Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Merelda, fighting the strange strength draining will make a rude gesture.
"Come get some WITCH!"
Kirzon |
Artsiv the eagle swipes at the hound with a claw as it passes by.
Claw: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13; Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3.
However, it's main focus is still the undead creature before it. Shifting into an advantageous position, it continues its assault. 5-foot step to N3 to set up flank, then full attack.
Claw: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 + 2 = 16; Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Claw: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 2 = 8; Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Bite: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 2 = 25; Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Crit?: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10; Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Kirzon charges into the room to help Boros out. Double move into flanking position. No AOO because the hound is grappled. I've always thought that flanking helps with combat maneuvers, but I'm not 100% sure. I do make that assumption below.
Boros continues to squeeze the life out of the hound.
Maintain Grapple, Flank: 1d20 + 4 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 5 + 2 = 20; Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4.
GM Aumakua |
My own ruling would say flanking does not affect grappling. Flanking applies to melee attacks and in terms of Combat Maneuvers the following replace melee attacks (Bull Rush, Disarm, Trip, Sunder). Grapple does not state it replaces melee attacks so I would rule against a flanking bonus. Regardless Boros hits.
Boros continues to squeeze the creature and bites down again on the hound. Still the hound continues to fight on.
Artsiv attacks the skeleton raking and pecking at it.
Nicias |
sorry guys, didn't realise we were on round 2. Thankfully, despite my complaint they seem to have bunched up a bit.
Seeing the target's disappear, Nicias runs through the doorway to get a better shot. moving to k2 seeing the hound close to the mage, he lobs one of his specials at the enemy targeting the undead mage.
ranged touch attack (bomb): 1d20 + 1 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 1 + 4 - 2 = 17+1 from point blank shot, -2 range
damage if hits: 1d6 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 1 = 10 +1 from point blank shot
6hp splash damage to all enemies within 5', allies exempt due to precise bombs
GM Aumakua |
The bomb explodes showering the undead creature in flames staggering it and the undead hound beside it.
Him, Innis and Lililinda. Your turn
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
Him attempts to leap backwards onto the stairs, but instead catches his heel on the step and leaves an opening for his foes to strike. Hissing he aims a slash at the hound, his blade cutting through the rotten flesh.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
Scimitar: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
GM Aumakua |
Him were you attempting to use your acrobatics to move 10 ft backwards through the hound's area of threat or were you trying to simulate a jump that now leaves you prone?
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
Acrobatics so I should have provoked 2 aoos, sorry that was not clear. I was going for the higher ground bonus which has bitten me in the bum - perhaps literally :)
GM Aumakua |
No worries I thought that was what you meant but just wanted to clarify before I made rolls. You can still move to whatever you wish provided you don't tripped by the hound since you are moving through an area of threat not through their one of their squares. So if you need me to move you tell me what square you'd like to move to.
The undead hound rushes Him as he stumbles on the stairs. Him strikes back at the hound leaving a deadly gash along its chest.
Undead hound: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Trip: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
The skeleton also lashes out at Him seizing the opening but it also misses.
Robed skeleton: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Innis |
Innis & Him: Mage armor; ~1hr

Innis moves cautiously into the room maintaining her focus on Him'Wazir's Defense
GM Aumakua |
Was waiting on Lililinda but let's press on..
The hound makes one last attempt at biting Boros and finally rips into the body of the snake, severely injuring it. Boros takes 11 hp

Party's turn
Kirzon |
I'm pretty sure Boros was at full health prior to this battle after Kirzon fed him a goodberry, so he's still at 1 HP
Artsiv's time in this plane comes to a quick conclusion as it disappears.
Kirzon waits momentarily to see if Boros can finish the hound, while Boros refuses to back down despite the hound's ferocious attack. Maintain Grapple: 1d20 + 4 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 5 = 12; Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
If Boros fails to finish the hound, Kirzon tries to give the hound the axe. If Boros succeeds, Kirzon instead charges the other hound that is harassing Him. Attack, Flanking or Charge: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 1 + 2 = 16; Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
His blade weaving defensively Him pushes himself back up onto his feet.
Total defence for +4 AC for a total of 25, obviously -4 for prone as he rises.
GM Aumakua |
The hound attacks Him as he tries to get up but the hound's teeth snap down only on air.
Hound#2 bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Over by the other hound you finally hear ribs pop as Boros puts an end to the undead creature.
This is followed up with a rumbling sound by the old dwarven warrior as he charges across the room knocking into the undead hound's hindquarters.
Lililinda |
Sorry, I moved, forgot to post
Lililinda slips into the room, hoping to provide more light without drawing too much attention.
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Pushing herself away from the comforting wall for a few steps to get a clear shot, Merelda casts her cantrip again with a rictus like grin on her face.
"Eat this you vile b%*#@!"
Disrupt Undead: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Despite her dramatic flair, Merelda misses horribly.
Nicias |
I should be somewhere near k2 - say l2, but I can't move myself via kindle. Could someone please move me?
Pulling out one of his special arrows, Nicias waits until the undead are bunched up.
using raining arrow, hold action until undead move to within 5' then loosing at the mage.
raining arrow if undead move: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (11) + 3 - 2 = 12
damage if hits: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (5, 2) + 5 = 12
6hp damage to all undead within 5'
GM Aumakua |
The undead hound attacks Him again keeping the warrior separated from the others. Somehow the hound finds a way past Him's defensive stance and rips into him again. Him take 8 points of damage
Hound #2 bite: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
confirm: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Skeleton touch attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Party's Turn.
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Merelda Stumble-Steps for a clearer shot:
How long does this strength loss last?
Disrupt Undead: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Merelda manages to clip the skeleton with the blast!
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
AC 21 or 23 if Innis is still boosting Fighting Defensively.
Gritting his teeth and hissing, as blood pours from his wounds Him'Wazir slashes his for across the back of its rotting neck, his blades weaving defensively.
Scimitar FD: 1d20 + 8 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 8 - 4 = 21 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Boros the Snake |
If the hound goes down at any point, just redirect these attacks to the undead.
Though severely wounded, Boros slithers by Kirzon's side to assault the remaining hound. Move and bite.
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18; Damage: 1d3 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Grab: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23

GM Aumakua |
Merelda you feel the rush as your strength returns back to you after both Him and you are able to injure the creature from opposite sides of the creature.
Boros clinging to the little life it has moves over to the last hound and bites it while coiling around the beast. Kirzon is unsuccessful as he tries to finish the undead hound.
Nicias, Innis and Lililinda. Your Turn
Innis |
Innis & Him: Mage armor; ~1hr
Innis: 1 Mirror Image;
can someone move me to k3 if they get the chance.
Innis & her mirage copycat step up beside Merelda. She unleashes white flames from her holy symbol which seek out her allies restoring their battered bodies. The heatless flame is gentle as a feather and sings of excitement; a wild dance that knows no end.
Channel: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Him'W: 12 => 18
Kir: 17 => 22
Lili: 10 => 12
Innis: 14 => 14

Nicias |
Cursing the lack of opportunities to catch their opponents with a nice burst of holy water, Nicias decides to move forward and let loose at the undead Mage move to l2 , please
Composite Longbow, raining arrow: 1d20 + 3 - 2 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 2 + 1 = 19 -2 raining arrow, +1 point blank shot
damage if hits: 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (2, 3) + 5 = 10
GM Aumakua |
Nicias' arrow flies true taking the robed skeleton right in middle of its back destroying the skeleton as the arrow's holy contents spray all over the creature.
Lililinda |
Lililinda suddenly realizes that she is still holding the wand the party found earlier. Magic Missile, low on charges. She takes aim at the last hound.
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
GM Aumakua |
With the wand in both hands Lililinda points the wand at the undead hound and whispers the command word. From the wand a magical dart strikes the hound and you watch as the creature keels over motionless on the staircase. hound destroyed
Him from where you are on the stairs you notice that on the landing against the wall are four backpacks. The stairs lead up to a closed door.
Kirzon |
"Nice shot, lass," says Kirzon to the gnomish fashion designer as the remaining hound goes down. "Looks like ye've got a knack fer fightin' when it counts." Kirzon gives her a pat on the back nods matter-of-factly, as if he was expecting her to have done this all along. He then joins Innis to search the bodies, seeing if they had any items that would offer clues or might be useful. He'll also take a look at the backpacks that Him points out. Loot the bodies and detect magic on any items and also those backpacks.
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Feeling more confident with her strength returned she moves to Lillinda.
"Thank you. Sometimes we are called upon to be more than what we want to be in life. We either step up and
accept the challenge or we fall to it. You have stepped up."
Merelda will then move to Him and cast a cure spell.
CLW: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
With Innis' channel from earlier that should put Him exactly at Max hp and me with one 1st level spell left.
GM Aumakua |
Gathering backpacks and the belongings of the skeletal mage Kirzon begins to concentrate searching for any magical items.
From his divination he finds the following items that radiate magic:
(on the creature)
a cloak
a wand
a ring
(in the packs)
a tome that is quickly recognized as a spellbook by Lililinda
a vial containing a dull purple liquid
a scroll
You also find between the creature and the packs the following:
a hand drawn map of the city bearing some interesting markings.
an ebony hairpin
a gold ring
50' rope x3
lantern x2
flasks of oil x8
flint and steel x4
rations x20
alchemist fire x2
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
With a weary sigh, Merelda will cast Detect Poison on the vial of dull purple liquid.
Then will settle down with Lililinda and Innis to try and figure out what the magic items are.
Spellcraft(Wand): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Spellcraft(Ring): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Spellcraft(Cloak): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
"Kirzon? Can you take a look at the new map and see how that factors into what we already know and have so far."
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
"My thanks again Lady Innis, I will own that I did not enjoy that," Him'Wazir says, rubbing at the now healed dog bites.
Taking up the map he passes it to Kirzon, "Can you make anything of these as our resident navigator Kirzon?"
GM Aumakua |
You are able to identify the following properties of each item:
Wand of alarm 26 charges. You will need knowledge, arcana dc30 or identify to figure out the activation word
Cloak of resistance +1
Potion of cure moderate wounds
Ring is bonded item so it has no significant appeal to you.
Make a knowledge, local DC15 to decipher map.
GM Aumakua |
Take 10 yields you a 16 so that is enough Kirzon
The map you clearly recognize as a map of Cassomir. On the map you notice X's beside The Notched Axe, The Golden Keg, Mother Tala’s Inn, and The Pike and Keg Inn.
On other thing of importance is there is a red circle surrounding another location. Beside that there is something scribbled in an unknown language.
GM Aumakua |
Sorry yes Kirzon
You watch as the words form in your mind, Innis. It reads Safe.
Kirzon the circled location looks like it is a business establishment that you have passed by a few times. It is located in the Abbey Green area and is called, The Green Mortuary Funeral Services.
GM Aumakua |
The spellbound contains the following spells:
2nd—scare, spectral hand; 1st—chill touch, decompose corpse, interrogation, and jump 0-bleed, disrupt undead, touch of fatigue
It is a scroll of surmount affliction (CL3 arcane)
Innis |
Innis will reveal her findings to the party and then say "Ah perhaps this will call an end to our accursed sewer trek, we've followed the end of our previous map correct?" the thought of fresh air emboldening her with enthusiasm.
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Smiling Merelda will agree with Innis.
"I've seen enough sewers to last me a lifetime. Just remember we accosted some local guards recently! We don't
want to get dragged away to the local jail for interrogation quite yet, so keep a low profile if we get to go outside.
Let's hope that whatever that 'safe' location is on the map, it holds the answers to our cure and our lives."
Anybody have Lingusitcs? I'm curious to know if we can simply identify the actual language type the strange word(s) were written in?
Lililinda |
Lililinda turns a bit pale at the reminder of what happened with the guards. "I suppose I could take the heat for that one."
I really ought to have linguistics, but I don't.
Merelda "The Widow" Widdomeria |
Merelda shakes her head at that statement and smiles impishly.
"No. Plenty of us were involved in that and deserve some of the credit as well. Besides its not often I get to use my whip
on five guys at once!"
Him'Wazir nar Maekra |
"Well said, I could never let a Lady take the heat, and doubtless I am the most identifiable given our interactions. Let us play it by ear, but hopefully such an unfortunate turn of events will not occur."
GM Aumakua |
After gathering and dividing your findings amongst the group you now stand at the bottom of the stairs. At the top of the stairs you see a closed door. The steps seem old and worn but do not seem unusual by any means.
