Rova |
"I'd best drag m' stuff to th' barn. Hate fer him ta hurt hisself luggin' m' armor."
Rova steps out for a few minutes, and returns with what can only be called a sword..save for the fact it's 11' long.
"I'd better check th' edge on this. Mighta dulled it a bit."
Rova |
Rova sharpens a chipped portion of the blade while listening to Vertielle recount thier past discoveries...
Rova mutters "Thought it was a gargoyle.. Sworn it moved.." while repairing the edge on the damaged area.
Rova looks up, whetstone in hand, and comments, "So, if I'm followin' this, there were five named prissners, an' ya dealt wid two of 'em. Ya 'spectin' th' other t'ree ta be waitin' fer us?"
Rova |
"So, tha' leaves dis splatterman, th' Mosswater murderer, an' Lopper. They ghosts or still got bodies? Ya dunno yet, do ya? Guess we'll fin' out."
Rova resheathes his repaired blade.
"Iff'n they're ghosts, I'll need a whammy ta hurt'em. I've not th' gold ta get dis enchanted..yet."
Vertielle Siepar |
So far we've had none too much trouble. There's a cache of arrows I'm carrying you're welcome to, but I daresay they'll do ye little good.
Vertielle considers a moment, flipping through some of her notes.
It's possible the steel itself need not be arcforged, but rather... Well, no... But if... Here. She points to a nonsensical paragraph in a dusty old tome more story than history, all manner of glyphs scrawled in the margins.
I think the essence of a ghost's invulnetability is it's disconnection with physicality. If a weapon were to quasimanifest on a submatetial level aspects of arcane tempering, the base effect might be enough to manifest bi-existent space into a singularity on one plane. I don't think it matters which plane, either, since the singularity would comprise a demiplane itself!
She looks rather pleased with herself.
See? Problem solved.
Wood the Wizard |
After helping Kendra copy some spells, Wood remarks, "I feel the burden to live up to your dad's legacy. But I also find myself consumed with a hatred for these evil spirits, these five horrible criminals."
Wood rejoins the group later, "I still have problems with my spellcasting. The splatterman's book seems to make me want to keep every spell to myself, as if casting them is wasted. I purchased a cloak to help me resist, but it will continue to be a problem."
To Rova, "We have a consecrated weapon we have been leant to use on these evil creatures. Where did Gkirkan leave it?"
Zhiden Enack |
"Oh, that makes sense," Zhiden said, wondering why she hadn't said that from the beginning. After Wood commented that the spellbook was making him stingy, Zhiden couldn't help but wonder aloud,"If it is causing problems like that, then why don't you get rid of it?"
Wood the Wizard |
"Well, I think on morrow we head to Harrowstone. Maybe we buy some more holy water with our good neighbor discount and head out."
Wood points to his four vials of holy water he has ready to go.
"You can't enough holy water in Harrowstone. Maybe Rova can hit stuff with that mace and not need so much."
Rova |
"Well, mace isn't m' best weapon, but I thin' I kin make an impact." Rova grins at his rather droll wordplay.
"Iffn we're headin' out in the morrow, I'd best be gettin' some rest. Haven't rested well fer a couple days now. Wake me befer breakfast, an' I'll cook us up sommthin'."
Rova gathers his tools, along with his blade, and makes for the barn.
Rova |
After some help, Rova strides out of the barn in his dull black full plate. Strapped across his back is that massive sword/polearm, and at his side is the silver mace loaned to him.
"I'm gonna swing by th' armory an' grab a shield. Hope it ain't too far outta da way."
Female_NPC_recruitable |
kendra speaks up. "Before you go, let me do a fate reading for you, like I did for the others."
After the table has been cleared she pulls out an old but elaborate box containing Harrow cards.
She looks up at the rest of the group. "Please, lay your cards here and spread the six fate cards, face up, in front of the deck. Kirik, Gkirkhan and Que left theirs, so..."she shuffles three cards back in.
"Rova, Zhiden, please, clear your minds and touch the deck."
After both of you have done so, she shuffles the deck again and deals out the two top cards, one to each of you.
Rova gets The Bear, from the Hammers suit.
Zhiden gets The Teamster, from the Shields suit.
"Interesting. Neither of you recieved any of the returned cards. I hope that means that our allies may return some time."
Zhiden Enack |
Zhiden shrugged, and said "I'm pretty good at making do. Besides, I don't like owing people, even for a little while." He let it go unsaid how much the debt that he owed to Professor Lorrimor had eaten him up over that year or two, especially now that he wouldn't be able to pay it back.
Zhiden looked a little dubious at the Harrow deck, but he played along. When his card had been dealt, he said, "So what does all of that mean?"
Vertielle Siepar |
Means you're carrying the loot, slip, Vertielle says in good humor.
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
"Slip" is chelish and naval slang for a Halfling Slave or Servant, and her casual use of it suggests she's rather used to the nomenclature.
Zhiden Enack |
At hearing the comment, Zhiden's eyes went wide, as though he'd been slapped, and then narrowed. His hands balled into fists, and he spoke through bared teeth, "I suggest you don't call me that, mutt."
Zhiden didn't want to cause a scene, somewhere in the back of his mind, but the part of him that was in control was as mad as he'd ever been that everything he'd been through, everything he'd suffered was being thrown in his face, and so casually, at that.
Female_NPC_recruitable |
Kendra says "The cards can effect things you do, allowing you to adjust fate in some fashion. The one I dealt you specifically effects you, those six that were drawn first affect the goal as a whole. I feel that this one" she touches The Uprising "is relevant to Harrowstone specifically. The others...I'm afraid that the events here are part of something larger we have been drawn into. They play into that, but for now, I don't know how or why."

Asuming everyone is ready...
It is with a sense of deja vu that you stand around the soot-stained ruins of the elevator to the lowest level of the old prison. From what little light streams into the hole from your light sources, you cannot make out the bottom.
Your preparations made, you begin your descent.
Let me know the order in which you are descending and the method of descent each of you will be using.
Evangline Valeria Aurora |
Vertielle Siepar |
Vertielle had the presence of mind to purchase a Dungeoneering Kit, which she organizes before heading out: 2 candles, chalk, a hammer and 4 pitons, 50 feet of silk rope, 2 sacks, 3 sunrods, 4 tindertwigs, and an everburning torch.
Rova can lower, say, Eva or Zhiden down with the rope, and they can hammer in the Pitons. Won't be stealthy, but it's the only way I see that we're getting back up with everyone.
Zhiden Enack |
Surprised that Vartielle hadn't replied to him, Zhiden felt foolish. He decided to let the matter drop, and act as though she'd said nothing at all. "It will probably be easier if I volunteer, best not to waste any more strength than required this early."
Zhiden checked his pack, dismayed at what he found. No rope? He always carried rope, but not this time, when he actually needed it.
Rova |
"I don' have any rope. I suspec' I kin lower alla ya, but might be best iffn we fin' some rope, an' tie it off ta sommthin' solid-like. I shou' be unner 500 pounds, gear an' all."
Rova peers into the depths.
"Gettin' down's easy. It's gettin' back up we shou' be plannin' fer."
Vertielle Siepar |
Vertielle sighs, holding out her rope, neatly coiled. The eight-ply silk coil is not well worn, but looks quite durable. She tosses her pouch of pitons with the hammer attached to Zhiden as he volunteered, and goes over the plan.
Getting down is no trouble. We can pass the ring back and forth with some string, she holds up her thread, or simply descend with the rope. Getting back up will be more difficult. If it does seem to be a serious issue, then I will go up first and summon a horse to help pull. I think on the way down, Zhiden should be lowered first and affix these pitons to the wall. They'll make handy footholds on the way back up, and we'll leave the rope anchored to a spike up here.
The rope can be burst with a DC 24 STR check, suggesting a carrying capacity of approximately a half ton. This is actually less than regular 8-ply hemp rope, which is generally somewhere in the three ton maximum weight range.
Wood the Wizard |
Once again Wood is amazed at the decisiveness and cleverness of the bard. "Ok, let's do it. Rova, better have you use the ring. Don't wanna test the limits of the rope right off." Wood hands the ring to Rova and shows Zhiden how to get the magic stone to orbit about his head like Rova's light stone.
Rova |
"I'll head down first. I can secure da floor whilst th' resta ya get th' rope set up."
Rova looks down at the ring, with a puzzled look on his face.
"An' iffn this is a joke an' I go hurlin' down, I'm gonna be a bit miffed."
Rova dons the ring, readies the silver mace and shield, and gets ready to hop in the pit.
Vertielle Siepar |
Better you be down there and miffed than up here and miffed, Vertielle says cheerfully, tying a few knots to form a harness.
She's accidentally made a medium-sized harness. Frowning, she reties it to more appropriately fit Zhiden.
The_Ninja_DM |
Smart. Send the newbies down first.
The chamber you arrive in is huge. If it was once a cellblock, it has now collapsed. You land in 3 feet of dark murky water in a pool in the middle of the romm, filled by drips and seepage from the mouldy, soot stained walls. Charred wooden beams line the area, while to the north the twisted wood and rusted iron remains of the elevator project form the shallow end of the pool. To the west is a partially blocked opening that seems to lead into a dark tunnel. The light from the hole in the ceiling and your own light sources seem to indicate that the tunnel opens up after several feet.
As soon as Rova sets foot on the flooded chamber floor the room fills with a cacophonous roar of screams and howls, though no source is apparent.
As the last of you touches down, the surface of the dark pool begins to ripple around the ruined lift and two forms, dripping and horrible, rise from the pool.
The forms, while disturbingly humanoid, are slimy, shifting masses made of something seeming to be sticky rope or cloth. They lurch jerkily toward you, struggling to maintain their horrid forms.
