The Goblin Cave

Game Master Quillworth

Several adventurers wake up in a cave. There are goblins. Stuff happens.

Male Celestial Game Master

This thread is for the players of the short-run trial campaign The Goblin Cave.

Please think of this story as a one-night campaign. We just want to get everyone used to being on here and ascertain things like the efficiency of the game board, the frequency of posts, and the best format for doing combat. I will not be providing a huge world or anything like that, because we'll be starting the real campaign as soon as we're comfortable with the system and everyone is on board.

That said, please make characters at level one, taking into account the following information:

(Late medieval setting)

1. Your characters were traveling through/living in Snyderholm, a small town in the middle of about 200 miles of unusable swamp. The town is a small one, but usually boasts decent protection for travelers. Most people who are traveling through this town are on their way to Tyridon, a large complex in the east, from the smaller towns on the western seashore. Tyridon has many opportunities for everyone, and is the typical "big city" to those from the smaller eastern shoreline townships. The passage across the swamps, however, usually deters travelers quite a bit, because it usually takes the lives of at least 1/3 of all travelers before they can make it to Tyridon. The Lord of Snyderholm, it is rumored, has offered a reward to anyone who can find the source of the attacks.

2. Your characters will begin the campaign by waking up in a cave. The last thing you'll remember is being on the road to Tyridon as either travelers or transport workers. Your caravan was attacked by something you couldn't get a good look at and then you blacked out.

Please use this post for discussion of how things are working in the campaign. I am open to suggestions, but please note that I have a high will save. I will be using the game board and using the mechanics that I've set up unless they just aren't working. Please post any comments or questions here.

How likely would a boy from Snyderholm be to speak Goblin? I have spent time hanging in caves (dungeoneering)?

If you grew up in Snyderholm, you've probably run into goblin raiders at least once. Five years before the setting, they raided Snyderholm on a large scale, albeit unsuccessfully. A couple people tasked with the city's protection would have known goblin. It all depends on whether your character was an explorer or not. If he left town often, he probably knows a little goblin at least.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Sample skill check:

Sample glances at the soft earth, eyes intently searching for signs of recent passage.
Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7

(It would be possible to also continue role-playing in the same post by adding dialogue. However, because the survival check still needs a result, the dialogue obviously shouldn't reference its outcome.)

See anything on that side of the road, Sample2? Remember, we're looking for anything that doesn't look human.

Male Celestial Game Master
~ GM Quillworth wrote:

Survival: 1d20 + 6

Survival result:
Sample finds little evidence of any non-humans in the area, save the prints and droppings of some deer that look to be around a day old.

In this case, the GM has hidden the survival check. I think that this system will work well to avoid metagaming over things like basic skill checks, but it also relies on the players' willingness to avoid looking at results that aren't theirs.

I should be able to post 1/day

Male Celestial Game Master

Okay, so I want to get started soon. We're just waiting on Isaac for now. I suppose we can talk more tonight.

Male Celestial Game Master

Okay, and we're off! I just posted a brief setting where you all wake up. In person, this would be different, so bear with me.

Do we have our stuff with us?

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

I'm assuming most questions should go here? If so, does our stuff look obviously riffled through or are things just missing? (finally added my gear!

Oh, I should be able to post once a day, but some days I don't really get to be on the computer much or at all.

Female Fox 1st Level Familiar

The fox has a special low-light vision. She can see twice as far as a human in low light and can also distinguish color and detail.

She also has special scent and get +4 to survival when tracking by scent and can distinguish opponents within 15 feet by smell (not sure if that changes anything)

Should I also roll a survival?

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

Also wondering if I'll have my spells per day available or do I have to study after I "wake up" in order to get them?

Male Celestial Game Master

Carys, questions can go on here about how we're doing the game. If you want to ask stuff like "is most of our stuff missing or rifled through?" then you can do that using the Out of Character Commentary mechanic when you post in the main game. To do that, use the tag [ooc] and then [/ooc} at the end.

Thanks for the fox info. So far, you're playing your fox, but I may take over the fox at certain points. For now, you can play it though. We'll see how it works out.

I just figured since I have empathic link, it could/would do something closer to what I want her to do.

Yeah, sort of. It's still a separate creature, though. I want you to roleplay it, but I'll have it respond to the checks that it makes (unless you're asking to see/hear exactly what the fox does). For example, I described her responding to the perception check that you posted for her.

A quick interjection: Empathic link allows Carys and Rhan to get a sense for the other's emotions, but that's the extent of it. There's no real control yet. That would be a handle animal but all DCs would be dropped by 5 or more because the animal is more intelligent than the average animal (which would be a 3).

:P

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

It just seems usually we've played that the familiar's master gets to control it. I would be the one that's spent the most time with Rhan and know what she might do.

I understand though that the DM might choose to override things.

Yes, you'd know what she'd do best. However, she is still an animal and I would like to have her signal you or the group about things that you don't know yet. For example, her bristling in the game right now.

Male Celestial Game Master

Ok, so votes for letting you do your own saves?
I was opting to do them for you, to save time.

1-Yes, let us do our own. It's way cooler.
2-No, I'd like you to do it for me, mister.

I say option 3 - we make our own saves unless 24 hours pass and we haven't posted a saving throw, then you do it. 8)

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

I think we should also vote for other things as well like damage that has now been rolled twice for Rhan.
I vote we roll our own saves and damage and such. For the most part, we can continue on with initiative order and resolve the damage/save later and maybe go back and fix other things later.

Can we roll our own initiative too!

I agree that we should roll our own dice. However, in a PBP, it is reasonable for the GM to roll for a player if said player doesn't post in a goodly while.

Male Celestial Game Master

Okay, that's fine. Here's what I'm thinking, though: if I roll all initiatives at once, we can get to combat, instead of wasting (what could be 24 hours) for everyone to post their initiative. Also, that's an entire post that's just for initiative, every combat.

Saves you can roll yourself, but the situation with Ryan was weird anyway because the save wasn't part of an attack. It just made sense for me to roll it then.

I won't be rolling damage for anyone. The edit you made on Rhan's post had damage, but I didn't see it in time, so I assumed you forgot to include it.

Female Human 3rd Level Wizard

So maybe we shouldn't edit posts and just post again since it seems to be tweaking the way the system works by not editing it for a while. I like the idea of rolling ourselves unless it's been awhile.

Sczarni

Male Human

Ah ha! There's a preview button that will show you your post before you post it! Let's all use that! Exclaimation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does it show rolls? I thought RIck and I tried it and it doesn't show the roll. Also, we should decide when to give out XP since we won't have the natural ending of the night. Perhaps at the end of combat? Unless the combat will lead pretty quickly into another combat.

Going to test out the dice roller

1d20 + 100 ⇒ (12) + 100 = 112

OK, so it doesn't show in the text box, but if you scroll up, there's a preview post with your dice roll! That should help a lot.

Yes, XPs! I totally forgot about XPs! Phail whale. I will now give out XP on the main page.

Jenni is GnomeGrandma. I don't know who Juulz is but the following makes me think this is Marfa.

It is Marf. I was scanning too quickly, saw a "J" and Haley, a rogue, so I thought it was Jenni for some reason. Kudos to you, Marf! Sorry!

NEW GAME BOARD FORMAT:

So, for story mode, we'll be using the game board at points. I think it will make things clearer. I'll use it if I think it's needed, and you all, as players, may request to view the scene on the game board (I get to say no).

The new board is a bit more picture-like, but is still based on the grid from before. Each of you is now a movable picture. To move, simply click on yourself, grab it by clicking and holding at the very top right of the frame that will surround the picture, and moving it to the grid point where you want to be. Once you click somewhere else, the frame should go away.

Here is the link again, just in case you need to find it. I suggest making it a bookmark, along with this discussion page and the PbP itself.

Cheers!

Bahahaha. Not me. I found it now though! I'm here!

Just realized it makes more sense to post here as me and not as Carys. :)

I like things that have been decided too!

This pic make more sense?

Today, in the Snyderholm Gazette, we will feature the first of a series which is aimed at uncovering the truth about some of Snyderholm's darkest mysteries.

Players may make a DC 10 intelligence check IN-GAME anytime they want to "remember" things from the Gazette (which they read during their time in Snyderholm).

THE HUNCHBACK MOUNTAINS: A HISTORY (part 1)
by Abigail Happenstance
....As many of you know, our fair town lies in at the edge of the Lelkan Wasteland, a huge desert which stretches across much of the country. The sprawling metropolises on the other side of the desert are a desirable destination for many who live in the small villages on this side of the wasteland, so we see many travelers come through our town. But something is taking them from the road once they leave Snyderholm, and they are never heard from again.
....Most of these disappearances occur where the road is closest to the Hunchback Mountains, the range of mountains in the west that causes the rain shadow which stretches across the wasteland. The mountains themselves are fertile, but no villages have ever been built there. Scholars and historians tell us that these mountains were once sites of ancient cult rituals, and stories of monsters and ghosts often find their ghastly setting in these seemingly forbidden peaks. But what is the real story surrounding the Hunchback Mountain range? In the following series of interviews, my sources will reveal the startling history behind the bloodshed at Massacre Peak, the mountains' mysterious and ancient Cult of Irons, and, of course, the rumors of the fearsome monsters that roam the tallest peaks.
....Join me in the following issues to understand a little bit more about these mysteries, as we uncover together the secrets of Snyderholm's oldest legends.

Hey, it's Geoff. I've only read the first page of the story so far, but would love to get in on this action if it's alright with you. I'll get all caught up and familiarize myself more with this PbP thing so I'm not a complete retard when I enter.

Also, Ryan mentioned it might be fun if I come into this story as a good Goblin? If that's cool, I'd love to play a story-twist of a character, but would also shape the toon to how you'd imagine the rarely-good Goblin of your world to act. The class is entirely undecided, just know I prefer playing classes that don't rely too heavily on spells.

And also, I have herpes.

Well, Geoff, all goblins have herpes.

This sounds like a great idea to me. We seem to be moving along okay in posting speed, so I think we can handle it. If you don't mind, let's wait and talk tomorrow night about you character and when he'll enter the story. I actually have a perfect plan for that. You could probably enter by Wednesday. Would that be agreeable? Looking forward to it!

Do whatever you like, and feel free to do the good Goblin. I like making stuff like that work. Just read the bits of backstory stuff on this discussion forum and message me on FB with any further questions that would apply to your class. You may need to know more than the current players for your background, so I'll talk to you about that tomorrow. I'd highly suggest using Hero Lab, because that program makes converted enemies much easier to set up, but it's up to you. Classes that would work best are rogue, fighter, ranger (use a goblin dog as mount?). You can talk to me about another class and I can try to make it work, too.

COOL! It is definitely easier than I thought it would be. :) Super excited Geoff.

Small Goblin mounted on Medium G-dog means mounted even indoors!

I think players should be able to roll their own initiative if they can do it in a timely manner. Having the GM roll does keep things moving, but if the player rolls (good or bad) its on them. Whereas, if the GM rolls it, it doesn't feel like you (the player) owns it.

It could also help if Rick could give us something like:

"Ok, this line of action may need to handled in a more strict timeline. Everyone roll initiative. For now though, we'll act out of turn but this way I can post initiative order if it comes to that."

Then we go on playing and if combat happens you can post:

Ok that will start initiative order -

Arianna
Eli
Bojangles
Carys
Lucas

That way things keep moving and we'll know to pay closer attention to the forum for combat!

Hmmm, that sounds like it might work. My only concern is that I want players to have a system that they can count on. Having it go back and forth between two ways of doing things might be confusing, no?
