Cueta sets down her pack and lights a torch, and then begins moving along the walls, tapping them with her axe, moving the torch from floor to as high as she can reach, looking for anything that give can give a clue as to who or what used the caves, and whether there are any caved in passages, hidden branches or tunnels, and the like.

Sorala looks up at the panther in the tree, sitting there fat and content, smiling. "Beware the dead, half-breed," it says. "Things are different for those who have no life to lose." Then it chuckles, long and low, its laugh teasing the back of Sorala's brain like a feather.

Shivering, Sorala stares at the panther for a beat before responding. "My dead have me to lose. I'll trust Garrack - but thank you for the advice, panther in a tree."

Getting to her feet, still drained, the woman lets loose a scream, primal and angry, pulling on all of her rage and grief. And gods damned if a few birds caw shrilly and fly away.

"Thank the Everlight I managed to find you folk... hopefully when we return, the sickness that has claimed Zoriya and the others will have passed," he finishes, his smile looking completely genuine.

Edmund nods to Vallen's report, and looks at the hobgoblins.

"We already know they have ghouls and ogres," he says. "They may have terrible magic or not, but I expect they will bleed. Have you given any thought to fortifying the mouth of the bay? Between the dwarves and the elves and the shark-teeth, it seems most of the danger here comes from the sea."

Rhyfelwr shakes his head, then points at the other two hobgoblins. "Nid ydynt yn diffoddwyr. Byddant yn ffoi. Byddaf yn ymladd. Rwyf wedi bod eisiau i ladd ellyllon."

Gwenci snorts and laughs, grinning an Rhyfelwr. "Stupid."

Cueta's examination of the cave provides little new information. Years have passed since whatever they were stayed here, and whatever they didn't take has rotted away, aside from the bones of small animals that were probably eaten.

Vallen watches the ingots as they begin to cool, scraping the rough oxide layer off the top as it forms. He looks back to Edmund, and scratches his beard in thought. "A great iron chain at the mouth of the bay would do well to scuttle ships, but I am no naval engineer, nor do we have that much iron. A system of towers and signal fires would also be effective for warning of attacks, but... from what we've heard lighting fires is suicide." He frowns, and shakes his head. "I will think on it, but I may not be the dwarf to ask. To be honest, I wish we could move everyone to the portress to the southeast. It was grand, Edmund. We could hold off an army from inside, everyone could live comfortably in the caves, there were gardens on the island.... Though.. I fear the blasphemous dwarves would want it back some day." He sighs, wishing the Illend had landed there instead, Kuru or no.

The priest turns to the hobgoblins, leaning against his anvil. He smiles wearily at Rhyfelwr. "Diolch i chi, Rhyfelwr. Os bydd amser yn dod i basio, os gwelwch yn dda na lladd ein ellyllon. Dim ond tri gadael erbyn hyn." Something occurs to him, and his brows furrow. Huh. If the black birds forced the elves into servitude, why did they kill the two elves that went scouting to the west? Shouldn't they have taken them back to the other elves...? Perhaps the birds considered them runaways... He gives his head a shake, and considers a question for the hobgoblins.

"Sharpeyes, sôn am bydredd o'r blaen. Wedi gweld, beth ei wybod? Mae'n rhyfedd. Beth achosi hyn?"

The cave proves safe and reasonably comfortable. As the party sets off on their third day of exploration they climb down to the bottom of the valley below the cave and discover the tracks of large, cloven-hoofed animals. The trail is impossible to miss, as the undergrowth is trampled down and the earth scored deep in places. It is also recent, as prints in the soft mud by the riverbank still hold the shape.

Previous day:

Vallen looks at Rhyfelwr with concern. They do not trust us yet, even with their history. I do not blame them, for it is likely if we were not so desperate we would not trust the hobgoblins either. The dwarf simply nods his head at the warrior.

Turning his attention to Edmund, the soot-coated priest shrugs. "It would be a large gamble with multiple complications to move everyone there, a gamble we were not willing to take. Perhaps one day a small group could be sent to develop the area, but... that is far off indeed..." He clearly struggles with the idea, and is still not sure if the right choice was made.

The following day Vallen goes to check on Sorala once again- but this time he has some rope and a spell on his mind in case she does not cooperate. He approaches the oak tree she had been... nesting... at, steely determination on his face. She has lost her mind to grief... I will have to find someone to care for her.

The statement was meant to be a joke, but considering the inflection of her voice didn't change at all it's doubtful anyone could tell.

The elf suppresses a laugh as Cueta gets on all fours in the mud, and instead focuses on the tracks. "Hm. A boar. Follow me." As the half-elf wakes, Sorala grabs her staff and uses it to help herself to her feet. Extremely tired, she finds she's barely able to move. Still, the land whispers to her now, the birds are gone, and Garrack sits once again on the haft of the staff, whole and unskinned, his tiny spellbook propped open.

Slowly, Sorala makes her way over to her tea pot, where the historian grabs the days old rabbit and begins scarfing it down, which is how Vallen finds her, on her knees, knawing on the rabbit meat, disheveled and wild-eyed. Putting the rabbit meat back into the pot, Sorala gets to her feet again and makes her way over to the dwarf, using the staff almost as a crutch, and embraces Vallen in a large, soft hug. The tracks are not like any boar Istiel is familiar with, but at least one set is curiously large. The size and depth of the tracks makes her think this creature is closer to the size of a cow than any normal pig, wild or not.

The pace the elf sets leaves no room for caution, and spots the creatures as she comes into a clearing. They are scattered about, digging and eating. There are six piglets that look about 200lbs each, and a massive sow that stands almost as tall as Tomag, and she lets out a grunt of warning and challenge when you approach.

Cueta swings and misses the huge beast, and Istiel puts another arrow in it, and as it snorts and tosses its head at Kal'Tos, Tomag delvers a brutally powerful attack with his axe.

Tomag staggers under the beast's attack, but does not fall. "Ggggrrrrrraaaahhhh!" he roars as he steps backwards and places a hand to his chest. He grunts a series of words in orcish before a soft white light spreads from the hand.

Tomag takes a 5ft. step backwards to E7, then casts Cure Light Wounds on himself. 2/3 1st level spells remain today.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7 brings Tomag to 13 HP.

Meanwhile, back at Newspring...

Sorala walks slowly back to Newspring with the dwarf, using the Garrack-staff to steady herself along the way. Smiling, she looks around the area, with wonder. "I saw, Garrack, Vallen. He taught me how this land will open up, spill its secrets. All we need to do is listen to it. Well, its probably more complicated then that. As for the memorial statue, you see, something you did caused Garrack to reach out to me - through the statue! Notice, he's got a spellbook now. He was whole, then he had a spellbook, then he was skinned and rotting, and now he's whole again. He's on a staff so that I can keep him close, and rather than carry him around everywhere, this staff will help me get him - and myself- all over this New World. I plan on seeing a lot of it. You see..."

And on Sorala rambles about her visionquest, the things she's learned, and what needs to be done next, well into the duo's return to Newspring, where she finds Gwenci and begins his lessons.

Vallen, I think we can spoiler anything else once you are back so you don't have to type it all out on your phone.

The arrow drops from her right hand onto the ground, and she rushes forward as Cueta yells for her to flank. The longsword at her hip squeals as it is ripped from its sheath, and the elf takes the blade into two hands, grunting as she attempts to cut into the boar's back legs.

Vallen looks at Sorala strangely as she goes on about seeing Garrack, and how to open up the land, especially interested in the statue and its tiny spellbook with runic craving so realistic the sculptor is not sure even he could reproduce such delicate work.

The priest looks at her gravely, stroking his beard. "You have proof enough of your claims, but.. Sorala, you must be careful. We have no idea what kinds of spirits inhabit this world, and Garrack... Garrack died under unfortunate, violent circumstances. There are many specters in the old world that are created under such conditions. If it is truly the spirit of Garrack I do not believe he would lead you astray, but if it is a spirit impersonating him..."{/b] Vallen shakes his head at the implications, and believes his warning has been adequately explained. [b]"You must be careful. Sharpeyes said you may come back changed, or crazy... I thought it was the latter, but here you are. " He sighs, running a hand over his face. "You must be careful." The dwarf repeats.

Torag, what have I done? Was it my carving that enabled it? It was supposed to be a simple momento but... it has... become something. I never intended this, forge-father. I only hope this is all part of your Grand Plan.
