Hearing Metella comment on the Society's military alliances, Veres seems interested, "Excuse me Metella, if I may be so bold as to inquire about the military alliance you mentioned?"

"Short-term deals are one thing, but a strategic supplier agreement is another. That's how the trading world works - a long-term partner is able to provide better deals due to not having to worry about future risks. The dwarves may not have the lowest prices or the widest goods assortment, but what you get with us is unrivaled stability and fabled craftsmanship. Still, no one is twisting your arms - if you want to keep your treasured flexibility, more power to you - but this choice will also have its cost, as any other."

Veres' question earns an incredulous look from Metella. "Have you forgotten why you're here in the first place? We're looking for the dwarven envoys send to aid your Society in devising a plan to get into the Worldwound. All of this is only possible because of this alliance: we help you explore the lost Sky Citadel, you help us reclaim it."
I humbly refer you to the mission briefing in the opening gameplay post...

"Let me give you something as a taste of things to come - this potion of Bear's Endurance will impart on you the dwarven resilience for a limited time. Should your Society reach an agreement with our trading company, our relationship will be just as enduring."

"Of curse I had not forgotten." Veres begins with her disarming smile. "I merely thought it appropriate to revisit that topic, since you brought it up, and inquire as to more details on the subject from your highly valued perspective. My apologies for not being more clear. You see I have a great interest in what is happening in the Worldwound, and truth be told, I am a great supporter of your side in this endeavor. That said, I do thank you for your offered potion. Your aid is welcome, and I believe it will be of great help in regards to succeeding on this most important mission." Veres finishes with a bowing of her head and a seriousness to her tone.

"Well, my dear, if you want my opinion on the Worldwound - nothing good is happening there and it's not going to get better while the only forces keeping the demonic hordes at bay are the crusaders! Not only are half of them little more than glorified thugs abusing the holy banners for their own gain, but also every virtuous soul that falls there is a victory for the demonkind, while even a hundred slain fiends mean nothing to the Abyssal hordes.
If there is any hope of driving the demons off the face of Mendev, it may come only from a true alliance of all the bordering nations, with actual strategy employed to win the war, instead of focusing on one tactical battle at a time. If anything, the discovery of the new Sky Citadel can serve as a first step to this, with us dwarves gaining the first foothold in Mendev and showing the others that the demons are not invincible and you don't have to be a suicidal crusader to fight them. But even we are not able to outlast the infinite abyssal waves on our own. If the war effort will be undermined by political games and backstabbing - and it always is, sometimes kindled by your Society, no less - then all our efforts will be in vain and many dwarven heroes will find their way to the Maker too early."

The journey continues with no more interruptions, and near dusk, the captain of the boat points out a pleasant country inn up a hill on the north shore of the Glass River, where a small dock offers a berth for the Abacus.

"Well, here it is. We better join Passad below the deck and wait the night out without giving away our presence. Find out as much as you can, and return here after sunrise, hopefully with the missing envoys. We'll do our best not to kill each other in the meantime."

Metella walks away, laughing at her own joke, but Amauhak lingers a bit more and raises his dark finger, demanding your attention.

"We have caused quite enough turmoil on Razmiri soil already. You would be wise to refrain from further violence, if at all possible. Razmirans are not ones to forget a slight."

Nodding knowingly and with a grin to Metella at her joke, Veres is somewhat surprised when Amauhak speaks up.

"Thank you Amauhak for your wise council. We will do everything in our power to bring the envoys back safe, and violence will only be a last resort, I promise." Veres says to the serious dwarf.

Turning to her fellow pathfinders, she speaks in a softer tone, "We had best be on our way to the inn. Just stay with the plan and may Sarenrae bless our efforts."

Veres then gathers her things and heads to the pleasant country inn up on the hill.

Carrick's impressed with Veres well reasoned arguments, places a firm but gentle hand on her shoulder to let her know she did well. Before offering a few more words to Metella.

Having been in the Worldwound myself as a squire for Sir Boswick Bumbleberry, much of what you say is true. But I think you do underestimate the devotion of the crusaders, most there are zealous for the causes of Iomedae, the Dawnflower, and Torag. But your right the Sky Citadel holds the key and there's no room political agendas with lives at stake.

Carrick is first off the boat as the other gather there gear and leads the group up toward the inn. Studying the path and making a note of the number of steps from the boat to the inn.

You follow a stone path uphill under some light tree cover for about 300 steps, before arriving at the wide wooden gates. A sign above the gates reads: “Welcome to the Gray Revelation Inn.” The gate leans open invitingly, and the smell of fresh flowers wafts on the cool breeze.

Behind the gate lies a lovely courtyard, which fills the air with an enchanting fragrance coming from the profusion of flowers planted around it. An oaken door to the left is the obvious entrance to the inn, while to the right are the broad doors of a stable. A smaller wooden gate allows egress from the opposite end of the courtyard, and a roofed well lies at the east end of the main court.

Jacques and Veres take note of the stout beam lying on the ground, which apparently can be used to bar the gate from the inside.

The gathering of people in the courtyard draws the attention of the stable boy, who begins waving his hands as he approaches you. He does not respond to any questions, just grins widely, and without a word, begins tugging at Jacques' sleeve and gesturing towards the inn door. You realize the young man must be mute.

The stable boy leads you inside the inn proper. Dark oaken tables, chairs and benches fill this comfortable, L-shaped common room, and the faint odors of tobacco and ale permeate the air. Narrow windows with panes of smoked glass along the north and south walls allow some light into this welcoming space. An old matronly woman clad in peasant clothing and an apron sits at the centermost table of this room. Her voluminous white hair is piled atop her head and secured in a conservative bun. She wears a red scarf about her neck and a wry smile on her face.

"Oh, Josh, you brought us some new guests, didn't you dear? How delightful! Come here my dear boy, auntie Addas has a treat for you!", she says in a sweet voice.
The mute boy stumbles forward, still grinning, and receives a cinnamon bun from the basket on the table. He beams as he goes past you back out, leaving a trail of breadcrumbs behind him.
"Oh, poor Josh is such a sweet, simple soul isn't he? It's such a pity he can't talk but we've gotten so used to our dear nephew that we don't need words to understand him. Oh but excuse me, where are my manners?! Welcome to the Grey Revelation inn! I'm Addas Grymble, the proprietor. Did you come from afar? If you seek lodgings for the night you've come to the right place! The business is slow these days as most of the shepherds and farmers you'd normally see bustling around the place are all off to Xer for a big market day, so you can choose a room to your liking - and wallet!"

It has been a long trip from Druma, and we have unfortunately become accustomed to meager accomodations, so even a pallet in your common room would seem a luxury to us, though we will gladly procur a couple of private rooms for the group to attempt to remind ourselves of what civilization has to offer.

Rooms for the night, a hot home-cooked meal, and plenty of ale will soon have our spirits high again.

We will also require some meeting space for our evening prayers. We are pilgrims, you see? Come here to learn more about Razmiran to expand on the simple education provided us by a wandering priest.

A pause hangs in the air as Addas Grymble looks over you with furrowed brow, as if trying to make sense of everything you just said.

"Why, religious pilgrims are always welcome, though to get that many of your kind from Druma at once is quite rare. The priest must have been very talented! And to convert such a... diverse flock at once is quite remarkable!
In any case, we at the Grey Revelation are not religious folk but simply serve without bias all who come our way. Hospitality is our creed, though we honor the Master of 31 Steps as our just overlord."
Should you need a quiet place for meditation or prayers, you can use our fireplace den behind the kitchen. Its floor is covered with fine soft rugs imported from Quadira, and kept clean because we don't allow the local farmers and shepherds to track mud in there. It is reserved for paying guests only, such as yourselves.

"As for the name... I'm afraid the original meaning behind the name is lost to history. You see, I am far from being the first owner of the inn - it has been our family business for generations, dating back some three centuries - long before this land was blessed by the rule of the Living God."

"Now, let me give you a tour of the place, while my sisters prepare a table for you." She slowly rises from her chair, leaning on a walking stick and sighing heavily, then shouts in a rather shrill voice: "Tarsi, Eugenia! We're having guests for dinner tonight! Do you have anything ready?"

Two women in aprons, slightly younger than Addas but bearing undeniable familial resemblance, emerge from the kitchen. One carries a large butcher's knife, another's wrists are in deep red smears. The one with the knife also wears a yellow scarf around her neck, which looks oddly familiar - you recall Amauhak draping in a similar one back on the boat.

The other one, introducing herself as Tarsi, smiles a gap-toothed grin. "We didn't really expect much visitors today, what with all that business in Xer. So we were working on making supplies for the winter - I'm canning berries and making jam, while Eugenia cuts the meats for smoking. But we can work up our famous house stew in a moment, and we still have some pastries left from the morning. And once I'm done with the jam, I'll be sure to treat you to a spoonful or ten, along with our cherry cordial! You lot look so skinny, you must have had a tough journey here! Don't worry, we will see to it that you will remember your stay at the Grey Revelation fondly for a long time!"

Addas leaves the sisters to work their magic in the kitchen, and shows you the rooms:

Four small single rooms with a comfortable feather bed each - 5 silver for the night

Three finely appointed bedchambers with richly quilted double beds and fat pillows - 3 gold for the night. One such room is next to the single rooms and to a locked room Addas claims as their own. Two others are on the opposite side of the inn next to the common room.

Two lavish guest rooms with silk sheets - these are the only rooms with windows, tall and narrow. They are also next to the common room and cost 5 gold per night.

"Three centuries?! That is impressive.

This must be a very lucrative location to have supported your family for so long.

Do you know if the building has always been an Inn or did it have some other purpose before your family bought it?"

After Tarsi and Eugenia appear, Jacques will make appropriate exclamations about the offered food.

"Stew, pastries, jam, and promised cordials? You beautiful ladies will spoil us rotten.

Perhaps the jam and cordials can wait until later tonight. I doubt we would fully be able to appreciate them after filling up on your fine stew. Perhaps you ladies could join us and regale us with some stories of Xer and what happens there on market days?

In the meantime, I at least will need some opportunity to work off the stew after eating. It won't serve me to start getting fat now. Perhaps you could allow me to help you hang the meats or carry the finished jam down to the storage cellar?"

I'm going to throw a Bluff check in there to make that appeal seem to really be in earnest.

"I suppose these will do." she says with a condescending undertone.

When Jacques heads out for a stretch, she looks to see if they are being watched before slipping her arm around his.

As she accompanies him, she whispers into his ear with a wicked smile for any onlookers, "You really are quite clever, I will give you that. I think the stable looked interesting as we approached. Perhaps we might peruse it?" she says softly, completing the performance with a quick nip of his ear before pulling him along toward the stables.

As they meander, she searches the grounds for signs of the dwarves or any place they could be held, much like Jacques is doing.

Veres:

The three women seem sincere to you. For what it's worth, you are pretty sure they are not capable of capturing anybody by themselves - whatever is going on here could be happening without their knowledge or consent.

When the ladies are showing you the rooms, you notice something odd about the way the room doors operate: they have latches allowing them to be locked from the inside by the guests, but the latches also twitch subtly whenever madam Grymble moves the key inside the keyhole, indicating that they can also be sprung or released from the outside.

To Jacques, the sisters reply: "You are too kind, traveller. Josh here is more than able to care for our needs. We are here to provide you a chance to rest, not more work - surely you will be able to spend the energy gained while here once you continue your pilgrimage. We don't have a lot of stock right now so the meats all fit in the kitchen. In a few days, when the locals start returning from Xer markets, we will get the bulk of our supplies as payment for them resting here. This inn has been a staple of the local community for as long as we live, and even during our mothers' time."

After the room tour is finished, Addas Grymble also shows you the bathroom, where two large claw-footed tubs are separated by a fireplace. Several metal buckets sit by the fire for heating water that’s drawn from the well in the courtyard.

"Oh no, the scarf was not a local purchase - it was a gift from one of our guests a long time ago. She was from some faraway place - can't quite put a name to it now, my memory is not what it used to be - but she was positively stunned by Eugenia's cooking and left it as a memento before leaving."

EDIT: I suppose you can split up

As the men enter the bath and start washing up, they use the roar of fire in the fireplace and the bouts of loud laughter to cover their attempts to move the tubs around. Sure enough, one of them is easy enough to move, revealing a trap door. A ladder goes down the door and you can make out the outlines of wooden crates, boxes and piles of clothing in the dimly lit cellar below.

Veres, in the meantime, takes an evening stroll in the courtyard. Josh is working in a smithy next to the stables, fixing some kitchenware and making horseshoes. Noticing you, he gives you a shy smile and then returns to his work, blushing. One corner of it is occupied by a small cot and a neat pile of clothing - apparently the smithy doubles as his home. Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Jacques:
You find no reasons to doubt the lady's story - the explanation given is entirely plausible, the inn must have seen some other Pahmet guests throughout the decades they are running it.

Carrick makes a point to pay for the rooms. I think it's my turn to pay, brothers and sisters. And a bath does sound great.

------

Carrick helps Jacques locate the trap door, making sure to actually take the bath to avoid suspicion. In whispered tones.

We need to find a way to let the whole group explore this perhaps later tonight.

"Agreed, Carrick. It is the best lead we have at the moment. We should definitely all make sure to get an actual bath, though."

Jacques returns to the bath and quickly scrubs himself clean and shaves. If there is any fragrance left out, he will be sure to apply a small amount.

Changing into a clean set of clothes, and leaving his armor in the room, Jacques descends for dinner.

Elemenar also bathes, to help keep up the ruse, and joins the others for dinner.

The dinner is sumptuous - the stew is every bit as good as touted and the jam and cordial make for a great finishing touch. You can't help but feel very relaxed despite trying to keep the mission in mind. The sisters eat and drink together with you and seem to enjoy their own food.

Carrick stands up from the table, Well my compliments, that was delicious. While I normally would have another mug of ale, I'm finding myself quite ready to turn in.

He heads sluggishly up the stairs, once out of sight, he jumps up and down a few times trying to fend off the heavy meal and get his circulation moving. Figuring the other will trickle away from dinner, he checks his gear making sure everything is in order, and waits for the others to return.

there are no stairs up :)
Also I assume that Veres wraps up her courtyard exploration and returns before the dinner ends.

"Indeed, you must be tired, and so are we", Addas replies. "It's getting late, we are going to settle down for the night. Try not to wake us up unless you require something - Tarsi can get grumpy in the morning if she didn't have enough sleep, and Eugenia loses her cooking edge! I'll just make sure Josh has everything he needs, and return to join the sisters. Do come for breakfast tomorrow!"

Yes she does. I guess my post never made it. Hitting the submit button is sort of necessary it seems.

Veres eventually heads back in from her stroll in the yard. She sits down just in time for the tail end of dinner and chatting among the inn's occupants.

"I am sorry for the trouble, but I will be taking a late bath. I am afraid the journey was just more taxing than I originally believed. I will do my best to be quiet but I can't guarantee absolute silence. I will offer an extra gold should it be too much of a bother come morning." she says with every ounce of charm she can muster.

Perhaps we can use that as cover for the exploration under the tub...

Gentlemen, let us begin drawing water for the bath immediately. No need to trouble yourselves, Madames Grymble, we can take care of heating water for a bath."

LoL - sorry thought it was 2 story for some reason.

Carrick looks for the stairs, before realizing it's a one-story inn. After awhile these inns all look the same.

Eventually, he finds his way to the room.

As the last sun rays bid you farewell, so do the Grymble sisters, retreating into their room and locking themselves from the inside.
Veres begins her "late bath" and one by one the rest of you sneak into the chamber. You move the tub again, making quite a bit of noise in the process - but the inn stays silent.
Slowly, you descend the wooden ladder into the cluttered and dimly lit L-shaped room below. Crates and bits of furniture are stacked against brick walls and oaken doors lie to the east and south.
The crates contain extra linens and tableware for the inn, as well as a variety of men’s and women’s clothing from a number of different cultures and races.

Everyone should take a section of wall and take 20 looking for secret doors.

Just in case one immediately pops out when we walk down:

"This is an interesting hiding hole. I expect there is some sort of secret way out of here. Or at the very least, a clue at to what happened to those dwarves." Elemenar remarks wryly. He then steps up to one of the walls and begins carefully examining it.

Perception, take 20: 1d20+4 = 24

If we find one I'll try to open it.

If not, I'll move to the door to the left and check it.

Take 20 for a perception check of 25

"Well for one thing, we can see they have been doing this for some time. Based on the many different styles of clothing down here, they have had a variety of guests go missing over the years." Veres says while scrutinizing her section of wall and floor.

"We should go back topside, if we don't find any passage out of here, and do a more thorough search of the grounds. I've been thinking, if I were to hide a secret holding facility, I wouldn't have it under my establishment, though I might hide it near my establishment. This place feels to easily found to be anything other than a normal basement storage room, what with the noticeable scuffs on the floor that any quest might notice."

"In order to discourage curious investigators I would want the entrance to be very difficult to investigate and away from casual notice. What ever seems the most off limits and difficult area should be where we focus our search."
