The Quest of Urg Hits-Burning-Stuff

Game Master ImpoliteCanadian

Urg Hits-Burning-Stuff embarks on his quest to... well he's not entirely sure what he's doing. Or what's going on. So, what happens when a Half-Orc (who knows how to play the bagpipes!) makes a deal with a supposed Tiefling? No, I don't know either.

And here begins the adventure....

You stand before the city of Haluccia, a grand city, surrounded entirely by large stone walls. People mill about, farmers and traders of all races. Young children laugh and play while their older siblings help sell their parents' goods. You can see people lining up by the gates to enter the city. Four tough looking guards stand outside, allowing people entry. From where you are, you can't see much past the large, sturdy gates into the city.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

The large half orc tromping down the streets would remind some of a disgruntled bull, roaring for destruction and anger. Some wise men, seeing past the brutish exterior, would say the monster was hiding an inner pain and suffering, and was doing his best to deal with it. For those rare people in the crowd who have had dealings with orcs, his body language was clear.

Urg is enjoying himself. He looks around, satisfied at what he sees. "Urg like place!" He bellows, the volume of his voice turning heads, "Big city!" He explains to anyone who will come within arm's reach. Which is to say, he didn't talk to anyone.

No-one ever find out Urg is the bad guy! He thinks deviously as he tromps towards the city's gate. He is unassuming. He turns around and yells out, "Urg is good guy! All good and happy thoughts! He love being good!" So devious.

Needless to say, Urg is not devious. He tromps toward the city gate, and stands in front of the guards, eyeing their armour with admiration.

The guards cast nervous glances at the Half-Orc. One of them takes a small step forward, addressing Urg.
"Welcome to the city of Haluccia. Anything I can help you with?"

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Very polite. Urg like them. Urg thinks. He takes a deep breath, and steps forwards, "URG WANT TO GO TO BIG CITY!" He bellows, "URG IS GOOD NICE ORC! NO DEAL WITH DEVIL OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT! LET URG IN PLEASE?!"

Deception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

The guards quickly agree that there's no point in keeping this wonderful Half-Orc outside the city walls, and the allow Urg to pass. Once through the gates, the city becomes even more magnificent. White stone and marble, cobbled streets and people of all sorts interacting happily. In the distance, surrounded by another large wall, there is a beautiful white castle. There are also many guards walking around. The city is quite large and it looks easy to get lost.

DM Rolls:
guard1: 1d20 ⇒ 5 guard2: 1d20 ⇒ 2 guard3: 1d20 ⇒ 9 guard4: 1d20 ⇒ 11

Perception Check Difficulty 12:
Amidst the crowds you see a young man standing in the shadows between two magnificent houses. He beckons at you to follow him.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

Urg wanders in without a care in the world, humming happily at this gorgeous place. He decides to take a wander, and immediately goes off the main street through an alley in an attempt to find a place people might live in.

The alley Urg takes is quiet compared to the hustle and bustle of the main streets. Clothes lines hang a few stories above between the white buildings. Water trickles down into a small drain. After many twists and turns Urg exits the alley into a small garden, hidden away from the rest of the city. In the centre of the garden there's a beautiful fountain with crystal clear water. Koi fish swim about, and a cat sits on the edge, watching the fish. A pedestal sits in front of the fountain, with an ancient book on it. The sounds of the city are lost here.

Perception Check Difficulty 15:
You can see the strange outline of a square on the ground in front of the pedestal.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

"Book!" Urg runs over in excitement and picks the book up, looking it over. He notices the small outline, and runs over. Secret? Pulses dully through the fog of his thoughts, and he pushes on the crack.

On closer inspection, the book appears to be written in another language. The first page has strange symbols on it, with common explanations beside it. This is all Urg can read.
The outline on the ground has a small symbol on it, one that seems to resemble something from the book. There also appears to be a small button.

I will send you the symbol that's on the ground over Facebook

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

"Button?" Urg says, with confusion laden on his face, pushing it as he stuffs the book into his backpack. Buttons do neat things sometimes. Or bad things.

A soft clicking sound can be heard, and for a moment nothing happens. Then, quite suddenly the ground drops out from under Urg. Sky becomes ground and the world tips upside down as Urg falls. A dull thud is heard and then... black.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

One thought goes through Urg's head as he falls. Crap. Bad button.

Soft muttering invades the blackness. Urg opens his eyes to a dark room filled with barrels and crates. A stale breeze whispers through the room. Urg can no longer see the hole from which he fell. Cackling breaks the quiet, as something moves behind the barrels.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg stands up, clutching his head. "Annyboddy there!?" He calls out hopefully between the barrels, carefully pulling out his greatsword. "Who you?"

More cackling can be heard.
"Who me, who you, who we? Check the walls, they show the key! A puzzle lost, the key is here! "
From behind the barrels a very old man appears, walking almost in a crouch. His skin is leathery with age, pale from being underground. Rags cover his body and many odd charms hang from him. He speaks in an old cracking voice, with a song song tune. He is very, quite clearly, absolutely insane. He throws his head back and laughs again.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

"Key? You want key?" Urg says. "On the walls?" Urg stares at the walls hard. "I no good at puzzles."

More cackling. And some coughing.
"The walls are the key!
He walks a slow circle around Urg, giggling to himself.
"I am lost, but you, you are also lost! Together we are.... still lost." The old man stops, looking puzzled. He scratches his head for a moment, then with surprising speed, runs out if the room, into a hallway hidden by crates.
The last thing you hear him say is an echoey call.
"The book is the key! The walls are only hints! Follow the walls!" His cackling echoes, and fades away.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg looks at the walls for a while. And some more time. And some more. He gets bored of looking at the walls, and begins pulling apart barrels and looking inside.

The walls are grey. The barrels are filled with sand. There appears to be nothing interesting inside.

Perception Check Difficulty 10:
After some time, Urg pulls apart a barrel and knocks it over. In the sand, Urg spots something shiny.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18

"Ooo! Shiney!" Urg says, reaching for whatever the thing is.

It appears to be a small, locked box. There's a key hole on the front. It looks fragile, like dropping it could break it open.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg puts it in his backpack, and goes on to inspect the walls.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
Investigation: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4

At first, there appears to be nothing of interest. The walls are just walls, and the crazy man was just crazy. Then, as Urg moves past crates and barrels, he knocks over a stack of crates leaning on a wall beside the hallway. Behind it, two small symbols are revealed.

I'll send you them via FB

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

In a flash of inspiration, Urg takes out the book and compares the symbols. "Mon-ster l-air. D-d-dang-er near-by. Danger?" He looks around in confusion. "Thanks walls!" He says cheerfully. He pulls out his sword, and casts a pair of spells on himself. A thin sheath of ice covers his body, making him resistant to damage. He then moves on, down the passage.

Mechanics:
Casting Mage Armour to boost AC up to 14, and casting Armour of Agathys as a 2nd level spell. Urg gains 10 temporary hit points, and any time he is damaged while he has those hit points, his attacker takes 10 damage.

The passage goes on for a while in the dark, before opening up into a large room. The room has high ceilings, like that of a palace. A broken chandelier rests in the middle of the room. Broken chairs and long tables fill the space. There a shiny valuables on the ground. The walls stretch to be 50ft wide and 100ft long. There's a large door on the other side of the room, and two smaller ones on each side wall, near the front and back of the room.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg crouches down, and collects all the valuables he can get. He also checks out the chandelier, marveling at it's craftsmanship. "Urg like big sparkly thing!" He mutters to himself.

As he approaches the chandelier, screeching breaks the silence and five goblins jump out at Urg from the chandelier. Three of the goblins are terribly uncoordinated and do next to nothing. The fourth hits Urg in the leg, while the fifth leaps from the chandelier, smashing Urg in the face with its morningstar.

DM Rolls:
GoblinsInitiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11 UrgInitiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7 Goblin1: 1d20 ⇒ 14 G2: 1d20 ⇒ 6 G3: 1d20 ⇒ 20 G4: 1d20 ⇒ 10 G5: 1d20 ⇒ 2 G1Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 G3Damage: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 4) + 2 = 7

Urg takes 11 damage, but regains 5 temporary hit points. He's at 23 HP, with five temporary hit points. Goblins 1 and 3 are dead. I had better have done all of that correctly....

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg bellows, and the ice reaches out, freezing up two of the goblins solid. "Stupid goblins! I hurt you!" He swings his sword, and it blazes with fire, cutting into one of the creatures still standing. If he connects, a blaze of fire reaches out and slams into another one.

Mechanics:
Gaining 5 temporary hit points from killing the goblins.

Casting the cantrip greenflame blade. Make an attack, and if the attack hits, a secondary target takes 2 damage.

Greatsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 2) + 4 = 7

On a hit, one of the other goblins also takes 2 damage.

One of the Goblins runs away at the sight of the Half-Orc fighting. The other two run in and attack Urg again. One misses, while the other slices at his leg.

DM Rolls:
G2: 1d20 ⇒ 3 G4: 1d20 ⇒ 14 G4Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Urg takes 8 damage. He loses his temporary hit points and is at 20HP.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg raors in frustration, and a sheath of ice covers him again. The wound on his leg closes up, leaving only a slight scratch where there was once a decent wound.

Mechanics:
Casting armour of Agathys again.

The goblins screech and run at Urg once more. They both miss.

DM Rolls:
G2: 1d20 ⇒ 5 G4: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Urg gains 10 temporary hit points, and he has 20HP. These goblins are terribly uncoordinated.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg slices at the goblin that ran off, killing it quickly and then makes another fiery attack on the two others, slicing into one and burning the other.

Mechanics:
Greenflame Blade.
Greatsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (6, 2) + 4 = 12

Secondary target takes 2 damage.

Opportunity attack against running goblin: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 5) + 4 = 11

The remaining goblin makes a very unmighty roar, and in a ball of burning goblin, attacks Urg. He runs past Urg and does nothing to him.

DM Rolls:
G4: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Goblin 2 and 5 are dead. Goblin 4 is at 5HP.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg walks up to the goblin, and tries to slice it to bits, growling as he misses by a hair.

Mechanics:
Greatsword: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 1) + 4 = 6

The goblin turns around and attacks Urg.

DM Rolls:
G4: 1d20 ⇒ 16 G4Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

Urg loses 5 temporary hit points. The goblin is dead.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg sniffs, smiles, and continues picking things off the ground.

Urg finds gems, gold pieces, and even a few pieces of the crystal chandelier that look like they might be worth something.

Add to loot: 2 azurite(10gp each), a cracked tiger eye(8gp), 2 jaspers(50gp each), 1 moonstone(50gp), 1 citrine(50gp), 1 slightly chipped onyx(35gp), 1 onyx(50gp), 1 bloodstone and 1 aquamarine(100gp). He also finds 19cp, 63sp and 37gp. He picks up 12 chandelier pieces, worth between 5gp-15gp depending on the quality.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg, satisfied, looks at the walls to see if they hold any clues.

The walls on either side of the room show no strange marks or symbols. Just grey stone. Then, beside the large door oppsosite where Urg entered, there's are two symbol that Urg realizes matches the "hidden cache" symbol and the "Go this way" symbol.

Perception Check Difficulty 14:
Urg also notices that there are dots in the middle of the symbols.

In the picture I sent you of the book, just substitute the word Harper for Hunter. I forgot to add that when I sent it to you!

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Urg pushes on the dots, hoping for secret buttons.

Nothing appears to happen when Urg pushes the small dots.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg shrugs and, holding his sword over his shoulder, pushes open the large door, continuing down it's passage.

Past the door, Urg enters a grand hallway. Old portraits hang on the walls, covered in dust. There are many doors, most of them locked. Near the end of the hallway, there's a spiralling staircase that goes up and down. There is also one unlocked door on the left side of the hallway.

Male Half-orc Warlock 3 spells 0/2 Armour class 14 Hit Dice 3d8 Hit points 20/24 Temp 5

Urg rips open the portraits, just in case there are any scary things behind them. Then, he opens the unlocked door.
