In the waning light of day, when shadows stretch along the beaten furrows of the caravan ruts, and the twinkling light of Golarion's stars start to shimmer in the purple sky, the caravan manager walks you up to a crackling camp fire. Four hewn stumps are occupied by four caravan guards. All the occupants are scooping some sort of oily brown stew into their mouths from carved bowls with horn spoons.

"New guards." the caravan master declares to the four. "Heard there was trouble further down the road before we hit Jace’s Stanchion. Best keep your wits about you." and with that statement of the obvious, he turns heel and strides back towards his wagon.

None of the four look up as you approach the fire until you are close enough to feel its warmth. You notice that two of the four are obviously related, dark haired, strapping youths. "I am Morris, and this is my brother Simon." one of the guards announces. You see that next to his stump rests a huge, two-handed sword.

"Look at that one’s boots, Morris. Quite a fancy pair for someone supposed to be guarding a caravan." adds in Simon as he flips a pair of knives with one hand.

The remainder of the group is rounded out by a married couple. ”I am Syonne." states a comely, red-headed woman. "This is our fire and you will find a different one to warm yourself." as she finishes talking, her apparent husband rises from his carved stump and interposes himself between you and her. "If you are smart, you will listen to her. I am Bertrand, one of the smartest people you will ever meet because I know to listen to my wife." he chuckles, his heavy brown beard wagging forth. "Though she may be gruff of tongue, she has the right of it. Places around the fire are earned, and green recruits make their own fire.

"You also will take rear detail on the caravan when we pull out tomorrow when we head into Haver's Marshland. Anything west of the Barony of Soliel is basically a lawless land outside of the small settlements." The large man resumes sitting and eating, clearly finished with the conversation.

You all know, though many of you are novices, that rear detail is the worst, most dangerous post when guarding a caravan.

"I too have a brother, Aidan, but it seems we've become separated..." he continues, looking about the camp. "Oh well, I'm sure he'll be fine."

Character Description:
A towering woman with closecropped black hair and burnished skin, Vara seems a little scaled up. Her hands and feet are oversized, even in proportion to the rest of her body.

She also carries herself a little 'larger than life', almost posturing when she stands still. This behavior clashes badly with her cheap gear, a set of heavy armor of low quality, insofar as heavy armor is ever badly made, ill-fitting roughspun clothes and the oversized greataxe she carries easily in one hand.

The most exotic thing about her is probably the five decorted throwing discs that dangle from her belt.

Vara makes an absent-minded gesture, running her right hand through hair that isn't there any more. So they were going to play this like a power thing. Eh, she'd heard and said worse, and beating them in the pit always sorted that behavior out...

Huh. Okay, so she'd be a good guardsman, kill some highwaymen fairly brutally.

She simply grunts in acknowledgement of the veterans' somewhat hostile greeting - it's about what that s!++ deserves. "C'mon." she tells the other four newbloods, and sets about gathering wood and setting up another fire, at the opposite site of the trail from the previous one.

At the back of the group of new guards a tiny figure, wrapped in an all weather cape, listens intently to the exchange.

Intimidation is it... how fun.

Turning awkwardly it hobbles after Vera, leaning heavily on the polearm it caries.

It mutters in a buzzing, clipped tone

"Squirm!"

Pipes up the dromite at the first sign of a pause in conversation

"That's my name. For reasons which may become clear in time. I of course am a mighty warrior, slayer of elder dragons and wooer of many beautiful creatures."

A cheeky grin flashes across its oddly formed mouth as Squirm gathers armfuls of tiny twigs and begins to build a miniature copy of the fire Vara is building, right beside it.

"oh and burning stuff, lots of that, all the time I'm burning villages and the like, that's what warriors do right?"

Well! You sound like a mighty warrior Squirm! cough cough As I roll my eyes! Excuse me! No, warriors should not burn villages - unless of course the entire village is your enemy - but other than that yes, fire is the GREAT purifier of all things. "Stories? Nay, Christaph, for I only know legends" replies Neils as he moves towards the groups fire. "For I am not a warrior - I am destined to be a hero, the greatest of them that have ever lived!" Neils speaks with his best attempt at a heroic voice. He stands with his head held high, though he is not impressively tall by any measure.

"Honor and Justice burn within my bossom, hot like the very fire we warm ourselves around. Let all villains beware, for a new age of heroes is dawning!"

Neils continues on this way until stopped. He stops paying attention to his companions and is drawn further and further into his own world as he weaves romantic prophecies of heroism and valor.

Christaph's retort is met with stoic silence, and odd glances. After finishing standing up for his newly met work acquaintances, Christaph and the others quickly move to create their own campsite. They scrounge around and seem to find some serviceable firewood ignoring the survival roll and quickly get a small fire going. The red-yellow tongues flick towards the darkening sky as the group quickly gets to know each other.

The caravan breaks camp early the following morning. You quickly learn the the rear is the worst position. No sooner do the wagons rumble forth then a fog of eye clouding, throat coating, and nose clogging dust cover you from head to toe. In only a matter of minutes, at least two of you have stepped into a newly steaming pile of ox dung. Organic and smelly, no amount of wiping can keep the cloying stench of feces from your dust covered nose.

The seconds stretch into minutes, minutes to hours, hours to a lifetime of watching the carts rumble gently downhill into Haver's Marshland. Lush, tall, green grasses frame a shallow stream bed below. The ground makes a squishy sound each time anyone rises a foot from the moist soil.

From nowhere, a team of creatures rise from the grass. Some of these creatures stand on two legs and reach the height of a full grown human male. Their heads resemble common ruminates of the plains, such an antelope, while their bodies are covered in soft brown fur. With a loud grunting howl, they raise their clubs and rush the caravan.

The other creature is a striped beast with patchy black fur and a flat tail. A soft hum seems to come from it as it turns in your direction. The creature’s maws open in a snarl to reveal rows of long, sharp teeth that can easily tear flesh.

From all over you can hear other creatures attacking up and down the caravan, and you know you are on your own.

The Tactical Map is updated.

Initiative Rolls:

Christaph Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Furred Creature Int: 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 + 2 = 17

The antlered creatures rush the caravan, club arcing in a wild swing at the guards. At the last minute, Vara and Neils see the creatures pull back slightly on their swings.

Neils flinches as the club is brought against him, only to find the blow to leave little more than a deep bruise. He blinks in surprise but shakes it off quickly. He sizes up the creature and smiles.

"Let me show you mine" he says with a smirk even as a form of crackling lightning takes shape in his hand. Once again Christaph calls forth the psionic energy of his mind, thrusting it into the creatures primeval brain.

Will Save, DC 15 negates: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

This time the creature is able to thrust the elan out of its head. Uttering a howl of pain, the ferax leaves little doubt as to its next victim.

Squirm sees the giantess go down and looks up at the antlered creature that is no longer distracted

"Too small for you friend, not worth the effort. Besides, I sting!"

The horrific tentacle once more slithers out to caress the creatures goaty face.

As the antlered creature and the dromite battle it out, the dread once more lashes out with one of its tentacles. Almost caressing the antlered creature's face, it slaps it upside the head rocking the creature back.

It stares the dromite down, waiting for an opportunity to repay the favor.

Neils has little time to savor his victory. He hears the commotion and sounds of more fighting coming from the other side of the cart. Readying his blade, he quickly rounds the corner and spots the cat and his fallen companion. His emotions flare, and the mind blade gripped in his hand explodes with psychic energy in response.

"Not so fast, flea bag!" he shouts and he brings up his sword in a horizontal slash, aiming to cleave the cat in two.

Neils' mind blade easily slices through the ferax's neck as a spray of blood arcs towards the caravan. The creature slumps to the ground, life blood streaming out of it as its eyes close forever.

In the din of battle, the caravan guards notice that the humming noise has subsided, and all that can be heard are the sound of battle up and down the caravan.

The antlered creature once again swings it club reluctantly at the dromite, hoping to repay him for the two solid hit he landed earlier.

Antlered Creature Gore vs Squirm: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

The antlered creature misses with his antlers, but solidly connects with his club. THe low might have been enough to kill the dromite, but once again the caravan guards can tell it is holding back some as he falls unconscious to the ground.

Neils continues his war path across the rear of the caravan, falling upon the last ambusher from behind.

"Hero's here friend, which means your time is up!" Once again his mind blade flares up and the air is brimming with palpable electricty around Neils. Feeling full of himself, he decides to finish the fight with a flourish. He spins on his right foot just as he gets within reach of the antlered creature, tucking into an odd twirl and using the momentum for a horizontal slash aimed right at the things neck.

Christaph once again enters the mind of the caravan's attacker, severing firing synapses. But it is Neils and his destructive, electric blade that drops the creature to the ground.

Combat over, nice job!

The weary group looks to Vara and Squirm as they lay alive, but unconscious on the marshy ground.

The group is approached by the four caravan guards they had met previously. Morris is much larger than before and he strides towards them with a huge, two-handed sword bared and dripping blood. His brother Simon walks slightly behind him, flipping a knife hilt over blade almost in a subconscious way. The married couple Syonne and a heavily-bearded, laughing Bertrand follow. You can see remnants of the shards of crystalline earth they conjured to hurl at the antlered creatures and feraxes.

"Need any help here?" asks Simon in an offhand way.

From behind, the group can see the caravan master running in a panicked way, checking on cargo and guard alike to assess the damage his precious caravan suffered.

"I think we cleaned up nicely back here" say neils breathing heavily from exertion. In the back of his mind he knew he had pushed himself close to his limit. Still panting, he starts to regain his focus before adding "Those two - Vara and Squirm - caught the worst of it. They'll need the most of anyone if you're offering"

"Don't know how much we have, but we can help out. Caravan master has a stash that Simon nicks from, from time to time that is. Party of greenies like you should really know how to heal a friend up. Especially if you are in this for the long haul, like Syonne and I." comes Bertrand's terse reply.

Simon spins his knife in a whirl before he sheathes it and whips out two potions of CLW in one fluid motion. He tosses one to Neils and one to Christaph.

Ok healing - anyone have some means to do so? If not we can handwave some and gives yourself a day of bed rest to heal up.

"Thanks for the supplies - and the advice!" says Neils cheerfully. "I simply don't have the knowledge or expertise to heal my friends, so it's a good thing you came along. How were things up at the front?"

Neils finishes speaking as he moves to Vara and administers the potion.

CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Hell yeah baby, that's good for 9 points of healing and 9 points of NL healing for Vara. She should be conscious at the very least.

I don't need bed rest. I only took 6 nonlethal which should wear off by the time we make camp this evening

"That's something." Vara idly kicks one of the dead humanoids in the side, then kneels down and tries to see if the antlers come off when she gives them a good pull.

The caravan master heads over, "Well, that was horrible. Lost a few good guards, but thankfully the goods are still intact. Regardless if you are injured or not, we need to put some miles in the marsh lands. Best push on and make camp tonight."

The caravan makes steady progress throughout the day, stopping only briefly to break their fast and tend to the beasts of burden. Reaching a semi-defensible position the caravan master calls the caravan to a halt and instructs the groups to make camp for the night.

This is repeated for the next few days ...until ...

It was supposed to be an easy job— escort a wagon full of grain to a remote outpost through a relatively barren marshland. But things have only gone from bad to worse as the journey has worn on. First, one of the guards vanished in the night. Then the creatures appeared—man-like things with the heads of nightmarish antelopes and a ferocious hatred of intruders. Days of ceaseless attacks have finally taken their toll on the caravan. The strange creatures have attacked the traders and their guards mercilessly, each attack taking a few of the guards with it. In this latest attack the creatures managed to cripple some of the convoys’ horses, leaving the cart a shattered wreck. I will signify pro forma text from the module using this format.

The weary and battered guards know it is only a matter of minutes before they reach the relative safety of the town. Out of nowhere, a squad of antlered creatures appears with a pack of feraxes. Against these overwhelming odds, the group can see and hear the caravan master point to a path ahead and shout, “The trail to Jace’s Stanchion lies that way! There are too many to fight! Run you bastards!”

Let me know if you are making a stand or running.

Squirm slowly regains consciousness in the back of one of the wagons

Not the finest first impression I have ever made 'tiny bug that feints at the first knock he takes' what must they think of little old me eh

Slipping silently from the makeshift bed as soon as it feels able Squirm returns to his position keeping an eye out for more attackers, keeping its distance from the other green guards.

The days and skirmishes that follow are horrific, and still Squirm feels a deep need to prove himself.

and now...

As the huge force emerges to finally destroy the caravan squirm is quick to act. Scrabbling onto the back of the trailing wagon he turns to fa the attackers

"GO GO GO! First one to come near will regret it!"

Aiming to run, first attacker to approach gets aunearthly terror to the face
