The March of Kings

Game Master Daniel Rust

Beyond the last rugged frontier stretches the home of voracious monsters, capricious fey, wily natives, and vicious bandits. Can the PCs survive the Stolen Lands, bring their dangers to heel, and lay the foundations of a new kingdom?

Guys, when you've created your PCs post something here as that alias.

When you're all present and correct (and when I say correct, I'm looking at you INdran), we'll start.

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

So I was in this pub, drinking holy water, when..
Barkeep shouts Oi! You! I thought I told you before about bringing that @#$! in here! Out!

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

Time to roll for some starting cash (and redo equipment)

4d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 4, 2) = 11

Well, that wasn't at all disappointing.

Male Dhampir Bard (Archaeologist) / 1

test to see if I can get dice rolling correct
3d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 5) = 10

Male Dhampir Bard (Archaeologist) / 1

lucky I plumped for average gold!

Female Human (Kellid) Ranger 1

Okay, just checking that I can post as Guðrún instead of Iourn before I mess up the campaign thread.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

Looks good!

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Looks great! Are you happy with your avatar? She looks suitably no-nonsense. Your Iourn one is particularly terrifying.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

I think I'd have prefered something with more vivid red hair, and without the metal armour, but I am very fond of that expression.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

Nice map, by the way!

Male Aasimar (Angelkin) Summoner (1)

This is just a test to make sure that I can format things correctly
Out of character with the right alias

It's the best map the Swordlords had. If you can fill in the blanks along the way, that would be super.

Two things -

Graham - you need to pick a human ethnicity. My suggestion would be Taldan. They're the most common ethnicity in Brevoy. The barbarian Kellids were conquered in ages past by the empire of Taldor and many Taldans settled there. Taldor has long since lost its influence and is now in serious decline, only retaining its holdings far to the south. You don't get any bonus languages though, as Taldane is the common tongue.

Steve - Eidolons don't get max hp at first level. They get average hp (as do animal companions). There's a precedent in Pathfinder Society organised play for rounding up hp every level. I'm proposing to apply this to all PCs and associated creatures. That makes Rhagael's hp 8.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

So assuming Guðrún lives until second level, she would gain 6 additional hit points instead of rolling 1d10? Or could I choose to take the six or roll the d10? Or did you mean something else entirely?

She could take 6 or roll 1d10. Either is fine. Happy with that as a rule?

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

Very happy.
I use the same houserule.

6 + 3 = 9

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Where d'you get 6+3 from? You had 12 hp before, which I'm assuming was 10+2.

What evolutions does Rhaegal have? I could work it out, but I can't be bothered. Nice trick with Lesser Age Reistance and Immortal Spark by the way.

Male Aasimar (Angelkin) Summoner (1)

I was just testing the dice rolling before I did it on the game. Don't we get maximum HP at level one or are Eidolons different? What did you think to the armoured Eidolon. The only negative that you suffer for wearing armour that you aren't proficient with is suffering its armour check penalty to your to hit rolls. Leather armour has no check penalty, so all Eidolons should wear it until they can afford master worked studded leather.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Ah, I see. Good man.

NO, Eidolons do not get max hit points. Only PCs. But hey, you can give your hit points to Rhaegel so he'll be fine.

No problems with a cat in leather armour. I'm sure it's very fetching.

Can I take average hit points for the Eidolon instead of rolling? I don't trust those virtual dice.

Rhaegals three evolutions are Claws, Scent and improved natural armour

Ah, I have just noticed that higher up the thread you have already discussed HP, Eidolons and averages. Sorry about that - I will switch Rhaegals HP to 8.

I guess until Indran joins, somebody has to be five minutes behind the conversation. ;-)

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Good job, Steve. Good job of being very on the old and also oblivious at the same time. It's an impressive method.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

Daniel: as combat seems imminent, can I ask how you want us to do it?

Do we type the attack rolls and damage rolls in the same post to save time? Then the damage roll can just be ignored if we miss?

What happens if we score a critical threat? Do we add a follow up post more numbers, or do we go back an edit the previous post if we can? I assume there's some sort of time limit on editing previous posts?

If we edit a post with die rolls in, are the die rolls then changed when the post is updated?

Actually, I figure the last one out foy myself.

Female Human (Kellid) Ranger 1

Spear damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

Edit one.

Edit two. No the die roll isn't recalculated. Jolly good.

Male Dhampir Bard (Archaeologist) / 1

Yes i'd had the same thought and was pleasantly surprised too

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

It's pleasingly INdran proof (slander I know, but he'll never see this).

I think roll to hit and damage at the same time. That way, I won't have to inform you if you've hit or not before you roll damage.

If you roll a critical threat, edit your post to roll the confirmation (and damage).

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Whoever deleted the images on the google doc, I've restored them. Don't make me take away your editing privileges!

Male Dhampir Bard (Archaeologist) / 1

Can I suggest that in combat ; we just roll everything regardless

eg. for jorquimo using longsword & archaeologists luck
to-hit (critical on 19/20)
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 1 = 12

confirmation (if required)
1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Std damage
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Extra Critical Damage (if required)
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

then you can have the "post" setup as a predefined text in a notepad or the like and simply cut/paste/tweak as required.

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

I like the idea of rolling everything regardless, should streamline combat nicely. I wonder how compact it can be all made, fairly it seems.

Rhodeus' Heavy Mace (20/x3):
Hit: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 (Confirm Critical:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 1 = 11)
Damage:1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 (Extra Critical Damage:2d8 + 2 ⇒ (1, 8) + 2 = 11)

which is

{weapon}
Hit: {dice}1d20+1{/dice} (Confirm Critical:{dice}1d20+1{/dice})
Damage:{dice}1d8+1{/dice} (Extra Critical Damage:{dice}2d8+2{/dice})

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

Very nice Rhodeus. I was thinking that Jorq's post was thorough but quite long. That's a very nice format and if you're just copying and pasting, it shouldn't be too time consuming.

FYI, the battle map is coming along nicely. Turns out Sanglamore is on the roof, not in bed as I first thought

Male Dhampir Bard (Archaeologist) / 1

very nice - what do the others think

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 8

By the way, that was hardly an impressive series of rolls guys. No bandits are currently quaking in their boots.

I do like the picture of Jess the Mule whoever did that. Jon? Don't forget you've got Claptrap the old horse too.

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

I put the picture of the mule there along with the red rope connecting it to the wagon. I meant to put both of them there but got distracted ;)

I was also impressed at the poor quality of the rolls. The RNG must be saving all the good ones for the gameplay thread. At least I hope so.

Ok guys. I have put a spreadsheet for Steve's accounting on the blog here.

Feel free to tart it up a bit or add more fields. I've left plenty of room for Objet D'art.

Oh, and everyone have 150xp.

Thanks - have updated my PC with an experience section, but I know it's wrong as I don't know if we're on Fast/Medium or Slow advancement?

You're welcome. You earned it!

It'll be the medium advancement, so you need another 1,850xp. Peanuts. It's important to point out now that you can gain xp through exploration. Your objective is to explore the region so, for every hex explored you gain 100xp. Get exploring!

New map of explored area available. More will be revealed as you explore. The road east is to Restov. West and north is to Issia and eventually Numeria. The bandits came from the south.

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

There's a remarkable amount of black on that map. Quite some exploring to do I feel.

Sorry guys. I've had a manic few days. I'll update properly tomorrow evening.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

I think Steve and I could keep going for a few more days yet!

I've worked out a spreadsheet, which I will put on the blog, that works out your average speed per mile based on your various percentage probabilities of making your survival rolls. You're currently going at 1.26 mph.

Here's the spreadsheet for average mph while tracking. We can use this instead of making hundreds of rolls if you like. It means you have traveled 15 miles in the 12 hours of daylight today.

RPG Superstar 2008 Top 8

Looked at the spreadsheet. All the numbers made my brain hurt. I'm happy to use it, though. One question: does Guðrún's modifier to track include the +2 for her favoured enemies? I'm at +9 (1 rank +3 class skill bonus +2 Wisdom +1 ranger track bonus +2 favoured enemy) when tracking humans, before Sanglamore and Rhaegal work their mojo.

No, it wasn't factored in. It is now. You're now moving at 1.43mph! Hooray!

Map updated with your progress: Map

Although you're currently occupied with more pressing matters, your overall mission is to explore the map and record it for the Swordlords. Each hex covers an area of around 95 square miles. It takes quite some time to explore such an area and thoroughly survey the region. I've updated the tracking spreadsheet with average traveling and exploration times. They're rules of thumb and subject to GM fiat (of course), but they give you a good idea.

Hey Guys. Just to let you know that at long last we move house on Friday. Our house has been on the market for two and a half years!

It means that I might not find the time to get on in the next few days. After we move though, we wont have any broadband in the new house until the 9th so until then you might not hear much from me. Just don't get us killed!

Dan - Generally speaking Rhaegal will act arrogant and prickly, but is of strong moral fibre (at least in his opinion). Sanglamore on the other hand is light-hearted and laissez-faire but morally questionable. In a fight Sanglamore would aim to cast shield on Rhaegal and then stand behind him and use his reach weapon.

Congrats Steve. Hope it all goes well. If you need any help moving just let INdran know.

I'm going to be away for a few days now, so my responses might be limited. I'll see what I can do though.

Male Human (Taldan) Cleric 1

Congrats. Must be the season for moving house. We (well, Emma) just completed on buying a house but we are moving somewhat more slowly, over the next 6 weeks.
