Welcome to the Discussion page of the campaign. Here is where we will first discuss the details of the campaign as we decide them. Then once the game begins, here is where I would like any ooc discussions to be had. Short, exciting, or congratulatory ooc stuff can be in the main thread, but if it is to be a discussion, back and forth, please use this thread for that.

One thing to notice, above this first post you should see some links. The ones here are for the details of the discussion we are about to have. Feel free to read them. Also, be aware that they appear on all threads and there will be more shortly (maps, handouts, etc.).

Thanks again, and good game.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

I'll start with step one. I like the concept of a group of heroes more than mercenaries. Our characters should be motivated to work together for more than the promise of personal gain. I think it'll make for a more enjoyable story.

Dark Archive

I agree with Mat on this, I would also prefer to run a game with characters that are driven by more than personal gain. A game where they serve some kind of cause.

Absolutely agreed. Heroes sounds good. Connections to each other can be more of a personal nature.

Male Hoo-mahn

I concur with the heroes theme. I don't think I'd enjoy Pathfinder from a perspective of mercenaries.

Dark Archive

In the effort to move things along, and since I already discussed this part with Kaaras, I am confirming that we all are agreeing that driven (heroics) is the way we want to go. So, let's get the next phase going.

Take a look at the space above these posts (above the first post). These are links to the steps we will be taking over the next few days/weeks. Clink on the second link, Where In The World... Read it over and then let's discuss where we feel will be best to start this game.

As for me, while I am willing and able to run a game in any of these locations, I am going to post the three I feel would be my favorites. I will also give you a reason I feel this way. So, in particular order...

1. Falcon's Hollow: This was the first setting I saw for Pathfinder, it was used as the setting for their first non-Dungeons & Dragons module. Also, two of my favorite monsters are common there, Kobolds and Lycanthropes.

2. Ravengro: Who doesn't love classic horror? Ravengro is in Ustalav which is basically world of darkness light. Vampires, Werewolves, Ghosts... Oh my! Plus it borders the Holds of Belkzen, so orcs are right around the corner.

3. Solku: Beseiged by gnolls (another favorite monster of mine) and right near a haunted abandoned dwarven mine. Also, it is also the only location on the list that is actually good aligned as a whole.

So, that is my opinion. I want to know what others think, and if you know of a location you want to add to the list, let us know.

Male Hoo-mahn

I like Falcon's Hallow and Solku, but I'm also intrigued by Pezzack.

Pezzack? Any particular reason why?

Dark Archive

Having already adventured in Falcon's Hallow, I'd have to choose either Ravengro or Solku. My first choice was Ravengro.

None of the others interest you?

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Wati is also interesting (Solomon's hometown). I don't care much for Cheliax or Varisia (Pezzack and Ilsurian don't interest me at all). So if I were to order them by preference:

#1.) Ravengro
#2.) Solku
#3.) Wati
#4.) Eledar
#5.) Falcon's Hallow
#6.) Trunau
#7.) Ilsurian
#8.) Pezzack

I would adore Ravengro - it fits the theme of the character I had in mind quite well.

Ranked a little behind Ravengro would be Solku. Never really had gnolls as an enemy before. Sounds fun.

Lastly, but not bad sounding by any stretch, would be Falcon's Hollow. While I *love* Kobolds, Lycanthropes aren't my favorite. Love me some good old Wererats... then a GM sprung Were-Velociraptor on me. Decided that was a good point to start hating them. :)

Well ask Janiak sometime about the Goblin Weresnakes. I so have to do that again. HeHeHe!

Anything specific about these locations that draws you to them?

I like the political structure in Cheliax, and I like the idea of rebelling against it. If we play in a setting involving Cheliax, I rather be fighting it than playing along with it.

I'm not sure how I feel about Ravengro. I like the occasional brush with undead horror, but I'm not sure I want to do a full campaign around it.

I agree with fighting against rather than for, though I am so looking forward to reading the Hell's Vengeance AP.

Two things with this, one undead horrors are just one of the things we could do with Ravengro and hearing this I will steer away from heavily involving that element. And two, well Wati is even less likely then since your neighbors their are all dead(ish).

Thanks for the feedback and info though. This is what I am looking for, not only a vote but the reasons so I also know what other aspects to focus on.

I'm not really looking for a lot of political intrigue with this campaign. Mostly because I feel that sort of thing would only appeal to half or less of the PC characters. I'd also rather start out small before being thrust into full scale rebellion against empires & devils.

We can compromise though: Solku and Falcon's Hallow are good choices I think. A good mix of monsters and not too far removed from civilization for the socialite toons.

Ebonezer Hellfire wrote:

This is definitely accurate. Solku and Falcon's Hallow are full of potential for social types as well as hard core adventurers.

Male Hoo-mahn

FYI, I don't want a game with a lot of political intrigue directly involving the group. I've just always liked the concept of people fighting for their freedom from Chelaxian rule. We would be something along the lines of "freedom fighters" in Pezzack, I'd imagine.

I'm definitely happy with both Solku and Falcon's Hallow. I've played in campaigns in both Andoran and Katapesh, but not these two settlements specifically.

My vote is Ravengro or Falcon, in that order. I'd go into more, but I'm on my phone and save this post alone took longer than I care to admit.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

After re-reading the maps and descriptions of every town, I'm actually leaning more toward Solku as my first choice & Falcon's Hallow as my second choice.

Wati is out since it's mostly all undead. Honestly, Ravengro is alot of the same. Unless we really want to be dealing with undead and demons all the time (most of the time).?

Talalmackk Chirronna wrote:

Won't lie - for me Ravengro + the horror mention just made me think Ravenloft. And I loved Ravenloft. Reading more about the setting, it has a very Barovia kinda feel and all of Ustalav seems like a massive Dreadlord Domain like Darkon.

This seems like it would be great for a deep roleplay game that doesn't involve a ton of political intrigue. Besides, if we get tired of the doom & gloom, we can always head out. Since we're starting at 5th level, we won't exactly be strapped for resources.

The Cheliax idea sounds fun as well - much easier to change up the pace of that kinda game now and then.

Dark Archive

So, we have narrowed it down a bit but we seem to leaning toward a few ideas.

I suggest everyone reread the link again, check out the places of interest of each of the following locations as well as the map of each. See how you feel about the again. Then let us see what we can come up with.

The places are:

Falcon's Hollow
Pezzack
Ravengro
Solku

Thanks.

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Ok. Here's my updated preferences (and my interpretion of the discussion preferences).

#1.) Solku (1 PC vote ,Me, GM preference)
#2.) Falcon's Hallow (3 secondary PC votes ,Me ,Kaaras & JDDyslexia , GM preference)
#3.) Ravengro (2 PC votes ,Dobreev & Kaaras, GM preference)
#4.) Pezzack (1 PC vote ,JDDyslexia)

Here's the new options as I see it unless anyone else wants to add more to the discussion.

#1.) Ravengro
#2.) Falcon's Hallow

Male Hoo-mahn

Here's my priority list:

#1) Solku
#2) Pezzack
#3) Falcon's Hallow
#4) Ravengro

Dark Archive

So, this did not go as planned. There seems to be some confusion over what info we had and where to start. Maybe the location needs to come more organically, this is an experimental type approach really. With that said, let's table the where and move on to the who.

I have put up the guidelines of what I will and will not allow (or discuss as needed), the LINK is here and above again. There are multiple pages so make sure to scroll down. If you already looked it over be sure to look again as at least one thing has changed. Look them over, check things out. See what ideas you have and start discussing them.

For this part I am stepping back and becoming more of a silent observer. If there is a question, I will answer it. And if there is an obvious issue I will step in. But from here it is your discussion as they are your characters and your party.

So, who wants to play what? (I know for most of you the answer will be easy but let's see what the rest of the group thinks about them.

Male Hoo-mahn

Umm, the problem is what I want to play is going to vary by setting, as I'll probably try to create a character relatively local to the area. So, in all honestly, I really can't move forward with that until I have an idea of where.

Dark Archive

JDD that is valid. So, let's give it tonight. Dobby and Karaas, give us your final opinions of the four locations, and we can review and decide in the morning.

I've looked over the locations and still stand by Ravengro as my first pick. Tied for second will be Pezzack and Eleder. I like the idea of a game that can truly go off the beaten path yet still have some elements to what would make Pezzack fun, as we're still technically in Cheliax.

Solku and Falcon's Hollow come in just behind them.

Dark Archive

Well, I think this has come to a decision time.

Solku is on the top of several peoples's lists (Ebonezer, JDD, and myself). Dobreev is okay with it and Karass had no opinion on it specifically. So, I think we can say we wish to adventure in and around Solku.

Now, I will start working out some ideas. And you can start working on the characters. As before there is a guide linked about. Check it out and get going.

Also, during the discussion, please also work out some things you wish to specifically do while adventuring there. Are there places you specifically want to visit, outside of Solku. Sites and such.

I will also be posting some further info later tonight specifically about Solku for those interested.

Thanks.

Dark Archive

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

I'd say my 2 interest areas around Solku would be the gnolls in White Canyon and the Beehive.

These two seem like the best adventuring opportunities for heroic characters. Both areas are filled with threats to the city that might need to be dealt with.

Another fun place might be the Gembasket. I dunno if anyone has a crafter in mind but it seems like a good place to collect rare raw materials.

Dark Archive

For those that are interested I have added two more links to the top of the campaign. A map of Solku and a map of Katapesh. Hope this helps.

A little sandy, but snakes like sand.

Alrighty guys, Ill start rolling the ball.

I have a pretty cool idea for a druid I'd like to play. Shaman Archetype. All about snakes. Constrictors to be specific. I'd play your healer, and have a lot of summon spells.Snake animal companion as well. One of the ideas I had would come in at level 6, where I can spend 24 hours a day as a snake, probably hanging around someones neck. Giving us the jump in situations if people were doing a head count. I'd have wild spell and nature speech so we could communicate if needed while I was incognito. Also would be willing to play utility spells as well. Going for the apathetic N alignment. Death is a part of life. As far as the RP stuff, there is a jungle on the other side of the mountains near by that I could be from, or I could play a desert druid as well, if our origin story doesn't include us being anywhere near that swamp. But swamp or desert, either way I figured one or all of you may have stumbled into my area of nature and ended up needing assistance of some kind and I helped. I guided you to where it was you were headed and decided it was time to venture out and asked if I could travel with you.

I know we decided on hero types, so who is the next hereo?!

Male Hoo-mahn

The Three Stars and The Lightning Stones stick out to me. I think if Kaaras is going druid, he could probably dig on the Lightning Stones aspect.

I'm holding off on describing my idea(s) for a character for now. I have a few floating around in my mind, and I'll gladly choose one that fits best with the group. I rather let other people who have a strong idea on what they want to do chime in and pitch their ideas.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

I was looking at a Dhampir Cleric (Separatist)/Gunslinger (Mysterious Stranger) multiclass. A worshipper of Iomedae (NG alignment). He would have likely originated from Ustalav or Mendev but traveled far and came in contact with the other heroes through various encounters and adventures (swamp or desert works). He is a wanderer and crusader by nature who also enjoys gambling and other games of chance.

Tactically, he would be a short range/long range damage machine. Also capable of support healing and a good deal of Charisma based skills. More details to come. However, I'm also flexible and will adjust based on what we need. Nothing set in stone here. Just my idea.

I suppose I should add I would be MR Nature for the party, IE nature skills, survival, tracking, etc. Kaaras is a half orc who is far more orc than half. But civilized, as much as a druid can be. Combat would be mostly support/control and at a range. with my animal companion grappling for the melee folks. I have yet to decide on if I have a deity, or just follow the laws of nature. Otherwise other details will be added as we get closer to a solid group

The concept I'm working on is a NG Human Alchemist with a strong acid theme. Some of the elements of his backstory are up in the air and definitely down to tie some together with others. His role in the party will be more toward control/support than outright damage, with discoveries that'll be geared toward hindering enemies than damaging them. That said, he'll still be able to bring the pain when needed.

Male Hoo-mahn

It definitely sounds like we'll need a melee fighter/tank class. I mentioned to Jeremy my idea for a poi fighter, but I could also go swashbuckler or another melee class (I've always wanted to check out skald). I'll start looking into it.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Sounds like we also have a lack of disarming traps and arcane firepower. I'll look at boosting my character in disarming and more UMD.

Dark Archive

I will put this out there... Rangers can make great melee/tank like characters and the trap ranger only loses spells really. So, it is a good option.

I like the thinking so far. I'm interested in seeing what you come up with not only mechanically but also story wise. I think we ended up more south than some suspected but I think the ideas should work in the area as well.

If there are ideas but you don't know names and such to apply to the idea, shoot it by me and I should be able to work things out.

Good job guys.

Male Hoo-mahn

If I can go ranger to take care of the traps situation, I'll do that. I think the Alchemist could cover some Arcane firepower for us.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Ok. Since both the Alchemist (Trapbreaker/Cryptbreaker) & Ranger (Urban Ranger/Trapper) have good trap options. I think even the druid could do it (Nature Fang). I'll let someone else ride that horse.

Male Hoo-mahn

My one concern right now is solid healing. We should probably try to nail that down.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Well. I think if you want a strong channeler (aka "Solid Healing"), we'll be back at the drawing board for character concepts.

Unfortunately, unique, powerful channelers are few and far between.

Cleric - Any
Paladin - Any
Oracle - Life mystery
Shaman - Life Spirit
Witch - Hex Channeler

Other than that, you're looking at single target heals that don't get any better than what a druid can offer until much higher levels.

So far, our mentioned concepts include small bits of healing that might actually suffice for our healing needs.

Druid - Single target heals
Cleric/Gunslinger - 1st lvl channel (positive energy). Self-healing (Inflict)
Alchemist - Cure extracts - Self only (Unless infusion discovery).
JDDyslexia - Unknown

Male Hoo-mahn

I think if half of the party is capable of support healing it should suffice.

Dark Archive

So, it seems there are a few things to discuss.

1: Healing - Is the druid's heals and the alchemist's possible additions enough? Do we need a low-level cleric or a fully devoted healer? I think it could be interesting to have a party without a channeling character.

2: Traps - There are a few options for traps. There are tank trapfinders (slayer is one option, ranger has two different archetypes) and there are arcane trapfinders as well (alchemist has two and there is a sorcerer combo one that works). Tthere are also druids that can do it and of course rogues. But the question is, do you need it?

This discussion is going well. Keep it up.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

Well. I'm willing to alleviate one of the concerns. I can switch to a full-blown healer who is also a capable short/long range damage dealer.

I can go Dhampir Paladin (Holy Gun) and it still fits with my story concepts. (That means LG alignment of course).

Who wants to take up the job of finding traps?

Male Hoo-mahn

I don't think you need to go full heal. As long as two party members are capable of healing, I think we're good.

Dark Archive

Male Human (Chelaxian) Warpriest/7 - Hellknight/4

You're right. I would prefer the Gunslinger over the Paladin. I just want to make sure we have our bases covered in terms of game mechanics. The Dhampir may also not be the best race choice for this small of a group. I will look into other options.

Let me know what you guys are planning so I can bounce some ideas around.

JDDyslexia - Do you want to play the tank/defense? (Tank/Fighter?)
Dobreev - Is your alchemist going to handle traps? (Skill/Rogue?)
Kaaras - Is your druid going to focus more on healing and less on offense to support the rest of the group? (Divine/Healer?)
Ebonezer - I may consider an arcane caster to balance out the group. (Arcane?)

Male Hoo-mahn

Right now, I'm looking at making a human Ranger with the Falconer and Trapper archetypes. I'll be a two-weapon ranger, so I can be front-line melee who can handle traps.
