RECRUITMENT OPEN

After a multi-year hiatus, I am re-starting my campaign of The One Ring using the new Second Edition Rules and I am looking for 1-3 more players. Three players from the original game have returned and are working on updating their characters.

You are not required to be a Middle-Earth expert to play this game. You can easily play a Hobbit or Bree-lander that has never been outside their village before. The journey over the Edge of the Wild is a big part of Tolkien's writings, after all. However, if you are a lore-master who has has read every word of The Silmarillion and The History of Middle-Earth you will find many deep dives into the lore as we go along.

You can get a feel for the campaign so far by checking out the Gameplay from 2017-2018.

What To Do if You Are Interested
Don't give me a character. Please. Just indicate your interest, what you're hoping to play and what your experience with Middle-Earth (or The One Ring RPG) is.

Deadline
There is no hard-and-fast deadline. I'll close recruitment when I feel we're ready, which might be in a day, a week or a month. But the sooner the better.

I'm traveling tomorrow, so I won't be able to catch up on anything, and it may take me some time to learn the One Ring RPG, but I like learning new systems and:

I've read all of:
LotR
The Hobbit
Unfinished Tales
The Silmarillion
And the first 7 of the history of middle earth + Morgoth's Ring.

As I said, traveling tomorrow, so it might take me an extra day or two to learn the system, and get an idea up.

Similar to Kazmanaught, I've read the Hobbit, the three books of the LotR, and the Silmrilion. I've seen all 6 movies, (8 if you count the old animated ones). Huge Middle Earth fan.

That said, other than a bit of dabbling in a one shot Middle Earth game back in high school, I haven't played in that world or system. I'm not familiar with the 1st edition of The One Ring, let alone the 2nd. :)

Would really like a chance, though. I'd be open to playing pretty much any role you have need of, be it man, dwarf, hobbit or elf, with my lean being toward one of races you don't currently have in play, I think.

Found this in the Discussion thread. Other than the game edition change, does all of it still apply?

RULES AND CHARACTER CREATION
1. This game will use The One Ring RPG rules.

2. Experienced players may create their characters when ready. I will be happy to walk through the process with inexperienced players. It appears dense and confusing at first blush, but is really rather easy when you understand it. Compared to Pathfinder, this is very simple.

3. There will be no more than six player characters, chosen from among the following races:

* Dunlendings
* Dwarves of the Blue Mountains
* Silvan Elves of Lindon (adapting Wayward Elves of Mirkwood rules)
* Sindarin Elves of Lindon (adapting Elves of Mirkwood rules)
* Hobbits of the Shire
* Men of Bree
* Men of Minas Tirith
* Riders of Rohan
* Woodmen of the Emyn Vorn (adapting Woodmen of Wilderland rules)

and

* High Elves of Rivendell (no more than one)
* Rangers of the North (no more than one)

(Advanced Cultures (Rangers of the North and Elves of Rivendell) will use the same advancement chart as everyone else. They're not -that- much more powerful and if forced to use the charts designed for them, they will fall behind quickly.)

4. Each character will start the game with FOUR (4) previous experience points to help round out your past.

5. Each character should have a link to a picture of their character.

6. Each character should be formatted in a manner substantially similar to Galadhon here, including having your Endurance, Hope and Parry on the Class/Level line.

HOUSE RULES

A. Everyone should try to post at least once a day on weekdays. If you’re going to be away for a while, just let us know.

B. I reserve the right to change, do away with or screw up the rules in the service of story.

C. Fun > Story > Plot > Mechanics

D. I expect YOU (yes, you!) to move forward the story. Stagnation is everyone’s fault.

E. If you are not having fun, it is your job to tell the GM and give him a chance to improve.

F. If you know the rules better than the GM (pretty likely, actually), feel free to pitch in with a rule suggestion. The GM will make the final call, however.

A NOTE ON MIDDLE-EARTH LORE

One of the great attractions of the Middle-Earth setting is its dense history and lore. Tolkien scattered bits of story or names on maps like so much tantalizing birdseed thrown to the wind. One of my goals will be to bring in obscure bits of lore and visit interesting places only referred to tangentially in his many books. If you know nothing of Middle-Earth lore, that’s okay. You can learn some of it along with your character. If you are a Tolkien scholar who knows the lines of the kings by heart, well, hopefully I don’t screw anything up too badly.

However, be aware that I intend to break canon pretty regularly by adding to the lore in ways I hope are non inconsistent with what Professor Tolkien wrote.

None of the Character creation stuff from that post applies.

Hmmmm . . .. I was Adair.

I'm confused, looking back at when I left the game and how. I don't see any interaction where I said I was leaving, or apologized for leaving after the fact. The lack of such a post or PM is outside my normal behavior. I also don't see any "Hey, where did you go?" contact. Which suggests (especially combined with not having been contacted as you got ready to start back up) that you didn't really miss me. Not that the game lasted a great deal longer.

I'm always interested in a solid Tolkien set-up. Not sure you would be interested in having me join you.

I've read the 7 Middle-Earth books Tolkien published (3 or 4 volumes depending on whether you read American or European printings), many times. I've read the Silmarillion two or three times. I've seen the Rankin/Bass, Bakshi, and Jackson adaptations. I won't claim solid memories of the ones I watched as a child . . .. I have not read any of the additional material that's been written based on Tolkien's notes and extrapolation. The Silmarillion was hard enough, thank you. There are a great many people out there much more deeply steeped in Tolkien lore than I am.

I will await direction.

Duly noted. ;)

I think I'd like to play as either a Hobbit or an elf. For the latter, would you have a preference as to which type, as far as how it would play into your story?

I’m interested, Tolkien material has always been interesting to me.

My familiarity with it is low, I’ve seen most of the movies and enjoy them. Unfortunately I haven’t gotten a chance to read the books. And the system is new but I’m a quick learner and a enjoy learning systems.

So I don't have $25 spare RPG dollars to spend. Is there somewhere that I'm missing that the rules could be found? Otherwise, I think I'll have to bow out.

I'm afraid not. It's brand new and I know of nowhere they can be gotten for free.

Sadly, I find that I will have to bow out at this time as well. Good luck and have fun!

Unfortunately with it just after the holidays I can’t find the money to throw at this at the moment. I’ll have to bow out as well, hope it goes well for you!

Due to the kindness of an individual, who I thank immensely for their selflessness, I have now a PDF copy of the rules. I'm in the process of reading them now, but here's a few ideas I had.

My initial idea, before reading that we all were supposed to be from Eriador was to play a man from Rhun, and a distant relative of Khamul, perhaps a great to the umpteenth nephew. Certainly not all the men who lived in the East could possibly be evil, and under the thrall of the Dark Lord, especially not those who might have come into contact with the Blue Wizards. This man would have traveled West, to help fight against the shadow, to both redeem his family name in the face of his ancestor who fell under the sway of a great evil, and because he feels an obligation to the free peoples of Middle Earth to try and keep them free. Of course, there are lots of problems with Tolkien's depictions of Easterlings in his work, and if you'd prefer to just sort of hand wave it away, or don't feel comfortable with it, I totally get it. So here's a few more ideas I had.

Alternatively, I'd be interested in playing a dwarf. Perhaps one who had ambition to be either become the next King under the Mountain, or be granted a colony, but disgraced by a rival, and sent to travel the lands by his family until the time was right for him to return.

Anything else you need from me at this time, or thoughts anyone might have?

Someone offered to share with me as well. I’m more than willing to learn, and I’ll start looking over the PDF. Let me know if their is anything else needed or any more questions.

Good luck, Tarondor. I would join, but my plate is too full right now.

Kazmanaught, Mythicman19, please join us in the Discussion area. Everyone else, thank you for applying!

RECRUITMENT CLOSED

Hey, if you're still looking I'm a huge fan of Middle Earth! I'm definitely no expert on the lore or anything, but I enjoy the spirit of the world and would enjoy playing this game if you've still got room for one more!

Elliot. You're in. Move to the Discussion board, please!

Ouch, Tarondor! Please keep me in mind if you get an opening. I seem to have a bit of free time on my hands.
For a PF2e Middle-Earth saga? Yes, please!

The Hobbit was the reason I started gaming. My older cousin needed a player for his D&D game, so he told me to read The Hobbit and tell him who I wanted to play.
I choose Gandalf. My initial gaming character was modeled off of him: Loges the Grey....lol. I was 9.

Loges has besn resurrected in every gaming edition since (except PF2e).

Happy gaming all!

EDIT: I may have misunderstood. I was thinking PF2e.....

Hi. We're not open for recruitment at the moment. And no, it's not Pathfinder.

But I'll keep you in mind.

RECRUITMENT OPEN!

Hey, nerds!

We have a slot (or maybe two) open in our game of "The One Ring". If you're interested, now's the time!

I'm interested. I haven't played the One Ring, but have the PDF. I've read LotR several times as well as the Hobbit. I am thinking of a hobbit scholar.

I'm interested! Our usual GM in real life bought this second edition book and has tried to sell us on it several times. Though most players were not interested, I've always been willing to try.

What kind of characters do we have in the fellowship?

Okay, good point. We're using the newer Free League version of The One Ring not the older but similar Cubicle 7 version.

You can see the current character sheets at the top of the page, although Tilly is no longer a PC and will be leaving the story shortly.

I don't need character sheets from you (yet). All I want is an expression of interest. I'll leave the recruitment open for a few days.

Second edition, then. That's the one I read.

I see a Dunedain warden, a Man of Bree warden and a Dwarf Captain.

How would an Elf from Mirkwood fit here?

I don't have a problem with that. Just use the Elves of Lindon as a template.

Walker, your idea for a Hobbit Scholar would work well too.

Ah, so you're using only the core rulebook. Elves of Mirkwood come in a supplement. Alright, then. I'll have a read and see what ideas I can come with.

Maybe a small briefing of where the fellowship is right now?

Still trying to find a character that doesn't step too much in Abu other player's toes. There's a Scholar in project from what I read, I bet he's going to have a high Lore score?

I have that too (The Peoples of Wilderland). I backed the Kickstarter (or whatever it was). So sure, use an elf of Mirkwood if you have that book.

YOu can see everyone's character sheet at the top of each page, but I haven't heard back from Walker, so I don't know if he's in or not.

Jereru wrote:

The story began with a brutal bandit attack on the hobbits of the small village of Coombe. When the heroes investigated, they encountered the bandits and found they were in league with a terrible vampire. They learned that the bandits (and the vampire) were after a hobbit named Bungo who has since disappeared.

The search for Bungo took them to the dreadful ruins of Fornost, known as Deadman's Dike at the far northern end of the Greenway, where the trail ran cold. Before heading south, Gandalf the Grey advised the heroes to seek out a ranger known as Dead-Eye, but when they traveled to the Forsaken Inn, they found that Dead-Eye had been murdered.

The search for the murderer led them to a caravan wherein they found a woman who held a magic ring that commanded a terrible spirit of cold that nearly killed everyone. Having decided the woman deserved to live, the team took the ring, uncertain what to do with it until they met a band of elves heading west to the Grey Havens that told them how to find Rivendell and Master Elrond.

Traveling to Rivendell, they learned from Elrond that their ring was a lesser Ring of Power. They learned that all such rings were tainted by the touch of Sauron the Deceiver and that to destroy it and end the attacks of the Cold Shade, they had to unmake it at the Tham-i-Mirddain, the ringforges of Eregion.

On the way to Eregion, they learned that there is a strange ship on the Greyflood river with many soldiers and that it is seeking for something. At the same time, many goblins have come down out of the south to raid eastern Eriador. With the help of a ranger, the team has come to the ring-forges just ahead of an unknown body of people also headed that way. The team is right now trying to find their way in.

I have the filled character sheet. How should I submit it to you?

Meanwhile, I'll write some backing story.

I think folks just put them on Google Drive and sent me the link.

Jereru and WalkerOhmsford, when you're ready, post to the Discussion Tab.

Sorry I missed this :(

Indeed.

I'm just going to drop a tentative dot here, just incase you're ever looking for more wanderers.

Have a great game all.

Erryll and Louxman, pile on in here if you'd like. We're only five now and I'm GM enough to know we'll shed people as we go on. It's inevitable.

Erryll, that generator is for TOR 1st Edition. This is 2nd Edition.

Thanks GM, let me have a read through whats going on already and have a think

I know you don't want full characters at this stage. Do you want ideas here or in the discussion tab?

A bit about me. I'm a big Tolkien fan but never delved too deeply into the wider works. Love the Hobbit most for its childlike innocence. I know bits and pieces of the extended lore but from my own interest and research rather than reading extensively. I've been playing lord of the rings online for years, on and off. The lord of the rings films are as joy and remind me of my younger days, I don't like to talk about the latest Hobbit films... I bought the one ring books (the artwork is beautiful and very fitting) but never honestly thought I'd get a game. I need to reread the rules now to make sure I'm up to speed.

Louxman, Erryll, you're in. Go to the discussion tab and figure out what character you want to make. Let me know if you need assistance in either ideas or substance.

Would you happen to have a slot still? If not, would love to get on a waiting list. :)

I like what FWL did with 2.0 and love to see how it plays.

Laird_Thorne. Sure. Jump on in!
