Kingmaker Table 1

Seleste:
The Lord Mayor already knows of you and your skills since you're a local and has asked you to come and wait in the private dining room of the Champion Inn for him. Also, you and Tika likely know each other, she's a barmaid at the Champion Inn.

Tika:
During your time working as a barmaid at the Champion Inn, the Lord Mayor has taken note of your skills, and has let you know about Seleste (you can read her spoiler) ahead of time and that he's going to be picking the three remaining members of the expedition. You are also in on the twin-switch explained below.

The din at the Champion Inn has died to a low hum of conversation and bard music. The patrons are not sharing laughs and drinks this night by coincidence. No, the people here have come in search of purpose, fame, fortune, and redemption. They had heard word that the Lord Mayor of Restov was to choose a group to send out into the Greenbelt, a previously unsettled stretch of land in Brevoy, and tame it on behalf of the Throne. When they came into town throughout the day, they'd all been pleased to find that the Lord Mayor was offering complementary drinks at the Champion Inn for those interested.
It wasn't long after the last of them entered the inn that the conversation turned to where their benefactor was, and how he would choose those he would send.
Not long after that, a middle-aged man, visually of Chelish descent with the stature of a king and some of the finest clothes any of the patrons had seen, entered the inn followed by a pair pikemen in matching armor. Some of the patrons recognize the pikeman on the right as the bartender, whipping their necks back, they see that they are indeed identical twins. It seems whilst the patrons have been talking the two have been trading places and reporting back to this new well-dressed man. The bartender's twin then announces the man before him, "His honor and lordship, the Mayor of Restov, Lord Ioseph Sellemius."
With a slightly embarrassed smile, the Lord Mayor uttered, "Thank you Matvey," under his breath before beginning.

"Lords, Ladies, Gentlemen, Gentlewomen, honored guests all," he began with an orator's eloquence, "I apologize for my tardiness, but my colleagues and I have been deliberating quite a bit over whom to charter for the task of taming and settling the Greenbelt. I'm happy to say we have come to an agreement." He produces a handful of envelopes sealed with wax with names written on the front, and using them for reference, continues "Would Baron Gage Garess, Hon Vitellia Orlovsky, Miss Tika Fairhaven, and Miss Mamise Iwani please join me in the next room, please." He gestures to a set of double doors across from the entrance that have remained closed thus far. "The rest of you are free to carry on for the rest of the night on my coin, and please keep an eye out for my courier in the future, as the troubles of Brevoy are far from few." With a smiling nod, the man walks through the parting crowd like a hand gently pushing water. His overt nobility makes him seem quite out of place among the rough and tumble crowd through which he mills, but his humility and benevolence are welcomed and respected by all who see him.

The guards circle around and open the doors, allowing the Lord Mayor and the four candidates into what seems to be a private dining room based on the ornate long wooden table the head at which the Lord Mayor seats himself. The other candidates file in after him and as they do, they notice a mysterious half-elven woman already seated whom the Lord Mayor introduces as Miss Seleste Talyn. The Lord Mayor hands the envelopes to Matvey and as the guard is passing them out, Lord Sellemius explains, "These are your charters, they bear my crest, and will serve as proof that you have authority to settle these lands should this fact be disputed. We've sent word of your duty ahead of you to Oleg's Trading Post which is about a day's ride..." he pulls some rolled-up leather out of his robes and unfurls it on the table; the candidates can see that it is a leather-bound map of Brevoy and the surrounding area "...west by northwest of here; and I recommend this is where you begin your journey. You are, of course, welcome to stay the night, gather your supplies, etc. All the same, I'd rather you didn't tarry too long before leaving in the morning. Are there any questions?"

Mamise, who has switched to her human form before Sellenius' arrival, gazes at the map, passing her finger over the assigned area. Forest area, bordering the Narlmarches swamp. We'll have to free some space for farms, set up some timber camps; the Thorn and Shrike Rivers will be great for moving logs and trading, both with Restov and Mivon. Not a bad location, all in all. And where is a forest there are bound to be fey, possibly powerful allies.
She raises her hands. "Three questions, Your Lordship, if I may. Do we know anything about bandit activity in the area, or the presence of dangerous creatures? How is the terrain, is there the chance to set up a stone quarry, or perhaps mine minerals? And finally, should we expect colonists incoming soon, or should we send word to the Trading Post once we have found a suitable area?"

Everything was moving so fast and all these people, the noise and the laughing was too much. She was glad for this quiet moment to collect herself.

She had come to Restov to seek help against the bandits. She had no idea that the Lord Mayor would be so receptive and had already called a gathering for just such an endeavor. It turns out the Lord Mayor know Selete's mother, or at least of her herbal lore in the Rostlands and also of her daughter that she was training. He expressed his regrets at their passing and asked her to wait in this quiet room. In a low voice she mutters, "That is good, right? Or is he keeping me apart from the grownups?....No I don't feel a grownup. Did you see them stare at me? Only the barmaid paid me any mind. Her and the dogs and was that a friendly wolf?....No, I don't care to project authority...what authority would that be anyway? She ends with a laugh just as the door opens.

Fully blushing, she sees the Lord Mayor return followed by a group including the barmaid. Self-consciously, Seleste straightens her long silver-white hair. Those entering, see a young woman of mixed Elven decent. She sits tall in her chair and seems rail thin but this is partially hidden by the large boiled leather cuirass that she wears that is obviously too big. The armor is covered in an intricately carved scroll-work pattern of leaves and flowers. The designs and style of the armor seem archaic, and as if to reinforce this, it's smooth surface appears puckered and peeling in places. The large wooden shield against the wall bears similar faded paint designs. Her large sword and spear bear leaf-shaped blades.

She uses the time the Mayor makes introductions to recenter her thoughts. When the one called Miss Iwani asks about bandits, Seleste blurts out without allowing the Mayor to answer, "Bandits are very active. Too much so." Suddenly realizing her place, "Sorry to interrupt Lord Mayor. I think that was some authority popping out."

Tika spends much of the night up until the Lord Mayor's appearance serving drinks, leaning over tables, and generally trying to earn some tips since the boys aren't spending money on the drinks themselves.
P:Barmaid: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

She knew she was going to be selected, but she had no compulsions about squeezing out a few more coins from the bar before she leaves. She smiles and gives winks and overall gives no indication she had any idea what's going to happen. People don't want their barmaids smart, so that was what she showed them.

When called to the back, she waited until the Lord Mayor entered the room before giving the boys one last wink and a bounce. "Sorry boys, I guess this is it for me! Come see me when I open up my own place, okay?" she giggles as she enters the room last and closes the door.

She listens to the Lord Mayor give out his directives and accepts his charter with a gracious smile and an inclination of her head that seems FAR too noble to be coming from a simple barmaid.

"While I have some, m'lord, it would appear that important questions have been asked, and mine were but simple curiosities." she replies with grace appropriate to talking to someone of the Lord Mayor's station. Gone is her boppy, cheerful, and somewhat dense barmaid persona and instead, you see her entreating with nobility like she knows what she's doing.

Kingmaker Table 1

The Lord Mayor smiles to Mamise after Seleste's outbursts and says, "Quite right, Seleste's mother and Oleg himself have reported on the bandits' activity; unfortunately the Throne can't seem to spare the manpower to help. Questions regarding monsters will be better directed to Oleg at the trading post. He's made complaints before, and he tells me he's set up a Wanted Board there with which the swordlords are apparently quite active. I'm not sure outside of that, I've never actually been myself, you see. As far as mining is concerned, I've not encountered anyone who's hinted at it, but the area is quite dangerous yet, so I'd imagine prospecting mines would not necessarily be at the top of anyone's priorities at the moment. For that same reason, yes I'm going to avoid encouraging colonization until you've sent word that a particular area is safe."

Tika:
Tika has earned Tips: 20d2 ⇒ (2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2) = 31 gp in tips during the wait.

The Lord Mayor tilts his head at Tika's comment, "By all means, curiosities can be deadly in this line of work, do ask."

Whoohoo! Tips!

Tika blushes slightly as he turns his attention to her. "M'lord, I only sought to understand what means we have to mark the territories we've cleared. After all, it's fine that we do this work for you, m'lord, but how shall we inform those we encounter the land is, as you say, freshly re-settled?"

She turns her gaze down to her feet. "I also wondered about information... do we have any reports of the area as of late, or are we going into the region blind? Were there any places of import we should look for?"

Vitellia was somewhat surprised to hear her name called, but nowhere near as surprised as she was at hearing Gage -that insufferable troubadour- be addressed as Baron Garess!

She gives Kirby a command to remain in the common room while she follows the others into the private space in the back. The hound initially whimpers and makes eyes at her, but she tosses him another piece of chicken and he forgets his grievance.

As they enter, Vitellia sidles up alongside Gage. "I've been to my fair share of Garess formal events yet I don't believe I've had the pleasure of making your acquaintance until tonight. You'll have to tell me where you've been all this time." She is smiling, but the edge of passive-aggression in her voice is clear.

Once inside, they are introduced to a Half-Elven woman and Sellemius goes over the basics of the expedition. When he queries the newly christened colonists about any concerns, she allows some of the others to speak before raising a question of her own.

"Exactly how beholden to Brevoy will we be? How much autonomy will our colony, assuming we successfully establish one, have from the Dragonscale Throne?"

Kingmaker Table 1

The Lord Mayor answers Tika, "It's really up to you how you get word back to to us, I'm sure you could hire the Brevic Courier to check in at Oleg's periodically, or if you're strapped for gold, there's an ever growing homeless population in New Stetven, I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to find a personal courier. As for going in blind, Oleg and his wife have been living in it and are much more informed than I which is why I recommended you start there."

In response to Vitellia, he answers, "The city states in Brevoy are fairly independent. Restov for instance pays a relatively small monthly tax in return for the promise that when called upon in times of war or other crisis, the Brevic army will come to our aid."

After hearing his name called, Gage Garess went to the other room with a demeanor that could easily be mistaken for solemnity, strongly contrasting his earlier frivolity. He was, however, speechless; for the second time in his life, and possibly not the last, Gage was lost for words.

Vitellia Orlovsky wrote:

Gage absentmindedly opens his mouth to answer, and, failing to find words, promptly closes it again.

Could it be he really believes me? I suppose I shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth…
Hearing the other’s questions seems to rouse Gage from his musing, and he half remembers Vitellia’s question. He whispers his response not-quite-quietly-enough
”I ah… sorry my mind was wandering for a moment, please ask me again later.”
Regaining some composure, Gage listens to the Lord Mayor before adding
”Ehem, you have my gratitude for recognizing my birthright, Lord Mayor. It sounds like we ought to head on over to Oleg’s place. Anyone object to turning in before long and resting up for tomorrow’s trip?”

Vitellia responds to the Mayor with a short nod of acknowledgement.

Better than I expected, she thought. I'm certain someone has their hand in this for political reasons. Likely several someone's now. Giving the fledgling colony the relative independence of a proper city-state is risky, as it will be harder to exert control over, but it also helps obfuscate whoever may be trying to play this endeavor from behind the scenes.

So, a bastard who wants to be legitimized, a kitsune in disguise, the daughter of an Orlovksy baron, a barmaid and a farm girl walk into a tavern... We are a joke. Well, alright, it won't be the first time I stake my life on a prank, and the reward looks oh, so succulent.
"Very well, Your Lordship. We shall claim that land and report in short time. Now, if you would excuse me, I believe that we should leave early tomorrow, so I would retire to my room."

Kingmaker Table 1

In response to Gage's gratitude, the Lord Mayor replies with a dismissive waive, "I knew your father. Not well, mind you, but we traveled in similar circles. The resemblance alone makes your claim irrefutable in my book. Unfortunately, my autonomy also restricts my say in such matters."

He nods to Mamise, then addresses the lot of them, "If there's nothing else, I'll retire as well, it's been a long day, and the Lady Sellemius doesn't suffer solitude well." He waits a moment for any last questions or thoughts before standing to leave.

Vitellia thanks the mayor with a bow.

"Indeed, we should retire while we can."

Turning to her companions: "I shall see you in the morning, then. Rest well, and avail yourselves of a hearty breakfast in the morning. I'm sure there is much adventure and derring-do in our future."

Tika smiles until the Lord Mayor is excused (and gone), and then lets out a sigh and rubs her cheeks and stretches her jaw.

"Ugh, holding that expression is such a pain!" she complains. "I forgot how much I hated smiling for the upper society."

She sits down, looking over the rest of the group, tilting her head quizzically. "What?" she asks, smiling suggestively. "I'm still the same gal who served your drinks out there... You're just seeing a little bit of the lady under the apron, so to speak."

A sullen Seleste asks Tika, "Why do you smile for them? It is hard enough being me, I can't afford to be someone else for 'other' people despite their urging." That last part was not directed at Tika personally, more a proclamation to the room.

Seleste gets to her feat and takes up her weapons along the wall, "There were already people living out there and along the border of the Rostland, homesteading, trapping, prospecting...colonizing as you all call it, has all come to an end. Focus on the Bandits, none of that comes back with the bandits growing bolder. When I can plow their bones into a new field, then we can talk of colonies."

"How was that for authority?" Seleste mutters under her breathe as she bends to retrieve her pack.

I have been trying to make Seleste mutter under her breath a lot while trying to use the 'smaller' text but having no luck. Just in this sentence 'smaler' should have been smaller. For now I just won't bold those conversations and someone can try to listen in if they desire.

Mamise sniggers at Tika's words, remembering her own time as a housemaid. After Seleste speaks, she looks at the half-elven girl, slightly frowning.
"Seleste - may I call you Seleste? I seem to understand that you come from the region we're heading towards, and I can see how you are worried about brigands. However, the problem of being someone else is-" she shifts to her foxfolk form "-slightly more complex. I'm no warrior, no seeker of glory against powerful foes, no devout champion of Iomedae." She assumes human guise again, her face serious except for the ever-present spark of mirth in her eyes.
"I will help you against the bandits, and I'll be glad to rid the land of them, but I wouldn't have answered the call, if not for the chance to settle, to start life anew. Please do not assume that we have some moral obligation to help you."

Seleste's face lights up at the change in Mamise and she even cracks a first smile you had seen from her. As she takes in the rest of Mamaise's words she nods and waits impatiently for her to finish. "What are you?", she asks in amazed wonder and follows that in a teen-aged rush. "Is that wizarding? Or is that really you? Is this you?" You're not fey, right?" Suddenly she freezes and a blush of shame enters her cheeks, "...alright...enough..." "I am sorry, that was rude. I should ask for your forgiveness...I mean, I ask for..." Seleste gives her head a shake like a gnat buzzed across her vision, but then continued in a more measured tone, "Please forgive me." She ends that with a small bow.

When she straightened she seemed to have found the point she wished to make, "I just meant being other people is not for me...I am just Seleste, and that is hard enough...If I could be someone else, I fear I might not come back as Seleste." She ends with her eyes having drifted down to her muddy and scuffed boots, "There is little to Seleste that you see before you, this armor, doesn't even fit, this spear and sword, too big, this shield too heavy, these holy symbols, this hair even. Everything that was me has been taken from me. So, I am sure your morals are fine and I'm not up on charters and ogblitions, I just wanted to say that when we invite people to follow us into this land, then it won't be my responsibility; it will be ours...that's all I meant" She looks up with moist eyes, "Sorry, I am just not good with words and strangers, but if we are to create a new home, I am glad you would fight at my side. I will fight beside you, whatever shape you choose."

Female Kitsune Oracle (Seer) 2 | HP 14/16 | AC: 15, T: 13, FF: 12 | Fort: +2, Ref: +3, Will: +4 | BAB: +1, CMB: +1, CMD: 15, M.Attack +1, R.Attack +4 | Init: +3 | Perception: +1

Mamise smiles kindly at Seleste. "Apology accepted, sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. I am not fae, but foxfolk, or kitsune. You did not strain too far from the truth, however, we are close to the Fair Folk."
Next to the tall girl, Mamise seems even smaller, her mischievous face looking upwards. "I'm sorry that your life was taken from you, I do know how it feels to be forced to leave home, I know as well how it feels to be uncomfortable being someone else. There was a saying back in my village, a plea for help will get more than ten orders, you see, kitsune can be generous but we don't like authority. Therefore, I will gladly help you reclaim your land and your identity, since you could use my help and asked for it. If what you are now is only a small part of Seleste, then I am sure that Seleste and I will become very good friends." Her smile, sincere as it is, looks uncomfortably like a smirk.

She then turns towards Vitellia. "On a related note, My Lady Vitellia, you might remember how, earlier in the evening, I almost pledged myself to your service. I must confess, it was mostly a ruse, to get a chance to leave as your cohort, had I not been selected. I'll happily work with you all, but I'll be my own person, I have no intention of acting as a servant again. I hope that you're alright with that."

Tika smiles as the exchange between the two occurs. She's surprised that Mamise changed into a fox-girl, but it just makes sense: she's not the only person who has secrets.

"I understand your position, honey." Tika reassures Seleste. "I know how it is to lose everything, and only have scraps left to work with." she sidles up to the girl and puts an arm around her shoulder. "Cheer up. We're not saying we aren't gonna deal with the bandits, dear! We're just also trying to think farther ahead than just the first challenges! Here, have a drink to help calm your nerves."

She fishes a flask from her apron and hands it to her. (A drink: Damsel in Distress... It's like an alcoholic arnold palmer) "Here, one of my specialties, on the house."

Vitellia regards Mamise with a nod: "Such an arrangement is fine. I have never much cared to have others in my charge as it is, though it is a necessity of my station from time to time."

She pauses briefly, adopting a thoughtful expression. "I would like to assure you that you needn't use deception with me. While it is clear to me that this group is accustomed to a somewhat more... rough and tumble life than I am, once we are in the Green Belt my family name will carry only the weight I can provide it with my sword arm. We will have scarce little than each other to rely on in the wilds, and I will do everything in my power to protect you all from harm."

Vitellia clasps Mamise's shoulder with her gauntleted hand, and sweeps the others with her gaze. "While it is true that I have little choice but to trust you, I do not believe this trust is misplaced."

Clasped by Vitellia's hand, Mamise keeps a smirk on her face. "I will be thankful for your sword arm, since might is not among my many gifts. About trust, well, you can trust me not to lie about important things, not to steal barring cases of overwhelming necessity and not to leave you in jeopardy. I'll do the right, decent thing, just don't go thinking that I'll be honorbound and straightforward. A small deception at the right time can save a pint of blood, and bleeding was never a favored activity of mine."

"Nor is it mine!" Tika adds with a giggle. "But... that doesn't mean I'm not against smacking around someone who gets a little too friendly, you know?"

Suddenly, a cast iron frying pan is in her hands, she gives the pan a spin in her grip and winks at Mamise. "This here is can cook breakfast for 5, two steaks at once, hold a quart of fry oil, and is sturdy enough to brain a kellid barbarian in one shot. Believe me, I tried!" She slips the frying pan away. "I call it Caramon."she says affectionately, patting the pan as it hangs from her apron hooks.

Kingmaker Table 1

The night grows middle-aged before the bonding of the four girls is put to an end by Vitellia's level head making the point that rest tonight means a sharp mind in the morning, and they'll have plenty of time to bond over the course of their mission.

The morning greets them with the smell of bread, a light but hearty breakfast of rolls and cheese has been prepared for them before they saddle up to head out to Oleg's. The Lord Mayor had left a note for them saying that, should they require them, he's willing to part with three of the horses from his Stable, which they'll be permitted to ride to Oleg's. He requests, however that they leave the horses with Oleg and not take them any further, asking that you instead implore Oleg to send them back with whatever hunter or trapper comes through next.

After the five Settlers have made arrangements to ride to the trading post, they find that the journey there is quite pleasant due to the crisp, cool air, the occasional rabbit or fox, birds chirping as they come within a few miles the Narlmarches, and the smell of stewed pork as they approach what they assume is or know to be Oleg's Trading Post. All they can see from the outside is a tall wooden palisade with taller towers at the corners, and a wide wooden gate that seems pulled tight shut.

Feel free to arrange your avatars on the map and add any "minis" you might need, e.g. the horses you may or may not have borrowed/bought.

@ previous night

Seleste seems keen on drinking Tika's offered drink until a scowl crosses her face and she rolls her eyes in frustration, "I must thank you for the offer, but I should refuse." When the conversation turns away from her she mutters seeming to her shoulder, "do I even sound like that?"

She joins the others when each heads for their room.

On the road

Seleste would have preferred to walk, she is used to walking. Horses are used for plowing and hauling. She was not accustomed to being so high off the ground, and "The Skipper" seemed to know it. He took every opportunity to try to head off the trail or munch on a passing bush. Seleste had to resign herself to at least trying to steer him clear of vegetation that would upset his digestion. The worst part was falling behind and having The Skipper launch into a fast trot to catch up, leaving Seleste to rattle about in her armor and hold on for dear life. Selelste probably didn't notice but by the time they reached the trading post, the Skipper was missing more bushes than he had been used to, as Seleste became determined not to let him fall behind all that much.

@ Oleg's

At the sight of the trading post, Seleste was quick to dismount and walk her horse the last of the way, "To give him a cool down." That was the excuse, but she needed to give her butt and thighs a cool down too and didn't want to seem the fool dismounting with quivering legs in front of everyone.

Plus it let the others take the lead in talking with the post. It looked a right fort and better for the 'Barons' to deal with the soldiers. The ride back out was a bit of a raw experience to be coming back so soon and with new friends. She was not sure she had ever been to this place, her Father might have visited...or was it that he said it was abandoned. It must have been the previous post they passed through on their way here that she had visited as a child. Fruit-flavored hard candy sticks...she savored them for months giving each only a few licks a day. Her and her brother would suck them into sharp points and prick each other...She played with one of the amulets on her chest, the one with arrows and stars, "I wonder if they have hard candy?"

Gage can be seen adjusting his cloak as Oleg's comes into view.
"What a walk, and with such excellent company. A pity it's coming to an end."
When he notices Seleste get off her borrowed steed he adds with a smirk "Welcome back to terra firma, Seleste. Too bad we won't have The Skipper for much longer, eh?"

As they approach more closely Gage says to no one in particular
"I thinks a noble with a charter might make the best first impression. Think I should try out my title here?"

Then he turns to Vitellia expectantly "Or would you like to take point?"

Seleste:
Tika will insist she keep the bottle with her, just in case she changes her mind.

Tika rides side-saddle on her horse, enjoying her ride as much as possible. She is quite social, and she has *tons* of salacious rumors from working as a barmaid. Her personality seems to be a blend of the two versions of her you saw during the Lord Mayor's visit; part of her seems the cheery girl who's well aware of how she looks, and the other part sensible, demure noblewoman. Overall, you'll get the impression she started off the noblewoman, and has become the other girl over time.

When they arrive at Oleg's she will pull out her mirror, check herself over, including adjusting her neckline and brushing her hair. "I'll be glad to be done with this horse, I admit." she comments to Seleste. "It's going to take at least an hour to get the stiffness out of my hips!" Her legs *do* wobble when she dismounts, but she seems to not be ashamed of such a thing, moreso just frustrated with the loss of flexibility as she stretches her legs.

"I'm sure the four lovelies with you will make the best kinds of impressions, Gage!" she reassures.

In the morning Vitellia avails herself of the offer to borrow a steed for the journey. Kirby is somewhat jealous, but once they are underway and the bullmastiff discovers a legion of opportunities to chase various fowl and beast into the underbrush during the trip, all is forgiven.

Vitellia can't help but chuckle at Seleste's discomfort while riding. "Best to get accustomed to riding," she teases in a friendly manner. "There's certain to be much more of it in our future."

When the party reaches Oleg's, Vitellia dismounts and pats her temporary steed affectionately on the neck. It had been a lovely ride.

In response to Gage's query: "I can facilitate introductions if you like, though I think it best we take a more humble approach. Common folk living this far afield of Brevoy's protection aren't likely to be impressed by our surnames, I would imagine."

Mamise had begun the travel in high spirits, riding the docile horse borrowed from the Mayor, stringing some chords on her lute. However, after a mile or so, her curse started manifesting as motion sickness, and she spent most of the ride silent and green-faced, trying not to vomit.
"Myself, if I never have to ride anymore, it will be too soon." she laments as she arrives to the Trading Post, gasping for fresh air to soften the nausea. "I agree with Vitellia, here near the Stolen Lands, a title means little without an army behind it. We may make a good impression as a traveling circus, if anything. Let's just put on our best smiles, be bright-eyed..." she shifts to her fox form, waving her tail around "... and bushy-tailed. Been meaning to say that for a while now." she adds, chuckling at her own joke. She then regains her human appearance before anyone sees her. "Let's go meet with Oleg."

As the others discuss the best way to make introductions, Seleste shakes her head, "City Folk". She steps up to the gate with the spear she had been using as a walking stick these last hundred yards. She raps the butt of her spear against the gate. "Hallo, Mister Oleg! Open up! Weary travelers here!"

Gage perks up at the mention of posing as a circus, and he rambles a little bit while Seleste knocks
”Speaking of circuses, are you sure that you don't want to be in your fox form? I could be the lion tamer and you could be the lion.”
Gage cracks his whip to punctuate the statement.
”…
then again I suppose lions are more feline and-”

Gage quickly puts his whip away as the door is answered, smiling innocently.

Vitellia's face twists into a disapproving frown at Gage's comments towards Mamise. "If she runs you through for that, I won't lift a finger to stop her."

"I'd help." Tika offers. "No one talks about by foxy lady friend like that."

She gives Gage a smile, showing she might be joking.

and this is why wisdom is not a dump stat xD
Gage puts his hands up in an 'I surrender' gesture, the smile becoming a smirk.
"Alright alright, I surrender; take me to the gallows then. I'll even go quietly."

Mamise smiles predatorily, showing just a few too many teeth.
"Ah, thank you for your help, but don't worry, girls, Gage is just overeager to impress. I've dealt with worse men, they just have to learn not to bite more than they can chew. You'll have to work harder than that, big boy."

Kingmaker Table 1

The simple, but beautiful middle-aged woman that the party sees as the gate opens is still stirring a large pot of what smells to them like venison stew.

"No gallows necessary, Master...Gage I presume? Ze Lort Mayor sent vurd of your company's comink arrifal!" her thick Ulfen accent enhances her motherly image. She walks over to the outdoor tables and sets the large iron pot down before shouting above her head to the short wooden building to your right. "Oleg, ævintýramenn eru hér! Fá niður hér!"

Ulfen:
"Oleg, the adventurers are here! Get down here!"

The man you deduce is Oleg was atop the building, he begins climbing down the ladder behind him, with a hammer and a sack of nails on his belt. Not only that, but he must've been grumbling the whole way down. When he approached his wife, Oleg said more clearly if with clear sarcasm, "Ég veit, elskan, ég sá þá." Then to the settlers, he says with undertones of both disdain and despair, he says, "Velcome, ve've been expectink you, please, have seat, eat!" He gestures towards the tables with the stew, along with bowls and spoons you didn't notice before as they are obviously made from the same wood as the tables. "And of course you von't have to pay penny. Your assistance here vill be payment enough!"

Ulfen:
"I know, sweetheart, I saw them."

As the rest of the settlers come inside the walls, Svetlana holds one finger up and runs into the building to the back right corner of the trading post. She emerges with warm loaf of fresh bread and a bottle of wine, she shouts at Oleg in Ulfen, he groans and begrudgingly goes in the same building and emerges with five wooden goblets.

Vitellia gives a slight bow when Svetlana and Oleg welcome the party.

"You are too kind to us. We are happy to help, and assure you the task ahead of us will likely require us to spend plenty of coin here in the coming days."

Vitellia unloads her backpack and weapons, stowing them wherever Svetlana indicates is appropriate. With a gesture and a clipped whistle, she instructs Kirby to wait patiently at the entrance. "I'll get you something to eat shortly, big guy. But for now I need you to keep an eye out, yeah?"

When the she and the rest of the group take their seats, she removes her gauntlet and sets it next to her.

Gage takes a couple of small steps away from Mamise, his nervousness not well hidden.
”Ah, speaking of biting and chewing, what’s that wonderful smell? Why don’t we eat while we talk with Oleg?”

"I won't turn down a chance for free food and drink!" Tika exclaims happily. "And a chance to hear more about the troubles of the area."

Mamise winks to Gage, just to add to his discomfort, then curtsies to Oleg and Svetlana. "We are thankful for your ospitality, and I hope that we will provide you with assistance enough to pay you back!"
She sits as the spicy smell of stew settles her stomach.

Kingmaker Table 1

Seeing Vitellia with her horse and equipment, Svetlana gets flustered and says, "Of course, of course! Ze horses can go in ze stables," she gestures to the building to your left, "And you'll be staying in ze guest houses dat my husbant vas repairing for you just now." She gestures to the building just in front of you.

Oleg is simultaneously surprised and glad to join you at the table, as he sits, he pours himself a goblet of wine, doing his best to ignore his wife's glowering. " So, vhat vould you like to know about the bandits?"

Seleste introduces herself to Svetlana and Oleg, then sees to her horse in the stables. While she doesn't know much about riding them, she has taken care of them most of her life. She removes the saddle and blanket and gives the Skipper a quick wipe down beofre seeing to his feed and water.

When she settles back with the others, it is time for Svetlana's question. "Is there any idea where they are striking from? It would be good to take the fight to them before they know we are here.?"

"Numbers would be helpful, as well. I hardly expect you to know an exact head count, but perhaps the greatest number of them you've seen at one time?"

After he gets some food, Gage listens intently for a while before contributing to the conversation.
”Also, good Oleg, you wouldn't happen to know where the bandits tend to strike, would you?”

Kingmaker Table 1

"Strike? Huh, I'm flattered, but no, they know good and vell ve can't defend ourselfs. No, dey just stroll up here near dawn of the first of de mont, demantink deir 'rent' for de mont; I don't know exactly from vhere dey come, but it's somevhere in de Narlmarch. As for numpers, the first time, dey came vid deir leader and about a dozen oders; since den, she's been sending her second in command along vid fewer and fewer oders. Last time, dere vere only a hantful."

Oleg spoke with a calm, but smoldering voice which broke when he mentioned the bandits' first visit; he also wrung his left wrist at that point.

you already know that tomorrow will be the first of the month.
