Tieren - not sure on that, but I'll take a look.

EVERYONE: I'm perfectly OK with you all using iplay4e to keep track of powers and whatnot, but I'd be grateful if you could make sure that defenses, passives, any AP actions (i.e what effects they have on you and others), HP and surges are kept in your Paizo profiles for quick reference.

Also, it is your responsibility to keep track of HP and surges. I need to be able to find out fast if someone has dropped or is close to bloodied, particularly if I end up playing any of you for a turn.

Apologies. This is a new adventure for a pre-existing group. I do already have seven players, but if you'd like to be put on the alternates list, I'd be happy to do that.

Works for me.

the thrall concept sounds great, my druid is a mix of melee and ranged, but mostly medium distance

Thrallherd seems like the most overtly evil Paragon Path. Not sure I'd be comfortable in a group with it.

M Goliath Cleric 14 / Storm Speaker / Druid

Profile up, without rituals or components yet.

But... in answer to your question, the thrall is proficient with whatever melee weapon you arm it with. Yep, that means fullblade a-go-go for your mindwiped slave! :D

btw i get raise dead ritual for free, so no need to buy it

M Goliath Cleric 14 / Storm Speaker / Druid

Thanks, detritus.

Human

Re Thrallherd, I'd like to know how you would plan to use it. Do you intend to grab some hapless bod off the battlefield or what? Or you just stroll around with a brainwashed servant in tow? Either sounds a bit morally dodgy to me, but I'd like to know a bit more before I get heavy handed :)

EDIT: Also - morality aside - there are reasons that taking Thrallherd as a PP might make your life a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

Rituals and wish lists

Can you all concoct wish lists for me please. Up to level 17 would be good to start with. Put them somewhere accessible on the off-chance that I might get around to providing you with some treasure.

Well Its really just an alternate build that Im playing with, I wouldn't dream of running it until I had something fleshed out for the storyline of it to make it not evil, my character is not going to be evil by any means. I do see that it is a VERY complicated build as the normal rules of summons/pets what have you, totally dont apply and it goes by its own ruleset!

Human

It does, but if you can find a way to make it run that works for you and isn't squickily evil, I'm fine with it. Honest.

There are good in game reasons why it might make your life ... interesting ... is probably the best way to describe it. Not necessarily in a bad way, but interesting :)

Silver Crusade

Male Celestial Cleric of Myself 10/Radiant Servant of Me 10

Indeed... While Nayce is the type to "do what it takes" to thwart a greater evil, he would probably have a beef with mental enslavement. It would need some very creative reflavoring.

The Exchange

M

You could play with the idea that your character and your thrall work like Hodor and Bran out of the Game of Thrones books. Basically you are acting as the brains for something very stupid and very loyal.

You get all the mechanics of the Thrallheard without the "Evil" assiciated with it. I don't have the Thrall heard rules (I don't think so at anyrate) so haven't read this to see if it will meld, but it sounds like the type of thing that may work.

Rev - I've started to respec Greeg a little. I can't find a way to make his attacks much higher than 17 though, at least not with the character builder i have.

I did swap out some feats as you suggested, and also one of my Paragon feats for another Paragon feat that means I don't provide combat advantage when flanked. Probably a good feat since I'm going to be defending and marking as many bad guys as I can.

I'll keep tooling him and send you the file again when I'm done.

Turns out I won't be able to use the Iplay4e sight, since my work blocks it and I will most likely check from work occasionally to update in a timely fashion. Hope you don't mind me just using this forum and my alias to keep track of things.

Cheers

Human

The Fionovar series has a similar thing. Magician/Source are a unit and it is mutual arrangement. Rather like a human familiar with a strong mental bond, but they're two independent people.

Wrath - iplay4e is not compulsory at all. As long as I can get access to all your pc details, I'm happy. The no CA feat sounds like a great one for Greeg, as he's going to marking everything in sight and wreaking havoc in the middle if I know anything about wardens. +17 should be fine.

I am wondering whether to use inherent boni (bonuses?) for this one? Would anyone have any objections?

I'd be in favor.

Female Wood Elf Cleric / 3

Inherent bonuses are fine with me, usually that means little to no equipment though right?

Human

Not really. You can still have equipment and use it just fine. The thing about the inherent bonus system is that you need the equipment less as your defenses and attack improve automatically as you go up in level.

In general you wouldn't be as effective as you would be with good kit and a +3 sword will always top a +2 bonus to attack from a basic bonus, but even if you drop everything you own down a well, you'd still be quite functional.

Nice, I do like that. This my druid not quite done yet, still need to do his equipment and settle one daily. I love my bear.

Inherent bonuses sounds fine. They're something I actually really like the idea of, since it means magic items don't have to get picked for their plus - you can keep the flaming sword you're famous for even if it's bonus isn't up to par at your current level.

Can I ask, will returning characters (Guldarin, in my case) be allowed a certain amount of retraining? There are one or two powers of Guldarin's I never use which I'd like to swap out. Maybe for more summons ;-)

Human

Exactly. It favours flavour over power, which I like - despite my suggestions to Wrath on his goliath.

Yes, of course feel free to retrain Guldarin. At this rate he'll have an entire angelic choir at his disposal. Swordy, Amy, who next?

Celestial, if you would like to retrain Nayce, do feel free.

The Exchange

M

Inherent bonuses are fine with me Rev. Play by Post games are more about character development than number crunching for me, which means I may make decisions based on character flavour rather than best option. However, it's hard to develop a character when he's dead hehe. So any steps you guys feel necessary to help us in that direction would be great.

My work load is pretty huge over the next week, so I'll be a little longer in getting Greeg sorted. Holidays after that though, so I'll have plenty of time then to sort him and his back sotry out in more detail.

Cheers

Introducing Dram Rao.

I was born in a poor farming community on the edge of a large marshland. My parents were farmers and peat gatherers. I spent the majority of my years wondering the forests and swamps and doing everything I could to neglect the farmwork. My friends were the plants and the animals.

My first companion was a large brown bear which I affectionally named Dust for her habit of rolling in the peat moss and getting covered in the powdery stuff. After her untimely death to hunters, her mate Dirt (named for his yellow brown color that tried clay takes on) and I went on a spirit quest to find out what become of the cubs. Unfortuantely for us her cubs had been taken by the hunters. Dust decided to stay with her mate and I and we are in a never ending search for the cubs.

We have met many companions along the way and now are seen frequently in the company of a Giant Toad named Scuttlebutt and a Giant Crocodile named Muck.

I'm sorry, but Tazi will have to chase the big score in the city (that sounds dodgy now) this time.

Real life is a bit tough at the moment, so I can't take on a new game

Human

Understood. If you want back in at a later date, let me know.

Zero - if you'd like to, you are called upon as first alternatre. Go and roll something.

The Exchange

M

hmmm we've got a balanced set of characters so far, I have wanted to try out a Rogue myself, and since Fabes was going that route, I'll see what I can do.

While I do need to get my char made asap, what's the deadline for entry?

Male Human Rogue/Daggermaster 14

Heh heh, ole Don is ready for some treasure skulkin'. Desc and such will be up within the week I hope.

Char sheet is also up, my first time with a rogue in 4E, not quite as comfortable as with a Defender, so feel free to give it the look over.

As is standard here apparently, there's a break in the link. Dunno why.

Also if anyone recognizes that name, yes, its that guy. ^_X

Human

Zero - there's no immediate rush. For one thing, Nayce and Guldarin are still locked in a life or death struggle with Mammon. I'm looking at October, realistically.

In the meantime I'll take a look at your chap and I'm sure others will too.

Male Human

Rev. Sorry to butt in, but if there are any alternate spots, I'd love to be included in one! I'm good with any role and any race that fits the group...

(the current Hadarai from Fabes' Sleeper)

Human

You're not butting in at all and I'll gladly put you on the alternates list :)

Male Goliath Warden - Stoneblessed

Ok, I've updated all the mechanical components for Greeg. I won't be able to work on background and personality till next weekend, when i get to holidays.

If folks could go over his stats and see if I've worked things out ok.

I broke the defenses down to what they appear on the character sheet. I can't work out why my ref and AC got a +4 misc bonus though.

I think my character builder is giving me +4 for the shield rather than +2, it may explain the -2 that appears in the builder Rev.

Anyhow, if anyone else figures it out let me know. I'll go over my books in more detail when I get more time and am less tired.

Cheers

The Exchange

M

Well I went through and manually calculated the AC and Ref scores for Greeg. Seems that I was getting a random +2 somehwere in there from the char gen. My scores seem right now.

I see his role as being the point man to some extent. His job will be to grab as many foes as possible in the first round or two, then hold them there. His abilities are all about slowing folk and making them hit him. When he hits a slowed foe, it's going to hurt them too.

Of course, he doesn't have the armour class that a Paladin or Fighter can pull off, so he may be a little fragile. Some of his feats and powers give him better defenses, particularly in damage reduction. Guess we'll see how he plays out. This will be my first time playing a character in 4th edition for nearly two years. This time I know the rules a little better though so I'm hoping to do OK.

Cheers

Human

He's a warden. That means he is super sticky and very hard to affect with anything that is a save ends - Font of Life is one of the most potent class features. I don't think he'll be that fragile as you've picked powers that give you a lot of resistance.

He's also likely to be shoulder to shoulder with Kevaras the paladin much of the time (Lay on Hands is melee touch).

Greeg looks good to me - I'm looking forward to seeing him in action. Well, kind of :D I've had wardens in play before and they always make my life very miserable. "Oh, great. My monsters are slowed and can't shift to the end Greeg's next turn. So much for the mass charge I had planned ..."

At the moment I'm looking at +6 (half level) +3 (hide armour) +3 (enhancement) +3 (earthhide) +2 heavy shield for AC 27 normally, AC 28 until someone hits you thanks to your shield

Your hammer expertise will have an additional effect now, thanks to errata -

Bludgeon Expertise
Benefit: You gain a +1 feat bonus to weapon attack rolls you make with a hammer or a mace. This bonus increases to +2 at 11th level and +3 at 21st level.
You also gain a +1 feat bonus to the number of squares you push or slide creatures with weapon attacks you make with a hammer or a mace.

Sorry, Rev, you know me! ;)

Human

Joy to the world. A warden who shoves people around. Probably into the arms of one of our other devastating melee bods. Just what I needed :D

The Exchange

M

Fabes, if you have any thoughts for me, i'm all ears. I also have considered playing a support character, warlord or bard or something. So if anyone feels that something needs more support, i'll happily change up

The Exchange

M

Thanks for the info on the hammer Fabes.

As to AC, my breakdown was -10 (base) + 6 (half level) + 3 (hide armour) + 4 (con mod from class ability guardian might) + 3 (enhancement from armour) + 2 (shield) = 28

Earthhide only provides a +1 to fort I believe.

The shield provides an AC and Ref boost of +1 until I'm hit for the first time (doesn't have a description as to what type of bonus, but my gut instinct is item bonus?)

The armour provides a +2 AC item bonus on the first attack against me (Darkleaf component of armour). Note the difference between the two is - one is until hit, the other until attacked.

If indeed the shield is meant to be item bonus as well, then I'll look to change either it or the darkleaf part of the armour. I'll take a DM's call on that (or anyone with access to errata material that I don't have of course).

If the errata'd info from the hammer stands, then my attacks go up by 1 but I don't have too many push or slide abilities that trigger off the hammer. Still useful to know though.

I'm tempted to restart my subscription, but then my old builder will update to not being able to use off line. A conundrum.

Cheers

The Exchange

M

any chance you can put the old char builder on a flash drive or such for safe keeping then?

Wrath wrote:

A subscription shouldn't change or update your old builder. I do most of the work in the old builder ('cause it's still a bit faster) then import to the new builder for the newer feats and the extra power card info for iPlay4e.

Human

Likewise. I have the old one stashed on my pc and use it for basic building before importing into the new one. Wow, that sounds so much more complex than it actually is.

How's everyone doing?

There's no urgency at all, I just wouldn't want any of you to think I didn't care :)

Male Dwarf Invoker/Divine Philosopher 14

Guldarin is somewhat displeased. "Excuse me, devil, but when you were growing up... I assume devils do grow up, at least somewhat, since you come in all sorts of sizes and shapes although come to think of it so do other intelligent species, I mean I'm a lot smaller than Rusty and a rather different shape too, anyway where was I ah yes, when you were growing up didn't anyone tell you that it's not nice to play with other people's toys until you're invited to. Now leave my rod alone unless you want me to hex you into a shape that won't get you invited to any of the devilish bachelor parties."

The Exchange

M

I have the old one stored as two files (original install and zipped updates). I can always put it somewhere. I'll consider the renewed subsciption soon, if for no other reason than downloading all the dungeon and dragon content again. I have sooooo many modules I can run with my group, but there's no such thing as too many.

We're currently running the Scales of War, but I'm finding I have to modify the plot fairly heavily to make more logical sense and tie my players characters to the game more.

Any of you others try this one at all. Some great combats in there.

Cheers

Human

Gosh. That's the most upset I've ever heard Guldarin :D

We played the first chapter of Scales of War and I'd like to go back to it - possibly as a GM.

I'm always doubtful about starting a whole AP in a pbp format - the timescale is so huge that continents move faster. Even so, it is tempting, particularly with some pruning and changing up. How are you finding it Wrath?

Wrath wrote:

That reminded me of a wiki that I'd bookmarked that might help with that.

The battles seem to be really well balanced. I like the underlying plot, but the individual magazine scenarios don't gel seamlessly together. Not like a paizo AP.

We've seen two character deaths and we're at level 8. Both of those were with only three players present though, and may be more a result of balance issues with encounter modification on my part.

The biggest thing I like about it all is that it saves me tons of time. 4th is easier to dm as it is, but running an AP is even better. The most I have to do usually is modify plot elements to make things gel better. And I also usually run the skill challenge sections like I traditionally run investigations etc in pathfinder. Far more ad lib in those sections.

It's getting better as the levels increase as well. Very interesting combats.

Cheers

Male Goliath Warden - Stoneblessed

Been quiet here for a bit. Guess everyone's busy trying not to die in Rev's games :)

I wrote up some personality stuff for Greeg. Haven't done much background stuff yet, I'll wait for some more input from Rev and others on why we're all going on this thing before getting carried away with that side of things.

Anyhow, here's some more for the big man.

Personality

Greeg was big. Everything about him was oversized and he often found himself breaking things built for smaller hands and lighter bodies. At times it caused the big Goliath some embarrassment, but most times he just laughed it off and joked about the fragility of timber and pottery.

"You need to build from stone, people! It has roots, does stone. Goes all the way down. You can't break a stone cup just trying to pick it up. Stone benches don't bow under the weight of one such as me."

He could feel stone, like some felt the breath in their lungs, or wind through their hair. His bones yearned for it, his soul felt satisfied when he was surrounded by it. Weathered stone, the chill of deep stone, and the warmth of new formed stone. All of these were what formed Greeg's world and his view of it.

Stone could be silent, but Greeg was made for combat and defense. He preferred the noise of the deep chambers, where the magma roared and the stones cracked. There was something primal about those chambers, formative and raw. He regularly spoke in volumes that echoed those chambers, loud and raw and raucous.

He fought his combats with these things in mind. Implaccable, unyielding and solid. He was a bastion behind which others could stand, safe in the knowledge that all would crash and break against their companion like the oceans did on the Sea walls of the Southern Nations. He roared and beat his shield, he laughed at the sound of his hammer blows and screamed his triumph when all the foes were felled. There were those who whinced at his noise, at his sheer size and the apparent clumsiness of Greeg, but he was who he was. No one complained when the fights were over and their enemies lay dead at his feet.

Human

They are having quite a harsh ride at the moment in almost everything, I must admit :)

I love the description of Greeg.

In the interests of keeping the creation process ticking over, I'll post up some background a few reasons you might be where you're going to be. Probably tomorrow now.

A few questions for you all (mixed bag, some mechanics stuff, some character stuff):

How to you feel about giants? Hate them, feel they're maligned, any previous dealings with them?

Do any of you know each other? It seems plausible to me that in a group this large you'd know at least one person reasonably well. Maybe more.

Are there any past adventures you've been on (with or without any of the characters here) that you remember particularly? The reasons for that could be good or bad.

Give some thought to wishlists. As we will be using the inherent bonus system, you can pick stuff that appeals rather than stuff that you really need to remain effective. This won't be a low magic, low item campaign, but I am notoriously bad at providing treasure and when it comes, it tends to arrive glittering, apologetic heaps.

Rituals. Who can cast them and what sort of things do you have? I recommended you making a communal pool to pay for anything you feel you will need and still think that is a good idea.

At the moment I'm trying to get a feel for what sort of party this is so I can play up the aspects of the adventure what will interest you and your characters.

The Exchange

M

okay about inherent bonuses, we need to select armor and weapons that give no bonuses right, or does the CB automatically override the equipment except for the features of the weapons?

Male Drow Protecting Paladin 14 / Hospitaler
Zerombr wrote:

If you choose stuff with no bonuses you'll get the inherent bonus to AC, Defences, Attack, and Damage, though you should consider masterwork armour. If you equip a magic item for a particular slot, the CB gives you either the magic item's enhancement bonus or your inherent bonus, whichever is better.

Now let's segue into the issue of critical hit dice. I've heard that in the rules in the Dark Sun Campaign Setting differ from the version in the DMG2, in that, inherent bonuses apply to the critical property of magic weapons too. So does that mean a weapon like a distance javelin that normally doesn't give extra damage dice on a crit, will be given extra damage dice equal to the enhancement bonus granted by the inherent bonus system?
