Surprised by the sudden attack, Que is baffled for a moment beofre drawing her Wakizashi and steadying herself to counterattack.
Que uses a move action to draw her Wakizashi and readies an action to atack when one of the creatures is in Reach. Shoul one of the beasts come into reach before her turn, she of course doesn't ready her attack and attack immediately
Gkirkhan(HP: 27/34 AC 17/13/14: F+4, R +3, W-2, Per:-2, Init: +5)
Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Gkirkhan barely senses the blow coming, but is able to twist out of the way. He sees the other one strike Vertielle, and that decides its fate. He swiftly marches over to I-13, pulling out the warhammer as he goes.
"Hokay, TIME TO SQUASH SUM BOGS!" He roars as he brings the gift from the Professor down in a fearsome, two-handed blow, right smack into the floor.
Using Power Attack. Using a 1-handed weapon in two hands.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Damage: 1d8 + 9 ⇒ (1) + 9 = 10
dem...
Oops, sorry, initiative is bugs, Wood, Gkirkhan, Kurik, Que, Evangline, Vertielle.
At this point wood is casting, Gkirkhan missed the one on Vertielle and Kurik is up. Once Evangline is back, we'll continue. If Kurik doesn't respond by then, he's in the main room on guard.
Vertielle screams as the chitinous creature rips flesh from her side. A tear in her clothes reveals a pulsing vein pattern of black under the skin, slowly spreading- the effect of the creature's bite.
I need to know if my knowledge check is successful.
Fort 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 That'll about do. Aim just above the legs! They can't twist upwards, guard low!
The large dog Wood summoned bites down on the centipede attacking Vertielle, killing it, as Gkirkhan, in his efforts to slay the thing without harming Vertielle, misses.
The remaining centipede is now at E13. Wood's shot glances off the lid of the sarcophagus as he tries to fire past Gkirkhan and Que at the one now after Evangline.
@Vertielle: Giant centipedes attack nearly any living creatures with their poisonous jaws. They can adapt to many environments and feed voraciously on anything, even humanoids, that they can catch. Many species of giant centipedes exist, some smaller and some quite a bit larger. They are ususally found either singly or in family groups. This must be a mated pair. If this is their nest, there may be young ones around. Or, if these are of one of the larger species, these may be the young. Also, you've managed to shake the poison.
Still round two: Kurik, Evangline, Que, Vertielle.
As the creatuer moves in to attack Evangline, Que slashes at it, doing some damage, however the blow glances off it's carpace and it survives the attack.
Damn, didn't even realize that I had a threat. forgot to add in the +1 from anatomist though
bonus damage to crit:
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
I know that I don't need to roll the damage anymore, that is just for celebrating the crit ;-)
Que's blade glances off the carapace and it seems at first that the creature would survive the attack with but a dent in its carapace but then the blade slides between two segments of the creatures chitinous armor and sinks deep into the soft flesh, spilling jelly like blood as Que withdraws her blade.
I could use a rest and perhaps a bandage or two, but the poison seems to have worn down, though I'm still quite stiff. We'll see how it looks after a bit of rest, I think.
an elegant quiver full of arrows; many of the arrows and the quiver itself radiate magic
a bandolier with seven potion bottles slung on it
a potion belt with six flasks
an open box with four scrolls
four sun rods
a thin darkwood case emblazoned with the same scarab and eye image that marked the Manual of the Order of the Palatine Eye Professor Lorrimor asked you to deliver
Wood shows the scrolls to Evangeline. "Between us we can probably decipher these. I want to open the darkwood case, anyone good at traps?"
Fortunately, the case doesn't seem to be trapped, and opens easily.
Inside, you see the following: a folded wooden board, decorated with letters and numbers, a small brass triangle with a hole in the center, and four glass vials, with stylized iron casings covered in necromantic runes. Inside each vial is a small black dot, that appears to suck at the light, lending the entire vial a dark and shadowy appearance. There are six slots, but only four vials.
Vertielle's side heals immediately, the tear in her clothes the only evidence of a wound. Her white skin shows through the rend, and she quickly stitches a makeshift repair. After she's done and Que has checked for traps, she sets to deciphering the nature of the items with the enthusiasm of a schoolgirl.
@Vertielle: Items identified:
2 of the flasks are Holy Water
1 potion is Cure Light Wounds
2 potions are Lesser Restoration
1 scroll is Detect Undead
1 scroll is Hide from Undead
1 scroll is Protection from Evil
The board is not magical, the other items in the case are.
There are also 29 arrows in the quiver. 12 are silver, the rest are magical.
@Wood: the brass triangle is a spirit planchette, a magical version of the standard planchette used by those wishing to commune with the dead. The board, now that you look closer, is a standard such board, perhaps a little fancier than most.
@Wood: After a bit of study, you read the runes on the vials. They seem to be a set of Haunt Syphons.
Haunt Syphons are single use devices used to combat haunts and undead. When the user opens a vial, it draws energy from a nearby undead spirit into the vial(causing 3d6 damage). Once filled they can be thrown like a bomb, doing negative energy damage (1d6 pts of negative energy damage). These appear to be empty.
Huh. Would have thought more potions got identified. As a good friend says, "hoh vell." 3/7 potions, 2/6 flasks, and 3/4 scrolls identified... not terrible. Wood, maybe you prepare identify in the morning, if the unfurling scroll has a copy for you to learn?
Vertielle furrows her brow over the last few items. Perhaps we should return with these? I'm sure that the professor's notes may help us identify the rest, and, barring that, the temple may aid us- though temples like to KEEP artifacts you recover... even if *mutter mutter*

Not by RAW. I was actually expecting more as well. Give me an int check.
Edit: My bad, I was looking at the arrow DCs. I've really got to organize my notes better. You do ID the potions; 5 cure light & 2 lesser restorations and you realize that all of the flasks are identical, and can assume they're all holy water.
"Oh and by the way, Professor Lorrimor was certain there was some sort of anti-undead stash in a false crypt in the Restlands. I didn't believe him, but Rima here" he gestures to the halfling acolyte"says she thinks she found an old reference to such a stash. I would appreciate it if you and your friends wold check it out. If there is anything there that will help in the current situation, you have my permission to take whatever you need."
"So think we are in the clear, but we should report what was found."
"I have about 6 gold left, so I could use a loan till the inheritance money comes. We could also raid the forbidding prison for information and treasure."
