Kane grimaces at the piercing pain in his shoulder, but ignores it. Basic battlefield strategy, remove the wounded before moving on to the next target.

With that in mind, if Algon hits and kills the worg, this will be against the goblin on the other one. If not, then this will be against the worg.

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Akuleh's spear pokes at the worg, keeping it off balance. Bendoc's stone sails overheard as Kadrian stabs the worg. Izbela empowers Algon but the brave paladin is unable to land a blow from the ground. Rak skewers a worg and it snarls with contempt.

A goblin stabs his spear into Kane as it's worg bites into him and drags him to the ground. The riderless worg savagely rips out the downed paladin's throat. Another goblin tries to stab Kadrian, but the noble human is able to parry away the spear. The goblin's worg bites at Rak but the dwarf's spear point keeps the worg at bay.

Kane takes 3 points of piercing damage and 5 points of bite damage and is tripped. Algon takes 12 points of bite damage from a critical bite.

A cold tendril of some rarely felt emotion slithers into the eidolon's being at seeing his thrust miss its mark. Looking into the worg's blood red eyes, he knows his time on this plane has drawn to an end for now. Stay safe, little one, Algon tells his summoner mentally, a flicker of guilt resonating from his end of the link. The slavering maw of the beast is the last thing he sees before a searing pain in his throat makes his vision fade to black.

In spite of the differences between the summoner and her eidolon, Bela can't help but to feel slightly overcome with emotion at the sentiment she feels through her bond with Algon. In spite of the knowledge that he would be back the following day, little worse for wear, her eyes still water with unshed tears at the sight of her guardian savaged by the worg. Although she rues not having a reserve of magic to call upon that would help Algon at present, seeing Kane taken to the ground in the same fashion her paladin had been is a stiff reminder that there will be time for regret later.

Unable to access her gift of conjuration so long as Algon remains bound to the Material Plane, and therefore unable to bring any summons on the field to command, it doesn't stop her from trying to guide the actions of her companions from her vantage point. "We should focus on the beasts first. They seem to pose the greatest threat. Shoanti," Bela calls, regrettably yet to learn the man's name, "I'm going to try a spell to distract the creature in front of you. If you can bring down other one, we'll see if we can't buy Kane a little time to get to his feet." That said, Bela attempts to cloud the mind of the worg that has Kane in its sights.

"Fair enough, Card Reader," Akuleh calls back to Bela, recalling a moment later that there are some among their group to whom he has still not given his name. Grimacing with pain and the loss of his comrade, Kane grips his axe and brings it close to his chest, attempting to guard himself from attack. "I need a hand here!"

Curse of the Crimson Throne Roll20

Kadrian's rapier penetrates the worg's thick skull and finds the foul creature's brain. It topples over, sending it's rider to the ground. The goblin expertly shifts it's weight and lands on it's feet only to be impaled by a longspear. Bendoc continues to miss with his stones. Izbela's spell has no effect on beast or rider and Akuleh spear falls short as well. Kane goes into survival mode and uses his axe to fend off all attacks.

The remaining goblin readies to throw his shortspear. Akuleh, seeing the attack coming makes the goblin pay with a longspear through it's throat. The worg that felled Algon continues to bite into the paladin spilling more and more blood. The worg that tripped Kane continues to try to bite at Kane, but the guardsman's axe served as a shield well enough to deflect the worg's bite.

Algon takes 9 points of bite damage.

Akuleh watches with horror as the worg tears into Kane yet again and as the mighty guardsman slips from consciousness. "Kane! Do no let this beast overcome you, Kane. It is not yet your time to join the spirits!" Akuleh calls upon those same spirits to keep Kane in his body and not to pass on to the next life, for there is more work for him to do in this world. Wisps of light and energy encircle the man, securing his life for the moment. Akuleh knows, however, that Kane is still vulnerable to further attacks from the worg, so he steps closer and slaps the beast's hindquarters with the butt of his spear to draw its attention off of Kane.

As soon as the worg has keeled over from its wounds, Bela moves to crouch over the prone body of the guardsman. She looks uncertainly at the ragged mess that's been made of the man's shoulder and leg, as well as the wound he sustained from a goblin's spear. It's a miracle he still draws breath... For the first time in her life, she rues not devoting half as much time to studying anatomy and the healing arts as she devoted to the Planes. Luckily, one amongst their number was skilled in healing, Bela notices as Rak kneels and cures Kane of his more grievous wounds. "You... You mean to tell me you had that within you this entire time?!"

Equal parts exasperated and relieved, Bela rises to her feet with a sigh, taking a moment to collect herself before speaking again. "Forgive me, Rak. I'm not accustomed to such death and bloodshed," the summoner apologizes in a tone laden with weariness. The evening's battles have clearly taken their toll, the strain of calling upon so much magic making itself manifest in the woman's voice and overall appearance. Still, no reason to be snappy at her comrades. Fixing the dwarf with an apologetic look, Bela says, "If it weren't for you and our Shoanti friend, I'm afraid we would have another to add to those we've lost this day."

Seeing the life leave the eyes of the worg, Kadrian smiled and sheathed his rapier.

The worg collapses onto Akuleh's chest, and the Shoanti exhales heavily at the sudden impact. "Someone get this beast off of me," he grunts angrily, his arm bleeding and limp at his side.

Kadrian quickly moved over to assist Rak in removing the now-dead worg from Akuleh's person.

After dumping the worg corpse to the side, Kadrian looked on as both dwarf and shoanti doctored Kane's wounds.

"There, there", whispered Kadrian. "It's all right."

"Be right back", said Kadrian to his fellow defenders. "I'll go check on our man over there.

Continuing to kneel at the guard's side, Rak looks up at 'Bela with sympathy in his eyes. "Aye. Indeed, Cayden offers a number of gifts to his most loyal servants, and some amount of healing he has offered me. But it is a limited power he grants; I cannot just do it at will."

When Kadrian comes up and begins comforting Izbela, the dwarf's eyes widen briefly as something clicks into place. "The Accidental God has many allies in that realm, pretty 'Bela; today, he made sure that Desna's vessel was on hand when my abilities were needed later. Father Zantus was able to heal Kadrian--heal all of us--before, and now," he looks down at Kane, "we all survive. Drunkenness does not preclude wisdom; my Man foresaw our need, and made sure we had all that we needed. We shall drink to our health and his honor deeply tonight."

Kane groans as he awakens, pushing himself up off the ground with his greataxe. "That... was unfortunate. It's been too long since I've been on the front lines of the battlefield, I may be a bit rusty." He then looks to Rak and Akuleh. "Master dwarf, I thank you for the healing. And master Shoanti, for drawing the beast from me. I owe you both a debt."

Seeing that his companions are fine Bendoc moves over to the human man the goblins were originally toying with. "It's safe the foul creatures are destroyed," he announces.

Taking comfort in Kadrian's gesture and the knowledge that he escaped the battle unscathed, Bela watches for a few moments as the swashbuckler goes to check on the man they've rescued. When her attention turns back to Rak, she notices the knowing glint in his eyes. Sure enough, as he speaks, it becomes more obvious that he knows her concern was not for Kane, but rather Kadrian. Although Rak's words are gentle, the admonishment is clear. "No, drunkenness does not preclude wisdom, but affection may," she says, glancing over at the noble scion. Her smile is rueful when she meets the dwarf's wise eyes again. "I will try to remember that in the future. ...I'm sorry for questioning your judgement."

Hoping that the misunderstanding is behind them, Bela shifts her concern back to the two injured warriors. "Do either of you need help making it back to the Cathedral?"

Akuleh stands alongside the guard and nods at him. "You would do the same in my place, I know. Let us hope that we do not find ourselves in such a situation before long, however."

"Thank you, miss, but I can still walk." Akuleh suddenly recalls his thought from the start of the fight. He still had not introduced himself to this young woman. "Oh, and you may call me Akuleh. I know there are not many of my people in this town, but it might help to be able to name me should we meet any other Shoanti."

Bela smiles and inclines her head at Akuleh's refusal, expecting nothing else from the one of the men who fearlessly stared down the worgs. Although she is confident that the Shoanti had overheard her giving her name to Kadrian at the Festival, propriety would dictate a formal introduction. By force of habit, Bela extends her hand in greeting, realizes her faux pas a moment later at seeing his one mangled arm and the spear he holds with the other, and retracts her hand with a sheepish smile. "It is a pleasure to finally make your acquaintance, Akuleh. I do hope you'll call me Bela. After what we've endured together this night, I would think we all might be on reasonably familiar terms." Remembering what the man had called her during the fight, Bela adds, "Besides, Card Reader is hardly an accurate description of me. But if you're still interested in having your fortune misread, I'll have to give you a demonstration one of these days."

Casting a glance over to Bendoc and Kadrian attempting to speak with the formerly cornered man, Bela suggests, "Perhaps we should find out what, if anything, this man can tell us. Then we can discuss among us what our next course of action should be." As she says this, her gaze shifts back to the men beside her, focusing on Akuleh and Kane. The need to secure the north gate has not been forgotten by the summoner, but she also feels a nearly irrepressible instinct to demand that the two return to the Cathedral. Yet, as they seem to be seasoned warriors by her estimation, she will leave the decision of whether or not to continue up to them.

"Akulah; a good name. It suits you well. I trust you've surmised that I am called Rak."

Rak follows Bela's gaze towards the man they'd saved. Or do her eyes follow young Kadrian?

"I agree, Bela. We should learn what we can from this fellow." He begins moving towards the man, joining Bendoc and Kadrian.

Before he even introduces himself, Kadrian recognizes the man as Aldern Foxglove, a minor noble from Magnimar.

"My the gods, thank you, thank you for saving me. I am in your debt. You are all heroes, blessed by the gods, and..oh my. Such...lovely heroes at that" he says as his gaze lands on Izbela. He approaches Izbela directly, bypassing any in his way.

"Truly, I am a lucky man indeed." He bows down to one knee and politely takes her hand, placing a small, quick kiss on it.

"I am Aldern Foxglove, of the Magnimar Foxgloves. Shirley you have heard of me. You must come to dine with me. I insist!" He turns and looks at everyone, taking in all of the group.

"Yes, you will all be my guests. I won't take no for an answer, not after you risked your lives to save mine. Please, come by the Rusty Dragon tomorrow evening. I will have Ameiko prepare such a feast. Please, say you will join me."

"We'll discuss such an event when the town is safe, Lord Foxglove," Kane says sternly, glaring at the man disapprovingly. "For now, I highly recommend you get to the Cathedral. Father Zantus is organizing a civilian safehouse there."

Rak smacks Kane with the flat of his spear blade, connecting with the wide flat back of the guard's breastplate to produce a resounding <<clang>> that resonates throughout the area.

"We'd be happy to join you, all of us." The dwarf looks up at the guard, wondering if there will be a challenge to this.

"Our very serious guard is right, you should check in with Father Zantus as soon as you can. For now, though, are you okay? How came you to be so... singularly attacked by these beasts?'

Kadrian, recognizing the gentleman, walked to him, hand outstrecthed.
"Ah. Hello, good sir. Is every..,"

Looking on in amazement, something dark and angry awoke deep within Kadrian. OH. NO. YOU. DON'T!

Spend on with such urgency, Kadrian walked right up and stood inbetween Aldren and Izbela.

"I'm Kadrian Deverin, of the Sandpoint Deverins, spoke the swashbuckler, again extending his hand. "I'm sorry you came to Sandpoint, at such an dangerous time. Please follow us to the Catherdral. It appears to be the only island of protection in this chaos, good sir", added Kadrian.
