The Goblin Cave

Game Master Quillworth

Several adventurers wake up in a cave. There are goblins. Stuff happens.

Wincing from the stab, Eli grunts in frustration, swinging for the goblin’s neck. "Hold still, little bugger!"

Eli's swing cuts the air audibly, barely whizzing by the goblin's neck.

NEXT UP: Xazt!

Male Goblin 3 Fighter (Free-hand)

Seeing that the evil goblin has now fallen asleep in his arms, Xazt takes this opportunity to create an arm bar around the limp neck to start choking the little bastard.

CMB to maintain grapple 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10 (Unmodified again, which brings up a good point that I'll be posting in the discussion forum.)

Edit: minor grammar errors.
Edit2: just to be clear, after making that post in the discussion forum, I did *not* add in my bonus to maintain grapple or anything else in the roll above, so I should have been rolling at a +8

Xazt is able to keep holding the goblin, who snores loudly in Xazt's ear.

I'm unable to ascertain your exact aim in this combat, Xazt. From what I understand, you either meant to pin or to do damage equal to your unarmed attack. Perhaps you simply meant to remain grappling him, which you accomplished, but "start choking" is a little confusing.

Also, everyone should read Slevtard's post on the Discussion Forum (click here) where he discusses good ground rules for rolling bonuses. It would be excellent to have everyone's input here.

Addition: Your circumstance bonus for continuing to grapple would be a +5, not a +2. Also, I'm using Paizo's official online rules, which don't talk about choking out. Here's the link to what I'm looking at. You can move from grappling to pinning, but it doesn't mention choking.

You begin to itch where the dog bit you, and it throws off your concentration a bit. You've had an allergic reaction. Take -2 to CHA and DEX scores for 1 day (or until remedied).

NEXT UP: Lucas!

Male Human Fighter (Brawler) 3

Lucas steps away from the leader, (5 foot step)unstoppering the little glass bottle at his hip. He eyes the 'pet' battling Ariana warily before quaffing the viscous, yellow contents.

As Lucas keeps one eye on the dog, it notices that its master has just struck the wiry human. It quickly (AoO)snaps at the occupied Lucas:

Att:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Miss. The dog's quick snap doesn't even come close to hitting Lucas, as the human easily dodges the attack and finishes off the vial.

Lucas, CLW is 1d8, not 1d20. You rolled a 6, though, so don't worry about re-rolling because 6 is within the bounds of 1-8 anyway. I thought I'd mention it so that people aren't confused later on. Thanks for the update, also.

NEXT UP: Carys!

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

Carys says, "Let ice pierce your flesh." As she says these words, her hand brushes over the pages of her book which instant turn to ice. A frigid wind blows from the pages of the book up on to Carys' hand which is now pointing at the goblin dog. The frost swirls momentarily around her outstretched hand before it blows sharply past Lucas and Ariana.

Cast Ray of Frost. 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

assumed miss

The frost hovers around the goblin dog's fur and falls harmlessly to the ground like quickly melting snow.

Male Celestial Game Master

(It was a miss.)

NEXT UP: Ariana!

Female Human Cutpurse Rogue 3

Flustered by the itching, but noticing Lucas' wound as well, Ariana refocuses and stabs at the beast once again with her dagger, saying, "Luke, are you alright?!"

Attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
Confirm Critical: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Not sure if we are playing that house rule, but I'm saying we are for this fight! That's incredible!

Ariana's rage is palpable. The beast, having turned it's attention to Lucas for a moment, is skewered between the eyes as Ariana's blade continues through, splitting its head in twain. Obliterated.

Not a problem! It makes sense that you should be able to choke someone out. Perhaps make an unarmed strike and RP it that way with a +2 to dmg for choke? We can talk more on discussion forum.

Thank you for playing that house rule! It's one of my favourites. I wasn't sure if you were, but I thought I'd include it as an option anyway. Ryan and I were talking last night, and I said that if Ariana saw him get hurt that badly (die, mainly) she would probably go into a "rage" and might just kill everyone in sight- but this works too! The dice is my friend, apparently. :)

Male Celestial Game Master

(I lost my post from before, but I remember the rolls, so that's why you don't see the roll here.)

The head goblin, enraged by Ariana's utter destruction of his beloved pet, bellows (a goblin bellow is, well, pathetic) and steps forward, putting his weight behind a blow towards Ariana's head:

Att:11

Miss. Ariana easily sidesteps the blow, even while keeping an eye on Lucas. The head goblin's sword swings through empty air.

The only other conscious goblin smiles at Eli's missed attack and chatters a challenge, stepping forward to deliver a dramatically poised blow to Eli's chest:

Att:8

Miss. The attack misses spectacularly, leaving the little goblin very off-balance and quite surprised.

NEXT UP: Eli!

Male Human Ranger 3

"Erastil smiles on me, the clumsiest goblin thinks he can fight!"
Grinning widely, Eli adjusts his grip to return his missed swing back into the goblin's torso.
Attack 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Eli misses by a fraction as the goblin regaines his balance, wary of another incoming attack.

Tightening his grip on the wiry neck, Xazt grumbles a bit as he musters all of his strength to turn this magical sleep to a permanent one.

Edit: Ugh, I meant to do a quick perception check to see if this dude was wearing any clothing that I could tie his neck to the bars with?

Yeah, just before I have to go to work!

Seeing an open path clear of goblins, Carys takes a step forward. She twists her hand above her head as she says, "Our fate is not to fall here!"

At the command words, a translucent shimmer erupts from her book up her outstretched hands and falls lightly on her close close companions.

I agree with Lucas, excellent choice!

As the shimmer settles on her companions, Carys is surprised to feel the book leave her hands and watches it levitate in mid-air. Its pages flip quickly and then stop, hovering in front of her, a brief portion of text on the left page illuminated and shining like a torch.

Language: Elven:
The illuminated text shines from beneath the gnomish which would otherwise obscure it, and reads: perfer et obdura; dolor hic tibi proderit olim.

The head goblin, still having kept an eye on Ariana during Lucas' attack, throws his body to the side to avoid Ariana's deadly aim. As he recovers, his eyes wide and watching Ariana's dagger return, he seems to find his footing.

The goblin near the cave awakens upon being strangled by Xazt, and groggily tries to wiggle free in panic...

Break grapple: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16

Success. The goblin wriggles out of Xazt's choke hold, but can't seem to escape his grasp. You are no longer pinning, Xazt.

The head goblin takes a step away and tries to regain his composure. A terrible cough comes from his bloody face, and the goblin spews something black and viscous through the air toward Ariana...

Att:2d4 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3

Make a Reflex save at DC 13 to halve (take 2 of) the damage, Ariana. Also, make a Fortitude save at DC 13 or you are nauseated for 1 round.

The head goblin, recovering from this detestable display, stands up straight and wipes his mouth which has twisted into a bloody leer, directed straight at Ariana and Lucas.
