"Ms Blaithe. I confess I have no idea how one dances to this song, but I would love to learn. Would you consent to teach me?"

During her chat with Methilius (which Moira will continue after another interruption), Oscar comes over with his proposal:

“Gods bless you for worrying about that boy I’ve never met, Oscar! Let’s talk about what to do for him later. For now, that’s an excellent idea." Moira wholeheartedly endorses Oscar’s suggestion of an orchestral performance. She leans in to the young girl’s surprisingly supple playing to catch the beat, but pretty soon she’s improvising complex rhythms in counterpoint to Audia’s Blustering Reel—if Audria’s fiddle is the wind, Moira’s drum is the cyclone of bright red and orange leaves caught up in it—each separate, each intricate, each exploring the contours of the melody by heightening its rhythm.

Afterwards, she says, “Let’s give Drin what he wants! Let’s sing ‘Froggy Went a’Courtin’’ and these beautiful young wolves can dance and we can have a good jam! It’s dirt simple, key of C, much easier than whatever that amazing reel was: take it, Audria!" …and unless the dance gets derailed by anyone else’s needs, the band within the party should be able to play an ensemble version of this silly song, with Moira belting it out at the top of her lungs, boots stamping along with Audria:

Euphemia laughs and accepts the hand offered by Oscar to pull herself up with, her free hand moving to pull off her satchel and set it on the bench so it wouldn't get in the way. "I thought you noble sorts had instructors who taught you dances with which to woo the common ladies," she says with a sly grin. The witch eases her hand free of his once she stands and with a melodramatic sigh she drapes it over her forehead, still grinning, "Ah, it seems my work is never done. Very well, I shall show you how to dance a reel."

Clearing her throat, Euphemia takes a few paces back from Oscar and glances around, looking for the most open space in the tavern — if there was a part of the room with more space, she would gesture for him to follow her over there; otherwise, she would simply stay by the table.

Assuming in the following that Oscar follows Euphemia's directions for the dance, since he asked for the lesson. If he doesn't, feel free to interject!

"Alright. So we start by taking three steps forward, bowing, and returning to our places. Like so," she begins, and does just that — taking three steps forward, bowing, and returning to her previous position. "Next, we approach and hook our arms together at the right elbow, go in two circles and return to our starting positions. We then do it again, but hooking our left elbows. Right then left, alright?"

As she takes the leading role in this dance, Euphemia is deliberately slow as she proceeds into this next step, though she has a sneaking suspicion Oscar isn't entirely honest about not knowing how to dance to a reel. "A bit of pep in the step doesn't hurt, but you work into that."

When that move is completed and she returns to her starting position, Euphemia holds her arms out in front of her, hands offered out. "Now, hold your arms out like me. We'll meet in the middle again, take each others hands, and go in a circle again. If we were dancing at full speed, you'd know why this dance is called a reel..." That impish grin once again returns to her features. When that step was completed, she hums and pauses a moment, before continuing her instructions. "I'll show you what to do for this next part. In a full reel, we'd... er... do it together around each other, but you need to know the steps before you can do that, so just stay where you are." A spring in her step, she approaches Oscar, stepping to his right and, without turning her head or torso at any point, sidesteps behind him and reels back to her starting position. "Now, you try to perform that move to me."

Upon Moira's pronouncement that a frog song is forthcoming the halfling's inebriated face lights up and he announced to the other patrons, "Quiet down, this is gonna be a good singin'

The wiry halfling wiggles in his seat his gyrations in rhythm with the melody while his face beamed with pleasure. A perplexed look briefly crossed his simple face at the second verse but he continued to grinned away and sway to the tune. He joined in at the end, loud and off key, almost falling off the bench, "King kong kitchie kitchie kai me oh!"

Drin enthusiastically and awkwardly applauded Moira's song from his seat on the bench, "Half of a frog song is better than none." Abruptly he stands on the bench and gives an exaggerated bow, "That be one of the most best froggy songs I be hearin' in some time Miss. Ye have me thanks." He wipes the corners of his eyes and sat back down, "Done right reminded me of me old friend Hopper. Especially the sword part and all. Bestest frog I ever be knowin."

"Madame" grins Oscar "I can Conjugate, and I can Conjure, but I cannot Conga to save my life. My mother dislikes dancing, and the only tutor she allows has been herself."

Whatever Oscar's faults - and he has many - deceit is not one of them, at least as it comes to his dancing skill. He's as well co-ordinated as any young man his age - which is to say not very - but makes up for a lack of talent with a surplus of enthusiasm.

"So.. step right... behind... spin..." Oscar backs into Euphemia from behind, reflexively spinning around and catching her in a loose hold approved by neither dance not duel instructors.

He springs back from the grapple. "Oh! I do beg your pardon. Uh... might we try again?"

Oscar bows "So: we hook our arms together?" Oscar grins in delight as the young Euphemia guides him through the steps - successfully this time. By the time Moira starts singing he is, if not competent, at least reasonable. "I could do this forever!" he declares, only to be proven a liar and stumble at Moira's wording change. Blushing he splits his attention between his partner's big blue eyes and Moira's rendition.

Aishe applauds Moira's frog keenly, though it is an odd song. "Well done! Well done indeed. I've never met a frog who could handle a sword before, but I heard of a grippli, a sort of frog-man if you can believe it, who wielded a long spear. Mind you, I didn't see this with my own eyes, so I cannot guarantee the truth of the matter. Yet if true, he must have been quite an image! Short frog, long spear like that."

He delightedly watches Euphemia and Oscar do what they can in the limited space. He's pleased the company he's with has settled in to singing and dancing rather than arguing. Though he's sure they have discordant opinions, everyone is behaving themselves more or less.

He smiles warmly.

Euphemia is in good spirits as she leads Oscar through the steps again, a little faster this time but still relatively slow.

She bursts into laughter as Moira's rendition of froggy-went-a'-courting suddenly turns into 'Oscar-went-a'-courting', her face flushing as well. "Oh no. You've left an impression on the bard. This night, I fear, might be immortalized in song," she manages between spurts of laughter.

Moira sweeps off her broad-brimmed black felt hat and returns an elaborate bow to Oscar (who will probably note that it has more of the antiquated etiquette common in stagecraft than is truly proper), to her fellow performers, to all the people listening to the music ('cept Cyril Amberlamp) and her "Thank you, Thank you! I'm leaving Wicken on the 'morrow, but it's been such an interesting, talented, musical, talkative, all-around-ferment of an evening that I feel like I've been here a week and a half. Thank you, sincerely! I can't recall another evening so replete with all things."

The Smiling Pig has seen many new faces tonight, some who have come from the bloated city down river - and are like to never return whilst some, maybe not yet knowing it, are soon to find their destiny irreparably entwined with the Blight. The hour is late when the final customers, weary from the return journey from Castorhage, come through the door... Redmane welcomes the men into the tavern, pours them drinks and asks how their trip was - appearing morose, the eldest of the pair, hears the music end and, unbidden, stands near the fire and sings a slow acapella stanza...

The mood, having swung from celebratory to something far more downbeat, is not - this time - abated by a new cask from Redmane... indeed, it is time now for the Smiling Pig to close... for tonight's customers to melt away into the autumnal night once more. As people leave the tavern or make their way to the inn's sleeping quarter, the light of the moon guides their path... until, the temperature unseasonably cool, drops a little farther as a dark cloud smears itself across the pale orb.

Welcome back... welcome to the Discussion Thread proper for our adventure in Castorhage. Drop in, say 'Hi' and maybe start talking about party roles / any tweaks that you may want to make... And now, here are the campaign traits for the Levee; the PCs are assumed to have lived in or visited Wicken for a period of time and to have developed a close relationship with the locals. It is a place they have been happy with and have enjoyed a good life...

Campaign Traits:
Alman Artist: You spent many hours in Wicken’s Church of St. Alman, helping Father Gromwell to paint scenes of celestial glory and listening to his stories of the afterlife. You gain a +2 bonus on Craft (painting) and Knowledge (planes) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Alman Preacher: You spent many hours in Wicken’s Church of St. Alman, absorbing Father Gromwell’s religious stories that lled your head and heart with dreams of Heaven and Paradise. You gain a +2 bonus on Knowledge (religion) and Perform (oratory) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Ciderwright: Wicken’s copious crop of apples always appeared in late summer or early autumn, and you became an expert at climbing the orchards to retrieve the choicest fruit. Working under the guidance of the local brewer, Tully Redmane, you also mastered the art of cider-making. You gain a +2 bonus on Climb and Profession (brewer) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Grog’s Snarer: You spent many hours with Wild Grog, Wicken’s local poacher, learning how to set snares and trap game. Game was plentiful in Wicken, the foul air of the city unable to grasp at its forest and meadows. You gain a +2 bonus on Craft (traps) and Stealth checks and both are class skills for you.

Grog’s Spotter: Your keen eyes aided Wild Grog, Wicken’s local poacher, especially at night when hunting rabbits. Grog was a great story teller, and you spent happy hours listening to his stories of heroism and dragons. You gain a +2 bonus on Perception and Perform (oratory) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Grog’s Trapper: You spent a lot of time with Wild Grog, Wicken’s local poacher, who tracked with dogs and his pet pig, Olive. You have happy memories of the wild-haired giant of a man, laughing as he bagged rabbits and told wild stories of adventure at the camp re. You gain a +2 bonus on Survival and Profession (trapper) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Wicken Farmer: You grew up and worked on a farm in Wicken. The land was fertile, the water clean, and the harvests were invariably good. Your farm thrived and, in time, became yours. You gain a +2 bonus on Handle Animal and Profession (farmer) checks, and both are class skills for you.

Wicken Shepherd: Your family farmed sheep on the hills above Wicken. Life could be tough, especially in the winters, but it was rewarding. You gain a +2 bonus on Handle Animal and Survival checks, and both of these skills are class skills for you.

Gosh. I can really see why you had trouble selecting a party. There was a lot of great RP'ing going on in here. Truly, I'm surprised I was selected (but oh, oh, oh so glad to tag along :).

So, Hi! I'm 34 years old and living in the southeastern US. I'm a lawyer, but recently took a full time teaching position at a private college. I've been playing tabletop for just over three years, pathfinder being the only system I've had much experience with. I got involved with Pathfinder Society and learned the ropes, then took to GMing live games before discovering the beauty that is PbP, which I started nearly two years ago. This summer I moved and started a new job, which threw my PbP gaming for a loop and forced me to cancel my participation in nearly all of my games (including a game of Bloody Jack that I was particularly enjoying), but I returned a few weeks ago and have been looking to rebuild my PbP hobby. This is really my only creative outlet, but that's just fine, as PbP gives us such flexibility to create fun characters and tell compelling stories, while also (hopefully) entertaining ourselves and our fellow players. When not typing away here I'm teaching, which I love, or cooking, or working in the yard. I also have two dachshunds, my real-life arcane familiars.

I'm glad to get to play again with Adam Warnock and Death's Adorable Apprentice, and I'm pleased to meet Euan and Parrot Familiar.

Traits: I believe I'll stick with what I have (reckless and pragmatic activator). Salom already has strong ties to the town and knows Father Gromwell, Tully, Grog, and Olive. The bonuses the campaign traits give aren't any more beneficial than what I've already got (but some of them are really good).

Role: We don't really fit the classic tropes of bruiser, healer, wizard, and rogue, but that can only make things more interesting. Salom and Thea will make suitable melee combatants, certainly at low levels. Proper alchemical discoveries and infusions will help with that. I'm open to suggestions.

Anyway, I need to run now, but was too excited not to jump in and say hello (particularly since Salom made such a salty impression).


So, maybe I should also introduce myself... Hi, I've got a full decade on Salom and send my poisonous GM missives from the border of England and Wales - I've been GM'ing on PbP for the last four years or so since returning from a period of time living / working in sunny Australia. Like many others here on the boards, moving left me without a gaming group and the boards let me scratch this particular itch!!!

So yeah, I've already run a couple of adventures in the Blight (Bloody Jack with Something Wicked and the Crucible with Adam Warnock) so I'm starting to get a feel for the place... in addition, I have got a few good long-running games (Shattered Star, Legendary Planet and the Emerald Spire) here so I am hoping to keep out dreadful story running for a good while yet...

I've been looking forward to this game since the Blight book bashed its way through my letterbox... and here we finally are, some familiar faces plus some new folks that I've never played with - fun times await.

Greetings all, and well met! I'm in the Bay Area (San Francisco, CA) and have been gaming for more than three and a a half decades, and in Pathfinder for many years now. Love the Play By Post forum for extra role playing and play this way exclusively now. :)

So... I've built an archer, but he really won't be that hardcore until about half way through the campaign. He'll be OK, but not great in combat until later in the game. I can live with that, but I don't want to weaken the team overmuch if folks are worried about it (GM Zed, I don't know your style or preferences).

If folks prefer and we feel we need a front liner, subject to DM approval, I have a brawler, a mr. Baran (link) that might interest folks. Happy to be more of a combatant if we need that.

Brawler Build Question:
Baran is a Brawler (Shield Champion). As I understand the rules at fifth level, with a throwing shield (+50gp), I can loose it from my shoulder (free action), throw it (standard action), but by RAW, I cannot re-shoulder it as the ricochet happens at the end of the round.

I humbly submit that this breaks the build intent and I ask you to rule instead that I can re-shoulder the shield at the end of the round as a free action so I can use it to protect myself (Shield to AC) on the opponents turn. That certainly seems intended - the whole trick of the Shield Champion is to throw and retrieve while being all cool looking. ;) Further, the archetype is by no means overpowered, and requires a number of feats to do well and additional cash, which detracts from other options I may have as a brawler.

I think this request makes for a fun balanced build, but you’re the boss. How do you want to rule assuming we even go down this path?

Hi folks! I'm in Seattle, but I'm from Virginia. I'm jealous of Salom's college job, as I finished my PhD in English Lit this August and am currently stuck in the morass of the academic job market. You finish your degree, they show you the door, alas. I am an avid homebrewer and musician. I do have a parrot familiar, Penelope.

I got into Pathfinder while living in Bellingham, WA, for a couple years. We started a campaign that lasted about a year and a half among some graduate students in the university of that fair northern city (I was invited along despite belonging to a different school), an entirely harebrained homebrew extravaganza built off of a Google map of Bellingham and its environs. We rotated GM, but I ended up running more sessions than anyone else. My character started out a fighter and ended up a construct-crafting eldritch knight. Our goblin barbarian was an expatriate from Chester, UK: maybe a neighbor of Zed's? That game ran until level 11, and my highest-reached level is 12 (from 4) in an ongoing no-holds-barred Rappan Athuk campaign where I've learned to love and fear Frog God Games. I've dabbled in PFS but it just ain't the thing for me. I've also got one PbP going other than this one.

Traits: I will probably stick to Deathtouched and Reactionary on my traits, but Ciderwright is very appealing (applepeeling?). Moira is built to be a second liner who can sub in for the front in a pinch, what with toughness and a sword. Don't leave her alone up there for too long, though. I'm toying with the idea of taking Craft Wondrous Item at level 3, assuming M. makes it that far. She's my first bard.

Moira likes Aishe, so I hope you keep him.

Zed--that Gluck poem is so perfect for the moment--did you have it planned out beforehand or did you dig it up to fit? If that's a "behind the screen" question, just wink.

Ah, I seem to be the last one. That is normal. Also I am very excited to get to play! I have a great love for the dark and macabre. Blight, once I learned of it, seems right up my alley. I play in a Call of Cthulhu game so I have a morbid fascination with my own suffering.

I live in Oklahoma and I work nights so my posting time is all over the place. I got into D&D to hangout with my best friend, who was being stolen by her eventual husband, and I have been hooked since then. That was about six years ago, I think. I got to play in Eberon for about four months then the game fell apart. So we moved on to Pathfinders and made it to level 14 in RotRL but never picked it back up as the GM's life was way to hectic.

I am in lots of PbP games and I love this style! It allows for a different amount of focus on characters than a live table does. Sundays are my live game but I was recently relieved from running for the next few months. We are in the world of Robtech. My game, which is my first time running anything, is a custom campaign. I am taking them to level 20 and around mythic tier six. I am told I am insane for playing with the mystic stuff for my first game. I am a glutton for punishment ;)

Alexis is.. well.. hmm. She is definitely able to be a scout and to do have Disable Device but none of the trappfinding things, you know, the stuff that makes a rouge the classic rouge.

Rouge is not a class I have ever had the chance to play and the only ones I have seen at my table is a anti-social power-gamer who steals from the party on a good day. Not the route I am wanting to go. Teamwork is a good thing.

On that note I am always happy to listen to suggestions. I tend to go with what matters to the character and not what mechanically will matter. That means I tend to end up with weaker characters sometimes though that never bothers me but it does seem to bother others.

Zed are we keeping the Smiling Pig as cannon?

For the traits Ciderwright and Grog’s Snarer both have an appeal ;) But I know better than to make any decisions after work. Sleepy me is rather wordy tonight. I apologize for that but I am not deleting anything. I think I avoid to many spelling errors. I am no longer an English major so I get to have typos :P

For sure, the Player's Guide is a great resource if you want to go ahead and buy it... I don't believe there are any spoilers in there per se so reading it shouldn't give you any advance warning of things that may or may not happen during our adventure.

The Gluck poem was one that I went and looked for to fit the mood of where the adventure is imminently headed - the Blight itself is very rooted in literature and culture with each part of the Adventure Path pointing to influences / suggested reading... further, Richard Pett has also listed a bunch of literary, musical and cinematic influences that shaped Castorhage - it probably shouldn't surprise you to hear that Lewis Carroll and Charles Dickens alongside some more contemporary authors - Gaiman and Mieville, can be 'felt' here).

So... I have laid out the first of our Gameplay posts in which the quiet lives of our villagers are turned upside down!!! There is no need for the events to have happened immediately after the evening in the Smiling Pig so folks who want to describe their idyllic life before the soldiers came and / or head to one of Wicken's small shops... that's totally cool.

I'll give folks a short while before moving us along...

One favour though? Could you, if you don't have your heart utterly set on it, find a different portait for Audria? It is a little discombobulating for your GM to have Briana (from my Shattered Star game) appearing here... and, for sure, I will call Audria by the wrong name at some point!!!

I am looking forward to learning more about Audria's past. I know that puts a lot of work on you Zed, but I thank you all the same for allowing me to run with this concept and I hope that the results are worth it.

Why thank you... the way in which the AP launches was another reason why I was favourable to running an IC recruitment activity - it gives Wicken some degree of resonance now that you, as players, have genuine memories of the place... oh wicked me ;)

Ciderwright had far to much appeal so I took that one. Also this seems like the kind of game that will benefit from alcohol.

Also I have read your little intro and I am in love with this game already! Punch all the feels :D

I moved a rank out of linguistics to put it in profession.

...and that is why I suggested you folks didn't need to worry too heavily about front-line combatants. Rigo is kinda outside of the recruitment guidelines but I wanted a genuine outsider to add some tensions to the group... as if your horrible GM wasn't doing that already!!! The Tabaxi isn't a zero HD race and so you'll probably notice that he doesn't yet have any class levels - hopefully that will even it out a little... although I would hate to be the first Castorhage lowlife that crosses his path!!!

Then I have succeeded in my goal for this bit. I'm sure that Zed's only going to make it worse when he gets around to revealing some of how Audria wound up with her scars.

That said, she would not be unappreciative of the cuddles.

Don't take Rigo personally, as far as he's concerned, anyone over the age of 12 in Wicken deserved to be hung, as they either participated in, or refused to punish, the murder of his parents.

He's CG, but has some very dim views on people standing by the sidelines while others do evil.
