Waylon nods, "We should be careful more rubble does not come down on us." With that he will try and start to carefully clear the way.

The team proceeds to shift rubble, a task only made possible by Báin's knowledge of mine-work. The labor is hard, particularly after their grueling battle.

But as the sun sets into a western sky troubled with rain clouds, they at last reveal a once-magnificent gate. Made of some metal as strong as steel and yet as light and delicate as lacework, the great door on the right depicts a might elven smith holding tongs in one hand and raising aloft a wondrous ring in the other. The left door depicts noble elves studying at the feet of an angelic being, larger than the elves, but with the light of the West in his face. This being is teaching the eagerly-learning elves some hidden knowledge.

Beyond the gate stands a cold and dusty hall, dimly seen through the bars. The gate itself bears a large and sturdy lock.

Their hard labor is rewarded by the magnificent sight of the gates - probably crafted by elves, the barding thinks as he gazes at the scenes depicted. His eyes fall upon the lock, and he smiles a bit. "Perhaps I can do something about this..." He ventures, drawing a set of lockpicks out of his pocket and going to work.

Stealth (Lockpicks): 1d12 + 2d6 ⇒ (12) + (5, 5) = 22 vs DC 15

Not sure how Jotun's Burglary feature comes into play here. Does it give him additional dice? With that '12' it might not be necessary, but just in case it does I wanted to mention it.

Waylon looks at the door and says, "It is late, and this has been a full day of labor. We may wish to rest beneath the stars and venture in tomorrow."

Jotun, that would have opened any ordinary lock, but not this one.

Báin, the metal is certainly similar to mithril, but it's doubtful that that much mithril exists in the world. Maybe its an alloy of some sort.

I suggest you go back and familiarize yourself with your encounter with Elrond.

"It is late and we have spent a great deal of time in combat and heavy labor. Are we sure we wish to go in now or wait for the light of day after we rest?" Waylon says again before Bain turns the key.

The ancient gate thrums with power as Báin approaches with the key. Parts of the fine scrollwork roll up while others slide smoothly aside in an astonishing display of ancient workmanship. In the end, the massive gate opens with a small click.

Beyond is vast chamber whose ancient darkness is banished in an instant as torches light up all around the room, revealing by their flickering light a scene not beheld by mortal eyes for an age of the world: The Tham-i-Mirddain, the Ring-Forges. It was here, deep in the Second Age that Celebrimbor, king of Eregion, grandson of Fëanor himself, forged the Great Rings with the aid of the maia Atanatar, who was soon revealed to be none other than Sauron, chief servant of the elves' ancient Enemy.

Large forges stand about the chamber, cold and covered with the dust of millennia. In the center of the room, carved in intricate runes to look like a natural pool beneath the spreading boughs of a stone oak tree, stands a great forge, much larger than the rest. About it stand tools, tables and jeweler's materials.

In the basin of the largest forge lies the crumpled remains of a golden chalice. Alone of all things here, it is not covered with dust.

Anyone can give me an Awareness check.

Báin's eyes go wide as the spectacular room is revealed. He quickly covers up his astonishment. "Meh. I mean, it's a nice forge room and all, for an elven one. If you want to see some forges, you should come to Erebor, where we have much mightier forges than these. But even ours are as nothing to the forges of Khazad-dûm! It's a little known fact that my grandsire's good friend and traveling companion, Balin, now rules there."

I think that Gandalf rune means auto success? I won't bother with a roll, as I can't hit the TN needed and a '12' has already been rolled.

Jotun grins at Bain. "One of these days my friend, we shall make that journey to Khazad-dum. I should like to meet this Balin." The barding takes a look around, though his gaze keeps coming back to the golden chalice. It looks quite valuable...

Bain notices footprints in the dust. Several footprints, in face. Somehow, someone has been here without opening the gate. Likely the someone who left that crumpled cup, for instance.

You can try to figure out what's happened here or you can try to relight the forges...somehow. Or you can do both. Whaddya do?

Jotun nods slowly as he realizes what he's seeing. "Thieves, maybe? Come in through another way and dropped that chalice? I wonder if they're still around... Can you tell anything more from the tracks, Bain? Are we dealing with Men, or something else entirely?" Unable to help himself, the barding moves to pick up the golden chalice, looking it over carefully.

Trying to determine it's value, but also, is it 'crumpled' as though something stepped on it? Or crushed it with brute strength?

The tracks certainly seem mannish. Too heavy for elves and too light for dwarves and too large for hobbits. Waylon cannot find where the tracks lead, but there are doors leading further into unseen chambers.

Jotun, that cup was smashed and recently. Likely by a heavy object like a mace or hammer.

Looking around the room, you see beautiful mosaics showing the smiths of Eregion at work. In one, you see an image of a noble elf pouring something...possibly water... into the forge from the very same golden cup that now lies ruined. In the next panels, the forge has been lit.

If nothing of use is found (either by himself or the others), Jotun will move to the doors exiting the chamber and crack them open, taking a peek through to see what lies beyond.

ELROND:
GM Tarondor wrote:

Many races of Men, it seems, regarded the Valar as gods. Clearly the Valar are the basis for subsequent religious myths. The elves and Dunedain understood them as powerful stewards of the one god, Eru. I think it's reasonable that a Barding might have a polytheistic religion loosely based on half-remembered tales out of the West. Bardings are what Faramir calls "Middle-Men", like the Rohirrim and most Gondorians. No longer high men of the west, but still noble and good, descendants of Men who never went into Beleriand and the wars of the First Age, but who had learning from the wild elves who likewise never saw the light of the Two Trees.

Elrond settles back and regards you.

"It was long ago when the elves fought alone against Sauron, while Númenor was yet strong. This was long before the Last Alliance of Men and Elves, and that was an age ago. When the armies of Mordor destroyed Eregion they sacked and burned all that realm, leaving nothing unwithered that had been fair and free. But for reasons of his own, the Dark Lord left the Tham-i-Mirddain unharmed. Before he died, Celebrimbor sent the one key to the forges to Rivendell for safe-keeping and I have it still. There is no door which cannot be opened with time and patience, but none will open that door swiftly without the key. I give it now into your keeping." He pulls from his cloak a small but ornate silver key and hands it to Báin.

"Eregion is long leagues from here and I have had no word from thence, but I fear you will encounter this cult again, there or upon the road thither. You must take care as you travel."

"As for the forges, I say again that it is not their great heat which will unmake this ring, but the power that is in them from the line of Fëanor. Celebrimbor was his grandson and in him the skill of his grandsire could be seen to live again. No smith am I and no word did the Gwaith-i-Mirddain leave of the secrets of their craft. If you are first to reach the forges, perhaps you will find something...

Jotun is taking a peek through the other door, if he can get it open somewhat quietly (see last post.)

Báin, your Craft means you have some knowledge in making things. Two bars means you're an expert in it!

Jotun:
You spy something odd. A dirty shovel and broken pick! They are not at all ancient!

Sargon:
The golden chalice seems to have been the key to relighting the Ring-Forge. Surely it would have been kept in a place of honor. Whatever caused it to be destroyed happened recently, not four or five millennia ago, of that you're certain. Someone has deliberately smashed the only known means of relighting the Tham-i-Mirddain.

But it might be possible to repair. Can it be that whomever destroyed the chalice didn't realize it could itself be repaired with careful work?

Also, how did they even get in here? Elrond had the only key and the gates were undamaged.

Anyway, with your help, Báin might be able to repair the cup and relight ancient Ring-Forges.
