- yep time to regroup with Gemheart and head out. As to where; there's no way you can dangle an Otyugh Empress in front of me and not get me totally interested. I vote Trash Ruler!!! If we can pick up the other two then all to the good, otherwise they might (with their naivete of the Pyramid) find something out about the arborlings we couldn't...Having said that, I see the utility of getting the party together immediately...

"Jan," the green-haired man says. "Call me Jan. You?"

"Name's Krezen" - the half-orc replies.

Jan Carpenter wrote:

Jan looks back down into the pit, and then around the room.

"Do you know where we are?"

He takes out his staff and taps one end on the floor. He looks the half-orc up and down. "You're not from Senara, are you? It's not a big town, and I'd recognize most of the people from there... that's where I was, before I was... well, here. Wherever this is."

"I do know it was magic that brought me here. What sort of magic, I cannot say. I remember... I remember a rather crafty tiefling reading from a scroll, and then I was here."

"Not from Senara no" - he shakes his head - "I'm from... Somewhere else" - and shrugs.

"I have no idea where the hell we are, but that tiefling you talk about I know - bastard lured me with an offer for a job, and turned pretty much the same number on me to get me here" - he shakes his head in disgust, maybe at having been tricked - "Now, why he would do that, is beyond me - did I hear something about us killing him..? Or 'them'..? How messed up is that?"

Jan Carpenter wrote:

Jan looks up at the ceiling... and around the room.

"Do you feel that? There is an energy here... I can't explain it."

"But we are on another plane of existence. I cannot say which one, but judging by the speech we heard on arrival, this may be what is known as a 'prison demiplane.' I don't think that's good."

Krezen: Jan is willing to explain what he knows, so assuming Krezen is willing to ask questions, go ahead and read the spoiler.

"Another plane of existence..?" - the half-orc ponders Jan's words for a few moments - "Perfect..." - he grumbles, but presses on with more questions.

Spoiler read. Thanks ;)

"Quite the hole we've been dragged into. I gotta say though, a place like this, in spite of all that" - he points at the pile of corpses - "Is pretty amazing"

However, another noise comes from the southern corridor. Slowly but surely, a large, shambling creature covered in dark moss traverses the floor towards you...

Jan watches the creature approach warily. He looks it over.

I'm guessing it's a plant creature, so...

Jan considers the creature's words.

"Newcomers? I suppose we are. You couldn't tell us where we have arrived, can you? And allegiance? Until now, my only allegiance has been to freedom... which is ironic, considering what this place seems to be."

Knowledge (Nature): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10<- If applicable... Even though with that roll... Maybe I can aid Jan...

The half orc's hand returns to the shaft of his weapon, ins spite of the fact that he had been warming up some to Jan's attitude. The arrival of the monstrous creature put him on alert again - "Entrapped I guess is the key word here" - he chuckles in spite of their situation - "And nope, no allegiances. Are there others here, alive ones I mean?" - he adds, motioning with his head at the pile of corpses again.

Yessai, Gemheart, De'arv'ki:
The most direct path to the Charnel Lord's chamber (involving only the areas you've explored already, at least) does involve passing through the entry chamber and the sahuagin's chamber. I'll assume you go that way, unless you post saying otherwise. Yessai and Gemheart can fill each other in on the details of what they heard along the way...

Getting back to the first floor is easy, and all is as it was when you were last here, up until you near the entry pit. From the hallway to the north of the entry pit, you can see three figures in the entry chamber that you haven't seen before: an aasimar, a half-orc, and an arborean. The aasimar and half-orc have their backs to you, facing south towards the arborean, who appears to have just come from arborean territory further south.
"That," Hathnor whispers as you approach, "is Zomnor, one of my tribe. I do not know who the other two are."

You can hear them speaking (outside of the spoiler boxes.)

Jan and Krezen:

Krezen knows nothing about the plant-like creature he sees, but Jan does know a little...

Jan:
This creature is called an arborean. Arboreans are a race of plant creatures in a variety of humanoid-like shapes, and some less humanoid in appearance. They are native to their own demiplane, called Arsalaunooza, but they are also found in the elemental planes of water and earth, and on some of the outer planes. Arboreans are carnivorous plants, and in their native environment often eat freshly killed bears.

"Thou hath arrived," the plant responds first to Jan, "in the Pyramid of Shadows, a prison built in the yestercenturies to bind a maddened mage, and now dominated by bickering factions and alliances. The bodies in that pit hath been yonder a long time, I know not how long for they predate mine arrival in the Pyramid. Whither hath thou arrived from? "

Also, some faint footsteps gradually become audible in the corridor to the north.

The idea was simply to act non-threatening and frontal, as well as having him answer my question, if possible. Will take a look at the rules.

"I just came from Sigil, you know? The big, round tire like thing?" - Krezen pipes in - "Was some places before that, but I don't think it matters much right now" - he turns around to the north, where the steps are coming from - "What matters is what is coming our way - any idea what that may be?"

Yessai, Gemheart, De'arv'ki:
If you wish to remain hidden from the new PCs and the arborean they are speaking to, please make a stealth check. Otherwise they will see you automatically. And then I will finally drop these spoilers.

"Nay," the arborean shakes its head at Jan's comment,
"Nothing in the Pyramid decomposes. Nor dost one age or grow hungry. Those in the pit died centuries ago, but their bodies are fresh. I knoweth naught of Senara, nor of Cheliax, though Sigil is a place I have heard of."

And...I should really wait for at least one of the three "old" PCs to respond before saying what Jan and Krezen see/hear coming. Sorry, this is the part of the pbp medium I dislike the most.

YGD:
Gemheart makes no attempt at stealth. Perhaps seeing him will distract them from looking for the others.

Yessai, Gemheart, De'arv'ki:
At Yessai's query, Hathnor whispers back
"Zomnor is to my knowledge neutral, though he may merely be hiding his true loyalties."

Everyone:

At Jan's questioning, the arborean answers
"I am bound to my tribe of arboreans. Though for how much longer I knoweth not. Indeed, the Pyramid of Shadows is heavily factionalized, and loyalties are a common inquiry."
When Jan and Krezen look up to the north, they see an array of figures: a catfolk, half-elf, a forgeborn, a dragonborn, a Githyanki, a tiny flying fey-creature, and another arborean like the one they were just speaking to.
The forgeborn seems perfectly content to be seen, while the Gith is apparently trying to stay hidden, but not well enough to escape Jan's sharp eyes.

Jan only:
You can also hear a brief whispered exchange between the githyanki and the arborean. The arborean to the north points to the arborean you were just speaking to, and whispers
"That is Zomnor, one of my tribe. I do not know who the other two are."

The githyanki responded by asking
"Hathnor - is Zomnor of your allegiance within the schism of the arboreans?"
And the arborean answered
"Zomnor is to my knowledge neutral, though he may merely be hiding his true loyalties."

When the big entourage becomes visible, the arborean to whom Jan and Krezen had been speaking remarks
"Oh...you. You're the recent arrivals who have been sowing chaos in the Pyramid as of late. Or so I hath been told. Would thou happen to recognize either of these two even newer arrivals? I...I should go."
He turns towards the western corridor and starts to leave in that direction, unless stopped, leaving you all together.

Krezen stands back as a veritable host of strangers heads their way - "That's a mixed bunch" - he chuckles as the others approach.

When the arborean inquires the others if they know them, he comments - "Doubtful. At least I do not know any of them" - he does nod a greeting toward the group, then turns back to the arborean again - "You are leaving?"

@DMB - what are your plans for Mundarion? I see by your description that he is still part of our party...

"Well met" - Krezen replies, opting to leave his weapon at his back also for the time being - "If you mean the bastard tiefling with the squealing voice, then that is a yes" - Krezen grumbles - "I am Krezen, and this is Jan"

Forgeborn map Armorist(Symbiotic Knight) / Incanter 6 || HP 53/60; g

"I am known as Gemheart" says the golem-looking man with metal skin and crystals jutting out. Adding to that is the fact that his entire heavy armor is made of crystals and four two-handed weapons affixed to his body, it's safe to assume this one is a warrior.

"Well met Gemheart. From what I hear you guys were also stranded here then?" - the half-orc nods, taking note of the warrior's unusual aspect and armor - "Been busy 'sowing chaos' in the Pyramid?" - Krezen chuckles.

As introductions fly, the dragonborn speaks up:
"I am known as Hozela, and hail from Sigil. I've been in this birdcage about a month longer than these her sods, and I've been following them around for awhile now. They are strong, and seem to be my best hope of getting out of here."

The newly-arrived arborean joins in a much quieter voice
"I, tŭ, follow this group, though fer different reasons. Meh name is Hathnor. I would not call what they have been dŭing "sowing chaos," though some people might want to call it that."

The fey creature that is flying next to Gemheart and De'arv'ki uses a higher pitched voice to introduce themself:
"I am known as Sorjla, vassal of the dragon gods, and handmaid of the dragon Thoraska Ulthmton. I hath been enclosed in the Pyramid for aught nine decades. I am a grig, in case thou couldn't tell. Mine arrival here seems to have been different from thine, for ith was before Karavakos learned to move the Pyramid and entrap others. As of late everyone who enters seems to be brought hither by the tiefling's doings."

"Yes, we are trapped until we kill the master of this demiplane. Sowing chaos, I think not. I think of it more as chipping away at a block of stone until the sculpture beneath emerges. Yet, we've a long way to go."

"The soul of Karavakos was split in four, of which one piece resides in the body of the true Karavakos."
Hozela the dragonborn continues Gemheart's explanation, speaking to the two newcomers.
"The other three power supernatural constructs, the Splinters of Karavakos, which embody aspects of the tiefling and inherit pieces of his personality. The Splinters are not under the control of the original; quite the opposite. The true Karavakos seeks the destruction of the Splinters, in order that he may regain the pieces of his essence. Karavakos believes that should he regain all the Splinters' power, his own power shall be sufficient to escape the Pyramid. That motive is why Karavakos hath recently brought many barmies into the Pyramid, for he wants us, and you, to destroy his Splinters."
She continues,
"On the other hand, if the true Karavakos were to die, the Pyramid may yet open its bars to allow us to leave, for its original and only purpose is as a prison for Karavakos.
How to put Karavakos in the dead book is something unknown to this group. Even reaching him is something no one has done since long before I've been in the Pyramid, or so I have heard.

When no one else is forthcoming, Sorjla responds to Krezen
"I can share with thee only that which I know,"
The grig is hesitant, but continues
"The Trash Ruler, also known as the Charnel Lord, the Carrion Chief and the Otyugh Empress, is an old being, who hath dwelt within the Pyramid for longer than I have, though how long exactly I do not know. The otyugh normally resides on the first floor, to the southwest of here, but they hath been purportedly sighted on the second and third floors. I have heard it said that all of the Carrion Chief's friends and allies live on the second and third floor. The Otyugh Empress ith rarely or never spotted in the territory of other factions, yet somehow passes between floors, either through passages unknown to me or magic, I knoweth not."
Breathing deeply, she continues
"My mistress believes that the Trash Ruler hath fallen under the influence of a hostile enchantment, possibly related to the magic which binds the Pyramid together. I do not know how my Mistress arrived at that conclusion. I myself have never even seen the Charnel Lord, nor any other otyugh."

Ack, I just noticed I made a typo earlier on this page: I had Sorjla say that she has been in the pyramid for nearly nine decades, but she should actually have said five decades. It almost certainly won't matter, as Sorjla's background isn't really important, but her being in the pyramid for 90 years would create a minor inconsistency in the timeline in my notes.

"Yep, we can get on our way" - Krezen nods at Jan, taking a second look at his wooden armor - "Nice trick"

Turning his attention to Sorjla and Gemheart again, he presses on - "Ok, so maybe the Trash Boss has fallen under some sort of enchantment, I got that" - the half-orc's pragmatic attitude making him ponder the issue further - "Even so - what do we want from it? Information about anything in particular? Or perhaps dig to try and find how it can help us get out of here? Releasing it from this enchantment?" - then he pauses momentarily - "In fact... Does it even 'speak'?

Yessai ruminates awhile.

"Essentially, Thoraska wanted information about the Trash Ruler. Perhaps she wishes to conquer its territory, or deems it a threat. Much of our headway has been gained from visitning various "petty rulers" and eking small favours or information about the whereabouts of this or that, or building our knowledge of Kravakoss."

Yessai indicates the arborean, Hathnor:

"For example: The ruler of the Arboreans I persuaded to give us the aid of Hathnor - partially by proving that if he didn't, he was thereby to be considered the least of our patrons, they who had gifted us Hozela the dragonborn and Sorjla the grig. Rulers must have ego it seems, and pride forms at least a part of that."

[Also, with this preying on pride/leader's vanity went a good Diplomacy roll and some prudent Aid Another's...]

Yessai sums up:

"So, we found out what "she" knows about the Pyramid, other factions and the Splinters of Kravakoss, and we find out about her for Thoraska."

"Ok" - Krezen nods - "So we don't want to go in guns blazing" - he considers - "Let's see, it seems otyughs like... Trash. Anything else anyone can think about that could be interesting to her? Jan?"

"Or maybe that is what we need to find out"

Jan and Krezen:
Otyugh's large abberations native to the Far Realm. They mainly live in toxic liquids, swamps, and trash pits, but they can be found almost anywhere on the Great Wheel, except for the Negative Energy Plane (where there is very little food for them). Their three legs are typically covered in dung, both their own and others'.

Jan only:
While otyughs can speak, most do so very rarely, since speech interfears with eating. Some otyughs are able to speak through tentacles whilst chewing or even sleeping.
If one attempts to travel to the Far Realm via magic, a living otyugh can act as a focus to a plane shift spell, and the otyugh is transported to the Far Realm as well. Some scholars believe that this occurs because otyughs are naturally good at finding interplanar portals, but there is some evidence against this possibility.

Some have reported seeing an otyugh with three tentacles that look like those of a beholder, rather than like the tentacles of other otyughs....

Getting back to the chamber where Yessai, Gemheart, and De'arv'ki last met the Charnel Lord is not hard: you all can head east, through the sahuagins' and harpies' chamber. They do not stop you, though they give a few odd looks to Krezen and Jan. South of the sahuagins' chamber is a staircase. At the bottom is one end of a hallway, 20 feet wide. A statue of a robed figure stares down the length of this wide hallway toward an exact duplicate on the other end.
On the other side of the hallway (not the other end, across the short direction), there is another door.
No one appears to be in this room, but you can hear a pair of footsteps coming from under the floor. They do not, however, sound like those of a three-legged Far Realm aberration.

Yessai, Gemheart, De'arv'ki:
While it is not attacking anyone, the signs are that the trap from before is still waiting to be sprung. Near the other end of the hallway, there are cracks in the floor forming a 20 foot square, as if that part of the floor is disconnected from the rest.

Yessai holds out a cautioning hand.

"A trap lies on the floor, [indicates an area of the floor by pointing her blade] and an otyugh waited within. Whether it waits still inside I do not know..."

"Thanks for that" - Krezen nods at Vassekh - "Guess I'm not paying attention - wouldn't have noticed it even if it up and bit me in... Whatever" - he chuckles.

"So you think she is below? Shall we announce ourselves? You think she will give in to flattery?" - he winks -"I don't know much about Otyughs, but I know they like to eat - maybe we can play that angle?"

Yessai looks at Krezen as the half-orc considers the information and responds.
"I do not think this one below is the Trash Queen. It seemed more like aome kind of waste disposal mechanism. [ here makes a sour face ] Where we are the waste. I think the Trash Ruler is elsewhere, and to my mind might also hold court much as the Arboreans and Thoraska does."

The githyanki pauses momentarily before adding:

"Of course, I may be entirely incorrect..."

Posting some gathered intel for the benefit of Jan and Krezen in the Discussion thread.

Where is Dee? Has Dee even interacted with the newcomers?

With a clicking sound, the loose floor piece falls away, and the northern wall shakes. Another 20 foot square of floor drops down from the wall to fill the hole, but on it is another person. While she has the body of a tall humanoid, her head is covered in snakes. Her face is veiled with a pitch black cloak, so you cannot see her eyes.
"Ssssssso,"
her voice is deep and full of vibrato, but sounds just as snake-like as the creature's hair,
"You have returned to thisssssssss floor. Are you planning to burn down the lair of the Trasssssssssh ruler, assssss well? You may be ssssssory to hear that her domain issssss fire proof. "
A pair of dim yellow eyes glow briefly through the veil before subsiding. The creature faces menacingly towards you...

Yessai, Gemheart, De'arv'ki:
The voice of this medusa matches that of the medusa you heard in the corridor back on page 45.
