The Trial of the Beast: Schloss Caromarc 1

Half-orc
Normal:
HP: 41/71 AC 16/12/12: F+8, R +4, W +1, Per:-2, Init: +5

Rage: 4/11

Gkirkhan is 6'5" and weighs in at 287lbs.

He constantly wears his armored coat, except while sleeping. Under that he has one well-worn leather boots, rugged and patched wool pants, and a loose fitting sleeveless cotton shirt that shows off his muscled torso.

He is rather handsome and wears his long black hair in a ponytail. Said hair would be the envy of many Chelish women if it wasn't attached to a half-orc.

Female Human Ninja 3

Que is 5'5" tall.

Wood is 6' 4" and 180# and not so attractive. Think of him as President Lincoln, tall, thin and not the prettiest face in the room.

Female Half-Elf Bard (Archivist) 5/ Pathfinder Chronicler 1 (hp 49/49; AC 18/14/14; 15/15 rounds)

Thought I would clear this up now... I'm a little unclear, honestly, on what knowledges "pertain" to which types of creatures, and what the protocol is to rolling such things. When combat DOES happen, should I just roll all my knowledges like this?

knowledge checks:

Arcana 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Dungeoneering 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
Engineering 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
Geography 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
History 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Local 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Nature 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
Nobility 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Planes 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Religion 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

Should the GM just roll the appropriate check after my prompt "I search my memory for a ___"?

This is important because of my Naturalist ability.

I think it goes like this:
undead, good/evil outsiders? => Kn(religion)
non-magical monsters => Kn(nature)
unnatural things, magical monsters => Kn(arcana)?
elemental stuff => Kn(planes) this one will probably work on the good/evil outsiders as well.

I may be wrong on some of them though.

6'4" Wood (7 inches taller than average)
6'3" Evangline (9 inches taller than average ??, by Ulfen blood she's closer to average)
5'6" Vertielle (3 inches shorter than average)
5'5" Que (1 inch shorter than average human, but taller than most Tian women)
4'8" Kurik (6 inches taller than average)

That is one handy cheat sheet.... SAVED TO DESKTOP.

Male Dwarf Barbarian 1

Arcana is used for Constructs, Magical Beasts, Outsiders and Undead
Dungeoneering is used for Aberrant creatures and things that live deep undeground
Engineering is used for Constructs and Mechanical Traps
Geography is for what types of monsters live
History would be for ancient monster knowledge
Local would be for particular monsters threatening a town
Nature is for Natural Beasts and Magical Beasts
Nobility would be used to find the leaders of certain monsters
Planes would be for Outsiders
Religion would be for Outsiders and Undead

So my only confusion now is if I'm not sure what it is. Say, will you, a normal looking human dude rolls up, but he's actually a vampire. Knowledge Religion. Wait, no, he's actually a disguised Coatl. Knowledge Planes. No, turns out he's an actual human... knowledge nature? He's a historic figure, knowledge history....

I don't know any of that before I roll the check, as a player OR in character. How and when are the checks called for? Moreover, if Ninja calls for a knowledge religion, we can easily meta that its an undead of some kind. How much meta are we/am I trusted with here?

That's why we have a GM. He can tell you what you need to identify a beastie. If all else fails, jsut ask for help and we'll try to help ya the best we can.

Forgetting the alias tool for the boy.

DM Ninja/infinite

Yep..and I even made one!

Apparently climbing the hill to the VA in Oakland to get to my appointments was a bad idea. I've only been conscious for a few hours while I fight off this cold, which is kinda why I haven't posted much today.

I'll be back tomorrow, when the meds wear off. NyQuil is such fun.

DM Ninja/infinite

@group: quick question, do any of you want to try using the relationship mechanic from Jade Regent? The AP does note Kendra can be recruited and there may be other options as we advance.

@Gkirkhan: maybe next time ;)

Now we're just waiting for Kurik, and it's off to the reading of the will.

Female Human Ninja 3

I have no problem with using those mechanics, if you like to do that.

Female Assimar (with Ulfen blood) Cleric(Theologian) 4 / Monk(Spirit Master) 2

JR romance mechanics are only good if the NPC(s) is with the party for a long time.

DM Ninja/infinite
Evangline Valeria Aurora wrote:

True. That's why I wanted to know if anyone was interested, so I could plan around it.

Male Dwarf Barbarian 1

Allright so lets get to the will then

Female Half-Elf Bard (Archivist) 5/ Pathfinder Chronicler 1 (hp 49/49; AC 18/14/14; 15/15 rounds)

I don't think the pace of the AP supports the mechanic, and my character wouldn't use it. However, I could see the faction fame and prestige being used.

Female Half-Elf Bard (Archivist) 5/ Pathfinder Chronicler 1 (hp 49/49; AC 18/14/14; 15/15 rounds)

Kurik, you forgot the diplomacy or perform check if you speak.

DM Ninja/infinite

Ok, so no real interest in the relationship stuff. I'll look in to the faction rules and see how they work.

Meanwhile I'm stealing time on my daughter's computer. I'll be back online about 9:30PM est with the will reading. See you folks then.

DM Ninja/infinite

Ok, tomorrow I may not be able to post until after 9PM. Hubby has a vacation day after a 13 hr work day so we're going to relax and do family stuff.

Once I get back on-line I'll post what the results were.

Enjoy yourselves until then. Because it's time for the waste-product to hit the fan.

Female Half-Elf Bard (Archivist) 5/ Pathfinder Chronicler 1 (hp 49/49; AC 18/14/14; 15/15 rounds)

When are the cards activated and what effect do they have, or do we actually "call" upon the cards in character?

DM Ninja/infinite

In character when you want to use your individual card you can call on it as [edit] a swift action. The six group cards can only be activated at certain points in the AP. I've noted the alignment of each card next to it.

Group Cards:
The Crows [ne], The Eclipse [le], The Hidden Truth [lg], The Marriage [ln], The Survivor [ng], and The Uprising [cn]

Individual Cards:
The Avalanche [le], The Publican [cg], The Queen Mother [ln], The Inquisitor [ln], The Twin [n], and The Brass Dwarf [ln]

Effects; from the CC Player's guide:

Each card has a suit and an alignment. When playing a card you may choose to gain the effect granted by the either the card's suit or it's alignment. Any card used to provide a numerical benefit can be used to give that benefit to another character but the bonus is halved (except when used to heal the other character).

Suits:

Hammers (Str): If used before a roll is made, a hammers card grants you a +8 luck bonus on any one d20 roll. If used after a roll is made, this bonus is reduced to +4. You can also use this card to grant a bonus to another character, as long as you are in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as by distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check).

Keys (Dex): You can spend a keys card to take your turn immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You may only take a move or a standard action on this turn.

Shields (Con): You can spend a shields card on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action this turn.

Books (Int): You can spend a books card to recall a spell you have already cast or to gain another use of a special ability that is otherwise limited. This should only be used on spells and abilities possessed by your character that recharges on a daily basis.

Stars (Wis): If you feel stuck at some point in the adventure, you can spend a card of this suit and petition the GM for a hint about what to do next. If the GM feels that there is no information to be gained, the stars card is not spent.

Crowns (Cha): You may spend a crown card to reroll any one d20 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.

Alignments:

Lawful Good: You may smite evil, as the paladin ability, gaining the benefits until the start of your next turn. If you have levels in paladin greater than half your total Hit Dice, use your paladin level to determine bonus damage; otherwise, your bonus damage equals half your character level, rounded down (minimum 1).

Neutral Good: You channel positive energy that cures a creature touched of an amount of damage equal to 1d6 × your character level. This effect damages undead creatures as spells like cure light wounds.

Chaotic Good: You receive a +4 circumstance bonus on one CMB check to avoid or escape a grapple or on one Escape Artist check.

Lawful Neutral: You gain a +10 bonus on any single Sense Motive check.

True Neutral: You may gain a one-time insight into the future as the spell augury, using your character level as your caster level. Meditating on the particular action in question requires 10 minutes and does not expend material components.

Chaotic Neutral: You gain the effects of rage, as the spell, lasting a duration of 1 round + an additional round for every 3 Hit Dice you possess above the first.

Lawful Evil: You can give another creature a command as per the spell command. This command can affect undead that are normally immune to mind-affecting effects, but not other creatures that are immune to mind-affecting effects. The DC of this command is equal to 10 + your character level.

Neutral Evil: You channel negative energy that deals an amount of damage equal to 1d6 × your character level to a creature touched. This effect heals undead creatures as spells like inflict light wounds.

Chaotic Evil: You may instantly force any creature to reroll a saving throw it has just made, taking the result of the second roll, even if doing so means the check will fail.

DM Ninja/infinite

OK, here are the guidelines for researching any particular topic:

Each character may make one Knowledge check once per topic to see what they know on that subject. This is in addition to the once-only check to recognize the tomes.

Each character may also spend 8 hours a day in any of the four sites Kendra mentioned; the Professor's library, the Town Hall, the Temple or the Unfurling Scroll researching a particular subject. Each day your character does so grants them one Knowledge check for that day on that subject. In order to use any of the places other than the Professor's library, you will need to make a Diplomacy check. This can be rerolled when or if your Trust level changes. If your Trust level drops by one whole rank, you *will* have to reroll the Diplomacy check, at minuses.

Trust levels:
Hated: angry mob, torches, pitchforks...
Disliked: stuff costs more, Diplomacy checks are at minuses
Neutral: no bonuses or minuses, no effect on costs in town
Liked: bonuses on checks, discounts at shops, locals are friendly, xp reward for reaching this level
Trusted: as above, with better bonuses and discounts, free healing, xp reward
Admired: as above, bonuses and discounts increase further, can gain cohorts from the locals, xp reward

Current level: Neutral

DM Ninja/infinite

Just a quick bit of info for those, like me, who enjoy a visual aid.

The floor plan I'm using for the Lorrimor place is the one from the 'Secrets of Fochlucan College' web enhancement to Complete Adventurer.

The Professor's old room is the one labled 'Yew Master's Room', Kendra's room is the 'Master's Room' with the two side areas (a closet and sitting rom), and the second floor 'Recital Room' is the Professor's study and work room. The upstairs 'Servant's Room' is also a guest room, making four guest rooms upstairs. Pick a room and let me know who's sharing with whom. The first floor 'Guest Room' is also part of the servant's quarters.

If you don't have access to that dl, I'll try to post a link.

I think we all know Gkirkhan's preference.

All joking aside, it really doesn't matter. I figure that having a roof over his head is somewhat on the unusual side for him, so he'll take what ever's left.

@group: Minor, expensive crisis here. Our boiler/furnace died. the plumbers are coming in about an hour to replace it. For about $12,000. There goes our vacation.

Still, it's 34 and snowing out and 56 in the house, so...

I should be able to post tonight but I'm just alerting everyone, just in case.

DM Ninja/infinite

Ok, group, so it's almost midnight here and we almost have the temp in the house up to 60 degrees.

It's been fun. First thing we (or rather the poor guys doing the install) discovered was that the drain closest to the boiler was clogged beyond even the snake they brought. So, in Pittsburgh winter weather (temps outside never got over 40) they're standing in a 1/4 of water. Everytime they made noise, the cats (we have two) freaked out. They started about 4pm and finished after 10pm.

I hope this new boiler lasts as long as the old one (which came with the house). We thought it had been installed in the 70's when the house had been rewired (long before we bought it) but the plumbers said the thing was a 50's model. If Honeywell ever wants a testimonial...

So, tomorrow, back to our regularly scheduled game.

Hey wood, what book or supplement or whathaveyou is the Necronomicon in; or is it created content?

Enaris wrote:
Hey wood, what book or supplement or whathaveyou is the Necronomicon in; or is it created content?

According to HP Lovecraft, the creator of the Cthulu mythos and eldritch horror, the Necronomicon was the master book of insight into the evil monsters from other planes. Hence I assumed if I paid masterwork kit prices for the book it would give +2 to knowledge planes. It is supposedly a dreadful book and reading it could cause the reader to go insane as the knowledge contained within was so dreadful and powerful. In carrion crown I assumed it would make good background. As it is not official Pathfinder the caviat 'with DM permission' to spend money on tomes to help knowledge checks.

From Wikipedia

The Necronomicon is a fictional grimoire appearing in the stories by horror writer H. P. Lovecraft and his followers. It was first mentioned in Lovecraft's 1924 short story "The Hound",[1] written in 1922, though its purported author, the "Mad Arab" Abdul Alhazred, had been quoted a year earlier in Lovecraft's "The Nameless City".[2] Among other things, the work contains an account of the Old Ones, their history, and the means for summoning them.

Other authors such as August Derleth and Clark Ashton Smith also cited it in their works; Lovecraft approved, believing such common allusions built up "a background of evil verisimilitude." Many readers have believed it to be a real work, with booksellers and librarians receiving many requests for it; pranksters have listed it in rare book catalogues, and a student smuggled a card for it into the Yale University Library's card catalog.

I thought it was clear in game, but there's not been response from wood. I thought Vertielle, Evangline, and Que will roll- Wood will stay with Gkirkhan, but it occurs to me perhaps Vertielle, Que, and Wood should search, leaving a diplomat behind.
