I'll be running a beginner's trilogy of evergreen scenario's within the next week or so and will give newcomers the first shot. Looking at running Masters of the Fallen Fortress, The Confirmation, and The Consortium Compact...
That was quick...looks like recruiting may be closed. Got 5 newcomers (either to PFS, PbP, or both) ready to go. I also saw a newcomer post here recently (UlSkadi Rei) looking for a game and pm'ed her...I'm holding the 6th spot for her and will give her a day or so to post over on the Recruitment link above if she's interested...

Hmm
More like, polenta man....

Creme of wheat!?! You gotta be kidding me. Grits are grits and creme of wheat is just a poor imitation.
Now for the big question... What's your take on in grits and cheese?

I love me some grits and cheese...I'm kind of like Bubba from Forrest Gump 'bout grits...grits n' cheese, grits n' toast, grits n' eggs, grits n' biscuits, grits n' gravy, grits n' bacon, grits and shrimp, and just plain ole grits all by their lonesome...

I was a military brat as a kid, so spam was a common feature in my childhood. Had many fried spam sandwiches. My parents were from NC, so grits were common too. Last time I had spam though, about 15 years ago when I was in my mid 20's I got some spam to eat and either I stopped liking it or they changed something.

Both... I'm guessing both.

Ditto, but I need 2 more for tier 4-5 Hall of the Flesh Eaters
Are pirates, booty, jungles, booty, ancient dungeon complexes, did I mention booty, and necromancy your thing? Then it is a pirate's life for you! I'm hijacking (like a pirate, see what I did there?) an scuttled Game Day thread (2 really), and I need at least 2 players to fill some seats. Start time is tomorrow.
Priority to folks who can breathe.

For the last few weeks, the number of recruitment posts has been lower than normal due to PbP Gameday. Since the second half of Gameday is starting to finish for people, I expect that the recruitment postings will pick up again. That being said, it does seem that games fill up fast. When I'm looking for a game I tend to keep the site open in a browser tab and I refresh it every hour or so. Using this approach I've usually been able to get into a game within just a few days (when it's not Gameday).

I've also seen recruitment where the GM asks for applications for a campaign, and then assesses applicant viability against posting history/strength, ability to post a certain number of times per day/week, and intriguing characters that might fit a particular scenario well.

^ That's my standard method for modules and longer scenarios, actually. I like trying to pick a good mix of people with interesting characters to fill a game.
There's also by invitation, where a GM invites players that they loved to come back to one of their games. It's hard to measure these things, but I believe that a very large percentage of PBP games here fill by invitation. The main problem with this method by itself though is that it doesn't welcome newcomers.
And then there's hybrids. This game day I had people who signed up on sign up sheets, and people I invited, and newcomers who arrived at some of my seats via lottery. Often all in the same game.
Don't be afraid to mix it up.
Hmm

This is very common in non-PFS campaigns.

FCFS is my selection method of choice and in the main it has worked out pretty well. I have also run specific sessions for people who came and directly requested them ("Hey mate, could you please run X for me?") and that has been ok as well.
'Submit a character with backstory' to me have been the weakest process in my years on these boards, and I have discontinued signing up for games where this is used as a recruitment method as they seem to generate some of the least reliable players and GM's.
GM Redelia |
For PFS games, I tend to use first come first served, with perhaps a seat or two reserved for new players or a seat or two reserved for people who have run games for me, etc. For non-PFS games, I tend to run things that are non-standard enough that having players submit characters works well. As an example, I have a group of goblins and kobolds playing through an AP. There, I'm looking mostly for players who caught the spirit of what I'm trying to do in a particular game. I don't consider number of posts, but I do look at the kind of post players make.
The Man Behind the Curtain |
I usually use some form of 'rigged lottery' where I'll reward people who have GM'd for me recently, give new players a free seat, and roll for the rest. Then if I have drops or need to fill seats on the last few days before starting, those are FCFS. I used to do FCFS, but I often get the same set of people each time that way. I like to mix things up a bit, but I rarely leave my lottery window open for very long. Nothing's worse than waiting for a week to hear if you got into a game or not.

So far in the few games that I've run, I've filled a couple of seats by invite and then filled the rest by lotto and/or holding spots for newcomers. This seems to work pretty well for me and will likely be the way I continue filling most of my games, as it allows me to ensure that I've got a handful of players that I'm familiar with, who enjoy my GM style, whose play styles I enjoy, and who I can trust to keep the game moving but still keep spots for brand new players or just players that are new to me :)

I think that'll be my method going forward. I've been GMing online for about a year now, and have started to get to know some people. Most have been great, and I have some fond memories of all of my higher-tiered tables. My lower tier tables have been a mixed bag, with my table of Scars of the Third Crusade being my fondest memory thus far.
GM Z..D.. |
I too have noticed the same players at the my tables since I have begun the FCFS type recruitment. So I will probably revert back to my lottery system of recruitment.
I usually do keep one seat open for the newer players so that they feel welcome and get into the swing of things on PBP.
The only time I have done application type recruitment is for the SFS campaign I am running. And yes, I did give preference to those that, a) have ran for me before, b) I know can role play as well as roll play, and C) can keep up with posts and contribute more than just dice rolling post.

So this might be a dumb question since I've only been on the boards about a year. But what exactly is Gameday?
Think of it as an online convention. A number of GMs commit to run PFS scenarios in a specified amount of time, and in return they get the usual Paizo con support--they can get scenarios for free (AIUI; I haven't actually done this), and at the end of the Gameday they get boons. Players also have a chance of receiving boons as well. The last few Gamedays have offered multitable specials of the sort usually seen at a con as well.

Oh that's cool! Hopefully I can get in on a table next time. Thanks for the info. :)

Oh? Players can get boons as well?
Yes. At the end of the game, surviving players can roll for boons. I don't remember off the top of my head what the chance of getting one is; I think it's one in ten (i.e., roll a d20 and two numbers will give you a boon).
