Kristen Mensbane |
Kristen bows to the robed man. "We seek guidance about a man who recently has come to our organization for help. He calls himself a Prince, and speaks of a portal to another world. Do you have any insights about these things?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20
Gilfroy Fezziwig PFS |
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16
Normally an overly-verbal but charming gnome, Gilfroy is feeling quite off from the smells of the sewer. He smiles politely to the Almsman, but the others have already covered their purpose for being there.
Kristen Mensbane |
"We would be amenable to performing a task for you in exchange for some information, sir."
Maeron Calaerdaer |
Maeron arches an eyebrow.
"Who or what are these Steel Wyverns and why do they want money from you? I am not comfortable fighting someone without good cause."
Vrald Sehir |
"The Steel Wyverns" says Vrald "are a blight that it will be my pleasure to help remove."
He turns to Maeron. "The captain mentioned them to us, a local band of bandits."
GM Baerlie |
"Exactly. Bandits. They ask for money for protection. If we don't pay they start to 'remove' the beggars who visit our facility on regular base from the streets. You have to know that we care for each other, the younger beggars collect money on the streets and donate a part of it to this facility. This money is used to treat the old and sick and get food for those who can't collect money for themselves. The Steel Wyverns want this money, because it's easier to steal it from old and sick beggars. It's not easy to talk to the authorities on that case, because the church does not know that I'm using these rooms and they will not be happy when they hear about that." the Almsman answers hoping to give you a good reason to stay.
Kristen Mensbane |
"This sounds like a worthy job for us to perform in exchange for the information. If my colleagues have no objections, I say that we set an ambush for these bandits."
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"I am more than ready to eradicate bandits and predators. Let us hunt down and punish these sewer tyrants."
Jaegar performs a quick equipment check, transferring arrows from his pack to ensure his quiver is full. He replaces his items and sets his eyes on the canals ahead.
"Almsman, can you provide any specifics on their location, base camp, numbers, or resources? If they have caster or archer support it might change our tactics."
GM Baerlie |
"I don't have any information about their location or base camp. They usually visit us in groups of five: Randalan and four of his followers. If you could help us defend this facility and to repel the attackers, it would be enough and I will give you the information you are looking for." the Almsman says.
"I think it is time now to move." he says to the beggars in the room. "And please take care of Pteliut, Embram and Fandos, they are too weak to walk. Move them to the secret room."
He turns back to you "Those three men are infected with filth fever. I did what I could do to cure them, but my abilities are limited." he says with sadness in his eyes.
No need to go somewhere, the bad guys are coming to you. You have two hours to set up defenses. There is no furniture other than immovable sacrophagii (3 ft. high) in the sanctuary, but there is a plank bridge nearby. The doors are sturdy wooden doors and can be reinforced.
Gilfroy Fezziwig PFS |
"I'm not a combat strategist, but some of you are. You know what I can do: illusions of creatures or objects, a short-ranged cone of colours that can knock people unconscious, I can open and close doors from a distance, make illusory sounds, and fling acid at people. Put me where I'll be the most good."
Kristen Mensbane |
"My abilities are mostly focused on damaging spells, so I will likely hide myself behind one of these sarcophagi and sling spells at the intruders once they've entered."
Vrald Sehir |
"Do the wyverns come across that bridge?"
An evil glint enters his eye.
"If they did, we could remove it, and Gilfroy could 'replace' it for us...
That would give us a nice advantage to start with."
He looks at the structures.
"I think reinforcing the doors will do us little good. We must make it clear that to come here means pain and suffering for them. Make it worth their while to go else where for easier pickings."
He makes sure to keep his distance from the diseased beggars and their possessions.
Gilfroy Fezziwig PFS |
Gilfroy nods with a big grin. "You're starting to think like an illusionist. I can easily do that. If one of you makes a big show of 'casting' some sort of force spell the moment the first guy steps on the illusion, we might be able to convince the next guy that the leader was knocked off the bridge, rather than fell through. I doubt we'd get the third to try it, though."
Maeron Calaerdaer |
Maeron listens to the plans, before contributing himself.
"Tenderstump and I can help guard the entrance, beyond that we don't have much to contribute I'm afraid."
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
"Maeron, I think you're on to something. I think starting with ranged attacks on their ranged threats would make sense, bring down the archers and casters first.
Second, have a choke point for them attempting to enter this room. Force them to fight all of us one at a time. Perhaps we could use the beds to narrow the entryway to a single person. In that case, all of us are taking down one of them, in single file.
I see a two-stage plan:
1) Exterior defense - Take out casters, illusionary bridge, delay the melee attackers
-- Gilfroy, Kristin, Jaegar, Vrald trick and attack at range
-- Maeron, Tenderstump buff yourselves and work on battlefield control
2) Interior defense - Fall back, force them into our choke point, eliminate them single file
-- Maeron, Vrald, Tenderstump form a wall inside the room
-- Kristin, Gilfroy, Jaegar provide support to the front line
Does that sound reasonable to everyone?"
Jaegar looks around excitedly, hoping for validation.
I edited the map, with our target positions. I imagine Vrald, Tenderstump, and Maeron taking the three spaces blocking entry. I imagine Jaegar and Kristin taking the two flanking positions for ranged attack, with Gilfroy in a floating support position as necessary. Does that seem reasonable for our intended fall-back positions?
Kristen Mensbane |
"That all sounds very tactically sound, but remember that we don't need to kill anyone here. We should be trying to rough them up, not decapitate them. They just need to be sent a message."
Kristen Mensbane |
Kristen moves into position and readies herself to summon a celestial dire rat at the very first sign of the approaching bandits.
Readied action to use her conjurer's focus ability to summon a celestial dire rat which will stick around for 2 minutes or until it's reduced to 0 HP. She'll also cast mage armor on herself once we're within about 10 minutes of when they're supposed to show up, so that she'll benefit from it when they arrive.
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
Jaegar remains outside to act as ranged harassment before falling back into the crypt. He will try to prioritize any casters or archers before the assault arrives. Once the attackers get within a round of melee range he will fall back to the green circle opposite Kristen. Hopefully our melee fighters will take the three adjacent circles at the top of the steps.
GM Baerlie |
Also with a hole in the door you would not see the bridge, it is Downstream and there is no posibility to look around the corner.
Laughter and footsteps can be heard approaching from the west. A voice calls out “Almsman! What say you? Are you resisting or giving us what we want? I hope you’re resisting!”
Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
Jaegar said several times he was waiting to attack any visible casters or archers, then he would fall back. His bow has 110' range. As soon as any casters or archers are visible he plans to fire. If no casters or archers are visible he will fire at the leader.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Arrow Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
If the foes get within charge range Jaegar will fall back to his designated circle.
Gilfroy Fezziwig PFS |
Okay then, I guess they are all out front, which means Gilfroy made the illusory bridge right where it should be.
Gil has to concentrate, but somebody else is ready to pretend cast a spell that we'll pretend knocks the first guy off the bridge, in the hopes of fooling a second guy.
Kristen Mensbane |
I suppose in that case Kristen would also be outside, right next to Gilfroy. When an enemy starts crossing the bridge, she will make a big show of "casting" a spell and make a pushing motion toward the bridge, as if she were pushing him off from afar.
GM Baerlie |
In this case I have to expand the map, no archers and no casters.
On the other side of the channel you see four Steel Wyverns and the leader at the end of the group. They see an arrow coming their way and respond. "Oh, no money today, Almsman?"
Initiative Gilfroy: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (4) + 0 = 4
Initiative Jaegar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Initiative Maeron: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Jaegar Alvar Tarnshiav |
Jaegar uses his trait ability to ignore the Steel Wyvern directly in front of the leader. He then fires at the leader of the group, hoping to sow discord while the front of the pack is distracted by the illusory bridge.
Ranged Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Arrow Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
"Your Quest is Vain!"
What races are all the Steel Wyverns? Are they all human, half-orc, or whatnot?
GM Baerlie |
Jaegar shoots an arrow at Randalan and hits his shoulder. Maeron decides to wait until the bandits come closer.
The first bandit tries to cross the bridge but steps into the air. He tries to grab hold at the walkway but is not fast enough and falls into the channel. The water is 3ft deep so he can stand in the water.
Reflex to grab the ledge of the walkway: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (11) + 0 = 11
Will Save to see it's an illusion: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
I hope I'm doing this right. Never had a bridge illusion before :D, DC to disbelieve?

Kristen's action is to feign casting a spell just as that bandit steps onto the bridge.
Bluff: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Vrald Sehir |
Vrald readies an action to strike the first bandit in range.
I'll roll now. I'm guessing there may also be an AOO if they have to climb up, and I'm assuming a height bonus on the attack roll if they are in the sewer. Of course they may just attack from in the sewer.
attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (10) + 9 = 19
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
AOO: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

Soooooo quiet week, huh...
Everything Below is out of character:
On the bright side, I got some awesome stuff in the Golem Sale!
- 8x Pathfinder Tales Novels for $5 apiece. All the 'on sale' ones I didn't already have.
- 5/6 of Serpent's Skull adventure path for $5 apiece. I found #1 on Amazon for $18. The out of print stuff is tough to get.
- I at one point had 38 modules in my cart at $3.50 or $1 apiece, but decided I didn't really need them.
- I can't wait for the 2014 PaizoCon pint glasses to go on sale. I have the others, and I love them. I'm perhaps an excessive beer drinker, and I love those pint glasses!
