The Many-Faced GM |
Roll20.net will be used for maps. Please PM me an email address to receive an invite to the game site.
Please introduce yourselves, discuss characters, backgrounds, and anything else you'd like. I will be reviewing and auditing characters before we begin so make sure your selections are finalized. Let me know if you have any questions.
Your profile should contain the below information for ease of access:
Sex Race | HP 00/00 | AC 00, Touch 00, Flatfooted 00 CMD 00 | Saves F 0, R 0, W 0 | Darkvision 60 ft.; Perception +0, Sense Motive +0; Init +0 | Status: Normal
Please do not spoiler the above. It makes it harder to manipulate when on a mobile device.
And finally, welcome to the game.
Izbela Vauni |
Hello everyone! I'm Kat, and I'm very happy to have been selected along with you all.
This is my character, Izbela. She's a summoner who uses harrow cards to empower her summons. Although a native of Sandpoint, she's been at the Twilight Academy in Galdurian for the last two years. She was something of a homebody back home, but I don't think it's completely unreasonable for her and other native characters to have known each other before the adventure begins, so I'm open to discussing that.
There's also Algon, Izbela's eidolon. He'll be a strong and silent companion for the most part. I'm not a big fan of talking to myself, so I'll keep the interactions between Bela & Algon to a minimum. You all are more than welcome to roleplay with both characters, though. =)
Rak Opal |
Dot. I'm looking forward to this one.
We have three divine casters in this party, and two inquisitors. Are there any spell adjustments we should make between us?
The Many-Faced GM |
The campaign thread is open. Feel free to dot and delete or make a post with your interactions. I will post the game mechanics probably tomorrow.
Akuleh Speaks With Ancients |
Dot. Thanks again for the pick, GM! Really looking forward to playing with all of you!
I'm Jordan, by the way. My character is Akuleh Speaks with Ancients, though unless any of you are Shoanti, he'll simply go by Akuleh until he decides to share his full name with you as trusted comrades. My original plan is for Akuleh to kind of come out of the wilderness into Sandpoint following a vision he received, which would make him pretty disconnected from other adventurers, but I could see him potentially having interacted with Rak if his travels ever took him through the Storval Plateau.
Akuleh will probably tend more toward the serious side, but I'll do my best to avoid brooding. :D
Again, looking forward to the game!
The Many-Faced GM |
A few things before we really get started.
You don't have to post in the campaign thread yet. You can if you want to, but I put up the first post mainly for dotting and to set the scene. Talk some and figure out where you are in the festival, what you are doing, what you are wearing, who you know, etc.
Your posts should be more than one liners and a die roll. That's fine occasionally but it shouldn't be the norm. Your characters are living, breathing people with feelings and motivations. Try to bring those out some as you describe what they are doing, you don't have to write paragraphs, but "I hit it with my sword" gets very boring very fast.
Combat and Initiative. I will roll everyone's initiative and post in block order. Meaning some of you go, the monsters go, then everyone goes again. The order in which you post will be the order in which actions resolve. It's just faster that way in PbP. High initiative only really matters in round one. You can always wait for someone else to go and I will try to post results before the end of the round so that if your action is dependent on someone else's we won't hold things up.
The more you put into this the more you will get out of it. At minimum, I expect one post a weekday. More is encouraged. Weekends are always slower so there are no expectations on the weekends but I try to post when I can. I may not post every day. I will try to keep things moving but I'm not going to rush scenes or cut you off. A large part of the pace will come from you. Most importantly though, try to have fun.
I believe all of you have less than 1,000 posts on these forums and that's why I refer to you as the rookies. Some of the best people I play with are "rookies" and everyone's got to start some where. Don't let any of that bother you. If you have questions, ask them here in the discussion thread. If you are unsure of something, please ask.

Vacation warning
This is an early heads-up that I will be on vacation from the 24th (Wed) PM (EST) through the 29th (Mon) PM. I'm heading to a music festival; I expect there to be some level of internet access, though I don't know how reliable it will be or how distracted I will be. Posting may be sparse while I'm away. Please feel free to bot me if I'm holding things up. (I prefer it if you roll and confirm lots of criticals. Thanks!)
Kadrian Deverin |
Hello, everyone. So glad to be here.
Kadrian Deverin is a noble character. If you live in Sandpoint or in the surrounding area, you have at least heard of Kadrian Deverin. Kendra Deverin, the mayor of Sandpoint, is Kadrian's aunt. Kadrian's side of the family tree uphelds the Deverin Family businesses, mainly farming and brewing, of which Kadrian is a brewer. Any rumors you heard about Kadrian often involve his various romantic encounters with the maidens of Sandpoint. If you have a decent Charisma, and are female and unmarried, don't be surprised if Kadrian flirts with you. Despite this, he is no fop, and is gregarious with others.
Kadrian will be entering the Festival early in the morning, on one of the family delivery carts, with the last deliveries of Deverin ales and wines, to be delivered to the local bars and to those organizing the large feast in town. Kadrian is not in full noble garb, but all his clothes look of high quality, with his masterwork rapier holding a Deverin family crest in the hilt. His light horse, Barley, will be back at the Main House in the Farmlands.

I believe all of the invites for the roll20 site have been sent out. Please let me know if you have not received one. When you login to the site, please make a post in roll20 stating you character's name so I can assign control of your token to you.
Is anyone not familiar with roll20?
I am in the process of auditing characters. Once done and any changes have been made, we will proceed with the next scene. In the mean time, feel free to play out the festival and introductions.
@Rak, thank you for the notice.
Izbela Vauni |
I haven't used roll20 before, but I'm familiarizing myself through the tutorial they have set up. Are there any particular sections I should be paying special attention to?
The Many-Faced GM |
Since we're only really using roll20 for maps, you really only need to be able to move your token around the map.
It does have a lot of tools; initiative tracker, rulers and measures, character sheets that can auto roll for you, libraries of monsters, and various counters.
I use it for my real life game both in person and when we can't be there in person. It's just easier than drawing maps and transporting figures.
Izbela Vauni |
Oh good, for a moment I was worried I'd have to learn what all eight hundred buttons do before the game started.
Speaking of libraries of monsters, how would you like to handle summons? I have the bookkeeping and stat block part covered, but as far as botting them is concerned, I wasn't sure if that was something you prefer to do or you prefer the player to do.
Rak Opal |
I use Roll20 for another PbP, also just for maps. I was talking to a friend who uses it for tabletop, though, and she says her games have become laptop games, even though everyone sits at the same table. :)

The bottom line with summoned monsters is whether you can communicate with them. You can always start in control and bot them. I imagine most things you summon will be celestial and since you can speak celestial you should be fine. Now if you were to summon a demon, that would be different.
Izbela Vauni |
Oh nice, that'll simplify things quite a bit.
And to my fellow players, it's just occurred to me that not having Bela join you all for lunch might seem a bit standoffish. Not my intention at all. I just worried having everyone meet each other before the significant event would be a bit contrived...
On a related note, sometimes I overthink things. =)
Akuleh Speaks With Ancients |
Kane, are you at the feasts or back at your guard post? I thought you were at the table for some reason and tried to strike up a conversation, but I may have misread your post.
Akuleh Speaks With Ancients |
Cool. Thanks for the clarification!
Izbela Vauni |
Hah, I'm glad my character isn't the only one being a wallflower, Kane. Although I have to say, I'm starting to regret my decision just a touch. When I made my intro, I assumed that the excitement would have been underway by now. But, at least the lull has given me time to really cement my idea of Izbela's voice.
I'm enjoying the back and forth between all the other characters, though. Nice to see that Bela will be among good company soon enough.
The Many-Faced GM |
I've posted game rules on the Campaign tab under the Festival Games spoiler. I'm about ready to move forward so you have until Monday to finish up having fun (or grumbling) at the festival.
You guys are doing great and I like what I'm seeing.
Izbela Vauni |
I'm not sure if we need to put it to a vote or not, but I'm ready to move on after the tug-of-war if you all are. =)
Poor Kane must be bored senseless.
The Many-Faced GM |
We will be moving on after the tug of war. What, you thought this was a democracy?
Seriously though, you guys have been doing great so I didn't want to interupt but I'm here and ready. Get your last few posts in and I'll start things rolling sometime tomorrow.
Izbela Vauni |
Of course not! I knew this was a GMocracy when I signed up. But thanks! I've been happy to have the time to suss out my character's...err, character. But definitely ready to move the story along, if it pleases your GMajesty.
Kadrian Deverin |
Get your last few posts in and I'll start things rolling sometime tomorrow.
Well, if no one minds. I will get the tug-of-war started.
The Many-Faced GM |
I hope everyone enjoyed their last weekend of summer.
Now back to gaming.
Izbela Vauni |
I wish I could enjoy a last weekend of summer. I live in Miami, though, where every day is summer. I hope everyone enjoyed their Labor Day Weekend.
Happy to be back to gaming! Just so I don't hold things up this round, when you said "Everyone goes", you meant "everyone goes, except Izbela" right? And are Bela & Kane able to see the goblins moving in from the south, or is the stage obscuring their vision? Not sure how high the thing is.
The Many-Faced GM |
You got me there, Izbela goes after the goblins.
Yes, you can see and hear the goblins (as well as panicked screaming) opposite the platform. It's only a few feet high. Difficult ground and partial cover.
Kadrian Deverin |

Since the first round was a surprise round, not a normal one, do you want us to continue to follow the initative order as posted, or since the first round is over, we may act as we post?
Bendoc |
Rak,
I just logged into roll 20 and it shows that you are logged in (your icon is present). If you haven't tried it yet log out and log back in.
Also, you didn't have to move to attack the goblins so you have a move action left.
Rak Opal |
Thanks for the update Bendoc. Roll20 definitely won't show me the map (on my phone) until either I or Many-Faced pay for an account, so I'm not going to see that regardless. But having a move action is oh-so-helpful, regardless!
Izbela Vauni |
If your phone's browser has a feature that lets you request a desktop version of websites, you should be able to see the map using that. Works for me on my tablet, anyway.
Rak Opal |
Yup, that worked. It's not perfect (can't see much of the map at a time, and the user icons hover over the map), but it does work. Thanks!
Rak Opal |
This battle is becoming an existential crisis for Rak. He gave up a comfortable (and lucrative) career as a silversmith for this. At what point do you have to decide you're just not any good at what you want to do?
Kadrian Deverin |
Rak, don't feel bad. Kadrian nearly made a bad situation worse by telling the townsfolk to run to their homes. Not great advice from one of Sandpoint's young nobles. Plus, Kadrian could die in his first goblin invasion. We all must stumble before we can walk. We're 1st-level characters. We can get better.
Rak Opal |
Oh, don't worry. I'm having fun with it. I'm just having a remarkable string of really bad rolls. *Usually* it's a bit more balanced.
Rak Opal |
I think you must be right; he clearly has not had enough ale today. He will start earlier tomorrow and drink faster.
Izbela Vauni |
Lol! Yes, that's exactly what I meant. Looking forward to seeing your luck turn around, though. Rak deserves his time to shine, too.
Kadrian Deverin |
I gotta say, so far, this adventure and party are super fun. It's great to play with such good rp-ers. Great characters and personalities!
Akuleh Speaks With Ancients |
Agreed 1000%! I'm still kind of finding Akuleh's "voice," but I'm having a lot of fun with all the other characters while I'm figuring that out.
