I always use the Flaxseed thread personally. The Recruitment forum is too much madness for me and I'd rather have sign-ups easily trackable in a format that comes right to me with my other PbPs. And this way there's only one thread to track instead of several for sign-ups.

It's all preference, and matching GM preferences and player preferences with each other. I just want to stress that I don't think GMs need to be super inclusive of every medium of play (i.e., posting everywhere like in both gameplay and recruitment threads on Flaxseed, the Recruitment forum, and even other sites like Mythweavers just as I wouldn't expect people on Mythweavers to crosspost here). There has to be a line drawn somewhere.

I mean, we're just trying to run games, not run for political office. :p

Well said. Everyone, use what works for you!

Has anyone done lotteries while holding seats for players not currently in a game? I'd be interested to hear experiences/problems with doing it that way.

Nah, by the time I get to lottery it's to fill seats that weren't reserved by invitation or request. I'm already tipping the 'lottery' in favor of recent GMs, event organizers, or just players that make my life as a GM easier, so I don't have a desire to try to put more stipulations on my recruiting. That being said, I do put my recruiting method in my alias and I try to remember to remind people to read it before signing up so they aren't surprised/upset/angry about not getting in or having their cohort not get in.

Not sure how often https://pbpgameday.com/ gets swept for open seats, but it looks like almost all tables that are marked open are actually full. I spot checked about a dozen, and none of them had openings at this point.

I found this to be true during the last gameday as well. I didn't find it to be a very useful resource at all.

Not for finding games, though they are numbered and if you look at the more recently added ones you can sometimes catch a break.

It's a manual process to close games. Not every GM checks their signups and requests their tables be marked as full.

If there is a full game you'd like to play, be sure to say something. You never know if a GM might be willing to add another table.

One of the problems with first-come-first-served is that it excludes people in less popular time zones.
I have seen games fill up in 3/4/5 hours: that excludes me as a European.

I have been asking people to tell me about games that are full as they find them. Do you have a list of these? I am doing my best to keep everything up to date, but I need the community's help on this.

Hmm

There are also European GMs here. I am one of them.

Weirdly enough I tend to get a lot of people from the US in my games that I advertise as first-come first-serve if I put them up at my evening (which is their afternoon / morning) ...

UK GM here, i have done a few ways, i like Session Trading but I am being careful with this gamesday as I go away to New Zealand on the 6th so don't want too many games still going.

That said my Consortium compact is still open for recruitment, will likely look at it after Paizocon UK this weekend

Personally, I have tried a couple of times to either join or recruit from the open recruitment threads, and more often than not, this leads to rather poor results. I can (and have in the past) say that recruiting from the Flaxseed leads to gaming with a better quality and more consistent table than anything I have found outside of this thread. This community may not be the majority of the boards, but in my humble opinion, it is the best group around. The GM's are more knowledgeable and approachable, and the players are friendlier and generally better role players. The games move quickly with a lower ratio of dropped players or games, and much much less fit throwing.

All in all, I decided a while ago that I would abandon the endless recruitment threads that were just as much a roll of the dice for entrance as they were for quality, and stick with a well established group of players and GM's that were all about inclusion, good gaming, and good environment. You only have to look to the many times where a post is made here asking for help and the almost immediate responses to aid each other to see the quality of the Flaxseed Lodge.

Huzzah for the Flaxseed!

Alright folks! For the newcomer players (or the inner altoholic in you), yours truly is setting up a table (or two) of evergreen scenarios - Confirmation, Wounded Wisp, and Master of the Fallen Fortress. As an alternative, we can swap one of them with Consortium Compact. No biggie.

Signup link here

And, if for some reason, that link is not working as intended: https://goo.gl/forms/8jnTdQ3uP6CZnnui1

For those who are not familiar with them, the scenarios are newbie friendly and I invite any players new to PFS to join in on the fun. Finishing all three scenarios lends you enough XP to level up your newly started character, not to mention MONTHS of play-by-post entertainment. Yes, months. We will be doing 3 scenarios, so it will probably take a while. Keep in mind, that once you start a scenario, the character will be locked in it (ie you can't play the character at a convention, etc) - plan accordingly!

So come one, come all! Leave your fear at the doorstep, and ask if you have question. I consider myself approachable when it comes to helping out new folks.

A robed and cowled figure suddenly appeared in a poof of smoke, holding an inky black orb that seems to reflect the night sky! "I am looking for someone to in an adventure. Will the following agents report here for their journey across the world to the exotic world of Tian Xia! Ietsuna, caps, Blake's Tiger, Amazing Red, J4F0, and Chadius!"

I have opened recruiting for PFS #6-06 Hall of the flesh eaters. This will run for the second part beginning on Oct 6. I am only looking to run 1 table, but could open up for 2 tables maximum if there's enough interest. Please use my super handy sign up sheet below.

Super handy sheet

If you're working on -12, you are not an altoholic. ;)

Depends on when he joined PFS. If his player number is something like 300000, then he's definitely an altoholic.

On the other hand, if his player number is only five digits, then I would expect normally weekly play to have gotten him into the 20s by now.

The Exchange

Well I do only have a five-digit number, but I play PbP almost exclusively which makes the whole process take longer. And I did say fledgling altoholic :-)

I have found the only way to do PFS is online. A PFS started up a short time ago at LGS but everytime I have tried to sign up to play it is always full.

Liberty's Edge

I last played at my LGS a couple months ago and felt so unwelcome by the store that I wont be going back in a hurry.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Alright, let's examine this LGS thing. Sure, online (especially through Flaxseed) I have found I get to interact with very experienced players and 4 & 5 star GM's on a regular basis. I also have far more control over the interaction. I am in my house (or, let's face it, at work) as I read and compose and edit posts. I'm very comfortable in a controlled environment. At the LGS, I have a smaller 'talent pool' to work with, little time for 'role-play' and less control over the immediate location. I have a GREAT store here in Portland, but it does not compare to the nationwide (worldwide) cadre of players I can play with online. I operate with this mantra in mind, assume best intent. The people at my LGS want to have fun, the store wants to make money and I want to play a great game. So, if you've had a bad experience, it's up to you how you want to handle it. It would be great to take the positive aspects of Flaxseed and attempt to incorporate a similar culture at your LGS. As Ghandi said, Be the change you want to see in the world, and/or your LGS. However, I understand that taking on that responsibility is not something everyone is comfortable with.

Looks down and sees where he is standing.

"Hmm...seems I have rambled into more of a "Discussion" tab in the "Recruitment". My apologies." With that, he gets off his high horse and escorts it to the stables.

The Exchange

Sorta curious as to what happened. Maybe as a PM if you want to keep it quiet.

Liberty's Edge

I hear what you are saying Trishadow.

As a Venture agent for my town, I will say this, you might want to reach out the organizers that you're interested. I want interested people to reach out to me. A couple weeks ago, I had enough people to fill to have two tables running, and I was estatic. If I had a full table, and someone reached out to me that they were interested, I'd move heaven and earth to find a second GM and have two tables.

Or offer to run a second table!

I don't disagree. When I found out a new one had started I looked at the Facebook page and it said that day there would be 2 tables of an evergreen. I contacted the admin to see if there were was room. I was informed there was one table not two and that table was full with a waitlist. There was another game set in like a week or so and I asked about that one. I was told it was full but to keep looking. I responded that I wished them luck but didn't have to time to be checking all the time when people at the established tables would be filling up the slots

Passion for the game is something we all have.

Leadership experience and organizational and administrative skills are in much shorter supply.

One way we can work to improve the community is to offer what skill and experience we have to our local groups. At a minimum, anyone able to play has what it takes to also run a well-prepared session of his or her own.

Whether in PbP or in face-to-face play, it doesn't happen unless someone makes it happen.

Kudos to all the volunteers and to those who mentor them along the way. May those who do not contribute have patience with those who do.

Alright, then! It seems we have 7 candidates at the time of me posting this. I'll keep the form open for 24 more hours, in case of some prowlers see it and decide to join in. If we can't fill 12 slots, I'll run a lottery tomorrow and we can have a discussion on the scenarios we'd run.

Just letting you folks know what's up.

I've got a 4 digit number from a playtest a ways back... Then I didn't use it for quite a while. We tried to do a game at my LGS, but dealing with some rather strong personalities led us to drop it. Now we have a home game.

Dark Archive

Due to some confusion about CORE and one player accidentally double booking their PC, I have 2 available spots for my CORE Gameday VI run of the Segang Expedition.

You can sign up here (link).

All right here we go. Recruitment for PFS #5-01 The Glass River Rescue is now open. I have interest for a subtier 4-5 and a core table. I can also run a subtier 1-2 table if there is enough interest. I am ready to start as soon as the tables are filled up.

Now come on and let's have some fun.

Sign up sheet is below

I am that sheet

The conversation on LGS play is now switching to our discussion tab. See you there!

Hmm

Okay then. Time is up and we have 8 candidates. Let's roll some dice, shall we?

6 people with the highest number go.

Lottery:

Rennaivx: 1d10 ⇒ 4
Blake's Tiger: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Matthais777: 1d10 ⇒ 6
JASON RODARTE: 1d10 ⇒ 3
KingOfAnything: 1d10 ⇒ 7
Thrawn007: 1d10 ⇒ 9
CariMac: 1d10 ⇒ 9
ShieldBug: 1d10 ⇒ 6

Rennaivx, and JASON RODARTE - I do appreciate the interest, folks, but we only had 8 candidates and the lottery decided who goes. In case we have a drop out, I'll keep you in mind. Thanks again.

With that said, could Thrawn007, CariMac, Blake's Tiger, KingOfAnything, Matthais777, and ShieldBug kindly report to this thread, please?

New to PbP, but have a decent understanding of PFS. Looking to get a game in for new players before PbPgameday, so at least I have an understanding of what is going on. Any group forming up I am happy to join in, and can play/make just about any role.

If you place "[url=<address>" before your links title, and end it with "[/url", it will display it as a link.

For instance,

TheAlicornSage’s Wounded Wisp

Is done by typing in

[url=http://paizo.com/threads/rzs2uh1b?Gameday-VI-Wounded-Wisp]TheAlicornSage’s Wounded Wisp[/url

by just adding a ] to the end of the last URL cap.

Similarly you can do [b]BOLD[/b, [I]Italics[/I, [s]Strikethrough[/s, and [ooc]Out of Character[/ooc with these codes, likewise just adding in the final ].

Typically in PbP;
Bold is used for in character dialogue
Italics is used for in character thoughts, to draw attention to a specific word or phrase (in place of body language or tone), or sometimes for box text.
Out of Character (OOC) is used for out of game discussions in the game thread, rules clarifications, and the like.

Different folks and also different sites have different general codes and meanings though, so it's not universal, just common.
