I did. I didn't note it in the spoiler, but I did. The thing rolled a natural 17, unfortunately.

I believe the issue is that if he's trying to hit both elementals, he's going to have to be closer to them by 5'. The burning hands spell is only a 15' cone. That means from his current position, he can only hit one. If he were to move SW 5', he'd still only be able to hit one.

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

Wow, I was completely ignorant of that rule associated with cover. Thanks Ceinwynn. :) I have moved him to a position where he will get both, miss Pel, and be in cover from Huge Table. Ignore that 10 damage, you lucky gnome, you.
Edit: thanks for putting that 15'cone on the map. Apparently counting is hard for me... I think we're only holding on Noro now.

Noro seems concerned with finding this wizard. she starts to search the area she last saw him, looking for signs as to where he went.

yeah I know its like impossible to find him, but with all of her potential targets removed, she could advance on the last small elemental but that would be a waste of time as it would be gone before she could do anything. and the big one are nothing more than BBQ pits to make some flame broiled Noro.

Noro:
The ground shows no sign of the mage's retreat that you can detect, but your search of the surrounding books reveals The Books of Blood - This collection of spellbooks appears to have belonged to a necromancer named Pogrist the Great. Penned neatly on bleached vellum in what is purportedly his own blood, these leather bound tomes describe the wizard's research of blood magic and necromancy in many strange lands, treatises justifying this pusuit of forbidden knowledge, the fates of various mentors and later apprentices, and his eventual ascension to lichdom to extend his tenure indefinitely.
The spells themselves have been significantly and apparently unsuccessfully altered by the mage you are seeking if the meandering notes and scribbled curses in the margin are any indication. You could probably learn some information about the mage and his methods if you had a few minutes to study this book.

The right Elemental strikes at Pel and misses. He retaliates and manages to hit it again with his claws, but the flames are becoming just too much. The left elemental swings at the tanned human causing so much trouble and connects (for 4 damage and the save).

Pelgrev retreats a step and shouts at Ariana who casts a spell under the elementals. An area of slick grease coats the ground! The right elemental manages to keep his feet, but the left stumbles. You never thought you'd see fire fall, but there it goes!

[ooc]Freia up (and then everyone else). Left elemental is prone. Freia - The elemental's essences start to flicker slightly. They are now entering the Fighting off Death range of their hitpoints (more than 4 but below 1/3 hp).

Note: Burn (Ex)

A fire elemental deals fire damage in addition to damage dealt on a successful hit in melee. Those affected by the burn ability must also succeed on a Reflex save or catch fire, taking the listed damage for an additional 1d4 rounds at the start of its turn. A burning creature can attempt a new save as a full-round action. Dropping and rolling on the ground grants a +4 bonus on this save. Creatures that hit a burning creature with natural weapons or unarmed attacks take fire damage as though hit by the burning creature and must make a Reflex save to avoid catching on fire (see Burn universal monster ability for complete details.)

Round 4 (3 for Freia)

Friea whines in fear as the flames continue to lick her skin. But she could not, would not, cover in fear. She sensed the life departing from the elemental - and it was time to put out the fire! Resolutely, she stepped up to the raging inferno and drove her frosty blade straight into it. Arcane power gave her accuracy and speed, for no sooner then the first blow struck a spell was on her lips and the sword soared downwards again.

A glance was given to the group that was fighting the larger elementals, but they seemed to have things in hand enough that Halsanna fired another pair of arrows at the smaller elemental that was busy setting fire to the books that had accumulated here. "Sims! Do we have a plan for containing the fire?" There had been four smaller elementals that were starting to burn things, and if they took too long to put them out, the entire library stood a chance of going up in flames, which would be a poor end to their investigation.

It also would have been nice if they had an acquisitions team following behind them, but thanks to paperwork being what it was, she knew that opportunity was something that was a faint hope at this point.

You find Gideon Mithrilpot’s Adventurers’ Cookbook, Anniversary Edition – a famous work from a now-deceased adventuring chef, which includes the recipes to properly cook naturally dangerous and venomous creatures such as wyverns and gorgons. Gives a +4 insight bonus to Profession (Chef) when used to prepare “exotic” foods (loosely defined as anything “uncommon” or “rare” for a knowledge DC check). Includes autograph that reads “Thanks for not eating ME! -G. Mithrilpot”
This book's pages are especially worn around the chapters concerning magical pots, pans, and cauldrons. Perhaps the Mage was trying to distill some insight in the containment vessel for his own Well, or perhaps the one he found and is now trying to activate. Either way, this book may be helpful.

"Sims!" There had been enough light for Halsanna to see from where she was, especially from where she had been firing the arrows, and she shot a pair off, hitting the shelves just under the books that she was talking about. "Take those two books as well!"

Mezzen releases another blast of freezing cold at the monster and, finally, gets lucky. The blast impacts the things center mass and it writhes in anguish. Seeing a window of opportunity, the lithe half-elf leaps from the balcony and dashes at the monster. A single swing of her deadly curved blade tears the elemental asunder and it vanishes in a wave of heat.

Zayid also lands his hit to the sorely disabled one, bringing it much closer to death. Ariana casts, but the spell is resisted. The elemental struggles to get up. Zayid sees it's rise and ends it with a single, mighty downward stroke. The guidarme's curved blade sunders the elemental's core just as Ms. Davenport's did to it's companion. It too screeches before bursting in a wave of heat.

Combat over except for that little one which Aboki and Halsanna will down shortly. Feel free to make your saves to put the fires on people out, then I need actions to try to forestall the growing inferno in which you currently find yourselves standing.

With one more of the smaller elementals to go, Halsanna took careful aim and let an arrow fly, accounting for the actions of the animal companion. The fires were going to take some time to put out, but water was something that was not easily on hand, unless someone could summon water elementals.

As soon as the fire elemental goes down Freia drops prone and tries to put out the fire licking her clothes and skin. After a few seconds of frantic kicking and rolling, the flames finally dies down and she mewls a sigh of relief. She lays down for a few seconds more, with her eyes shut, just breathing deep breaths before she feels collected enough to sit up. Fire. Why must everything be or turn into fire?! As she stood up she looked around, gathering her thoughts as well as her wits.

"Let's start by clearing a fire road - to stop it from spreading!"

First we prevent it from gaining more fuel ...

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

The last small elemental goes down with a squeak and a puff of smoke.

'We're losing time on this, but we can't let the library burn!'[/i] Halsanna stowed her bow, and set to putting out the nearest fire. She was wondering how much information in this place was going to be lost once they got everything settled, but sorting through all of this was not something that she wanted to be doing, if she had to be honest. [b]"The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can pursue the firebug that started this!", she shouted, hastening her efforts.

When she got an opportunity, she moved closer to Mezzen and nudged him. "Think you can send off a message to the Chief once we get this under control? They might want to get started on making sense of these books as soon as possible?"

She also wanted to get closer to one of the tears to ask about the one that had helped her in the last fight. She owed him a favor, and she at least wanted to make sure that got conveyed.

As soon as the elemental is disposed of, Zayid falls to the ground and rolls around, intent on putting out the fire as soon as possible. After a few seconds he manages to get it out, but not before the flames do more harm. Once the fire is out he takes a few ragged breaths before shaking his head and trying to move to help the others. Not sure how many "rounds" of actions we have -- I just used two. :)

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

Freia's magic does a lot to quench the fires on the left and then Zayid joins her. In general, you are making progress. Halsanna leads the charge on the right and the hands on that side manage to stem the tide of flame.

Will make a more substantial update later today.

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

Halsanna's book checks from earlier:
2d458 ⇒ (225, 103) = 328
The first you spot, and tell Kalaam to grab is Your Best Friend's Diary, a plain looking book with an easily opened lock that is enchanted with detect thoughts and fills in the pages with your own memories about "your friend".
Known to cause trouble by confirming the readers worst fears. Hopefully, this book still contain's the mages'.

The second is the valuable Chronicle of Croniclers. It is a thick, heavy book bound in worn leather and is a copy of the names of all Pathfinder Society Pathfinder Chroniclers and their accomplishments. How it managed to get out of Absolom is a mystery. It is a surprisingly good read and provides details on many exotic locales that used to be rather dangerous, but might be worth a visit now. Just seeing a copy of it here made your heart skip a beat.
I actually contributed #103 to the resource I'm using for these books. :)

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

You are able to quench the flames with several minutes of exhausting work. Many books are severely damaged, but your wisdom in switching to the smaller elementals has saved many valuable tomes.

The center table turns out to be where most of the solid information is kept. You are definitely dealing with a Thassalonian Wrath mage here and he is extremely close to finishing the activation of his Well.
He has an accomplice, however. A certain raven haired lady who recently set up a fake boating company as cover to commit several docklands murders. In fact, you find evidence among his diary and several half-burned records that links him or his lady friend to every one of the famous Docklands Murders.

Most importantly, however, you manage to find a map. There are two areas that must be struck simultaneously in order to shut down the ritual. The upper Focus Chamber and the lower Pool. It is likely that the mage is in the upper chamber. The female, being the warrior of the two, could be anywhere.

Sweating and breathing heavily, Halsanna regrouped with the others around the center table, wiping her brow with the back of her forearm. "Water Arrows ought to be something I should be able to carry." Gathering herself, she took stock of the group, and gained a thoughtful look. Making sense of what she was seeing took her a bit, but as they sifted through it, more and more of the picture was made clear. What it was, however, was not something that she liked.

"Oh great.." squinting slightly, she was getting a good look at them, and puzzling out who would have to go where. "..Am I the only ranged individual?" One hand went to a pouch on her Bandolier, and retrieved a Thunderstone, setting it gently on the table. "If your group doesn't have anything to deal with the mage, feel free to take that. It might come in handy."

Other than her offering, she was looking at the others, trying to figure out who might best go where.

@Halsanna - do you remember which Tear that helped you? I tried to find it, but I couldn't locate that part : )

@Tactics - The three Tears left are all bruisers and melee, with protection and skills geared towards disabling other melee (Trip, Str/Dex/to hit penalties and Noro's fists) while your group seems to lack melee prowess (one mage, one archer and only one meatshield/drunk) - so it seems more natural for us to deal with the physical threats while you deal with the mage!

Thoughts? Perhaps we want to make it exciting and mix it up :P?

@Tears/Choon - I'll detract 2 charges of the wand for Freia (better top us off!) and 3 for Zayid. Noro - are you hurt? And how many does Pel need?

I'll try and get a meatier post up later today!

When the fire finally dies down Freia sobs in relief and sits down again. She brushed the soot away from her face and clothes and took a healthy sip from her water bottle before taking a look around and for the first time taking actual stock of the situation. We have some allies, and we know where to head and put an end to this. That is good ... But first, their wounds needed to be tended to if they were to make it further. She retrieved the wand and used it first to close her own wounds - then stood up and headed over to heal Zayid. Then there was time to decide what to do.

From behind the still silver mask Freia took a good look at the other team before responding. She recognized a pair of them, but the others where new. Mercenaries are short-sighted, no doubt. she guessed. Clearing her throat she looked up at the half-elf. "You seem to be the only archer - yes." Then the alchemical weapon - hesitating for a moment before picking it up. No sense in declining well-intentioned aid. "We have other ways to deal with a mage, but another option never hurts!"

A bit more searching and fitting the mage's plan together reveals that the Mage has been laying traps and misinformation in his own documents! Both sites must still be attacked to shut things down, but they need not be struck simultaneously. In fact, due to the maddening waves of fury that emanate from the well, it may be wise to not split your forces.

I'll move on the the next stage of this extravaganza after a couple reactions/realizations/any planning youall wish to do with the little bit you have uncovered.

Freia spends some time pondering over the maps and diagrams, trying to make heads and tails of it all while the wand worked its magic. Speaking of magic, she gives the room a quick sweep with Detect Magic in case there would be any residual clues - or trinkets that could help them. Under that excuse, she also takes a moment to glance at the books to see if any deal with the planes (she hadn't been in such a well stocked library since she was five, and her own heritage interested her) or anything that looked like a good read. The tranquil feeling of browsing books in a lavish library helped sooth her frayed nerves and when she returned she actually felt calm. Time to put an end to this then.

"Noro, if you get a good grip of either of the pair - you should be able to keep them down, right ? I can slow down the fighter with my spells to rein her in..."

And, with detect magic,

The Man. The Myth. The Mask!

The journal reveals what most casters fear: grappling. He has turned to summons mostly because he wants things to tear grapplers off him.

The party proceeds down the dark, damp tunnels. Once out of the library the stone turns back to the old worked stone of the sewer tunnels outside the arcane doors. Only by following the directions on your pieced together map do you avoid calamity. The tunnels are full of deadly traps and pitfalls, some still containing the remains of unfortunate tunnel vermin. Waves of fury and confusion roll over you as you get closer and they become harder and harder to resist. There are a few altercations as one or another of you looses their cool, but it quickly passes.
After many tense minutes of walking, you come upon signs of activity. A dull red light is coming from the window of a iron door at the end of a particularly damp and putrid tunnel.

Zayid will tap Aboki with lead blades just before we go in.

Exhaling slowly as she settled into a workable mental space, Halsanna switched hands with the bow to wipe her sweaty palm off on one of her pant legs. The effects of the Runewell was not something that she liked, especially as it tested her self-control. She had to focus. Losing control was not something that she wanted to do, especially since she was the only physical ranged support for this entire group. Mentally, she found herself making a litany out of the steps for what they were about to encounter.

'Ground any non-allies. Defend back row. Assess situation. Repeat.'

This is it!

The ominous red light in the distance indicated that the ritual was close. And active...

Catching Up:

The quiet elf, as usual, has little interaction beyond murmurs of awe for the magical prowess shown by the more experienced Sorrows. As the door's wards fade and she steps within, her eyes light up with glee at the treasure of books within. The look quickly turns to displeasure at the elementals wreaking havoc and she throws herself into the fray, spraying magic from her fingertips.

At the end of the battle, she walks through the shelves, touching the spines of rare texts she recognizes but seeing nothing that would help with the current situation. She glances over Freia's shoulder at the book and raises an eyebrow. ”Summoning. Cute.”

The traps, pitfalls and rats evoke no response from the cold wizard. Her expression hidden behind the mask, she speaks rarely and is cold toward the city watch. After the arguments from their previous encounter, she had no desire to thank them for their help—much less speak to them, at least for the moment.

Of course, with the Runewell's powerful emotional waves, much of Ariana's coldness was a shield. She could feel fury at the city watch assisting them. Fury with her companions for little, mild disagreements in the past. Fury with the city for putting her in this position and, more than any other, fury for whoever summoned the elementals to burn the library.

A red light? Ominous...and cliché. They know we are coming, we should hit them hard and do it quickly. Focus on high priority targets first, we don't want anyone escaping who will cause trouble.

Stepping closer to Zayid, Ariana slides a scroll from her satchel. ”I've been saving this for a prepared situation. Now seems a good time.” She casts Magic Weapon on Zayid's guisarme, enchanting it to +1 for 1 minute.

"Cliché... " Now that she mentioned it, Erol *shudder* did actually employ plenty of red light too." "I hope it isn't merely a trap or distraction."

Whenever the time comes to do so, Freia will approach the door cautiously and as quietly as she can manage.

She will also take the time to read one of her Shield scrolls

Zayid will go ahead and tap himself with lead blades too.
