To run a non-PFS game, you don't need anyone's permission (other than in a sense your players). Usually, people create just the recruitment thread to start, then make the others once they have players. The site will prompt you with options to create other threads. If you have other questions or want more details, I'd be happy to talk by PM.

By the way... This holds true for almost all PFS games too! So long you are abiding by PFS Rules, I will tell you that you have permission to run most PFS adventures. Huzzah for new GMs!

There are a few exceptions to this:

  • Multi-Table Specials.

We usually have GM signups for this because we want GMs who have some experience with the quirks of these. So advance permission from the Overseer is usually needed.

  • ’Gated’ Specials.

There are some scenarios that can only be run by 4 star GMs:

#6-98: Serpent's Rise (Levels 7 Special Pregens Only)
#7-98: Serpents’ Ire (Level 8 Special Pregens Only)
#7-99: Through Maelstrom Rift (Level 6 Special Pregens Only)

And this one, only by 5 star GMs:
#6-99: True Dragons of Absalom (Level 4 Special Pregens Only)

  • Off-Limits for PBP

Due to its strict time limit, the entire Bonekeep series is not approved for Play-by-Post, though you can experience it in Virtual Table Top!

EVERYTHING ELSE THAT IS SANCTIONED IS OPEN, but talk to us about good starter scenarios if you are a first time GM!

I spent 15 on one character to retrain 3 feats, 10 on another.
Even if you buy 4 or 5 wands, you still have over 30 PPs left at level 8.

    ...Important qualifiers there:

    1. Have never died
    2. Earning close to maximum rewards every scenario in addition to expenditures.

...this does not always work out quite like that, nor nearly that easy in some cases.

What is the difference between running an AP in PFS 'Campaign mode' and just running a homebrew AP?

As far as I can tell the only difference is whether the GM passes out chronicle sheets at the end. Is there something I'm missing?

That is pretty much it from my understanding.

GM Ewok: That is indeed the main difference for the players. They can also receive credit only once.

For the GM there is one other difference: when ran in Campaign Mode he also earns progress towards PFS GM stars.

I didn't realize True Dragons of Absalom was limited to 5-star GMs. Is that a recent(ish) development? I played it at GenCon a few years ago, and the kid running it didn't seem all that experienced. (Still had a blast, though; I highly recommend it!)

    Grand Lodge

    He/Him Human

GenCon and PaizoCon are the exceptions to that policy, as there are not enough 5 Star GMs to fill all the tables that are expected by the GenCon staff and PaizoCon players.

Talking of the special, I noticed the signup sheet is now view-only. Is there a reason for this?

I believe the signup sheet is read-only because all the GM slots are full, and player signup has not yet started.

I have been looking on the boards for answers but haven't found any official PFS rulings, just debates:

Scizore:(besides that is turns out to be more of a pain than it's worth)
    1. Do you get the AC bonus if you aren't proficient with it?
    2. Are players considered ambidextrous-Use a scizore as the main attack one round with an offhand weapon then turn around use the weapon you previously used as an offhand for your main hand attack weapon and use the scizore for its shield bonus...etc.
3.the Called magic weapon property-it seems the whole reason for it to be "teleported to the wielder's hand" is to be ready for attack, but you have to don a scizore. Does a scizore with the called property appear in your hand, strapped on, ready to be used for attack?

Is wearing a Gauntlet enough to avoid the need for a reflex save when wielding a Chakram in melee?

If I should take these questions back to the messageboards let me know, and I apologize. It just seems the PFS experts are here!

    Lantern Lodge

    SFS 05-99 BftB

    For the Scizore..
1: I don't see why not. the Scizore is an armored sleeve. What I find interesting is that it doesn't have an ACP or arcane spell failure chance. Effectively it seems to be a light shield you can attack with and not need proficiency.

2: There is no "handedness" in pathfinder. If you are attacking with it, and you are not a TWF character, it is your primary attack. If you don't attack with it, you get the shield bonus.

3: I would argue that a Called scizore would appear in your hand, but not donned. That said, for a +1 bonus, it wouldn't be that unreasonable to have it donned as well. If this were a non PFS game I'd just not have the things in it at all - or alternatively make them an exotic weapon.

4: The Chakram says you only don't need to make the save if you are wearing heavy armour. So I'd suggest a gauntlet by itself was not sufficient.

Not that any of these are PFS specific.

Honestly, I think the Scizore shouldn't be used. A martial weapon doing 1d10 damage one handed with the performance characteristic as well, and then giving a shield bonus to boot. It should have been exotic.

I'm kind of surprised I've not seen a TWF with these yet. They put the bastard sword to shame (yes, yes I know they only crit on a 20).

Probably people are turned off by the -1 to hit-- it's like a bastard sword attached to a buckler. Buckler users are a dime a dozen, but not may of them try to attack with the same hand. As for TWF, it seems to me they're strictly worse than a bastard sword; -4 for being one-handed, and -1 for being a scizore.

Sodium do you think Swashbuckler finesse overrides the TWF significantly enough?

    ★ - CHRONICLE SHEETS — ATTENTION ALL GMS - ★

    Hey Gang —

I’ve recently gotten some complaints about sloppy and incomplete chronicle sheets, or cases where a single chronicle sheet (with no identifying top matter) was issued to all players. This makes me a cranky-pants VC. Let’s not do this.

    ★ --- ★ --- ★ --- ★

ALL chronicle sheets issued through this lodge should include:

    • The personal information of each player character on the top — player name, character name, organized play number, faction.

    • All grey parts filled out. Please... We need experience, prestige and money filled out. Day jobs too. If they have no day job, cross a line and still initial the box.

    • Event numbers, event names, GM signature, GM number.

They also need to be LEGIBLE and if sent as a PDF, they need to be flattened so that they are INEDITABLE.

BONUS POINTS! If you want to earn our RVC Jesse’s seal of Approval, you’ll fill out all the other parts too just like in the Roleplaying Guild Guide.

    ★ --- ★ --- ★ --- ★

You may be wondering... Whom does this hurt if chronicle sheets are sloppy? The answer is that can cause all sorts of confusion, mistakes and issues down the road. Sometimes people have errors that compound themselves. Sometimes there’s a character audit, or a Convention when people print out their chronicles to use in Face-to-Face play.

Also... The folks who get stuck doing most of the chronicle repair are your venture crew.

Please... Help me change out of my cranky-pants! Fill out your Chronicle Sheets correctly!

    Thank you!

Does FoxIt have a way to flatten things easily? How do others do this?

And to answer my own question: If I add a small signature and apply it, that does the flattening.

(yes, I know I add a sig anyway, but I typically do this first into a blank chronicle which I then customize for each character in the scenario - one of those small efficiencies that reduce paperwork time)

So.. I'm very crude with technology, used to print and scan all chronicles but found that tedious and moved to Microsoft paint, files saved as png. How do I make those files ineditable after completed?

    Year of Boundless Wonder

I use Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (free), using the Fill & Sign functions. Once everything is filled in, including adding signatures, after saving, the fields that are already entered can't be edited. I only learnt to use this recently though, and hope I'm doing it right.

As you mentioned, you can use "Sign&Certify" and then select "Lock Document After signing" in Foxit's tools.

You can also simply "Print to PDF" the PDF form and it flattens and optimizes the PDF - that works from, pretty much, any PDF editor and is straight forward.

Image files are already "flattened" by their very nature - so you're good. The issue mentioned above is related more to the distribution of fully editable PDF forms. Open PDF forms are, basically, like a chronicle written in pencil.

    Note:

The SFS guide to organised play puts a bunch of the onus on the players to sort out key information on their sheets, such as tallying totals for their relevant factions etc.

It’s a little different from PFS and can catch people out :)

There isn't a way to lock them from editing - anyone could bring them up in paint and edit it the same way you did.

    The Waking Rune

    Hi folks.

I've just set up my first pbp campaign. But two of my players can't post to the Gameplay thread. Any idea why this might be and what I can do to fix it? Did I screw up the set up?

Venture Lieutenant, Play by Post (online)

Did you delete the first post in gameplay? That seems to be a frequent mistake, and it does mess up the thread until someone working at Paizo can fix it.

    The Waking Rune

Nope. I saw that was a pitfall, the first gameplay post is intact.

Each post on the same page must be unique. It looks like one of your players simply wrote "dot". Your other players must write something different. This is an anti-spam measure. Make sure each character is writing something unique from all the other posts on the same page. Have them write their character name and then the word "dot" to make each one unique.

Thanks Hawkmoon, I didn't know about that. I'll see how that works out. Much obliged!

Is that strictly for Official PFS threads or all of them...I think you just saved me some trouble on my first (nonPFS) endeavor...thank you

Is it possible to set up a private table within a public feed?

I don't suppose there will be a PbP Convention during the winter months? Does anyone happen to know of a convention in need of GM support in the Greater Cleveland area during the same time period?

The only one on the horizon is Shifty’s Race for the Runecarvied Key, and we’re waiting to find out what they will offer for Convention support.

Winter conventions can be hard to find (there are non local to me in Minnesota) but it might be worth checking with Bob Jonquet to see what he knows of in Ohio. That said, on the VTT side of things there is TPkon.

Gummy Bear if you dont mind the 4 hour drive to Cincinnati it looks like A Queen City Holiday 2017 is happening the 15th through the 17th of this month.

Appears to be a mini con of sorts with about 19 tables on their Warhorn.

I have been asked by Silbeg to clarify this statement. Although Minnesota has Con of the North, a convention in the middle of what certainly feels like a wintry February, it is usually too late to qualify for winter boons. Instead, we usually receive boons for the Spring Quarter there!

Gamicon in Iowa shouldn't be too far from you but usually runs around a similar time frame in February. 1st to middle week. Last one I went to I believe we had over 20 tables at the special.

    Ooh!

Redelia wrote a Guide to Dungeon Crawls in Play-by-Post. It’s nifty. We have shoved it in the GM Kit for now to make it easy to find.

Speaking of the GM Kit, the team who has been writing up pre-formatted pregens have been very busy. I don’t see all of them in there yet, but they have a very good selection of pregens in there right now. If you have new players who need to play a pregen, you can send them over there to find one.

Hope the holidays are treating you all well!
    Hmm

PS Do you have an idea for a Guide that would be useful to the GM Kit? If you have created some useful content that we should know about, please let Redelia or me know.

This might already exist but I've seen newer GMs having problems putting up and fully utilizing maps and slides.

I'd like to try GM-ing PBP but I could really use a guide that explains the practical stuff in a non-technical way. Like: how to set up the maps or handouts or put icons on a map or create the initial area for the game that includes separate threads for gameplay, discussion, etc.

Some of this is included in Hmm's PbP GM Kit.

As for creating the game, I personally start with the discussion tab as I use Google Sheets for the majority of my recruitments. Which ever 'tab' you start with for your game, you just go to that section of the forums and click 'Add New Thread'. You have to post something when you do this, otherwise it'll delete the entire thread.

The system will prompt you to make the additional tabs.
