Shieara Enric |
"Hum...guess I'll be some of th' bait then," Shieara remarks as Kleines and Lander each take up positions on opposite sides of the bridge. Drawing her longspear she moves up closer to the bridge, ready to strike as the birds approach.
GM Bret |
With so much movement near the bridge, the birds territorial instincts kick in and they give a loud “SQUAAAWK!!”
Landers states the obvious. “They’re coming right for us!”
Damiar: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Garif: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Kleines: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Nico: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Phinellippa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Rees: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Shieara: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Verrix: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 14
Lander: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Blue bird: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Red bird: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Red moves to about half way across the bridge. It seems to be lining up for a charge!

Shieara Enric |
Though Kleines and Lander lie in wait on either side of the bridge, Shieara grips her longspear tightly and readies to strike at any of the birds that might make it across the bridge and to her without being knocked out.
Shieara will try to strike to do non-lethal damage should either of the birds get within reach of her longspear.
Attack vs. Bird (Longspear; Non-Lethal): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 3 - 4 = 6
Damage (Non-Lethal): 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
GM Bret |
Shieara you may want to give me an AoO as well since you have Combat Reflexes and a longspear.
Shieara gets ready for the birds to attack.

nonlethal damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
nonlethal damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
GM Bret |
Blue bird charges Shieara!
Shieara thrusts with her readied spear and misses!
Unfortunately the path also took it within reach of Kleines glaive, which came down hard and then was swung around to hit a second time. The bird skids to a stop at Shieara’s feet, dropped unconscious!
Lander let’s out a “Wow!” at seeing this.
Round 1:

Blue Bird (unconscious, hurt 16 NL)
Garif
Verrix

Damiar
Rees
Lander
Phinellippa
I will move Lander later. He is at the bottom of the initiative anyways and this allows people a chance to react.
Garif Stonetoe |
Garif lays a firm hand on Nico’s shoulder when the first bird charges, as he can sense the coiled, nervous energy in the great cat as Nico prepares to spring. When the axe beak falls, Garif continues to hold Nico, saying quietly, ”Wait, wait...“
Delay for now.
Rees Kovu |
Rees, realizing belatedly that firing an arrow into the bird is probably not the best way to keep it alive, slings his bow and draws a wooden cudgel instead.
Verrix the Pathfinder |
Verrix delays, allowing Lander to get in on the action.
After Lander does whatever he does, Verrix will try to hit the bird nonlethally with his warhammer.
Includes -4 for attacking nonlethally. This is a 2-handed attack.
Warhammer attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
Nonlethal damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
GM Bret |
Just to make sure people were aware, I put a marker on the bird that is unconscious.
Rees switches weapons.
Garif makes sure that Nico doesn’t pounce on the tasty treat, waiting to see how things go before acting.
Lander moves out on to the bridge and waits for the bird to approach.
I suspect that Verrix was thinking the blue bird was active. I assume he doesn’t want to smash an already down bird. Let me know what you do want to do.

Damiar sings to inspire courage!
+1 to hit and damage
Garif Stonetoe |
Garif pats Nico’s flank and together the two move a bit closer to the bridge. The dwarf is careful to keep his cat friend from getting too close to the unconscious bird, and keeps an eye on the other one as well.
Move action to get a bit closer, nothing else this round.
GM Bret |
Damiar starts a rousing song.
Garif and Nico edge closer to Nico’s dinner the bridge.
Red bird charges Lander!
Lander tries to hit it as it gets in range, but swings a little too early!
Aldori dueling sword, non-lethal, inspire courage: 1d20 + 3 - 4 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 3 - 4 + 1 = 9
non-lethal damage, inspire courage: 1d8 ⇒ 6
Verrix then swings but pulls his blow a bit too much and misses the fowl runner!
The bird then bites at Lander! “Snap!”
Bite, charge: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 2 = 8
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
Trip if hit: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16
Evidently Lander is very lucky!

Aid another, to aid Lander's attack.
Aid Another Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
GM Bret |
Verrix attacks, causing the bird to duck back.
Seeing an opening, Lander attacks the bird! Unfortunately the bird is able to evade his blow.
Aldori Dueling Sword, non lethal, inspire courage, Aid another: 1d20 + 3 - 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 4 + 1 + 2 = 10
Non-Lethal Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2
Frowning, he admits “I’ve not practiced using the sword this way.”

Garif Stonetoe |
Still keeping Nico by his side, Garif raises one hand, rubbing his thick fingers together until a small spark appears between them! He tosses the spark at the remaining bird, and the little mote of light erupts in a bright flash in front of the creature's large eyes!
"Maybe if it can't see so well, it won't kill Lander," he mutters quietly to Nico. "Which I guess is a good thing."
Cast flare at red bird. DC 14 Fort save or it's dazzled for 1 minute (-1 to attack rolls and sight-based Perception checks).
GM Bret |
Garif’s magic is well timed! The flash goes off just as the bird looks in his direction!
Fort: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

"Yeah don't worry, most of th' rest of us ain't used t' usin' our weapons like this either," Shieara calls out as she moves up to Lander and Verrix. She attempts to clonk the remaining bird over the head with her longspear.
Attack vs. Red (Longspear; IC, Nonlethal): 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 4
Damage (Nonlethal): 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 4 + 1 = 10
"See what I mean?"
Kleines Johann |
"Every battle is a learning opportunity."
Kleines moves up next to Lander and lashes out with a swift elbow.
Improved unarmed strike, IC: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 1 = 9
nonlethal damage, IC: 1d3 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6
"Hm. This one is quicker than its mate."
Phinellippa Dioptrice |
"You're all in my way!" The gnome hops up and down, then moves around to the other side of the bridge. Double move!
GM Bret |
Shieara and Kleines take their turns swinging at the bird. Unfortunately the bird dodges both attacks!
Phinellippa decides she is in the wrong place and runs over next to Verrix.

Blue Bird (unconscious, hurt 16 NL)
Garif Stonetoe |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
”As a student of nature - though a specialist in rocks - I can tell you, Kleines, that red things are faster than blue things,“ Garif observes. ”You’ll note it in many cases, but particularly when it comes to carts and wagons. Drivers of red carts always seem to be racing down the road, or having a chat with the authorities about driving too fast.“
Rees Kovu |
Rees moves forward, but hesitates at the congestion already present on the bridge. With a slight frown and a quick shake of his head, he pauses and waits to see what transpires. Single move to the edge of the bridge. Can't edit the map right now.
GM Bret |
Red Bird takes a bite out of Lander! Chomp!
Bite: 1d20 + 3 - 1 ⇒ (17) + 3 - 1 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
“Ow! That hurt!”
Round 3:

Phinellippa
Blue Bird (unconscious, hurt 16 NL)
Garif Stonetoe |
Keeping one hand firmly in the fur at the scruff of Nico’s neck, Garif drags the panther past the unconscious bird, drawing a wand with his free hand as he moves. Passing Damiar, he says, “”Sorry, don’t mean to get in your way.“. Once he’s close to Lander, he taps the stripling lord with the wand, hoping to keep the obnoxious fellow from being killed while his clever plan is put into action.
Move action to get into position, drawing CLW wand while moving. Standard action to use wand on Lander.
CLW : 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Kleines Johann |
"Quick, strike before it can regain its defensive position!"
Improved unarmed strike, IC: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 1 = 15
nonlethal damage, IC: 1d3 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 4 + 1 = 7
GM Bret |
Garif completely heals Lander's injury.
You can give me a heal check if you want to know how badly hurt he was.
Lander says a quick "Thank you! as he feels the spell take effect. He does not allow his attention to wander from the bird in front of him.
Kleines hits with his fist.
Lander swings, once again trying to hit a non-vital area. He just barely misses.
Aldori dueling sword, IC, NL: 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 13
Non-lethal: 1d8 ⇒ 4

"Stupid dang bird, hold still!" Shieara exclaims as she tries once more to boop Red on the head with her longspear.
Attack vs. Red (Longspear; IC, Nonlethal): 1d20 + 3 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 - 4 = 3
Damage (Nonlethal): 1d8 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 4 + 1 = 6
Phinellippa Dioptrice |
Dang it, I apparently didn't prepare color spray when I last picked spells for the day. Since blinding ray probably won't do much with it already dazzled, there is not a whole lot I can do to it that's non-lethal.
Phinellippa pulls out her wand of magic missile, just in case things start looking bad.
GM Bret |
Provide flanking? Aid another? Blind is much more severe than dazzled.
GM Bret |
The bird dodges Shieara’s spear thrust.
Phinellippa pulls out a wand and waits.
Round 3:
Red Bird Dazzled, -1 Attack and Perception
Shieara
Kleines
Garif
Nico
Verrix
Damiar

Phinellippa
Blue Bird (unconscious, hurt 16 NL)
Verrix the Pathfinder |
Verrix moves into a flanking position on the bird opposite Lander -- drawing an opportunity attack -- and then again swings his hammer in a manner designed to distract the bird.
Aid another attack to aid Lander. If successful, he'll get a net +4: +2 from the flank, +2 from the aid another.
Aid another: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
...oops...
GM Bret |
Verrix moves into flanking position and takes a swing at the remaining bird.
Round 3:
Red Bird Dazzled, -1 Attack and Perception

Kleines
Garif
Nico
Verrix
Damiar
Rees

Phinellippa
Blue Bird (unconscious, hurt 16 NL)
Rees Kovu |
"Excuse me," murmurs Rees politely as he wedges between Phinellippa and the remaining bird. Pausing a moment to wish that it wore a human visage instead of a dumb animal's, he raises his club and brings it down with finality upon the creature's skull, aiming to disable it without doing any serious harm.
Boop (non-lethal): 1d20 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (16) + 3 - 4 = 15
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
GM Bret |
Rees manages to hit the bird with his club.
Damiar then cracks it with her whip, in spite of all the people around it providing cover.
With it’s mate down and having been hit hard twice, the bird tries to flee!
Lander takes his attack of opportunity.
Aldori Dueling Sword, NL, IC, flank: 1d20 + 3 - 4 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 - 4 + 1 + 2 = 15
Non-lethal damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
He manages to knock the bird out!
“Got it!” he excitedly shouts.
Combat over
Kleines Johann |
"Nicely done! Your plan seems to have worked quite well."
Shieara Enric |
"Hey, quick moves there," Shieara remarks, grinning at Lander as she leans against her longspear. "Good job! What's next?"
GM Bret |
Lander looks towards the two downed axe beaks, then towards Rees and Garif. “What do we need to do in order to safely move the birds?”
Heal check to just check on the physical condition of the two birds. It is obvious (no check required) that they each took some damage but neither is bleeding out.
Animal Handling for how to best move the birds. Knowledge Geography or Nature to know of a good site.
None of this is required by the scenario, I will just use the rolls to fluff the moving of the birds. They did not anticipate someone wanting to relocate the birds for some reason. :)
Phinellippa Dioptrice |
Knowledge (nature): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20
Phinellippa goes into a long dry spiel about their preferred habitats.
Garif Stonetoe |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |
"Oh, well done indeed, everyone!" Garif exclaims, giving Lander an awkward bro-punch on the shoulder. "An excellent plan, well-executed by a skilled team. We should suggest such an approach to the Society!"
He then turns his attention to the birds, deftly evaluating their condition, then pondering how best to transport such unwieldy feathered beasts. Like I've seen folk grab a chicken, I guess? Pinning their wings to their sides. But that's just to keep the chicken from flapping like mad, and these giant, unconscious murder-chickens won't be flapping much...
Heal: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
Funnily enough, we've just adopted four chickens at my house, who live in a coop in the back yard, and I've now become quite adept at picking them up and moving them when needed. Anyone want some nice fresh eggs?
Rees Kovu |
Sign me up, Garif!
Heal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
Handle Animal: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Rees recognizes that the giant birds are much closer in structure to pheasants than chickens, and quietly suggests an approach appropriate to their obviously-pheasant-like arrangement. Partway through his spiel, however, he realizes that he was completely mistaken and the birds only resemble giant pheasants because of their awkward unconscious positions.
GM Bret |
Garif is able to quickly determine that neither bird is seriously injured. He expects if Shieara were willing to use her divine channel once the birds have been relocated, they would likely wake after a single use. He would like to see them woken before leaving them, it isn’t just Nico that would consider the helpless birds a delicious snack!
The advantage of Shieara doing it is that can be done at a distance.
Garif and Rees have a short discussion about how to transport them. They both agree they want the beak and both clawed feet tied in case the birds wake. Garif expects you have over two hours before they will naturally wake.
Phinellippa comes up with some likely locations for a new nest.
When you find the current nest, there are two eggs in it.
Lander sees them and asks “Would it be alright if I kept one of them?” The young lad is fascinated by the eggs. “I’m sure that I could convince my mother to hire an animal trainer that would help me care for, train and raise the chick.”
He seems very earnest, and you have every reason to expect his mother would greatly prefer him spending his time on that rather than the Aldori sword lessons.
I will need a decision on if you allow him to keep an egg. If you want to do an Appraise roll, you can estimate what each egg is worth.
Rees Kovu |
Appraise: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10
Rees, having little experience in the wide world of commerce, can't see why anyone would pay money for the eggs, and merely shrugs. Glancing over to Garif, he raises one eyebrow slightly, as if to say, well, what do you think, Dwarven Pathfinder and temporary traveling companion? Should we allow him to take the egg from its parents, perhaps require some assurances that he won't hire one of those traditional 'trainers', and possibly come back and check on him periodically — though of course we couldn't very well take the creature away and free it once the egg has hatched. He could certainly get up to worse...
