While Cade's reflexes are well-honed, his skill in fighting seems to have come up a little short as his sword whistles through the air. The orcs give great belly laughs and attack. Two swing their greataxes at Cade, but they are apparently used to fighting larger foes, as their weapons swoosh over his head. The third steps around him and hurls a javelin right into Picklebrew's leg.

Eidolons can look however you want them to look. Some people treat them like pets and others use the biped form to essentially play "partners" (I've even heard of husband/wife duos). I've never seen then talk before but that doesn't mean they can't; or at least I don't remember seeing anything saying they can't talk if you want them to unless their Int is too low I guess.

Regarding Eidolons: they can talk, but most people don't play them that way. My summoner's eidolon, Zahaz, talks quite a bit and has a rank in linguistics to speak more than one language. :)

@Thomas: I think your wolf companion still requires a Handle Animal check vs DC 10 to perform its trained tricks, right? It's an easy DC, but since you aren't a druid or ranger I don't think you get the +4 bonus they do, which means you can still blow it on a roll of 5 or less. (also, the wolf can't get to flanking this round without provoking an AoO).

Handle Animal: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13

Picklebrew tries to intimidate one of the orcs, but the creature continues to laugh at him.

Culsar sends his eidolon to attack, which rips into the laughing orc, sending it reeling back almost comically. Culsar fires off a crossbow bolt, but it flies off into the woods.

Thomas readies a weapon and sends his wolf to attack, but it does circles the orc and snaps at it hesitantly.

Skip casts a spell to armor himself.

From somewhere deep in the woods out of sight a soft cackle drifts back to your group. Indeed, someone has been playing tricks. After dealing with the illusionary orcs, your small group is able to travel for most of the day in peace. Following the map is relatively easy, but does take some attention to follow the trail.

Make five DC 10 Survival checks (which everyone can aid if they choose). Failure increases the travel time to the crypt by 3 hours for every failed check, meaning that you might have food concerns on the way back if you fail too many.

As sunlight begins to fade a cold wind begins to rattle through the leafless forest. There is now no sign of civilization in sight. You are far from home and no one is going to come to your aid if trouble does arise. Establishing a safe camp is the first order of business.

Finding a suitable site requires another DC 10 Survival check.

Following the maps requires quite a bit of discussion among the group, but in the end it seems the right course is followed and you make good time. As the sun sets another big discussion is had which results in a nice level spot for your camp, surrounded on three sides by a thicket of bushes.

There is plenty of dry wood to be found to start a fire, and the rations can be cooked into a fine stew if everyone contributes. You finish dinner, then supper, then desert as Kryspi supplies a few pastries. Then, as you are sitting comfortably full around the fire, a howling is heard off in the distance. It is not unusual to hear wolves in the forests outside Kassen, but there you have civilization to keep them at a distance. Out here in the wilderness, the howling seems to grow closer... and closer... and closer... then becomes eerily silent.

Suddenly Midnight Lord, Thomas' wolf companion, stands and stares off into the dark with hackles raised and a soft growl.
