Yea, it appeared right next to you.

Krezen is unable to harm the ghoul.

The first shadow flies past Gemheart before striking him again:
Gemheart gets an AoO if he has anything with which he can make an AoO and harm incorporeal creatures.
touch attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
But is somehow unable to hit.

The ghouls move forward and attack Jan and Krezen.
Ghoul 2 makes a five-foot step, but Ghoul one moves 10 feet normally, so you get an AoO against G1 if you have reach.

ghoul one at Jan: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
ghoul two at Krezen: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14
...with absolutely no effect.

The mage, meanwhile, steps back while calling out
"Lack imagination? I am afraid you leave me no choice!"

Another undead is conjured, this one a big tiger...or, at least the skeleton of a tiger! This one appears right behind the ghouls and begins emitting an eerie supernatural growl....

The second shadow leaves Hathnor's unconcious body and flies south, overhead of Jan, Krezen, and the conjured undead, stopping between Yessai and Sammar.

It made a double-move, so it won't attack this round. Jan and/or Krezen can both take an AoO against the shadow, provided they can hurt incorporeal creatures and haven't already used their AoOs this round on a ghoul.
As the shadow flies over them, the ghouls both snap their jaws at it:
ghoul 1 AoO vs Shadow 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 and shadows are immune to the other effects of a ghoul's bite.

ghoul 2 AoO vs Shadow 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14

Yessai also gets an attack of opportunity against the shadow:
Yessai's AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
though she is ineffective.

And now it is Jan's turn.

i've got nothing that hurts them that i can do on an AoO

I am not sure I understand DMB - what do you mean exactly by 'provided they can hurt incorporeal creatures'? You mean regarding the quality of our weapons, magical or not?

Aasimar Oracle 6/Rogue 6 | HP 36/40 | AC: 25 TAC: 18 FAC: 19 CMB: 22 AC: 23 TAC: 16 FAC: 14 CMB: 18 | F: +5, R: +10, W: +5 | Init: +6 | Perc: +8, S.M. +6 | Speed 30ft. |

Jan doesn't have any magic weapon right now unless you can do a swift action during an AoO, which I'm pretty sure you can't. Jan does not have reach either.

Also, don't forget Ghoul 1 is blind.

Jan watches the shadow drift overhead, and takes a swipe at it with his quarterstaff, but it passes through harmlessly.

"Damn! Have to do something about those things!"

Jan tumbles backwards and heads towards Gemheart. While doing so he drops his quarterstaff, and pulls another long piece of wood out of his satchel; this one is just as long but is crude and unworked.

There is a hum and the imporvised staff glows with a faint green light. He plunges the staff into the shadowy figure that is attacking Gemheart.

SO:
* Moving to V21 (just south of Sh1)
* Acrobatics to avoid AoO from the Ghoul, using magic boots:
acrobatics: 1d20 + 14 - 5 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 14 - 5 + 5 = 23
* Free Action to drop quarterstaff
* free action (part of move) to draw weapon (improvised quarterstaff)
* swift action to activate supernatural improvisation ability (from Rogue archetype - makes weapon a +1, can last up to 6 rounds)
* Attack Shadow from Flank

Quarterstaff +1 enhance -2 Power Attack -3 exhausted -2 shaken +2 flank: 1d20 + 12 + 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 12 + 1 - 2 - 3 - 2 + 2 = 23

If that's a hit it will be half damage, so 12.

Yea, I mean if you have a weapon that can hurt incorporeal creatures (magic or some other ability).

And thanks for reminding me that ghoul 1 is blinded, Jan. It shouldn't have gotten an AoO in that case.

Jan tumbles his way up to the shadow and smashes it.
Note that incorporeal creatures are immune to precision damage, so you wouldn't get extra sneak attack damage unless I've missed something (which is possible).

The shadow between Gemheart and Jan becomes translucent, as it is near the point of destruction. It is still (barely) animate, though.

Yessai, meanwhile, attacks the second shadow:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

1d6d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19
2d8 + 2 ⇒ (3, 2) + 2 = 7

Gemheart's turn.

Forgeborn map Armorist(Symbiotic Knight) / Incanter 6 || HP 53/60; g

ugh, forgot how to play my damn character. sorry guys. i should have done this the first round.

Gemheart flexes his fists and smashes them together, the crystalline structure of his armor rippling outward from the central gem set in his chest. When his fists collide, the flow of crystal flows outward from his hands into the shape of a wicked and serrated blade. It resonates with forceful energy before he swings it at the shadow.

Move action: summon equipment (+1 keen falchion). costs 1 SP, remains for 6 minutes.
Standard action: destructive blast (energy blade). magical bludgeoning damage added to the blade strike.

power attack: 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 12 - 2 + 2 = 19

I originally thought so, but before posting I read through the rules on incorporeal creatures in the Universal Monster Rules, in the Glossary, and in the rules for a rogue's Sneak Attack. I was unable to find anything that prohibits sneak attack being used against incorporeal creatures.

Edit: Dang! I found it under Incorporeal subtype. Might have done things differently... oh well. 8 points of damage there was sneak attack, divided by 2 is 4, so I only did 8 damage, not 12. Also I would not have had the +2 to hit for flanking.

Thanks for the clarification DMB - I am throwing the AoOs right now - I guess it makes sense in terms of the action flow. He has a magical weapon and Combat Reflexes.

AoO vs. Ghoul 1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

AoO vs. Shadow 2: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (15) + 10 = 25
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20

Krezen's attack of opportunity utterly annihilates the first ghoul and seriously wounds the shadow.

Subsequently, Gemheart smashes the other shadow so hard that it splatters into tiny shadows, which dissipate in the Pyramid's ambient lighting.

Ghoul 1 and Shadow 1 are both down.
Krezen's turn.

Krezen takes a step back and swings at the ghoul again - "Yessai, you need to get out of there!"

Moving to W:23, swinging at Gh2.

Bardiche +1: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (9) + 10 = 19
Damage if it hits: 1d10 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

The last ghoul crumbles into dust as Krezen strikes it.

Sammar retreats to the south before calling back to Krezen
"You have seen that which ought not be seen. Surrender your vision!"

Krezen make a DC 16 Fortitude save vs blindness.

Meanwhile, the undead tiger claws and bites at the sole living creature standing between the tiger and its creator: Yessai.

claw 1: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
1d8 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
claw 2: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
1d8 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
bite: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (12) + 10 = 22
2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 4) + 7 = 17

The shadow, surrounded by enemies, attempts to flee back north, leaving itself vulnerable in the process.
Yessai's AoO: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 5) + 2 = 14

Jan, Krezen, and Gemheart also get AoOs against the shadow if they have a way to harm incorporeal creatures during an AoO.

And finally it is Jan's turn.

Also, Yessai's hit-points are now 12/51.

Forgeborn map Armorist(Symbiotic Knight) / Incanter 6 || HP 53/60; g

I do, this time.

power attack: 1d20 + 12 - 2 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 12 - 2 + 2 = 24
magical slashing: 2d4 + 1 + 6 - 3 + 6 ⇒ (1, 4) + 1 + 6 - 3 + 6 = 15

i can't put the destructive blast on it as part of an AoO, so this is straight up +2 slashing weapon

Oooo... crit? No, they can't be critted.

14 damage, divided by 2 for incorporeal, so 7 total.

Jan twirls his quarterstaff, and it strikes the shadow right between the eyes, passing through its face.

"That's enough of you!" Jan shouts.

I'd try to acrobatics my way to the other side but with the distance that would be a -15 to my roll. Maybe next round.

Standard Action for Full Defense, and then move 20'. AC is now 27.

Gemheart and Jan both smash the shadow, but not enough to destroy it.

The tiger snaps its jaws as Jan approaches:
attack of opportunity: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (18) + 10 = 28

Krezen misses the shadow as it glides past, but hits the skeletal tiger head-on, smashing its bones and rendering it inert!

The tiger is destroyed--the space it previously occupied is now difficult terrain.

Meanwhile, the tiger's creator continues to retreat, fleeing west and out of sight. The injured shadow continues fleeing until it melds with the darkness in the north corridor.
Sammar has left through the hallway to the southwest. Shadow 2 has left through the north hallway. You can chase after one of them if you want. If not, this combat is over.

Yeah, we have to wait for them to wake up.

It takes close to an hour, but eventually your fallen allies awake. Hozela rises first, her reptilian eyes filled with crust from her slumber.
"I--how long has it been? "
The dragonborn stammers,
"When my clan first arrived in the Pyramid, we sent a few scouts to the third floor to see what was here, but they never came back. I presume they may have fallen victim to the same foul magic that took my consciousness, and met their end whilst down. "

A short while later, Sorjla wakes up.
"Did--did that really happen? Or hath I dreamt the whole ordeal? Didst thou see what spake the cause of our fall? I hath been told once, by my mistress, that the third floor is dominated by two powers: the shadow and the necromancer. I do not know which of them would have the power to knock out myself and others so quickly. "

Hathnor also awakens, but he is characteristically quiet.

"A great lethargy fell upon us when we reached this floor. Then we faced an attack by some sort of undead wizard and some shadows. They seemed to be enemies, and we were in the middle."

"I wonder if the bony golems we fought on the stairs are related to the undead faction here? Hmmm....."

Jan thinks for a moment.

"But back to our purpose, do any of you know which way we go from here to reach the trash queen?"

Now that the exhaustion is over, are we fatigued?

"I wouldn't be surprised if others had fallen to this necromancer and his entourage - he seemed resourceful enough" - Krezen nods as he hears the recount from the others - "He took a beating this time around though" - he chuckles.

We are in a hallway, right. Dies it run from one side to the other (one of them being the direction where the Necro ran to?)

When Jan refers to the bone golems Sorjla responds
"Mayhaps you are right, but to which faction could the gargoyles have belonged? They were neither undead nor shadow. Their fiendish forms would suggest they were innate to the Pyramid, as this prison was built by fiends. But then, perchance once faction or the other was able to construct such fiend-shaped golems to confuse their origins."

Hozela ignores the speculation about the gargoyles, and instead answers
"The medusa we found in the Trash Ruler's pit suggested that the Otyugh was in the "Shadow Hall." I do not know where that is. However seeing as there are only two directions visible on this floor, one seems more likely to lead to a location called the Shadow Hall."

You are in a hallway, roughly as shown on the map. The necromancer ran south/southwest, while the shadow fled north.

"I am"

"Lets go"

Let's get back on track...
To the north, the dark corridor widens somewhat. It also gets a bit brighter, but it is still difficult to see even for those accustomed to the dark.
This corridor has supernatural dim lighting: it is treated as dim-lighting as if you had normal human vision, even for those with low-light vision or darkvision.

There are occasionally visible flickers of movement among the shadows in this corridor, but nothing remains solidly visible for long, and nothing is jumping out to attack you.

To the north and east, there is an ivory door, with runes in an old dialect of Planescant carved into it. There is also another passageway leading south (see the map.)
More immediate, though, is a creature coming west from the eastern door. This creature looks like a bloated ovoid covered with a brick-like skin. A dark stalk about 4 feet long rises from the top of its body and holds its two eyes. The creature has three bulky spiked legs and two flailing tentacles. Its eyes are a deep, unnatural red and black swirl. This is an otyugh of unusually large size, but its quivering eyes suggest something else unusual about the creature.

Gemheart:
This is recognizably the Charnel Lord/Otyugh Empress, those the otyugh has grown in size considerably since your last encounter way back on page 8.

"You,"

A deep, scraggly voice echoes from the creature's mouth, which resembles a large hole with a circle of razor sharp teeth.
"I hath not the time deal with thee attacking me. I must be on the move."

Well, didn't you guys manage to make friends with the Arboreans? Might be an ice breaker? :D

Well...
Way back when Gemheart and the original PCs encountered the Charnel Lord/Otyugh Empress, it was noted that she may have absorbed some of the Pyramid's magic from eating too much, and might have been affected by it. You ended up running away because she was too strong to fight at that time (it was still 2014 in real life).

Much later, though still before Jan and Krezen joined the game, while Yessai and Mundarion were talking to Thoraska, Gemheart spoke to a fey living in Thoraska's territory. The eladrin claimed that her brother had been petrified, and wondered if Gemheart could help.

After Jan and Krezen arrived in the Pyramid, all three talked to Thoraska. The dragon said that she believed the Otyugh was being manipulated or influenced by Shavarla, the pit fiend who created the Pyramid. Thoraska conjectured that Shavarla may want to manipulate the factions to ensure Karavakos' prison remains intact (with everyone, including Karavakos, remaining inside the Pyramid). Thoraska wasn't sure though, and suggested you investigate. How much of what the dragon told you you want to believe is your call, since none of Gemheart, Jan, and Krezen have had much direct interaction with Thoraska.

When the current cast plus Yessai went back to the otyugh's pit, you instead encountered a medusa who claimed to be close to the Otyugh Empress (and who Yessai really seemed not to like). (Gemheart et. al. had encountered the same medusa on the second floor more than a year of real time earlier). The medusa was the one who told you where to find the otyugh. Gemheart also asked the medusa about reversing petrification, and the medusa said that while she couldn't do it, the Otyugh Empress has another follower who could.

I think that's everything....

"You know me to be one that gets right to the point. What disruptive actions have the arboreans taken? Also do you jave a follower who can reverse petrification?"

"The arboreans...they have been attempting to seed plants into the fabric of the Pyramid. It is a dangerous game they are playing, far more than they know."
"As to petrification, I do indeed know someone who can reverse such enchantments. He resides in the northeast of the first floor. Whether he'd want to help you is...well, it is not entirely likely. "
