Istiel and Kal'Tos finish the creature off, and the piglets (each the size of a normal hog) approach curiously. They don't seem aggressive as they snuff at the party, but when they reach the corpse of the enormous sow, they begin lapping up the blood that pours onto the ground.

She glances at the head as the dwarf removes it from the massive neck, a torrent of foamy blood pouring onto the ground. "A fine trophy."

The elf looks over the piglets without any interest. "Leave them. They will grow, and one day we will hunt them."

She retrieves her bowstaff from the ground, sighing at the broken string.

Does Istiel have more strings or will she need to wait until she returns to Newspring to fix it?

Good question. On the one hand, I'm trying to be as much of a dick as possible about gear, but on the other hand, I can't imagine an elven archer would wander off into the woods without a spare. An elven archer with a rank in craft: bows, no less. Letting me have my cake and eat it means she doesn't have a spare, but she does have the means to make the repair, easily done in a few minutes by taking 10. Blah, blah, blah.

Cueta runs her axe down the boar's midsection, and then begins removing the animal's innards. Curiously, she watches the piglets lap up their mother's blood, trying to recall if she's ever heard of such behavior. Crouching next to a piglet, she stares intently at the baby, and then reaching out, dips her finger into a pool of the sow's blood and licks the blood from her fingers, trying to discern if there is anything strange about the animal's essence.

Is it coincidence both the pigs and that woman will eat anything? She makes a comment to Tomag. "Pigs will eat anything stationary, Tomag. Had Kal'tos not woken you they would have started with your fingers."

The ranger comments dryly to Cueta on taking piglets back- "If so, they will be your responsibility."

She glances at the bow for a moment, but ignores it and continues working on the hog. "The staff is not broken and I can repair it." While peeling the boar's skin off like an orange peel she adds, as an afterthought, "But thank you."

Properly dressing and butchering the pig will take a day and produce roughly 500 food, @ 1000lbs. It's a bit heavier than standard rations, because it's fresh. Curing it will take five days and will reduce the weight (mostly water) to 500lbs. The cave you spent the night in would make an ideal smokehouse, and is only about a mile off.

I don't, but it only lasts for 2 hours anyway. Without a sled of some kind we can't transport that much weight. Unfortunately I think we have to take the time to cure it, that time will give us the chance to make something to transport the 500 pounds.

A travois is easy enough to make without tools, especially given the glut of hide and tendon suddenly available to you. I would say that it creates "favorable conditions" for dragging, that will cancel out the unfavorable conditions created by dragging meat through the forest on no sort of path. A character can generally push or drag along the ground as much as five times his maximum load. Though Kal'Tos may hate me for it forever, I house-rule that even a dwarf has his movement slowed by dragging stuff.

Istiel watches the surrounding forest, extremely tense. After a full minute passes and no more wolves advance, she speaks. "They find our teeth large. The wolves will continue to stalk and watch for a moment of weakness. Be vigilant."

She gestures they continue moving. "Collect the dead... Our bounty grows."

There's one dead wolf and one unconscious wolf I believe.

Istiel: correct.

Tomag sighs. "Dawnflower forgive me, but without food we cannot survive in this place." The half-orc stays put at the travois, eyes still vigilant for attackers while the others search the nearby forest.

A tiny part of me was hoping Tomag would throw the unconscious wolf on the travois and hilarity would ensue.

Istiel watches the forest with Tomag as the others collect the wolves. She is clearly ready to keep moving. I hope the meat does not attract something.... bigger.

Minutes stretch. The wolves have learned their lesson, and are staying a safe distance away, but they show no signs of leaving. A howl goes up from nearby, and as the other wolves answer, you get a sense of their numbers. Roughly a dozen surround you, but there are others that answer from far off.

Istiel places the dead wolf on the travois, and offs the unconscious canine with a quick blow to the back of the neck with her longsword. It too goes on the pile.

The elf takes her place at the back of the travois, bow drawn and ready. "We must move again. Now." She gestures to the dwarf, before her eyes once again scan the forest.

Still holding his hammer and shield Kal'Tos puts the harness to drag the travois back on and begins moving it as fast as possible without losing any of the load.

Tomag assists Kal'Tos, but makes sure to have his weapon in easy reach. "This has been quite the excursion," the half-orc quips, "But the looks on the townfolks' faces when we return with all this..." he grins, even in this tense situation.
