Sense Motive: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (10) - 2 = 8
Confused *and* clumsy? Poor guy, sounds like a rough way to go through life.
DM Oladon |
"Yep! Named the town after themselves, way back when it all started up here. I can give you directions to their old holdings, if you'd like," he offers genially. A moment later his face clouds over, and he holds up a hand to his mouth as if realizing what he's said. "Please don't tell anyone it was me, though... the mayor has strict orders against us locals searching for Thalia, in hopes that whoever took her won't hurt the poor girl. I don't know if I could live with myself if I were the cause of her being hurt, or worse!"
Iovo Apastron |
Iovo doesn’t hesitate. She quickly tells Demrick “We are new in town and interested in history. I heard somewhere there was an old building that used to be the estate of the founding family.”
“Could you please give us directions to the Sauer estate?”
It is clear that she knows exactly what she is doing here, giving Demrick a convenient fiction if he is ever asked about how the group found the place.
Garif Stonetoe |

Garif's face scrunches up a bit in thought and he says quietly to Kleines, "I know the mayor is concerned the kidnappers will harm his daughter, but he almost seems to be making too much effort to be sure no one could possibly think he's helping."
DM Oladon |
Demrick frowns thoughtfully. "I'm not sure what you're saying," he replies, matching the dwarf's volume. "You can't really blame him, can you? She's his only daughter, and if the kidnappers caught wind that he was going against their orders..."
The halfling seems to be growing increasingly uncomfortable in your presence, glancing around occasionally as if afraid of being seen with the Pathfinders. He does provide clear directions to the Sauer estate, but seems ready for the party to be gone.
Iovo Apastron |
As soon as she gets the directions, Iovo starts off down the path. After going a few yards, she looks back to the rest of you and calls out "Time to go!"

Damiar raises an eyebrow. “Alrighty then. Thank you very much, Demrick!” She turns to the rest of the party. “I think we better catch up with Iovo before she leaves us behind!”
♩We’re off to the Sauer estate
I hear that it is really great
Okay, maybe I spoke too soon
But I kind of like crumbling ruins...
So here we go adventuring from door to door
Here we go looking for things to explore
Lost maids and mysteries too
And then weird hyjinks ensue
Oh, what is a Pathfinder to do
Oh, what is a Pathfinder to do? ♩
Kleines Johann |
As they walk off, Kleines responds to Garif. "It did seem odd, yes. But then, he doesn't know us. Perhaps he thought we were not worth the risk?"
DM Oladon |
Following the halfling's directions, the group makes its way out of town and through the countryside, which is filled with old estates and massive vineyards. Eventually, they pass into a barren stretch of land which contrasts sharply with the surrounding fields of well-tended grapevines.
At the center of the waste, at the end of an ill-kept path, sits a large stone villa in the old Chelish style that has partially collapsed as the result of fires long-since extinguished. Rotted timbers and soot flank scorched bone-white walls, and collapsed piles of blackened wood are all that remain of additions to the north and south ends of the main hall. Rain-slicked bare earth extends approximately three hundred feet away from the house in all directions.
What's the plan?

"All right, CoCo, you're up. Why don't you get the aerial view, see if there's any activity?"
The Amazing CoCo |
The Amazing Coco swoops into action, flying over the villa and trying to look as much like a normal raven as possible, albeit one singing her own theme song.
Perception checks, if appropriate.

Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Iovo Apastron |
Looking at the house, Iovo says “This looks like where things get dangerous!”
She then pulls out a stick and waves it around.
UMD, Mage Armor: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 “আমাকে রক্ষা কর!” Fail.
UMD, Mage Armor: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 “আমাকে রক্ষা কর!” Success!.
The first time she does it, nothing happens. The second time, the end of the stick glows and she touches it to herself.
“Right! That seems to have worked!”
DM Oladon |
From her aerial view, Coco spots signs of recent passage in the muddy ground, as well as a slight dip that stands out as unusual -- though she isn't quite able to determine why. Marked on map with burnt orange box.
Iovo Apastron |
On hearing CoCo's report, Iovo says "If there is something right in front, perhaps we shouldn't come in from the front?"
Pointing, she asks "How about if we came in from the north? With all that debris, there may not be a good line of sight. The south also has a lot of debris."
Kleines Johann |
"That sounds wise. Let's go north." Kleines begins to walk around to the north side of the building, trying and failing to be quiet as he goes.
Iovo Apastron |
Iovo follows Kleines, trying to keep an eye out for any sentries that might be watching from the ruins.
Phinellippa Dioptrice |
”Good work, CoCo! Yes, let’s move in from the North.”
Phinellippa pulls out a wand similar to Iovo’s and uses it on herself.
Kleines Johann |
Kleines draws his glaive as he moves. He'll wait for the party to move into position before he approaches the building too closely.
Garif Stonetoe |
Garif and Nico move along with the group. Garif tries to avoid straying too close to the building, fighting his curiousity about what sort of stone was used in the construction.
DM Oladon |
But wait! <cue gasp>

Just as the group begins to edge around the side of the burnt-out villa, everyone but Iovo spots a rough-looking gentleman (thoroughly armed, but somewhat unshaven) hiding behind a pile of rubble ahead... and he appears to be drawing his bow and lining up a shot!
Damiar, Iovo, and Phinellippa, feel free to move your tokens up to the rest of the group, or leave them as-is if you were intentionally staying behind.
Damiar and Garif to start the surprise round!
Iovo Apastron |
Moved.
Damiar Apastron |
I cannot move forward because Google drawings don’t work well with mobile. Can someone else move me forward?
“There are two people at the front doors and one person sneaking around the side of the building!”
Damiar calls out in an inspiring song.
♬ So you’re holed up in a burnt-out ruin
You’re taking up defensive positions
Gonna fill with arrows soon
So I have a little proposition
Before we start this little spat
Before you do things that you might rue
I note we haven’t had a chance to chat
Is this fight the thing we all must do?
Before we get all snarly,
Perhaps we can parley
As civilized people and pirates do...
We just want the girl
Thalia is her name
You don’t have to be a churl
Release her, we won’t hold you all to blame
We can stand down from this fighting stance
Let her go! This is your best chance! ♬

Kleines Johann |
Moved you up with everyone else. Let me know if you want to be somewhere else.
Garif Stonetoe |
DM Bag - Doesn't look like you rolled Perception for Nico, so I'm not sure if he gets to act in the surprise round or not. If he does, please move him 50' closer to the bowman on the map.
Damiar's eyes drift from the stone cornice-piece above the door to the door itself and he calls out, "There's more of them! Two of them at the front door, and another along the south side of the building! I don't know if we've found our girl, but we've found something!"
He slips his sling off his belt with one hand, while pointing with the other and saying to his feline friend, "Nico, attack!"
DM Oladon |
Right you are, sir dwarf.
Kitteh Senses: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Nico is rather busy watching Coco, but at the sound of his master's voice he yawns widely and then charges forward!
The definitely-not-bad guys, seeing that they're discovered, attack! The one with a red tassel on his bow fires a shot at Nico and shouts, "Come and get her if you dare, cats of the upper class!"
Pew vs Kitteh: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
The other three fire at various members of the party, though only one arrow strikes its target.
vs Garif: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
vs Iovo (FF): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
vs Phinellippa: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4
Party is up! Kleines, Phinellippa, and Verrix to finish the surprise round, then Damiar and Iovo to start the first full round. Just realized I misread Garif's init somehow, and he should technically have gone after everyone but Kleines... so just going to pretend that's what happened.
Iovo Apastron |
Iovo runs up next to the ruins, hopefully finding a spot that gives her cover from the bowmen at the doorway.
Upper class? Well, that is certainly a first!
Straight-line double move. If you determine that 5' to either side would provide better cover, put her there. You described a bunch of fallen timbers and such.
Phinellippa Dioptrice |
Wincing at the arrow wound, Phinellippa rushes for the cover of her friends, drawing her trusty wand of magic missile as she moves.
"CoCo! Get out of there!"
The Amazing CoCo quickly starts to move away from the action.
Kleines Johann |
"We would rather speak with you than harm you, but if you persist in attacking us we will be forced to defend ourselves" Kleines says, as glaive in hand he rushes toward the front door. Double move. EDIT: haha just kidding, it's a surprise round. Single move toward the door.
Verrix the Pathfinder |
Seeing Nico going after the northern archer, and the others heading to the door, Verrix makes a beeline for the southern archer. "You are outmatched! Return Ms. Andares unharmed, and we will show mercy! Continue to fight, and things will not go well for you!"
Full move. Draw warhammer as he moves. Don't run, so AC doesn't go down.
DM Oladon |
"Outmatched, ha!" calls one of the men. Another laughs loudly and yells back, "The noble will be returned to those she has downtrodden to face justice!"
Damiar Apastron |
Damiar moves forward and shoots!
Longbow+IC+PBS: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 15
Damage+IC+PBS: 1d8 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 + 1 + 1 = 4
DM Oladon |
Verrix, your action was still in the surprise round, so you can only do a single move. I'll let you move to where you want to be.
Damiar, moved you 30' forward. Still not in PBS range. ;)
Damiar's arrow clatters off a charred pillar. The brave and innocent defenders resist the onslaught and fire a volley in return! Those behind the front doors close them a bit more and fire out the slits. The defenders all have cover at the moment.
Red vs Nico: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Orange vs Iovo (cover): 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 - 4 = 14

Purple vs Kleines: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 7
Green vs Verrix: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Party is up! Verrix should rectify his surprise round action before performing this round's actions.
Damiar Apastron |
Damiar moves forward again and shoots. "We're not from the upper class! I'll admit that Thalia is, but she's a nice girl and you should let her go. We won't stop until she's safe!"
Damiar takes careful aim, and shoots.
Longbow+IC+PBS: 1d20 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 4 + 1 + 1 = 26

"Surrender now, and we'll heal your friend and parley!"
Damiar Apastron |
Purple!
DM Oladon |
"Aughk!" gargles the helpless gentleman as he's transfixed by Damiar's arrow. His comrade glances over at him, then bolsters his resolve and waves his bow defiantly.
Iovo Apastron |

Curious to a fault, Iovo calls out “Elves don’t do aristocracy. I didn’t think Andoren did either.”
“What makes you think she has anything to do with that?” I do hope I got that right. Seems I will have to brush up on human politics at some point.
At least we probably have the right place!
Kleines Johann |
"Ow."
Kleines charges forward, blood flowing from his shoulder where the fletching of an arrow juts out. Charging at orange. AC is 15 for the next round.
Glaive, charge: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 2 = 13

Phinellippa Dioptrice |
Phinellippa flicks her wand at the one in green, still cradling her arm with the arrow wound.
magic missile: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Iovo Apastron |
Iovo slings her bow and draws her sap.
DM Oladon |
The gentleman hiding behind the rocks rolls his eyes at Iovo's words. "Of course not. Why d'you think she ran here? Thought she could escape justice, but she won't!"
Kleines nearly takes his foe's head off, but at the last minute the man he's facing ducks behind the door. Phinellippa's magic leaves a welt the size of a Bordik seed pod on the enemy's arm, but he simply grimaces and takes a few deep breaths before raising his bow again.
Garif and Verrix. Verrix should rectify his surprise round action before performing this round's actions.
Iovo Apastron |
Huh? That makes no sense! She didn’t run, she was kidnapped!
“I don’t suppose you fellas are sensible enough to put aside weapons and just explain things, are you? Maybe allow us to talk to the person in charge? Seems one or both of our groups has some bad information!”
At least I chose the right weapon...
Damiar Apastron |
“Agreed. It would be a shame for one of us to die over a misunderstanding! We thought she was kidnapped!”
Damiar keeps her bow out, but waits for them to say something. “For instance you could tell us about her alleged crimes, and we could tell you about her kidnapping?”
Kleines Johann |
Garif Stonetoe |
Garif moves to where he has a better line on the southern attacker, drawing his new wand from his belt. A slow smile crosses his face as he prepares to cast a spell from the wand on the pouch of stones at his belt.
Move action to move, move action to draw wand of magic stone.
Nico. |
Unaware of the conversation going on with the attackers, Nico follows Garif's last command, bounding forward and biting at the bowman!
Move and attack red.
Bite: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Verrix the Pathfinder |
Oops, sorry. Misread. I thought the surprise round had already happened, that Verrix didn't get to act in it, and that we were already on to the first round.
"Andoran has no nobility! An the only true nobles of this world are dragons, anyway!"
Verrix continues his beeline for the southern archer.
(I just moved 20ft from where I was, so that I've used 3 move actions in my last two moves, bringing my action accounting back into balance.)
DM Oladon |
Nico's jaws find purchase on his opponent's arm, drawing blood and an angry curse in Hallit.
The fellow in the doorway glances down once more at his fallen companion, then steps back and yells, "For the People!" as he fires point-blank at Kleines! The cat-beleaguered gentleman to the north drops his bow and draws a sword, while the champion of justice south of the house fires another shot at Verrix before stepping back into the shadow of the eaves.
Damiar and Iovo can come out of delay if they'd like.
