Ahh...the perpetual misunderstanding of haste. makes me feel alive every time it comes up :) Still, I imagine that we have plenty of time to get on deck before he casts haste and you attack. Thus, you can probably get your first round of haste as multiple attacks. Run it by the DM.
Most people I run into on PbP or in my Rl group (though they have had it beaten out of them by now) still believe Haste always allows you an extra attack. But, the wording on Haste is "When making a full attack action, a hasted creature may make one extra attack with one natural or manufactured weapon." [em]
So, you only get the extra attack if you made a full attack, (i.e., did not move, or only took a 5' step in that round). A lot of people mistakenly apply that extra attack even when they moved, charged, danced a jig, etc.
That is what I was referring to as the "perpetual misunderstanding of haste"
It also used to age your character a year each time it was cast, but I can't remember which edition that was. Might have been 2E.
Hey DM, are the ships attached by the bridge now? Wasn't clear on that. Thanks. Also, is it possible to get to the casters without provoking AoO's?

Sorry everyone, for my extremely delayed posting, but as my character is not a member of your exploration team, Jakiim will not be with you at all times... Sometimes, he will leave the party for periods of time.. I had meant to post more before the group boarded the ship, but I went out of state on a camping trip, and was away from the internet for about a week. It didn't seem appropriate to just have Jakiim jump up onto your ship from the waters uninvited, or to post as if he had boarded the vessel with the group... So I waited until I saw fit. I am back home now though, and will be able to keep up with the game at all times. I will surely tell the party before departing, but there will be times where my character is off on his own agendas for short periods at a time...

Didn't want to clutter up the gameplay thread with this big block of text...
Regarding Otiven Getting Sliced to Ribbons: In order to try and save Otiven... Since his Attack of Opportunity hit, and the thing that triggered it was Dez casting a spell, Dez has to make a concentration check DC = 10 + spell level + damage dealt or the spell is lost. If, in this case, the spell is in fact lost, then that's 24 damage Otiven won't have actually suffered. I hope.
Additionally, Speedy would get to take an AoO against one of the other magi, potentially spoiling another strike.
Regarding Initiatives/Rounds/Combat Chaos: Would it help keep rounds and actions straight, Marty, if we kept track of the rounds in our posts? Like putting the round number in the first line? It might help keep us from tripping over our actions and frankly, at this current junction, I don't know if we're in a round that I've shot an arrow or if I still need to =P
The Island DM
As far as the magi go, only Dez and Coeasun casted spells, Gawani uses pool strike, no AoO, and hes the one that hit speedy. As far as rounds go, ya it would help, biggest thing thats getting me is im posting from my phone. Which takes forever and is a bit complex. But Sverinn is the only one who has acted out of turn. Since rnd one shes been a turn ahead, her last move/spell craft check put her back on track, the pit should have been on my upcoming dm post. Which is why I tld her shed act last, no matter what, next round. But i threw it in with the other pirates and the AoO because she did only take a move action last round, tried to be fair/on your alls side ;)
Im about to make a dm post for rnd 6 now. Everyone has posted an action except Miggen, lwss ive yet to see it. But Svreinn wont act this round, or only gets a move action. Next post guys plz do what Ekembe suggests, put rnd 7 in your post, stat block or "actions" spoiler. Since i dnt have to wake up early, ill also draw up a new map tonight :)
Thanks for all your patients and help guys, im loving this game, as i hope you are too.
Round 7, Initiative X
Sverinn I thought Sverinn was behind, in this combat I have:
1)Rolled out of a hammock (move), Cast mage armor (standard).
2)came on deck (move), cast silent image (standard)
3)fired longbow (standard) (post that I was reloading a crossbow, oops)
4)realized that silent image is concentration (standard), got cover (move)
5)dropped concentration (free), cast create pit (standard)
so assuming i was concentrating on the silent image for a few rounds, I should be about with everyone else.
initiative x is so that the GM can post all the actions in sequence once he has either received a response from everyone, or decided that everyone had enough time to respond.
Yeah, you're right that Gawani's pool strike wouldn't provoke (really cool description for that, btw!), but Corasun's spell still would, assuming he's within Speedy's threatened area. It doesn't matter who the target of the spell is, just that the spell is cast within anyone's threatened area. And for the most part, Otiven and Speedy share the same threatened area.
So it's possible (highly likely in fact) that in the least Dez's earlier swing was spoiled by Otiven's AoO. Which would keep him alive and spare him from burning 2 of his 3 hero points. This round at least. I hope. =P
The Island DM
All good points Ekembe, heres what well do, me and otiven wil roll that sequence i this thread, if he wishes of course, and if the end outcome is different then he keeps his hero points and everyone gets an additional point, including Otiven, for my mistake almost killing a pc. If the outcome is the same then whats done is done.
Sverinn, you had posted one round and then again in the same round but it was meant fkr next rnd... no worries guus, ;) everyone but Delisar has acted in rnd 6. So, rnd 7 posts by wensday night. Ill have rest of 6 and map up before noon.
Thanms for enjoying my descriptions! I try hard to make every rnd unique and exciting ;)

Ok, so about intuitive. Its easier for me this way because I dnt have to keep scrolling through everything, up n down, up n down, to post turns. I just go straight down the "list", and your guys dont have to worry about posts that come after yours effecting what you so. Bscause if it's posted after you it happens aafter you. So thats my case lol, but in my eyes, dns is about the players having fun, so lets take a vote, whos for my initiative and whos for the real way? Also, whats everyone's opinion on the game so far? Fair? Fun? Interesting? Please throw some feed back my way guys, suggestions and most importantly any goals or paths your have in mind for your characters individually. Well be getting to the island within the next dew days, completeing the first "scene" of act 1. There will be 3 "scenes" per act. And act 2 I am about to start fleshing out in more detail, id like to make it more pc directed if possible.
Regarding Initiative in PbPs:
I think that combat in pbps run more fluidly with an initiative that follows the posting order rather than initiative rolls. That does, however, kind of stick it to characters who are built in such a way as to almost always go first (cough Delisar cough) =P I think that letting players adjust their feats/traits/class abilities was a fair way of adressing that change though, so no harm no foul as far I'm concerned. Then again, I wasn't particularly impacted by it, so others may feel differently.
It's possible to have Initiative AND follow the posting order, but that can really slow a game down. (i.e. roll for iniative, list the order, and post in that order) I mean, it can get really, really slow.
If we do wind up rolling for Initiative though, I would *highly* recommend you rolling all the initiatives for everyone, Marty, and then sorting it instead of having to wade through a half dozen posts to figure out the order. You can save yourself time by creating a spoiler on your Island DM profile with a giant wall of our names and the dice expressions for each of our initiatives. Once it's setup, you'd just need to copy and paste. I can only imagine how brutal it would be to try and do that from scratch every time on a phone. Yeesh!
The storm slowly fades but you still hear blasts of thunder nearby. Then the ship rocks heavily and you realize it's not thunder, but cannons!

Player 4 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

Badguy 2 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7

<insert chunk of text describing ??? 2's actions here>
Alright, Round 1 - Player's are up! Go!
The other thing I think it key to keeping combat moving smoothly are solid DM posts summing up the Round's events and actions. Regardless of how we determine Round Order, it's still important to know what we have to do each round. And where we're at in the round.
If the DM posts multiple times in the round, it's helpful if the initiative list is included like...
<rolls a bunch of reflex saves in a spoiler>
Player 3's fireball toasts ??? 2 and Badguy 1, there's nothing left but ashes and cinder!
??? 2 - 25 (dead)
Player 4 - 23 (went)
Player 2 - 19 (went)
Player 3 - 15 (went)
Player 1 - 12 (still to go)
Badguy 2 - 7 (still to go)
Badguy 1 - 6 (dead)
??? 1 - 5 (still to go)
Regardless of how we determine who goes in what order - in my experience, that kind of tracking from the DM is extremely helpful in keeping pbp combats flowing well. And the more participants in the pbp, the more helpful it is. Even if we don't hold to a rigid initiative order, the kind of summary in Example 2 w/out initiative scores is still super helpful. You can also include the damage each participant has taken in the same list - which is something you're already doing for our piratey foes.
Oh, and if we do roll for initiative, it'd probably be good if we players included our initiative count next to the round number in our posts.
Round 10 - Ini 12
Ekembe does amazing things! They're really amazing! So amazing he himself is amazed!
Whew. That was a lot of words. I'll answer you other questions in a subsequent post, Marty, lest this post grow so large as to devour all the boards =P
Regardless of which method we use, I would like a GM recap for the round (which we have been receiving!). I would also like to know that recaps occur each day in the morning, or each evening.
And that way everyone knows that they check the page in the morning, see the DM recap from last night, then post their actions. First post first action is fine then. And anyone that doesn't post that day either gets bot-ed or they are looking at their shoes for the turn. Initiative doesn't matter this way.
The other method is to use initiative and not post order, and as noted, there is a certain amount of scrolling involved, which does suck eggs. though it does allow for the bad guys to have their turns mixed in with the players instead of at the beginning or end of the round.
I prefer using initiative, but I understand the reasons for your preference... no biggie.
If you end up using it, you could paste this into your profile or campaign info.
Miggen 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Otiven 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Sverinn 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Ekembe 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Rowan 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16
Delisar 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Jacen 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Jakiim 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Everything gets re-rolled starting with the first Magi attack, Dez was first i believe. Its up to you, and it will take place here in discussion thread, because no matter the outcome nothing changes in games, jus number of hero points :) sorry for all the confusion though. From now on Ill be rolling all AoOs. For ease-of-flow purposes.
As for initiative,
Im going to roll for you guys like suggested, bit you all will still act in the order you post in. Bit the npcs will get rolls as well, ill be comparing their rolls to the rolls i make or "poster" 1-8. So each "slot" will have an initiative number. That way pcs and npcs will be mixes up fairly every round. You guys just keep posting, ill handle the initiative and well see how good it works out next combat. Just know that you all will act in the order you post in still.
Just wnted to keep you guys updated on my timeframe so no one is guessin when ill be posting recaps :) ENJOY!!!
The Island DM
Um, Marty, using Escape Artist to get out of a grapple is a standard action, so, unless your magus has some way to quicken his spell, he can't get it off until next round. Also, my character would not charge into a guaranteed flank. He's an off melee, not a damage sink.
Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that I would rather you let me choose what my character does instead of just deciding his actions for me for the sake of your narrative.
If this is a problem, please send me a PM.

So - is any of us here especially gifted at spreadsheet loot-tracking wizardry? How many ways are we splitting it (all split evenly amongst the party? Gornack and all the NPCs get 1 share between them? Gornack and all the NPCs each get their own share? Does Delisar get a share?)
Now those are questions that should have been answered before we hired on...
Are the ship's crew staying or just dropping us off? If staying then, they become part of the background clutter (except those wearing red vests and jerkins). Reason I ask is because it would have a bearing on how the loot splits.
Going on earth history...
Generally the crew would split up one or two shares. Officers would have a couple of shares each, number based on rank, with the captain having the second most shares. The ship owner would have the most shares, and the ship itself would generally have between 10 and 20 percent of the shares. This represents repairs, general food stocks, etc.
However, we are in a fantasy world. And, we are passengers on the ship, so we would generally expect a certain level of security from the ship and its crew. But, since we acted more like guards of the ship, and did the majority of the defense, we could argue for a significant portion of the loot.
My personal viewpoint is the general ship gear like rope, tools, sail cloth should be added to our ship's stores. The barrels should also be dumped into general loot that is part of the background that doesn't need tracking. The magic items, and any armor or weapons that can be used by any of the defense team (the players) gets divvied up amongst us first, the rest going into general (tracked) loot.
Unless we are going someplace with a market, (and I doubt it) we can expect that we will need to be self sufficient. Now, if we are just getting dropped off, then I would be asking for, and expecting, that all of the loot gathered that was not used to immediately repair our ship, should be dropped with us, since our next resupply would be some time in coming.
Now, as for tracking the stuff, unless someone wants to volunteer, I don't mind keeping track of the group loot on the bottom of my character profile. Any group loot carried with the party should be tracked by the character that is carrying the loot.
The amulet of natural armor +2 is immediately useful in combat and I suggest it goes to one of the front line combatants first.
The necklace of adaption is something more situational, and I would suggest that it go into group loot for use when needed (and yes the wizard would happily hold it for the party).
The necklace of adaption I would normally suggest go to the face/rogue first. The wizard (me) would be interested in it for some role-play humor, not to mention she may be the party face of back-up face. though this item could also be considered group loot for specific situations.
Until we figure out the sword and robe (may need to work together on those tomorrow), we should probably hold off on any specific distributions.
And then we have the three flasks. Once we have a determination on what they are we can talk about who holds them too.
Unless someone wants something specifically from the misc stuff, I'd say put it in the party loot pile or ship and crew share.
Having a spoiler in one of our profiles is certainly an option for tracking. We could also start a new thread and have it be dedicated just to loot distribution. Alternatively, I've also seen google docs/drive used for shared tracking.
Regardless of method, I do think it'd be a good idea to figure out HOW (particularly with how many shares and who gets them) to split it all before we actually TRY to split it all =P
Do we want to designate 1 share just for group expenses? For instance, let's say there were 4 party members and they came across 1000gp. Would each party member get 250 gp or would each party member get 200 and the Group Fund get 200 as well? Wands of Cure Light Wounds, Lesser Restoration, etc could be taken from the group fund and personal funds can be spent on what you want.
The Island DM
You all are getting droped off. Gornavk and the ships crew dont need a share, divide it amongst yourselves, without Delisar. IF he comes back within a week, he will of course be given some gold, i dont think hes coming back though. As far as jow you all do everything else, each a share sn tje a group fund os a great idea.
Please continue :))
Btw, potions are gaseous form (purple), displacement (black) and clairvoiance(white)
I'll take the displacement if you guys dont mind, Im the most frontline oriented character here I believe. The longer im around, the less enemies hitting you guys.
A fund for wand of CLW, Lesser Restoration etc sounds like a good plan. How are we gonna divide up the shares of loot though, is still up to debate. I just want my hat :)
Group Fund is a great idea for sure! I'm not picky about whoever wants to track it. I would, but I honestly barely have time to get online and post most days, much less keep track of all the loot.....
Jakiim could really less about the coins of the loot, give half of my share to the group fund.. However, he is on a seperate (Unknown to the other players) mission of gathering a few items that once belonged to people from his past...
Bear with me on Jakiim's past guys, his story will unfold in-game. But, until he thinks it is "Necessary" for you all to know, he will try to avoid going into detail when talking about his past, especially regarding the Undine people.
Did we decide that all the loot from the pirate ship would remain ours?
If so, I had stated that tools were to be taken from the ship as well.
Since it's looking like this is going to be a robinson crusoe campaign, can we get an inventory?
(FYI: sailing ships would generally have a decently outfitted carpenter's shop)
did we get a schedule for the next stop by the ship?
Also, types of trees?
What is the climate like?
I suggest picking a place on earth that is similar to what you want and we can go from there. Big difference between an island in hawaii, off the new england coast, northern washington, new zealand, or tropical africa. That or pick a tv show that has similar foilage.
Is this lush and dense tropical rain forest kind of area? If so, more than one canopy in the trees?
How close is the island to the equator? This will give an idea of the temperature and seasonal extremes.
We don't need to know all of these yet, but...
What's the annual rainfall like? Monsoon's?
The Island DM
I have pictured more of a tropical rain forest type deal, thick thick forest over most of the island, id say a 3 layred canopy. It would be hot, and humid as all hell. And wet too, water runoff would be hard to pinpoint though, it would still rain through in many areas, and drip off the thick leaves in many more. Sorry for not being ale to be mire descriptive atm, im super busy... this weekend ill be catching up on research and be ALOT better about it :) until then though, think rain forest. No paths, or trails. Even the clearing would seem odd except for sunlight not reaching this patch to grow anything under the thick trees.
