Cedric looks grim. "A horrifying thought, indeed," he agrees. "I was hoping that we would be able to come to some sort of peaceable arrangement with them, but it appears that the language barrier is probably going to make that impossible. Hopefully this means we're close, though. Is anyone capable of sending a message back to the group? If not I think we should collect them before we get too far and continue to bring them with us until we're sure we're close enough to get into the inevitable fight."

"I understand the draconic language," Cyrioul offers. "I agree that finding the caves as soon as possible is crucial. We can always send one of us as a fast runner back to the group to bring them closer to our location here. Is there a defensible location nearby here, in case the troglodytes come upon us at night? Boudra, can you use your knowledge of the land to scout one out for us?"

We should either camp for the night, or try to find this troglodyte cave, Boudra signs with a sigh. I say we push on. I should be able to track that group back to the cave, and they'll realize something is wrong when their scouts don't return...

Does anyone want to come with me to get back to our townspeople and lead them here before we confront the troglodytes on their own territory? I'm no woodsman, but I think I could leave marks to follow to get back here, at least."

Boudra nods to Caladra. I agree with Caladra, Cyrioul, she signs. What's the point of getting all the others here when here is just as exposed, no safer, than anywhere else in the forest? And possibly less safe, with the troglodytes lurking nearby. If we find the cave and it's too much for us, we'll fall back and return to the group for safety in numbers. If it's not, we'll clear it out and bring them back then. We still have plenty of daylight I think, so let's see what we can figure out.

Cyrioul nods and lifts his hands. "Point well taken. Presuming that the caverns are not too expansive, I trust that we'll be able to strategically remove any opposition before running back for our charges." He stands to shoulder his pack, then shakes out his arms and legs. "I'm ready when you are - lead the way."

Thorek falls into step beside Boudra, acting once again as her backup eyes and ears.

Following the troglodytes’ meandering trail, Boudra and Thorek begin to suspect that these were not seasoned scouts. Their aimless path suggests that these were relative newcomers, exploring the surface for the first time in a while.

Their tracks lead to a large tree-covered ridge rising from the forest like a small, green mountain born from the Fangwood itself. Many clefts and fissures cut into the rock, but none look large enough to be a cave.

Perception DC 25:
Beyond a tangle of hanging roots and creepers, you espy the concealed mouth of a natural cave, yawning open in a verdant face of the ridge.

Cedric helps with the search, using his spear much like a walking stick to help with the hilly terrain as they go. Once one of them presumably finds something, he plans to be a part of the front lines.

The moss and ivy carpeting the ground around the ridge make it difficult to trace where the troglodytes originated.
After a persistent search, Bree parts a curtain of creepers and roots, revealing the mouth of a natural cave, yawning open in the verdant face of the ridge

Beyond the tangle of roots shading the cave entrance, a narrow tunnel slopes sharply down. The tips of tree roots protrude from the ceiling like stained teeth. Faint light from outside catches on a streak of cloudy teal crystal running along the length of one wall. Bulbous brown and purple fungal growths sprout from the ground, and an unpleasant, faintly sulfurous odor hangs in the air.

Boudra looks around, sniffing the air and eyeing the crystal suspiciously. Well...at least it's hard to find, she signs. Wonder what the crystal and the fungus is...

"If it's alright with the rest of you, I'll take point. I cut my teeth fighting monsters beneath the earth, alongside...well, it doesn't matter now. I'll take point."


The fungus grows in spongy clusters along the base of the cave walls. It is light tan in color, and its curved stalks are covered in a fine white fuzz that makes them look dusty.

Boudra:
From the smell alone, you can identify the fungus as Puffball Mushrooms. Its foul smell, when concentrated, can leave a person feeling dizzy, but it is nontoxic.
Although it has no commonly known medicinal uses, when cooked it becomes edible with a surprisingly pleasant, earthy flavor

Bree:
Just inside the cave entrance, where the shadows become thicker, you can distinguish a colony of larger, purple mushrooms that are almost as tall as a human.
You recognize these as Shriekers - a common fungus and underground nuisance known for emitting a piercing, screeching sound when light or movement comes near.
You are able to catch yourself before parting the curtain of roots and vines far enough to expose the Shriekers to the sunlight sliding in from outside.

Boudra steps aside when Thorek volunteers to take point, and she signs, This cave is fortunate: those puffball mushrooms are edible, so if we ration them we should be able to keep a steady supply of food intact!

Caladra sticks her tounge out and pokes one of the puffballs with her sword tip. "I've never been one for mushrooms but I can't afford to be picky now." She says while signing. She then starts to pick some of the mushrooms Boudra pointed out.

"Hold up guys." Bree points out the larger purple mushrooms. "Those guys are shriekers. They make a hideous wail if you move too close, or even if light touches them. They make good sentinels, but are a pain to deal with."

She thinks for a moment. "But...if we set this up right, we could use them to set a trap. We make them scream, the troglodytes come, and we have something waiting for them."

Lily just smirks and bites the edge of her lip. "You Caladra I used to know someone who did mushrooms all the time. He was a pretty fun guy," she says while signing.

She looks at Bree and says,"Yeah that's a pretty good idea though I would like to see what Thorek knows given he has experience with caves."

"Bree's idea is a good one, luring them to us to so we're ready for them. My concern is that there may be traps or other prepared defenses deeper inside, and I don't want to tip our hand too early."

Cyrioul frowns in thought. "We might need to give them a target to chase, lest they simply hunker down and wait for us to come in. Who wants to be the proverbial fox in this situation, though? I'm afraid that it can't be me, but I'd be happy to drop a layer of grease behind you when you pass."

"Our terms it is," Caladra says with a grin and steps forward to volunteer herself.

I do believe i'm probably the best for this. I'm the same speed as everyone as well with AC for the most part, but i do believe I have the highest HP. Plus it I feel it kinda fits with Caladra to put herself infront of others when it comes to stuff like this.

"It seems like as good a plan as any," Cedric agrees. "At least out here we can see well enough without having to dedicate hands to torches and such. I, uh, doubt that the element of stealth would be easy for the group as a whole to use, and I'm hesitant to let people separate out too much."

Once Caladra and the others discuss their plan she waits for the others to be in a safe location. Once she is sure they are out and ready she approaches the skriekers, careful not to get to close. A glowing pebble rested in her tightly closed fist so no light could shine prematurely. She let out a sigh before tossing the pebble into the heart of the mushroom forest and wait for whatever came next.

Cyrioul readies the grease spell in his mind, and thinks back to when he first mastered it...

Quick Daydream:

It was a pleasant enough day at Lirithiel's "tower" in Tamran. The ramshackle structure looked totally unassuming from the outside, like the rest of the flotilla city, but hid the learned mage's power inside. "The only problem with this place," Lirithiel complained, "Is the damned birds. We're a little higher than all the other houses, and the like to roost here when I leave them alone too long. Practice makes perfect - get up there and coat the roof in grease. They won't be able to land on it for a while, you'll be able to practice, and it'll just disappear when you're done. Get to it!"

It certainly was easier said than done. The birds were everywhere, pecking at him as he tried to cast the spell. It took him three days of constantly restudying, resting, and going through a pound of butter before he was able to do it in the midst of the distraction. He nearly fell off the ladder once, but Elhona happened by just in time to keep it propped against the wall.

When Cyrioul finally climbed down after successfully driving away the birds, he was covered in tiny scratches, more droppings than he would ever need in a lifetime of component gathering, and vowed to never eat butter again as long as he could live. Elhona laughed, a full throaty laugh, then dropped a bucket of water on his head to clean him off before dancing away down the lane to their home.

He blinks for a moment a the thought of home, then shakes off the tear stinging his eye before training his gaze on the entrance to the tunnel, wary for Caladra's re-emergence.

Just in case I'm offline later today, grease Reflex DC is 15, and I trust anyone in the group to place it appropriately.

Thorek prepares himself, measuring out lengths of chain for his dorn-dergar as he murmurs battle prayers in Dwarven. The warpriests eyes are closed, but his head cocks to the side as he listens to the others make their preparations. These are good people, he thinks as the battle-calm comes over him. When he hears Caladra pick up a stone he opens his eyes.

Dorn-Dergar is set to reach, when the shrieking starts he'll cast Shield of Faith on himself then ready an attack at any enemies moving into his reach.


The glowing pebble bounces and slides across the packed-clay floor, richocheting against small rocks embedded in the earth.

Immediately, an ear-piercing screech tears through the cave mouth, seemingly amplified by the rocky tunnel walls.

Shriek: 1d3 ⇒ 3

Nothing can be heard over the shriek. Even your own breath and thoughts seem drowned out.
For at least a dozen and a half heartbeats the wail continues. Just when it feels the terrible noise may be endless, it suddenly tapers off - although the haunting echo lingers in your ears.

Caladra waits at the cave mouth in the now comparatively unearthly silence. Clutching her sword, she stares into the darkness looking for...anything.

DM Screen:

Caladra Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Trog Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Her eyes adjust to the darkness within, and a gaunt, spiny form can be discerned against the twisting tunnel walls.
A troglodyte leers outward, carrying a crude spear in one clawed hand and some manner of lumpy leather bag in the other.

Kill it! Caladra hears scream in her head. Wear its skull as a trophy! She can hear he rage calling to her, she wants to listen and act upon the urge but doesn't. Instead she calls out to the trog, "hey you slimey piece of weasle s$~&, why don't you crawl out of there and take on someone who can actually fight!?" she taunts with a cocky fight, arms outstretched, ready to run should it lunge out at her.
