The Storyteller

@Vlad, time to get some wanna be vamp killed! Tell me how far are you going, and make your percept/stealth/survival check.

@Others
The group heads to the pre-arranged inn to seek out Elise.
Elise wears a silk, form fitting choli. Soft blue and white threads entwine with the primarily gray weave of the garment, forming intricate patterns of flowers and thorned vines on a gray background. Her ankle length lehenga is similarly adorned, patterned with flowers and vines, with the hem thickly embroidered, and decorated with beads of colored glass. On occasion, from beneath her skirt peeks her matte black, soft leather knee high boots, the silver buckles running up the length of her leg keeping them reliably snug. She wears gray silk arm warmers, tied just above mid bicep with a white ribbon, that fall down her arm to drape like wide sleeves just past her wrists. Her long white hair sways behind her and a circlet of bright silver, perhaps mithril, hangs upon her head. Thrown over her shoulder is a snow white silk haversack, embroidered with gray brocade patterns of snow.

Upon seeing the party, she smiles and is quick to business ”How long? Are you setting camp there? If yes, how do I reach out to you in case I some information needs to be passed?”

Argan, as usual, is not please by the behavior of the woman. He had previously calculated her strategy about this and thought that they could not take much of her help unless they made some things clear. The rogue takes a look around to guarantee no one is eavesdropping and unfolds a small map at the table. "Here is the place where it is." He points a finger to the place on the map. "One day of travel. Our calculations say about 8 months. You'd better get used to this wonderful city for now."

"The place is strategically useful for us, so we're keeping it, and also we will need to protect it for as long as the ritual is being made." He folds the map and stores it back. "Keep an eye out, the ritual start in about three days from now, since we will need to put up some minimal defense as the seal will certainly warn who it shouldn't."

"To contact us you can either use magic or send someone over to inform us of anything. I'll set up a rookery eventually, but this takes time."

"We will need to man the place, so if you find suitable options send them to us. If they are good options give them this pass phrase, so they will be accepted, but try not to use any magic on them, cause it may fade away and put our headquarters in trouble." He handles her a piece of paper with a phrase written on it. I'm here to serve the Lord of Darkness, if he will have me.

"If you are unable to eliminate any threat but is able to point them to a trap, give them this pass phrase instead." He handles another paper, with a different phrase. The sun shines for everyone, but us! Argan waits until the woman reads it, then he proceeds. "Those with this last pass will be killed on sight, but it will be better if they think they are infiltrating the place. There will be no real subterfuges on their part, which is much better than having to wait for them to show up out of the blue."

Rumourmonger
While Kharn will collect rumors Argan will spread some others, seeking mainly to prevent the city from running into a chaos when the horn shows itself. The rumor:
- "I found out the Caer Bryar is not as hunted as they tell. There's a mighty righteous force in that forest, oh there is. A council of treants that have been protecting Talingarde for hundreds of years. When I was adventuring they told me I should stay there, because of what comes next. They seem to be preparing a large purification ritual in the middle of the forest, and any dark soul that is there is certainly going to flee when the ritual starts. We should be happy cause we're going to be safe!"

Crime Lord
Argan will absolutely meet the crime lord and see what happens with his little guild. Whatever he had, now will belong to the rogue, and although the Lord will probably be the strongest member in the guild, Argan will have in mind that killing him will show his power to the other criminals, aside from avoiding any possible retribution in the future. He will invite the others to go have some fun too.

Now the question, what does this ranger need to set up a rookery?

Vladamir had never hunted in his entire life. Of course he had participated of those mock hunting in the lands of his father, there was no danger, nothing to get in their way, just fun and lies.

Of course he had tried other forms of hunting as well, release a maid in his father land and let her run for her life, while the blood-drinking noble would run after, enjoying the ‘thrill’ of the hunt.

Maybe was this false sense of security and his newfound senses that made Vladamir believe he could do it, hunt in the wilds. Donning his armor, calling the imp companion, he ventures into the wild forest in the moonless night.

Just for fun, or to prove how immature he was, the plays about tossing a stone at the burning skeleton, which instantly fights back. Vlad has no trouble to dispatch the undead being, but he is sure Lil probably wouldn’t be happy about it.

Without even caring to be silent, the heavily armored undead walks searching for any animal that can be used to disrupt the Mitran altar, and after walking for some minutes, he founds nothing…

”Will do.” she says looking at the notes and passcodes ”What can you tell me about the place? I’ll mainly contact you using magic, but if for some reason I need to send a message carrier, I don’t want him to die at your defenses and traps.”

@Drownington
The group ventures into the Drownington. They is amazed to see, displayed in the open, shops with trinkets and symbols from other deities other than Mistra.

The place is a chaos. Crowded with temporary structures, water-logged shanties and traveller’s tents. You receive more than your share of hostile stares, as you walk by, in your newer clothes, but no one makes any move against you. yet! Mwuahahaha

Drownington is a maze of transients and cast-offs. Fights and muggings are common, you see several as you pass by. Illegal goods unthinkable to trade up on the hills are openly trafficked here. You saw in one tent, what you think that may be a human heart into a glass pot, and other not so nice things to describe.

Desperate prostitutes peddle their wares besides drunken river sailors. They almost try to take you by force.

==//==

After escaping this maze, you head for the Lord Drownington’s Manor. The only permanent structure in Drownington.

A crudely made sign in front reads “Lord Drownington’s Manor”.

You enter the place, and immediately take in the scene. It’s a large place, several tables with drunken regulars, at your left, you see a fight reaching its peak, when a huge dark skinned man, punches a fat drunken into unconscious, and keep hitting the man after he is down, no one makes any move to stop, more than that, they seem to be cheering for the big one.

At your right, you see several ‘barmaids’, half naked ‘attending’ to customers in the open. Some with more than one customer. At another corner, you see what appears to be a small market, of illegal goods, signs says : “Poisons, curses, assassinations”.

On top of that, there’s drink and a loud music. The place is filled with the worst you can get.

You see in addition, there’s a stairs, leading to what you reckon is the second floor. Two tugs are stationed at it.

Just tell him to come close to the horn and call out Kharn's name. He's probably gonna be spending a lot of time at the bottom level, and the guardians know his name, so they won't kill the guy. "Interesting..." Argan was impressed with this place. He had expected a weak and small secretive guild trying to survive against the Mitran odds, but this was quite good news. They could benefit a lot more from this network than simply killing the boss and recruiting some hands. If they learned how to use this, instead of taking over this place, they would seek out the knot to join their vile cause. It was worth the time.

He addressed the others from the knot. "Ok, listen. The situation has changed. We're gonna need more information about who runs this place to make a proper use of them. So spread around and learn something, but don't get in trouble for now." Argan will check out the market, pretending to be interested in some stuff, but actually checking how the place worked. Who were the messengers, who was addressed to, who gave orders and received commissions, and who was just a thug.

Kharn does nod at Argan's logic. "I'll find out more about the big guy then." Fairly interested in the fight Kharn will walk up to someone not currently cheering on the big dark skinned man, and talk to them. Nodding over at the fight Kharn will ask "Who's the big guy bashing on the fat drunk, and why?"

@Zoé

It has been some months you are working with the Cardinal, but never once you felt as if you belonged in his plans. The only thing you know are scraps from rumors you hear. Adrastus is not always present, neither is Tiadora. Sometimes, you are alone with the slaves for weeks, before seeing any of them.

You had just left your private studio, after meditating and praying to the Dark Prince when Tiadora call you. ”The master commands you to appear before him.” She leads you into a private study; a beautifully appointed office richly decorated with dark wood and sumptuous brocade tapestry. Sitting in a leather high-backed chair is a devilishly handsome fellow who smiles as you enter.

“I have brought you here for a reason Zoé. You asked me many times to use you in our god’s plan.”

“As you know, once the Prince of Nessus was rightly revered alongside the other great powers. Now, the king of Talingarde has become a puppet to Mitran fanatics who wish to destroy any religion that does not bow to their insipid sun god.”

“For their blasphemy, I am going to burn Talingarde to the ground and from the ashes I will build a new nation that knows its rightful master. I’ve already started, but I cannot do this alone. I seek servants worthy of our Infernal Father’s majesty. Have I found it in you?”

He rises and his eyes flash with hellfire and divine purpose. “Swear loyalty to me! Serve me well in this holy endeavor and I will raise you up in the eyes of gods and men. I will make you princess of the new Talingarde. Today, swear fealty to me and to Asmodeus.”

“Put aside forgiveness and I shall give you vengeance. Put aside mercy and be made powerful. Put aside peace and become my harbinger of war. What say you?”

The ‘market’ you soon discover isn’t something as you are used to. It has just few items in display, it works per-request. What can you request? About anything; poisons to illegal goods, slaves or un-usual items.

A couple of things you notice however: Small errands and messages seem to be delivered to the barkeeper. From time to time, instead of taking it, he sends the messenger to the second floor, presumably to the boss.

@Argan
The man you approached seems offended by your question “Do I look a servant? Do I look like your personal guide? No? Then stop treating me like one before I spill your entrails.”

Life at the Cardinal's manor had been slow for Zoé, even tedious as she waited for find some purpose in her life once more; that having been said, the alternative was not worth considering... bored was better than dead.

When Tiadora finally called on her, Zoé remained poised and graceful when she responded "Of course Tiadora, I'm at the Cardinal's service." Though a measured response, Zoé was secretly brimming with anticipation. Maybe this is my chance? I've been hemmed up here for too long.

Entering the office of the Cardinal, Zoé made sure to curtsy in a manner that respected his position and authority; he was a Cardinal in the hierarchy of their infernal church, whereas Zoé was merely a Priestess of somewhat novice station. "Your grace."

Listening intently to his words, Zoé fought back the exhilaration she was experiencing, again trying to remain ostensibly controlled. Finally cracking a most wicked smile, Zoé responds with sultry excitement at finally being called upon "Of course your Grace, I live only to serve our infernal Prince of Darkness. Whatever of me that you would have, I give freely and willingly."

Kharn feels the innate urge to smash this pathetic little warrior down into the dirt and make him beg for Khanr's forgiveness, but Kharn mentally stepped back and considered the larger picture for Lil's sake. There was no reason to start up a bar fight right now when Kharn could simply ask the bartender and not endanger Lil. Walking away from the idiot behind him Kharn goes over to the bartender and talks to him instead.

"Hey, you seem like an intelligent person who knows a lot about the people here, so I thought I'd make sure to know who not to mess with. Who the large guy beating up on the fat guy?"

Kharn will make it seem like he doesn't consider the guy a servant, but a valuable knowledge dealer.

@Zoé

Cardinal Thorn smiles. “Excellent. Let us make it official. Signing in blood is traditional.”

He brings out a quill, a silver ritual knife and two copies of a contract written on some unidentifiable leather (flayed lemure skin) and written in dark red ink (powdered garnet mixed with animal blood) – the Pact of Thorns

The contract reads:

Behold on this day oathday, 13 of Arodus in the eighth age of this world a perpetual Compact is made between Cardinal Adrastus Thorn (hereafter the Master) and those who would be bound to him as his acolytes (hereafter the Bound). Both the Master and the Bound shall hold fast and true to this Compact through all trial and tribulation. By blood and soul the Bound commit to the Compact and swear that it shall never be undone. The Bound shall know and understand the Four Loyalties.

The First Loyalty is to their patron and god – mighty Asmodeus, first among the fallen, prince of the nine hells, our father below. They shall do all that can be done to further his worship and his glory.

The Second Loyalty is to their master – He who is called the Cardinal Adrastus Thorn, High Priest of Asmodeus in Talingarde. They shall do the Master no harm and obey his every commandment as long as those commandments do not clash with their First Loyalty.

The Third Loyalty is to their companions – the other Bound who serve alongside them. The Bound shall deal with each other fairly and honorably as long as doing so does not clash with their first or second loyalties. All treasure, wealth and reward garnered in their exploits will be equally shared with all of the Bound who aided in its acquisition.

The Fourth Loyalty is to themselves – for Asmodeus is the Lord of Ambition and all who serve him should strive to become great and powerful in his service as long as doing so does not clash with their first, second or third loyalties. By their weakness, ye shall know the unworthy.

The Bound swear that they cleave to and uphold the Four Loyalties even in the face of death and damnation.

The Master swears that as long as the Four Loyalties are upheld, he shall reward the Bound as they deserve for their deeds.
Thus it is written, and thus it shall be.

We being of sound mind and free will do so swear and let they who violates this Compact know all the wrath of Hell unending.
Signed,

Approaching the Cardinal's desk eagerly, Zoé turns the document around to face her. Picking it up, she reads the document over quickly but succinctly; her training was such that she could scan legal documents quickly and ascertain their meaning. Her eyes darting up from the parchment, she grins lightly and adds "Seems a fairly standard contract for this sort of thing."

Setting the document down, Zoé picks up the ceremonial knife in her right hand. Admiring the knife for a brief moment, Zoé suddenly makes a small incision on her left hand with little hesitation. After producing enough blood to sign the document, she leans over the desk and scrawls her name onto the parchment; the calligraphy of trained her hand appears both grace and clear.

You reckon a few gold pieces are enough, since the information shouldn’t be anything that valuable. The beer you just drank, unlike the last one, at the inn, is sour and cheap, not worth of even be called a drink. As you finish, the man pours more in your mug and starts with a rotten breath ”Ain’t no sure why he be beating that poor sod, ain’t don’t ‘are ‘ither. Big fella ove’ ‘dere name Jonas ‘omething, forgot the rest, but we all call him lil’ Jonny. Rubal Thraam ‘ight arm, or left. Depends where ye’re lookin.”

@Argan

Questioning about the boss raises some eyebrows, but nothing some coins can’t solve. Clearly, there’s no loyalty among thieves. You learn some interesting facts however. Everyone seems to have a different opinion about the man. His name? Rubal Thraam, Bald, scarred, mean and possibly the world’s most creative wielder of profanity, Rubal was once a captain inthe Duke’s garrison until some trouble stirred up and he left the military duty. Not long after, he took over the manor, and has been running things since them.

What can the man do? If you believe all the locals he is a magician, a thug, an assassin, a priest, a sorcerer, kidnapper, and all sorts of other rumors. It does not take much to learn the man takes time and effort to spread those rumors.

@Vlad

You begin you way back, this time trying to be discreet, but lost on your own thoughts you start to whistle, which is mostly likely what warned every wild life of your coming. One thing for sure, you’ve been walking now for longer than you had when you left the horn, and the place is nowhere in sight.

Argan finds it very funny to exist such a minion in this neighborhood. It reminds him of his early days as a crime lord. Of course, he wasn't quite good at the time, but that was Talingarde's fault, and he was much mightier now.

We're not in full strength, without Seth and Vlad, but we can still take them all, I trust. Maybe we will be able to keep them in the network, and use it in our favor, gathering minions and so forth. Kharn has a crazed smile on his face as he anticipates the up and coming conflict. He flexes his fingers as he gets ready to start tearing this guy apart with his bare hands. Kharn still seethed with rage at the thug who had disrespected him before, and it looks like lil'Jonny would have to pay the price for that.

Argan just surveys the scene. While Kharn causes a distraction he is free to analyze everyone around, specially if any funny guy would try to get involved in the fight. If anyone seems to be specially inclined to join the fray, Argan will approach him from behind to wait for the proper moment to kill.

The Storyteller

The crowd gets silent at Kharn challenge.
Lil Jonny, instead just smiles and motions to the others remove the fatty from the ring, while he walks back some feet’s, to give Kharn space.

Kharn Ini: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Jonny Ini: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11

Kharn, you are up. I'll not set up a map. Consider you are 10ft from the man.

Kharn rushes forward to give the crowd a show less trying to punch Lil Jonny than tear him apart with his bare hands. He reaches forward attempting to claw off a piece of this hot shot.

Free action rage, then charge, and power attack.

AC is 15 until next turn. HP 122/122; 19/20 rounds of rage left.

The Storyteller

The man had not been prepared to meet such ferocious attack from the newcomer. Hound claws dig deep in the man torso, blood splattering everywhere.
”He cheats!” Lil Jonny yells to everyone else in the room, looking at the blood and his injuries ”Kill him!” he yells again attacking Hound.

The man attack Hound with two powerful punches, that don't offer any oppening. Lil Jonny is has made his fist into his weapons.

Everywhere else, you hear chairs falling, yelling and weapons being drawn.
You guys are up. Map updated, check it.

Argan pretends to be just another one among the crowd, influencing them not to do anything just yet. He calls out in return to the man's order, undermining his position and his moral, whoever he thinks he is. Argan kinda mocks the man, making fun of his complaint. "You were beating a man half your size, loser! You're the cheater here! Now stop being such a pussy and fight back!"

Kharn laughs as Lil Jonny's fists hit his chest. Kharn had taken swords and axes that had done more damage than those paltry fists. Kharn also laughs as Jonny tries to call foul play.

"When are their rules in a fight you idiot? Next time make sure to say fists only if you want it that way, even though you won't get a next time fool. Now prepare to be torn apart you weakling!"

Kharn slashes forward with his fists ready to tear apart the fool for daring to try and call him a cheater. His hands outstretched to welcome Lil Jonny to the land of the dead.

Claw 1 w/Pa w/Ra: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

I'm assuming that you didn't account for Kharn's DR in the damage rolls, but if I'm wrong then take off an additional 6 hp. AC is 15 until next turn 117/122 HP 18/20 Rounds of Rage.

The Storyteller

What had started with a bar fight, soon turned into something nastier.
Without giving pause, Kharn ignoring the yells from the crowd, lashes at the big man in front of him, claws ripping skin, blood flowing freely. Lil Jonny still with that surprise stare on his face, falls in the pool of his own blood.

Meanwhile Argan influence everyone around him into tumultuous brawn, and Lilpinny only laughs and enjoys the madness around.

The Lordling of Drowninton finally appears. Bald, scarred, mean and possibly the world’s most creative wielder of profanity tries to control the mob, but with some cleaver words, Argan manages to turn everyone against the man.

The mob would have skinned the man alive, if weren’t for Lilpinny, having more fun than usual and unleashing a fireball spell killing most of the involved, the lordling included.

Then, it didn’t take much until Argan reaped off the rest into his wing.

Sense Motive 41... to paraphrase the narrator from The Grinch That Stole Christmas, Zoé can't touch that with a thirty-nine and a half foot pole.

Glancing back at the Baron as she casually inspects the many books in his Library, Zoé flashes an alluring smile and responds "Making waves in Farholde are they? Mayhaps not my style, but there may be purpose whatever has happened."

Sense Motive, futile as it is: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

Turning to face her host, Zoé takes a sip of wine before placing the glass down and plainly adding "I should join them without delay, that is after, all why I am here."

Holy Asmodeus!

Argan doesn't even activate his Clarion Call to speak with the remaining folks, since there was no need for it right now. "Alright, folks, listen up! I'm the new boss around here, and if you wanna know why, I'll tell you. It's because we have something bigger, and that's an opportunity you're gonna enjoy, to stop being such losers and actually earn some good coin that the Mitrans would never allow you to. If you wanna join, meet me upstairs. If you just wanna know more, and is not interested in joining us, I suggest you continue with your daily chores, and don't bother me." He motions his head to Kharn and Lil to follow, grabs the deceased leader by the foot and drags him towards the staircase. He brings the body so Lil could have some fun, and of course so they could search it for any keys to any loot. If the guards are still alive, he orders them to control the incoming crowd. "Send them up, one at a time. If you know any of them to be a spy from the surface authorities, give me word of it."

Argan, Kharn and Lil will inspect any recruits, asking throughout question and checking what they are capable of before offering the chance to join in an organization. He does not add where is it located, since they do not need to know that now, now what are they gonna do. He just tells them it's certainly better and more promising than the life they are living right now.

Kharn pats Lil on the head as she giggles. Kharn still felt great after that fight and the fireball while unexpected was at least pretty to see.

"That was fun all of us should do this again sometime."

Kharn then follows Argan to the interviews trying to keep an eye on any who seem to still have their old loyalties to the old lord.

The Storyteller

Surprisingly, the coup doesn’t rise too much of a fuss in the place, most likely because everyone expected that to happen, sooner rather than later.
The day’s activities dies, as the customers scraps the rest to their burned lives and scamper out of the bar, while few others decide to join the new management.

Quickly going through the late lordling papers, there’s barely a record of the man’s activities, and what you find in most of the cases, is about the whores, young indebted woman from Farhold, Husband off to die in the war.

Not so much time later, one of the ‘guards’ visible afraid comes to delivers some news.
”Ain’t no one me knows.” the man says ”The pretty one with silver hair, frightening green eye, the other one, possessing long raven colored hair, dark blue eyes and a pale alabaster skin tone.”

The Storyteller

@Zoé

Not some much after, pleasantries apart, Tiadora teleports you again.

A crudely made sign in front reads “Lord Drownington’s Manor”.
You enter the place, and immediately take in the scene. It’s a large place, several tables turned with drunken regulars, at your left, you see a fight ring blood everywhere, and several dead bodies.
At your right, you see several ‘barmaids’, half naked gathered in one single corner, trembling in fear.. At another corner, you see what appears to be a small market, of illegal goods, signs says : “Poisons, curses, assassinations”.
On top of that, there’s a huge black burned spot where several bodies were pilled against each other. Somehow, it seems a huge explosion killed most of them.
You see in addition, there’s a stairs; leading to what you reckon is the second floor. Two tugs are stationed at it.

Before you can do anything, one of the thugs practically flees from you, climbing the stairs.

Glancing about the room disapprovingly, Zoé shakes her head "Such a dive; it could surely use a woman's touch I suspect." Watching as the second thug flies up the stairs, Zoé gently laughs and waves her hand as though shooing away a fly "Run dear boy, run!"

Stepping beside Tiadora and leaning closer, Zoé speaks in more hushed tone in a tongue that commoners here wouldn't understand

Infernal:
"The Ninth Knot is here? The Baron was perhaps a little understated when he said there was a minor disturbance in Drownington."

Barbarian (Invulnerable Rager) 6 Furious Guardian 1 | HP 101/118 (119/136 R) | AC 17 (17 raging); Touch AC 13 (11 raging); FF 14 (14 raging) | F +12 (15 R); Ref +5; W +4 (6 R) | +3 Init | Perc +12 | Sense Motive +12 Human DR 3/- Doubled vs. Non-Lethal | CMB+10 (12 R) | CMD 23 (25 R) | Resist Cold 1

Kharn seems a bit annoyed at the guard disturbing them while they were working, but then shrugs it off since not that much was happening up here anyways. "Fine, fine just go back down and we'll be down in a moment."

Kharn then makes sure his sword is ready, stretches a bit to limber up after standing for so long, and goes down to the common room to see what's up. Seeing the two people the guard was talking about, and seeing that one of them was Tiadora Kharn waves before walking over. "Nice to see you again here Tiadora. Just got done making a few managerial changes as you can see so don't mind the mess." Smiling Kharn motions his hand over at all the blackened corpses lying over in the corner, and then turns his attention back to the conversation to get down to business. "So why have you and your friend decided to grace us this day?"

On his way down Argan pats the man on the shoulder, complimenting him for the good job he's doing.

Argan is emotionless as usual when talking to Tiadora. "Indeed, it's too soon, but it's good you're here. Don't disappear just yet." He motions then to go upstairs, where they would have more of a private conversation.

Up there, he tells them to be careful with the words, and changes to Infernal, since he "I haven't had this place checked yet, since we just got here, but I don't think the Mitrans care much. We've found what we were seeking, but the bad news is, according to our knowledge it will take some time to actually get it. Seven and a half months when we start, to be more precise. We're hiring some whores and cleaners to have everything ready before we start to call out attention with our advertising. We heard it's gonna be to die for." Of course, he uses some metaphors to talk about what they are really doing.

Glancing about the room, Zoé smirks slightly as she rests her eyes on Kharn "Managerial changes? Well met, love what you've done with place."

As Argan makes his way down a few short moments later, Zoé nods her head while giving the most perfunctory of curtsies "Greetings, Zoé Harman at your service." After the two men usher Tiadora and herself upstairs, she continues in the infernal tongue "The Cardinal has sent me to bolster your numbers, and aid you in any manner I can." Leaning up against a nearby desk, Zoé runs a hand through her hair and adds plainly yet confidently "I have extensive skills sets for operations such as these, though I suspect the 9th Knot will appreciate my healing abilities above all else."
