When Lorzub gestures over to Luke, you see a slight smile cross the face of a blonde man who looks to be in his early 20s. He wears a wide-brimmed black hat with a crimson feather sticking out from the band, and his platemail shines as the lamplight gleams off of it. Dangling on his chest is a leather strap carrying seven gold coins, although you don't recognize the currency. The pommel of a large sword sticks up behind his right shoulder.

"I believe what my friend means to say is that the task that Lady Anya set you to turned out to be more formidable than anyone had realized. When she caught on to the onerous nature of the task, it quickly dawned on her that more hands might be necessary."

"It appears you've had a bit of bad luck. Maybe we can change that. Could you tell us a bit about what you were facing, and perhaps we can formulate our path to victory?" Luke flashes his most engaging smile, hoping to distract attention from Lorzub's scowl.

"Don't worry Luke, I know what he meant to say, and perhaps he's right... What attacked me had a cold breath, and we'll need all the help we can. My name is Corso Gaczi, big mouth and small fencer. A pleasure."

Lorzub, who's not much for apologies, takes his scowl back down to a more standard Orc style grimace and says "Well, at any rate that's what we're here to do. We were told your friends were gone to find something to help you, if this thing can be helped. I wonder what's taking them so damn long?" And just as he says this he hears footsteps and looks towards the door.

Having been shown in by Laurentiu, Medraut enters the room as the exchange apparently reaches its end - wearing his usual somber look he stares at the two newcomers.

I will assume Laurentiu already informed that two others have joined our efforts.

"Good evening" - he bows shortly still observing the half orc and the human - "Is everything ok Corso?"

"Making new friends... The hard way..." he smiles at his jest. "They'd like to help with our... issues."

M Human Cleric 4

"The name's Luke, pleased to meet you!" He smiles and extends his hand to Medraut, and takes a moment to look him over. "You appear to be the knowledgeable type, perchance you could tell me more about the fiends you were facing? We should formulate a plan."

Luke thinks for a second. "Actually, we should formulate a lot of plans, in case the first one doesn't go... according to plan. I find seven plans to be a good number - as a rule of thumb." He looks at Medraut expectantly.

With a slight shake of his head, looking at Lucky with a sense of sarcastic disapproval, he glances between him and the newcomer, "Yes, Master Luke has the need to make many plans because the first few inevitably end in failure, relying merely on his luck to save us! My name is Lorzub Skabgrim, and yes, we are here to offer our services in your investigations."

When I say Master Luke it makes me feel more like C3PO...

Medraut extends his hand to meet Luke's. "I am Medraut - pleased to make your acquaintance. And this is Adalieh" - he adds as he motions to the woman next to him.

"Let me first start by taking care of Corso - we can address all the other matters over dinner, but first lets get our friend well underway to his recovery"

Medraut will present the Lesser Restoration potion to Corso.

M Human Cleric 4

Luke laughs good-naturedly at Lorzub's comment, then turns to Adalieh, removes his hat with a small flourish, and makes a shallow bow. "A pleasure, my lady."

He looks back at Lorzub amusedly. "I wouldn't say they end in failure, or you and I wouldn't be standing here, would we? More like, when a good opportunity presents itself to switch to a new plan, I take it! Although often times, that ends up being plan number eight - improvisation."

"Greetings," Adalieh says warily, looking at the newcomers as introductions are made. She glances at Medraut before she strides across the room, examining Corso's state of health.

"You shouldn't strain yourself," she says, not quite looking at anyone but Corso. "Nadia Witch-Blood offered a potion that should help with your recovery. Medraut, if you'd please?"

Corso wolves down the potion offered.

As Corso seems to be getting his strength back, Lorzub remembers the mention of dinner. "So, it seems like your friend is getting his strength back, so how about this dinner you spoke of wizard? My friend and I could use a bite, and I'd like to know what it is Corso went up against that injured him like this."

Not sure what time it is, but my character, much like myself, always likes the sound of dinner!

M Human Cleric 4

"Mmm, a dinner sounds great." Luke pats his belly. "I feel like I haven't eaten for days. Corso, I'd wager you could use a good meal, and I've got a hunch you'll be feeling better by tomorrow morning," he says with a wink.

As if he had heard his cue, Laurentiu knocks politely on the door and tells you that he is about to serve dinner and the Lady insists on the group joining her.

He takes you just across the hall to a formal dining room. The room is dominated by a massive table of dark cherry wood set with exquisite silver utensils and fine Tian porcelain. After you have taken your seats, Lady Anya also enters the room and sits down at the head of the table after a gracefully little curtsey in your direction. She seems pleased to see all of you: "Ah, I see you are already back on your feet, Corso? Impressive. I hope your new companions will help to keep it that way." There is no mockery or scorn in her voice, only sincere sympathy. "Laurentiu, you can serve dinner now!"

The majordomo bows curtly, leaves, and enters the room again to set down a huge plate of meat, cheese, sausage, and even some fruit on the table.

"Oh please, friends, enjoy!"

Lorzub, without much courtesy, lays into the food with a great hunger. Between bites, he begins asking his questions. "So, what was it that you fought that put you down in... well what the hell could do that to you? And what did that thing, if it is a thing, have to do with the rumors going around town? Are these fetchlings really taking people?" Satisfied he'd asked enough questions to keep his hosts explaining, he stabs another piece of meat with his knife and brings it to his plate.

I have breezed through the previous gameplay, but I haven't read it in depth. I can do that to avoid a complete retelling of the story and we can just get to the important bits. However you want to play it.

Adalieh, having calmed down considerably after finally getting to wolf down a proper meal, is glancing at the newcomers with renewed interests. "Creatures of shadow. Difficult to spot in the darkness from what I gathered, they surrounded Corso and drained his strength. There were at least two. Considering the state of this village, I would not be surprised if there were more of them."

"As for the fetchlings... I do not know. The villagers wanted to hang a small fetchling family, certainly they dislike their ilk, and ill repute can be borne of less grotesque actions. Or perhaps the fetchlings are the true culprit. Considering these dark shadows, however, I fear there is something darker operating."

Lorzub, putting down his meat for the first time since he sat and lifting an eyebrow towards Adalieh, "Creatures of Shadow? Hm..." Sitting back, thinking for a second, and looking towards Luke, "It would seem we are going to need a lot of your luck, this is more than we bargained for."

Luke's eyes widen. "Creatures of shadow, well thank the gods you are still alive! It just so happens I heard a friar tell tales of the creatures not a fortnight ago. They attacked an abbey just north of Ridwan. The faithful tried to fight them off, but ordinary steel passed right through their bodies. What's more, the man swore he saw his comrades fall under their touch, and then rise again as wraiths to strike down their former friends." Luke shudders.

"No doubt they were once alive, but no longer. To put them to their final rest, we'll need weapons either holy or arcane. Holy water may also be able to wash away the corruption. How many of these creatures did you see?"

As he watches Lady Anya in all her beauty, Corso curses under his breath. Curse those shadows! I couldn't even lift her frail frame should she ask me for a dance!

"Lady Anya, how wonderful it is to see you again! I'm afraid the local undeads have put me back in my place... You are kind not to notice I can barely lift myself. I have to take it easy some more, but as soon as I can, I'll be jumping and prancing about. You'll see!" He forces a smile and takes a seat, carefully.

As the companions settle, he steals looks in her direction whenever he gets an excuse, wondering how much she has changed since he last saw her.

If prodded about his history, Luke will give some version of this story over dinner.

Luke's story:
Luke grew up in poverty in Absalom - his father died when he was only 5, and his mom was a poor washerwoman. When Luke wasn't helping his mother with her chores and work, he would spend a lot of his free time chasing birds around the city, trying to catch them. Sometimes he did this for fun, sometimes for food. On a brisk autumn day, he was up on a high wall, chasing the largest raven he had ever seen. The bird kept flying just out of reach, but Luke was determined to catch the magnificent beast. The bird perched itself on the edge of the wall and was looking out over the precipice. Seeing that the bird was looking away, Luke lunged, but his foot caught on a raised stone, throwing him off balance. Before he could catch himself, the raven had flown away and Luke was tumbling off the edge of the wall.

As he was falling head over heels off the wall, a panic gripped Luke more intense than anything he had ever felt, for he knew for sure his death was mere seconds away. The deep chill of the air rushing by was intensified by the cold sensation of the blood flowing out of his extremities. But then, as his midair tumbling directed his gaze upwards, he noticed an eagle flying overhead, dangling something in its mouth. Luke saw the eagle release the object and it began falling. As he spun around once more, he felt the object fall directly over his head, landing securely around his neck.

Before he had time to marvel at the bizarre spectacle of an eagle dropping a necklace around the neck of a plummeting child, the ground came rushing towards him. He felt his body sink into the ground with a loud rustling, then he was enveloped by darkness. Am I dead, he thought to himself, is that why it's so dark? But he didn't feel dead - in fact, he didn't feel hurt at all. He grasped for his neck, and felt a number of patterned metal discs, cool to the touch, all bound by a leather thong. Maybe I'm not dead, he thought, but what just happened? He felt a scratchiness on his exposed skin, and heard the crunching of leaves when he moved his limbs. Gods be good, did something break my fall?

Luke came to his senses and began digging through the pile of leaves in which he had landed. When he reached the edge of the pile, he saw that there was a mound of leaves 15 feet high, standing at the base of the 100-foot wall. Looking around, he saw no other leaves covering the ground anywhere else - every leaf in sight was heaped onto the pile which had broken his fall. As he looked about, Luke also saw that some cityfolk had started to assemble, mouths agape.

Taking a few moments to regain his composure, Luke walked over the the crowd to ask what they had seen. "We saw you tumble, lad, and then that bird! The bird came out of the clear blue sky and dropped... what is that around your neck? Anyway, no sooner than it landed about your neck than a tremendous gust of wind came about, it picked up all the leaves within sight, it did! It picked them all up and dropped them in that pile, right there! The pile you landed in!"

The cityfolk gawked and made signs to the gods while the words sunk into Luke's mind. Still not sure what to make of what happened, he humored the onlookers when they asked to kiss the necklace, which he now saw carried seven golden coins inscribed with a language he had never before seen. Well, it can't hurt, he thought, and he also brought the necklace up to his lips and gave one of the coins a firm kiss, filled with exhilaration, wonder, and most of all, gratitude.

From then onwards, Luke was never seen without the amulet around his neck. And from then onwards, everything seemed to go right for Luke. His mom was named in the inheritance of one of her clients, a frugal old man who had no children to leave his pinched pennies to. Luke found he could now handle himself against his bullies, and instead of running away he began to fight back, watching as his opponents fists grazed off him while his fists always seemed guided to their weak points. His confidence soared, and soon he was defending not only himself, but all of the kids in his neighborhood from the bullies that had previously made their lives miserable.

As long as Luke kept on his necklace, his luck never faltered. He searched long and hard for a clue as to what his necklace was, and where it had come from. The local mages insisted there was nothing magic about it. The archivists and antiquarians claimed never to have seen the like. Until one day, when Luke chanced across a foreign monk in bright red robes. Luke happened to notice a sparkle of recognition in his eye, and soon learned from the old monk that the necklace was the holy symbol of a god named Kofusachi, who many worshiped in the land of Tian. The writing on the coins, as well, was Tian writing. But as much as Luke badgered the traveler, the man knew nothing more about Kofusachi, his teachings, or his clergy.

Luke's life suddenly had new focus. Now knowing the divine provenance of his fortune, he knew he could not rest until he found out more about the god Kofusachi. He took to the life of an adventurer, ever looking for clues or signs that would lead him to a master with knowledge of his divine benefactor. In the course of his explorations, he also knew that squandering his gift could offend Kofusachi, so Luke applied himself with relish to overcoming whatever challenges life threw at him, whether they be beasts that need slaying or damsels that need rescuing.

"But that's enough about me," Luke says, suddenly sheepish. "How did you all become adventurers?"

Corso:
You notice no significant change in Anya's appearance. She still seems troubled and concerned about what is happening in the village and with her husband and she also still does not acknowledge your playful remarks with anything more encouraging than a passing smile.

Thank you Luke, that was a perfect example of keeping a game moving. I have no reservations whatsoever about all of you rolling things like knowledge checks and assuming the answers yourselves. I trust you not to exploit that and I think this will help to not bog things down.

Corso frowns as he deals with Anya's lack of interest in him. She's obviously moved on. Perhaps I should too..?

He almost falls asleep at Luke's never ending tale, then stirs when prodded: "Me? I'm no adventurer! Trouble-seeker and trouble-maker is all! I once loved a girl and she broke my heart; that kind of thing..." He blushes slightly, avoiding eye contact with Anya: "I still do..."

Ignoring the obvious tension between the lovebird and girl ignoring him, Lorzub speaks up,"The man with luck talks too much, and I'm sure we'll hear everyone's long, drawn out story along the way. But what are you planning to do about the shadows? You got something to help Corso, but did you get anything to hurt them back?"

M Human Cleric 4

'Well, plan A would be sapping their unlife through prayer. Such vileness suffers misfortune when the gods of good turn their eyes on them. I have a charm that may improve our chances':
Luke is suggesting casting Consecrate and then channeling energy.

'Plan B could be drowning the ghosts in holy water. Temples often sell the stuff at no profit, but if not I could infuse the stuff myself.' He looks over at our host. 'Lady Anya, is there a shrine where we could find it for purchase?'

'Plan C would involve more subtlety - in the past, I've had good luck with such creatures turning a blind eye to my presence. Perhaps we'll be fortunate enough to sneak by them without a fight':
Luke is suggesting casting Hide from Undead.

'Plan D involves much less subtlety - we could charm our swords and swing away. Even the untouchable hate the taste of blessed steel':
Luke is suggesting he could cast Magic Weapon for anyone who may need it.

'And Plan E involves engaging them from a distance - why rush in with swords when a true shot from a crossbow can do the trick?'

'Hmm, but that still leaves us two plans short. Well they say five heads are better than one. How else could we go about this?' Luke stabs at his food distractedly.

Is this format ok for the spoiler/ooc stuff?

When Luke asks about a shrine, Anya replies: "Yes, there is of course a temple to the Midnight Lord. I don't know Radu that well, as he has just recently arrived in town, but I'm sure that he will listen to your requests."

It's okay, though I don't think that it is necessary to "spell out" everything. Most of the time an IC reference should be enough.

"Plans are all well and good," Adalieh nods, looking over and observing Corso's tension. "But what of motive? Why are they here, in Karpad? What are they protecting? Who know of them? Answers, I suppose, we won't find answers to by merely voicing them around a dinner table."

"I am not a fighter, and I would prefer to stay alive. Subtlety sounds preferable to me. What say the rest of you?"

Luke's eyes narrow. "A temple of Zon-Kuthon is not where I would usually expect to find water of purification. But the clergy of the Prince of Pain must be well acquainted with shadowspawn, considering their master's relationship with the beasts. Perhaps they could lend us some expertise..."

He looks back at Lady Anya. "But pray tell, who is this Radu? And how recently has he arrived? Was he brought in in response to the mysterious goings-on?"

GM Null:
Luke will try to observe Anya's body language as she discusses Radu to try and tell if there's anything she's not saying.

Thanks for the feedback - I didn't want to be too opaque, but I agree with you that keeping it IC is better, I'll do that from here on out.

"Oh no, he arrived well before the first outbreak", Anya replies. "His full name is Head Priest Radu Miklos. He is a well-educated man, from Pangolais, if I remember correctly. As far as I have heard, he is trying his best to offer healing to those who require it."

Luke:
Anya doesn't seem to hold back any information on Radu.

Having been silent throughout most of the dinner, and after savoring some wine, Medraut puts in - "I had already shared that I do not really feel much like dealing with the Zon-Kuthon clergy, no matter how honored they may be. Nor will I assume they are in any way related to what has been going on..."

He seems to be lost in thought for a few moments, then continues: "The fact is that our best lead so far has us moving through the area where the shadows have spawned, or been placed at - we were following a wax trail left behind after we investigated the one we believe to be the first victim of all that has been going on, and it lead us to a path from which we had to turn back. I believe pursuing that path until its full investigation may prove important"

"Medraut is right. We should follow that lead to its end. As for me, Luke, I like plan D! But I'll need more rest..."

Lady Anya casually puts her right hand on the table, showing her mutilated ring and pinky finger and chimes in: "I am sorry to hear that, Medraut. But I can assure you, that Radu is not interested in murder or sadism than those misguided Kuthonites you have probably heard of. His preachings focus on what one must do to oneself to find communion."

Seeing that this is not a good time to delve into this topic, Lorzub moves on. "Well, when do we start? Whatever plan we go with is fine by me. Luke's plans may be plentiful, and sometimes ridiculous, but one of them is bound to keep our skin on our backs." Lorzub gets up, stretches and lets out a sound that's some sort of mix between a moan and a growl. "Whatever we decide, I'm headed back to the inn for some shut-eye. I imagine this is the last time for a while that we'll get any sort of real rest." Lorzub starts gathering his gear, getting ready to head to the inn.

If there's more to say, Lorzub waits around for it to be said, if not, he just heads to the inn. I'm assuming that since we just ate dinner there is a good chance it's evening, or else Lorzub is going to bed at an oddly early hour...

M Human Cleric 4

"Well it sounds like we have a course of action. We'll rest the night to let Corso regain his strength, then leave at first light to follow this trail. Wax is a symbol of light, an omen; we must follow it to fight against the darkness."

"We can try to pass by the dark creatures undetected, but if they notice our presence... we'll be ready with ensorcelled steel. Now, let's get some rest and take our time to prepare." Luke shuts his eyes and appears like he might be meditating.

"Oh, please", Lady Anya interjects with a smile as Lorzub mentions going back to the inn. "Please accept my offer to stay with the rest of the group in our guest rooms. It's the least I can do. I will have Laurentiu gather your belongings from the 'Weeping Willow', should you require so."

"I hope to feel better on the morrow! Sleep well Lady Anya, Good night All!"

Let me know how much I should recup from another day of rest. I'm six down at the moment.

M Human Cleric 4

"Some rest sounds welcome. But first, I believe I may pay a visit to the temple and supply myself with holy water. And perhaps supply myself with some information, as well..."

Luke retreats to an empty room, lights a stick of incense and begins throwing a set of knucklebones repeatedly on the table, carefully observing the results.

Spellcraft DC 17 for anyone who observes Luke:
Luke is performing an Augury.

GM Null:
Before Luke enters the temple he will perform an Augury (74% chance of success) concerning whether it would be a good idea to question Radu on whatever he knows about unusual shadows in the region.

As soon as everyone has finished dining, Lady Anya politely takes her leave.

You retreat to the guest rooms as well to get some rest and prepare for the coming day. Night falls, but the ever-blazing fires in the village and outside the mansion shine a flickering light through the windows. Shadows dance on the walls ouf your rooms, an ominous sight after the day's events. Still you manage to get some sleep after all and as the sun climbs over the horizon you get up and ready.

Luke:
You perform the ritual but you gain no insight whatsoever.

Corso, if I'm not mistaken, you already got the benefit of 24 hours of rest in advance so the additional 8 hours of this night won't add to that. Even now your meeting with the shadows wasn't a whole day ago.

As the cleric heals him, he looks at him, incredulous: "That's a m- That's magnificient Luke!" To whom should I pray and give thanks next time I come around some extra wealth?" He jumps out of bed and grabs his sword, swinging it left and right, laughing as his body responds to his mental command: "Ah! Ah! Now we're talkin'! "Hmph, look who's better." Lorzub pretends not to care, but you can tell he's genuinely pleased. "Well, what next? How are we gonna get these undead, creepy bastards?" You can barely understand Lorzub through the food he's stuffing in his mouth.

Memorized Spells:

Wizard Spells Prepared (CL 4, 1 melee touch, 3 ranged touch):
2 (3/day) Flaming Sphere (DC 16), Command Undead, Summon Monster II, Scorching Ray

"I am ready to go Luke. And good morning to all" - he offers a polite smile to everyone as he arrives for breakfast.
