain.

The Baroness is anything but subtle. ^_^

Amara's shouting seems to shake up a few of the loyalists, but it does more to incite the crowd to back her up. Slowly the loyalists are silenced in the roiling mass of crowd members screaming profanities.

In the Chaos, Mira finds it easy to pick 2d6 ⇒ (6, 5) = 11 Gold worth of petty coins off of thrunies. She also found a note in one of the pouches.

A suspicious note:

This pouch contains the down payment as discussed. Shouldt you and your compatriots fulfill your end at the protest tomorrow, you shall be extended the honor of initiation to the Chelish Citizen's Group.

As you finish reading the note, you look back at the one you stole it from. You watch helplessly as he pulls a cheap dagger from his coat and tries to fend off the other people. One gets too close and gets stabbed, then the crowd goes absolutely ballistic and beats him to death.

Amara and Mira are close to one another, but Mira is still stealthed. Round 1 continues.

Alexis's eyes narrow at the violence that ensues however she probably cannot notice that anyone has been killed yet (im going off the logic that she doesn't have a high perception and there's a whole lot of people tightly packed in.

Instead her interest went to the people who are passing out the flyers.

She walks up to one of them smiling, accepting the flyer graciously and studying it for possible notes.

I'm gonna assume that if there is any roll for reading this it would be linguistics which, by taking 10, I would get 18.

Also, she's going to look around for anyone who seems to be taking charge of the crowd, aside the Baroness.

“Oi mate, you 'ear ol' Clenchjaw’s tavern's gone bad? Used to love drinkin there meself, always a nice place to relax. Since the Night of Ashes, though, the place is jam packed! All this talk about politics, and the brawls, mate! Nearly 'ad me 'ead knocked off last night. We got 'nough fightin' on the streets these days. Wha'ever’s causing these brawls at Clenchjaw’s 'as ruined one o' the last places we 'ave to escape the violence. Just a matter of time before the new government shuts the place down, I reckon."

What Alexis Notices:

The flyer has some outlandish accusations, and some not so far fetched. "Thrune is changing our nation's history"
"Thrune is making bargains with devils, demons, and the like."
"Redactors have implanted memories into your brains"
"A living book has killed people for Barzillai and made their memories into books"
Stuff like that.
Turning it over, you notice the paper has been reused. It's a flyer for Hocums Fantasmagorium. A cheap tourist attraction that shut down years ago.

Mira:
The Thrunies are in the middle of the crowd, and there is no clear structure or leadership as of yet.

Inner Monologue:
Okay, Mira. At least a few of these Thrunies are under someone's hire, and in it just to get into a cushy group. You don't want anyone to die, but the only person likely to get the people in order that you know of is the Baroness... And she'd kill people. Or, rather, she'd wind up causing more ruckus like the others did. There's also you, but you're really more the background type. Not to mention the question of where you got the paper from... There's only one person here who wouldn't ask...

Darn it.

She walks over to Baroness at last, scratching the back of her head.

"Hey, Baroness, found something you might find interesting." She offers the note to her.

"Let the people know, but try not to make it a bloody mess, alright? If you get 'em alive, we can ask who paid them off."

Crisis of character more or less pushed off onto someone else, it's time to get back to crowd-watching for more trouble.

Okay 16 not Awful, should get my point across well enough

Alexis clears her throat and shouts to the fountain and thus the crowd.

"Of course he paid protesters.....Have we forgotten the man we are dealing with?
This is Thrune after all. A man who sees all of us Hard working Kintarians as nothing more than dogs. He Thinks us so simple, that we wouldn't catch on to such a ploy. Of course, this IS part of his game. He has been attempting to take our intelligence since day one. Silencing the truth and rewriting it how he and his allies see fit, going so far as to let a historic Library burn to the ground without the common decency to send a water bucket."

Alexis chuckles sarcastically.

"Of course we aren't Dim, we aren't stupid. We know the truth, its why we are all here. This women speaks with her rage. Alexis indicates Amara. And if you feel that unnecessary then allow me to tell you in a more calm manner. This man would do anything to undermine us as a people, so as to make it easier to fit his boot on us.....As far as I can tell no one here wants that right? So shout, yell! Make him listen to the cries of the downtrodden and force him to answer for his sins!"

Probably not a great speech but its late and I wanted to get some action in orz, hope it didn't suck to bad.

Alexis hears a voice from behind her, "'That he will be compelled to fight and lose to a people fueled by burning convictions!' Grandmaster Woden, Oppression as a Force of Progress if I'm not mistaken. Eloquently quoted my dear." The voice came from a hulking man (about 6'6) with a long white beard resting on an unseasonably heavy cloak. His face was scarred, worn by both time and battle, but he had a kind look about him. "It would seem we have the makings of something strong here. I look forward to seeing whether you back your words up, as do they..." He indicated the crowd, where now the more intellectual groups were gathering in front of her and getting into the protest. When she looked back, the man had moved back into the throngs of people.

The protest has been going well, but it seems that the anarchists have been making the wrong kind of suggestions. Amara was always in favor of freedom, but too much freedom has too high a cost. Government has a habit of going too far, but the ungoverned have a habit of going even further.

She hefted her pickaxe and calmly walked over to the group that seemed to be in charge, silently laughing to herself at the mere concept of an anarchist leader. As she approached, she looked for the scariest member of the group.

Some of the more rotten produce makes it into the hands of the more rowdy protesters and they start pelting the windows of the Opera house.

where is the fountain in correlation to the main building people are protesting? And I mean Alexis doesn't know s+~~s going to blow so she would probably stay near the fountain but it doesn't hurt to ask lol. Also in note to the cat.

Alexis chuckles.

I must point out that the cabbage vendor has been a running gag in our campaigns for more than a decade. Kudos for that. ^_^

Amara hears the ruckus and looks over to see the cabbage vendor distraught.

Poor bastard...

She walks over to help him out, but stops short when she sees the produce begin to fly. She chuckles to herself, picks up one of the unsalvageable cabbages, and hurls it at the opera house.

Sensing that things are coming to a head, she looks around for Mira. Gotta protect her friends.

It is literally impossible for Amara to roll high enough on Perception to see Mira. T_T

Also, I've just noticed my tendency to oscillate between past and present tense. This irritates me. Harass me if you see me posting in past tense.

Here's an image of the place you're at. ignore the text it's a stock image, the area is entirely difficult terrain because of crowds, and the cart I imagine is left of center in the street. I'll try to get the map up when I get home.

The crowd quickly runs out of produce, but that's not why they freeze. The door on the balcony overlooking the park just swung open...

The bells of the temple of Asmodeus abruptly start tolling at three minutes past the third hour of the protest. It isn't abnormal for them to do so these days. After the third toll, Barzillai Thrune himself exits the door and stands upon the balcony. Thrune is
an imposing man dressed in red, orange, and black clothing and an ornate breastplate, all emblazoned with the pentagram of Asmodeus and the cross of Cheliax. Middle-aged, with short, dark hair and a diabolical mace cradled in his hands, the lord-mayor of Kintargo addresses the crowd with a condescending sneer. The gathering swiftly grows quiet as he clears his throat and gives the following short speech. “Ah, my adoring little chickadees. I am sorry to say I have not yet adapted to your quaint, country ways, being accustomed as I am to the sophistication and learning of Egorian. Nonetheless, know I have heard your concerns, and that I appreciate your valued feedback, and I know we shall eventually find a mutual understanding in the fullness of time. I take pride in updating Kintargo’s quaint, outdated laws to the modern standards the city deserves, and strengthening its ties with the empire in these cruel times, but obviously I have approached my duties too aggressively.
“You say you chafe at the presence of nonnatives in positions of power? That authorities not of this city have no place as its leaders? That you will not be yoked by intruders? Your lord-mayor hears you. And so it is with a heavy heart that I issue this proclamation, in response to your demands: all ships’ captains are hereafter barred from leaving their vessels and setting foot on Kintargo docks or streets, under pain of... let’s say... squassation!”

K. Local DC15:
Please only read these if you passed the check
squassation is a form of torture in which the victim’s
hands are tied together and raised above the head;
the victim is then hung from the hands while a weight
is suspended from the feet, causing intense pain to the
arms and legs.

At that moment the crowd realizes that this is the only proclamation that bears torture as a punishment. Many cries go up, outraged that Barzillai now thinks he can torture people (as if he wasn't already). The crowd goes ballistic while Thrune laughs quietly from above. A handful of cow s#$! goes flying through the air and Turd grenade ranged touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14 tags Barzillai right in his shoulder plate. With his wardrobe and dignity endangered, the lord-mayor’s demeanor shifts from amused to bellicose. He shrieks, “Enough of this! Nox, run them off, arrest them, or kill them. I don’t care which!” before retreating into the opera house and slamming the windows. Down below, Nox immediately mobilizes the dottari, who draw their weapons. At the same time, men and women throughout the crowd pull back their cloaks, revealing matching armbands, truncheons, and the sadistic grins of Chelish Citizens’ Group members eager to mete out some “justice.”

I forgot that Nox was actually standing by the door. I'll have pics of her and Barzillai in roll20 soon.
Time to roll initiative!

Aww, hellfire. Mira was sure things were going to go bad when Thrune showed up in the first place. And now this? Seems obvious what the payoff was for now...

Bad. Times. Her grip tightens on her sap as her entire body tenses, ready to spring into action.
