The female tiefling moves up the stairs, but only so far as the demons below can still see her legs, in a bright, cheerful voice that doesn't match at all the look on her face, "I'll just stand right here. Clean up Below! - SURPRISE

Chancre uses another charge from his newly claimed (and much used) wand. A twisted rapier takes form in the room, striking into the back of the dretch at the bottom of the stairs (the only one he can see leaning over from the top of the stairs). The weapon has proven it's dislike of demons and that continues.

Samirah moves down the stairs, swinging her scimitar merrily into a dretch. Her cold iron blade proves to be the perfect antithesis to the existence of the demons in this world.

Unable to reach the same target as Samirah, Irabeth hunches down and stabs at the dretch to her right, striking from the high ground and adroitly avoiding the ceiling so near.

As soon as everyone is ready...or as soon as someone else in his party attacks or is attacked, he lets loose with one of his circular blades....to good effect. Finishing the dretch at the bottom of the stairs, allowing Samirah and Irabeth to advance further into the room.

Konstantin blasts a dretch with magic missiles. The bolts twisting down the stairs and slamming into the Dretch at the far side of the room.

Miril:
Two rounds of actions when you come back :D.

Clean up Below! - Round 1

Chancre's weapon whips around but the dretch manages to dodge it.

Samirah moves down the stairs, continuing to swing her scimitar into the dretch before her. You could swear you hear her humming tunelessly under her breath. And she drops the demon damaged by Konstantin's missiles.

Irabeth hacks into the same demon, dropping it. With grim expression, Irabeth heavily jumps off the stairs to land to land with a metallic bang in the midst of the demons. The furthest demon falls to pieces.

Roshan throws another cold iron discs over and around his companions. More purple and maroon splatter the walls and floor as demon parts flop and writhe on the ground.

The remaining four demons go, the first taking a step back away from Irabeth and the room, just up to where the stairs open to the second floor fills with a reeking, spoiled egg fog.

Everyone except Konstantin and the unnamed tiefling need to make a DC 13 Fort save or become nauseated (Nauseated creatures are unable to attack, cast spells, concentrate on spells, or do anything else requiring attention. The only action such a character can take is a single move actions per turn.) Even if you succeed at the Fort save, you must make another one if you start your turn in the area occupied by the stinking cloud. If you fail on the Fort save you are nauseated for 1d4+1 rounds after leaving the cloud. Finally, the cloud grants total concealment to everything more than 5-feet away and partial cover (20% miss chance) to anything you are adjacent to.[/spoiler]

In the reeking, disgusting cloud, you hear the claws of the dretchs rip through their own flesh to attack Irabeth. But all are thwarted by the half-orc's armor and shield. (As she hoped when she jumped into the midst of them.)

Kon:
[ooc]Since total concealment thwarts magic missile, please give me a revised round 1 in addition to your round 2.

Upstairs, the tiefling woman moved past Konstantin as instructed by Samirah. As the fog fills the room below, you see her count the bodies in the hall, then she looks up and down the hallway at which doors are open and closed. Her gaze settles on the closed door towards the end of the hall with the majority of the tiefling bodies and her hand goes to the hilt of the long dagger she wears.

Male Human Sorcerer 5/Dragon Disciple 4 (Archmage 2)

Upstairs:
Konstantin curses in Hallit. "If they didn't awake for the battle that already took place in here, I do not think they will awake for this." He pauses. "These others... tell me about them. I don't want to execute those like you, but I also don't want to be caught between two forces."

Upstairs:
She pauses, thinking, "I'd have little problem slitting any of their throats," her voice flat, "however, there may be one or two that removed from the pack would consider a different path."

She shrugs, maybe apologetically, "I'm not the kind that others tell secret wishes to."

Male Human Sorcerer 5/Dragon Disciple 4 (Archmage 2)

Upstairs:
"They deserve at least the opportunity to surrender and be brought to trial." He thinks it over. "It would be much easier, morally speaking, if they awakened and attacked. In the heat of battle, many sins are forgiven. Tell me, have any of those committed specific crimes? Murdered innocents and the like? Those may be dispatched without worry."

Upstairs:
For the first time, emotion really cracks through the blankness of her face. The muscles around her eyes tighten and her forehead furrows. "I think we all have."

She motions vaguely to the city outside in flame and ruins, "I don't think a single one of us made it into the city without murdering some of the people who live here." There isn't any emotion about this, only fact.

Male Human Sorcerer 5/Dragon Disciple 4 (Archmage 2)

Upstairs:
"Yes... but there were those who enjoy it and those who merely do it. The latter can be brought to the other side, perhaps. Do not think of me as altruistic in the slightest. I am not saving you for the sake of saving you. I am saving you because your defection weakens them and strengthens us. Clean up Below! - Round 2

Samirah makes a retching noise and lashes out with her weapon towards where she last saw a dretch. But the attack lacks the power to actually damage anything, even if it were to hit.

It is likely that Irabeth turns greener, but you'd never know for her armor and the deadly swing of her sword. There is the hollow thud of a skull hittig the ground as her longsword decapitates a demon.

Roshan grimaces and quickly pulls a bandana up over his nose and mouth, then wades into the fog slightly more carefully than normal, looking for foes to harry, whether to flank or filet. Golden glow from Radiance lighting up the fog, alerting allies and enemies alike to his presence among them.

Roshan:
Single move action gets you to a dretch. Please feel free to make an attack for this round before you need to make a fort save for next round.

There is movement in the clouds, the demons sizing up their foe, all still focused on the holy warrior with the obvious symbols and the shiny armor. This time Irabeth and her armor take two blows that overcome skill and steel.

The force sword does valiant work in the dark and the sound of nothing cutting through flesh is quiet, but there.

Although she spots Roshan through the fog, Samirah is still incapacitated by her nausea. She swings again where she thinks she sees a dretch, and curses in Ignan.

There is a muted glow from where Irabeth stands, then she swings, but the demon dodges the blow, the nauseating cloud obviously affecting the half-orc more than the disgusting creatures.

Roshan strikes out twice at a small ugly pimple, then appears to be trying to match Irabeth in color. Radiance slices through the demon flesh, but the demon still stands.

The demon beset by Roshan and Chancre attacks the silent man, with no success. Meanwhile, Irabeth's stance against the two furthest demons causes another blow through her armor.

Despite his discomfort, Roshan jumps above the dretch's attack and punches his starknife through the creatures shoulder from above. More purple and maroon spatters around them. And a heavy thud as another demon body falls to the ground to rot.

The lone sole demon claws out at Irabeth, again a lucky strike pounding past her defenses.

From the top of the stairs you hear Konstantin, "Very good. Help me with this." Maybe the sound of dragging.

Konstantin:
The unnamed woman proves to be only of normal human strength, but she gamely helps to drag and stack the bodies before the door, with no more consideration of the once-living creatures than she would deadwood.

Clean up Below! - Round 5

Chancre pushes himself against the walls until he sees the vague form of the final demon. Even off balanced from using physical attacks while levitating, his blow is true with his cold iron weapon and the final demons splashing to the ground.

With the death of all of the hideous creatures, the fog doesn't dissipate, but the reek lessens. Eventually the magically forced fog will ceases, but so far it has only lost its abyssal bite.

When the group determines there are no more bodies, they safely move out of the fog. On the second floor landing they are greeted to the sight of all of the bodies from the hallway now stacked and jammed in front of one of the closed doors.

Chancre is down 4 hit points. Konstantin is down 3 hit points. Roshan is down 7 hit points. Samirah is down 7 hit points. Irabeth is down 24 hit points.

Although the group is mostly certain all of the hostiles on the second floor have been neutralized, a quick search of the rooms in confirmation doesn't take long.

First through the open archway...

War Room

Stacks of scrolls, books, maps, and more sit atop a large hexagonal table in this room. The walls are painted with detailed maps of Sarkoris, over which features of the Worldwound have been painted. Unlike the rooms below this room has not been defiled with rot and filth. Instead, it looks as through the cultists have been culling information - the troop movements of Mendev.

A) Perception DC 25 or DC 10 with Detect Magic:
Amid the thick stacks of paper and parchment, you spot one item that doesn't fit in with the rest. Tight handwriting in divine prayers - a scroll of restoration.

Counterclockwise, the next room is the one from which the winged reindeer was released...

Conference Chamber

A long table engraved with a relief map of Mendev stands to the east in this long room. A dozen bodies lie scattered about the room, each bearing a gaping empty hole in the chest. The bodies prove to be mostly the de-armored bodies of crusaders, bound before they were left in the small room with the monster, but also three tiefling bodies, two female and one male.

Next a closed door with all of the caution and ware attention that calls for...

Library

Bookshelves line the walls of this small library. Many of the tomes have been torn to shreds, and smoldering piles of ashes fill the room with an acrid stench. One small stack of books on a circular table seem to have escaped destruction.

The books preserved on the table prove to be expensive tomes on history, geography and tactics.

B) Detect Magic:
One of the tomes is magical.
B) and Spellcraft DC 25:
And it proves to be a Manual of War.

The next is an open door, the direction from which the lighting flies came...

Aerie

Several stacked horizontal shelves hold a number of small, straw-lined bird cages. A stack of parchment, three quills, a pot of ink, and a pile of tiny cylindrical objects cover a nearby table, while a small wooden door is in one corner of the room.

All of the cages have been ripped open - the fragile creatures within broken, some partially eaten.

Which leaves only two doors unexplored - the one with the barricade of dead bodies and the one behind which your unnamed tiefling defector warned you to expect zombies.

A slightly flushed Konstantin has his hands on his hips, looking like he just helped someone move... a body. Several bodies. "Our prisoner has informed me there are more tieflings behind this door, sleeping. She says perhaps two of them are open to the deal we gave her."

War Room
Konstantin is careful not to fight in here.

He pulls a scroll from the stack and hands it over to Chancre. "This appears to be your purview."

Library
He selects a tome and looks through it.

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14

Yep... it appears to be a book.

Female Ifrit Swashbuckler 9 (Marshal 2)

Upstairs

Samirah makes it upstairs, and looks over the pile of bodies. "They must be heavy sleepers to have missed all of the noise we've been making."

She moves over to Konstantin, and draws herself onto her toes to whisper something to him.

Konstantin or Perception DC20:

"You wear the look of physical exertion well," she whispers, smiling slyly.

War Room

Samirah flips aimlessly through scrolls and papers, not looking for anything in particular, but glad for a chance to be breathing clean air.

Conference Chamber

Samirah grimaces when she enters this room. "Irabeth... what should we do with all of these bodies?" She asks, a little awkwardly, like she's not sure how to approach the topic. "What I mean is, do you have burial customs, or...?"

Library

Samirah pays just as much heed to the texts in the library as she did in the War Room. Maybe even less, since the smell of burning books is distracting her a little.

"Is book burning normal, in war?" She asks no one in particular as she thumbs through one of the unburned tomes.

Aerie

After seeing the broken bodies in their cages... Samirah's expression drops from neutral to sorrowful. She says nothing as she reaches out and gently touches the bars of one of the cages.

Male Human Sorcerer 5/Dragon Disciple 4 (Archmage 2)

Upstairs
Samirah gets a little kiss on her forehead for her trouble.

"I said as much to our nameless friend. Some form of luck held... which makes me think things are going to get bad soon."

Library
"We are told it is normal amongst southerners. In the Skala Mountains, winter is our sword, our shield, and our ally. It does not burn books very well."

Irabeth moves into the room, kneeling down to close the eyes of those whose eyes stared in death, "Burial and prayers that their bodies and souls are allowed peace is standard. The same prayers and fire in this case would probably be better."

"Destruction is always quicker and easier than creation." Irabeth's voice is low, sad, "A single evil can undo the good of hundreds." A soft smile, "Which is why the world needs more like you," inclining her head to the group.

Upstairs

Samirah sheathes her weapon and stretches her arms. "Yes. And normally I would make a joke about hoping they could wait for us to rest and have a nice, hot meal, but..." she sighs. "I'd like to dispatch the monsters who desecrated this place and be done with it."

She turns to the Unnamed Tiefling. "You told Konstantin there were two others who were willing to surrender to us to avoid death?"

She smiles a little in response. "No, I imagine it doesn't. As much as the efreet enjoy burning things in the City... somehow the few libraries that exist have always remained unscathed."

To Irabeth's comment, her smile grows. She inclines her head. "If a single evil can undo the good of hundreds, then imagine what seven good people can do to the other side? Kenabres will forget demons ever existed when we're done here." She puts both hands on her hips.

Samirah inclines her head. "Perhaps, might be willing to surrender, then." She gestures to the macabre barricade. "Do we politely knock on the door and ask who'd like to volunteer to live?" She looks to the tiefling again. "If you go in first, will they suspect something and attack you? Or can you negotiate?"
