The March Hare's Shadowed Keep on the Borderland (Inactive)

Game Master The March Hare

A ruined monument to folly and ego, the Shadowed Keep stands atop an isolated bluff deep in a mist-wreathed forest. Sacked by marauding goblins decades ago the place was thought abandoned, but shadows now creep among the forest's great boles and footprints have appeared on the single, overgrown track leading to the keep. Travellers have begun to disappear with alarming regularity from the nearby road and the local folk fear some slumbering evil has claimed the ruin as its own.

Dare you brave the terrors of the Shadowed Keep to crush that which lurks within or will darkness shroud the surrounding lands?

Calling all intrepid heroes! I am seeking 4 or 5 1st level PCs for a new play by post venture. I'll be running 'Shadowed Keep on the Borderlands' from Raging Swan Press, a well-designed site-based dungeon crawl which hearkens back to some of fantasy role-playing's classic dungeons.

As for me, I am a first-time play by post DM, but I have played and DM'ed RPGs of all stripes for the better part of thirty years. I hope to strike a tone which combines the best elements of classic dungeon crawling with the development of interesting character personalities. We will be largely sticking to Pathfinder Core Rules only, although I may allow exceptions, on a case by case basis.

I'm hoping to kick off this adventure soon, so I expect this will be a fairly brief recruitment process. That said, it's not necessarily first come, first served. Rather, I will simply end recruitment when I have found four or five players who seem like a good fit for me as DM, and for this game. So long as I haven't yet stated that recruitment is closed, you're still welcome to throw your hat in the ring.

If you're interested, please post with a little bit of information about yourself. Who are you, why do you want to play, why should I pick you? Fully developed character sheets or backgrounds are not necessary, but if you have a preference for a certain party role, you may say so. Once I've selected the players, we can collaboratively build a balanced party together.

Any questions, please just ask. I'm looking forward to reading your ideas!

Consider me interested.

I am a 15 year veteran gamer with some DM experience which has caused me to be more sympathetic with the other side of the screen. I am a bit of an optimizer, as I have actually contributed a guide for the Dragon Disciple, but mechanics aren't the only things that interest me. I like to help other people out, I like to have complex characters who aren't always what they seem at first. I also like filling in roles in parties that are lacking in some department, which I don't get to do a whole lot when posting a character for a PBP.

I am intrigued by a good old fashioned dungeon crawl and a concept based more on team synergy than a bunch of people who have nothing to do with one another. I am pretty busy on the weekends so you might not hear from me on Sundays. I won't be heartbroken if I can't do this one, but I do like where you are going with it, and I appreciate your consideration.

What are the character creation guidelines? CRB, APG, UM? Just looking for more detail before I try for consideration.

Primarily Core Rulebook only, although I might make an exception here or there if asked.

Note that such exceptions are much more likely to be approved for small things (i.e., a spell or a piece of equipment) than large (like races or classes). That said, there's no harm in asking.

Just know that if you're thinking about something like a Half-Aboleth Gunslinger, this isn't the right game for you. ;)

Ah, fair enough.

Well then, in addition to my post above regarding allowable sources, consider the following. Starting gold will be average. Evil and CN alignments are not allowed. I am leaning towards not allowing traits, but I am open for discussion on this.

As for ability scores, I am somewhat torn between a point buy method and rolling dice. This is something I had hoped to discuss further with the players, once selected.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have further questions.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

I'm very much interested in playing. I've been both a player and a DM since 1974 when the first little D&D books came out. I've been playing PF for about a year now. I'm not always an expert at min-maxing characters, I just like to play someone with a fun personality and interesting background. I usually like to fill support/skill roles like rogue, utility mage or bow ranger, but am willing to play just about anything.

I'm retired so can post multiple times per day most of the time if the game moves that fast, but can most definitely post at least once a day.

If you decide to use dice rolls, here are mine:

4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 2, 4) = 10 8
4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 2, 6) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 2, 6) = 17 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 6) = 16 15
4d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5, 4) = 15 13
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 5, 5) = 16 15

If you opt for a point build, I'm good with that too.

Thanks for considering me for the game.

Hello, since you have asked so, let me tell you a bit of me. I'd call my self a mature role player, with 37 years of age. I started playing with Advanced D&D when I was 17, so I guess I have some experience in there as well.

Living in Europe, usually I run 2 different campaigns for my RL long-time friends - one MechWarrior campaign, which is paused currently, and another huuuuuge Forgotten Realms based campaign, based on Pathfinder rules.

Also I play in another high-level, home-brew setting based on 3.5E

What I was hoping to find/try here is a game based on Pathfinder rules, if possible set in Golarion (following any of the AP's would be great), but actually any PF based game would be fine. Maybe even 3.5, if the premise of the game looks interesting enough.

So, to a potential GM's out there - hope this catches your eye. Will check message-boards (relatively) often ;-)

Sounds like a fun adventure...I'd love throw my hat in the ring. I'm fairly new to PbP games but have enjoyed the few I have been involved with over the past few months.

As much as it pains me to admit I am very much an adult at this point, as I will turn 41 later this year. I'm a "original Red Box" veteran gamer. I live on the east coast and between my computers at home, work and my portable devices I am able to post any time I'm not sleeping.

I prefer playing Rogue-esque characters but am comfortable with other martial classes and arcane casters as well. I generally steer clear of the divine classes; I don't feel I play them well enough to do them justice.

When designing a character I always start with a basic idea of who he or she is, but I've found that I dont truly know who my characters are until I've seen how they react during the first few encounters. Sometimes my characters surprise me and fly off in the complete opposite direction I expect them to...and it is at that point that they truly become a total blast to play.

Hi, I would love to play in this game. I have been table top roll playing for the last three years, All but about the first six months of that is PF. I have also LARPed in the Old World of Darkness. I have just started my first PbP a few days ago and so far I am having fun. I like to play a concept that may or may not be optimized, and then optimize for the concept. I am currently on the job market, so I can post frequently, but even when I am employed, I will be able to post via my phone. I want to play because a well run role playing game allows for great possibilities that video games can not touch. Why you should pick me. I post quickly, I play hard and while I will bring up a rule if I think it has been accidentally overlooked, I am a firm believer in rule 0.

Hi all,

I am very pleased with the response I have received thus far! It seems that there are some prospective players out there who I feel are kindred spirits in terms of what they hope to get out of this game. Thus, I am nearly ready to end the recruitment process. Still, I do believe there may be room for one or two others to throw a hat in the ring. The time to do so is likely running short, however.

Looking at the name of your avatar, I have to ask. Are you a crazy GM?

Not at all. Just a fan of classic fantasy literature. :)

I have been playing RPGs since 1991 or so starting with Hero Quest. I prefer a rolls for points character gen as it can lead to inspiration for what you want to play or even how you are going to develop a personality trait. I was bit confused by the D20 system when I first picked it up in '09 with the release of the Pathfinder game having known really only 2nd ed. DND up till then. I am a frequent poster with spots in games lasting over a year and still kicking. Classic dungeon crawl sounds like a blast and if you have a spot open, I would be happy fill the needed role. I am not a rules lawyer and trust the DM will make the best decision for game to stay fun and challenging. I don't care if my character gets whacked by failing to check for a trap on a door or chest. I hold no hard feelings or get butt hurt over it.

If you die, it sounds like the chance to come up with another concept to me. In any case, playing in a classic play it as it lies game sounds on point to me.

Thanks for all your interest.

I think, based on what I've seen here (and maybe a little snooping into some other threads as well...) that we can make a fine game of things with the following as players.

Oterisk
JAF0
Deane Beman
SuperUberGeek
Bilbo Bang-Bang

Could you five please head on over to the Discussion thread, please, and we'll get cracking on some PCs.

Mihajlo, sorry you didn't quite make the cut. I figured five PCs is about the most I can run without having to make serious modifications to the module, so I capped it out there. My best to you.

Thank you all! Let's make this a great game.

No problemo, enjoy the game boys and girls :)
