So a while ago there were a couple solo games started here which I thought was a really great idea and now I want to try my own which I have been working on. So if you like going solo, teaming up with some NPC's occasionally, fighting enemies without worrying too much about other PC's then apply here. This is my first time homebrewing up a world so for now it is not the most detailed but let's give this a chance here.
I want to use the P6 limit to reflect the low level of magic here. We will also use automatic bonus progression +2 but that is a special thing that will kick in hopefully after the first scene. For the starting character creation you are a basic NPC class (Adept, Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert or Warrior). We will use background skills as well. An unknown, unimportant, practical nobody thrust into adventure, danger, magic and more. Gaining PC classes will come at the same time as you get automatic bonus progression.
You currently live in the large town of Loam(pop. ~3,000), a vassal to the current human controlled empire you live under and are protected by. Your city is usually well protected by the outer cities and fortresses and not under much threat from war or raids. Thus peace reigns and though the empire's laws are tough, most everyone is content . Unfortunately, this is shortly to change(spoiler!). You have spent your whole life here so far, or in very close proximity (farmers, woodsmen, etc.) and never having occasion to travel away from home. Maybe your parents or family immigrated or something like that if you are not human. Non-humans are treated mostly equally throughout the empire if they aren't criminals, though the more monster like races like orcs or dhampirs and the like will be less trusted. If you ever venture outside the empire though this will change for better and worse. In the elf lands almost everyone else is distrusted for example.
Magic here is weak. Spells beyond 3rd level are rare but possible through, for now, unknown means. Certain monsters, demons, dragons and the like are the only ones with greater power. This also means magical items are mostly rare. Those of level 6 power are the weaker heroes and villains of the world. More powerful champions can attain bonus feats, gestalt levels, templates and mythic tiers. It is rumoured that the Emperor is one such powerful individual.
If you therefore decide you are interested in trying this out with me then submit a backstory, 2-5 paragraphs will be acceptable or a 10 minute background will also suffice. Character sheets aren't important, after all you are level 1 NPC's for now and stats are (13,12,11,10,9,8) plus racials. I will say that anything on D20PFSRD is ok to plan your character around if that helps you build your concept and future character path). This will be a duo game only if people submit characters together that are connected somehow. If the character I like best is submitted on its own then we play solo. Please ask questions for clarifying.

DM HolyWater |

That's a fair point. I will clarify and say that soon after the first scene you will be swapping your NPC class and stats for PC class and stats.
Say you are an apprentice to a wizard but your magical skill isn't yet a stable thing and you haven't been granted knowledge yet of the ritual to bind a familiar. A warrior who becomes a fighter or barbarian or an expert studying alchemy. How about a commoner or noble who discovers latent sorcerous or psionic talent. So what I'm hoping to do is to work with you guys to come up with a fitting personal reason that brings out your inner champion that you didn't know you had.

I would be interested in this sort of game, though I feel there isn't much for me to go on in terms of making a backstory. Would you like me to make stuff up/add to your world? Or do you have a lot of material you're not sharing at the moment?
I've been thinking of playing a monk. I have a write-up for a game I never got into. For starters I'm thinking of rewinding his story to before anything happens to him and he lives the boring life of an orphaned monk whose monastery makes fine whiskey and carpentry. I would be thinking of a 13 or 14 year old (thus with the young template) human warrior with Improved Unarmed Strike (from limited hand-to-hand training). This could potentially be fodder for turning Cleric or paladin as well.
Maybe that, or maybe I think he could be even more normal. Some commoner layman's apprentice who was stuck and was learning to be okay with basically being a slave because it would mean in the future he could take over or start his own business. Or his family owns or works on a remote-ish farm near enough to the city to bring crops to market. Or he's an urchin pickpocket in the city depending on how large and/or corrupt it is. In any case, through violence done to his and vows of revenge, he would find a monk mentor in the future who could teach him the secrets of ki and Martial Arts. Maybe his mentor will have been an exile looking for purpose, or maybe someone even less savory looking for the right apprentice to find an attack dog or possibly a successor in his deadly art.
How much do you like any of those ideas? Help me mix and match a bit. I'd be interested in having a duo campaign, since you have enough interest probably. My potential monk could easily be connected to Archae's Sylph. They could have been recent friends if mine was a commoner or perhaps the monastic one could have been the second son being sent off to avoid conflict between the brothers when they come of age to inherit.
I'm also thinking of a boy who finds an ancient sentient sword which slowly pushes him into studying the occult until they can communicate freely. A commoner or expert who transitions into Magus (Black blade). The sword perhaps has a destiny to raise a hero from nothing and seeks out a pure-hearted youth who will be able to resist the darker pulls of magic to vanquish evil. This one feels a little vanilla but vanilla can be fun. Twists can be added after the fact anyway.

Cool cool cool. I'll totally shoot you a PM. For clarity's sake, are you shooting for something in the wizardy department? Or rather, why Sylph instead of human or any other planetouched?
Also, I got so excited I forgot to ask about posting rate. Would it be too much to ask for one post a day minimum? Even if you can't write a full post that day or you feel you should wait for someone else to post, I feel it's good to at least communicate and tell the other persons that; just mention something ooc in the discussion thread. Keeps the ball rolling and whatnot.

Are these the ... P6 ... rules you will be using? I am currently in a modified M6 game (Partially Home brew Mythic + P6) and it is awesome! These characters will even be weaker and can be lots of fun which is the goal of P6 (M6) anyway. The most fun happens at low levels. As you gain levels, sure there are cool things but there is more to watch and worry about for all.
Are you going to permit 3rd PP from d20PFSRD as well?

Archae |

DM HolyWater |

@Archae You will be getting feats every level so an archer could work with almost any class. There is a city not too far from Loam where most of the food exports from the farms go and there is a large bureaucracy and nobility population there. Probably two or three days travel.
Kubular That's a lot of ideas which is great so let's try to narrow it down.
Being a young student monk is ok, there aren't any dedicated monasteries but there would be a teacher in Loam(probably only 1 though).
Being a farmer is a very easy idea as you may have guessed from the name 'Loam' that the whole area is very fertile and they make lots more food than they need and there is plenty to export.
If you want to be an urchin take in mind that there is only around 3,000 people here. There will be some poverty almost everywhere though Loam has kept away corruption for now but there definitely are a few 'unsavoury' types around doing their best to gain power.
Becoming a black blade would be quite easy and not even need a teacher as the blade would become that.
@Anderlorn[/b] Yes I will be using that stuff too and am planning for possible mythic as stated in my first post. Basically anything is possible here as balancing around 1 character is a lot easier and worrying about one person being overpowered compared to the rest of the party becomes a nonissue. Everything on D20PFSRD is ok unless I decide otherwise. Good idea though to be a humanoid or someone that can fit into a mostly human society for the start. But i'm willing to discuss whatever ideas people come up with.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll be able to cast them as soon as my NPC class gets exchanged for my class level. It seemed a bit too pedantic to restrict a feat that I can't even use yet for a state that my character would be in only briefly. If it's a concern, could I just wait to take my feat until I exchange my class?

Zayne Iwatani |

I have two ideas. Both are characters I submitted to other games but did not get in to. The first would be good for a duo game. Michael almost requires a duo game and some leniency on the DM''s part (Letting him use his instrument for verbal components and prestidigitation for communication). That or he can carry a chalk board. The backstory is geared towards the game but the concept is there. His partner would obviously be his love interest.
The other, Will Erland could be either. Lazy son of a farmer who has more children then he can keep track of. Will slacks off and runs across one of these legendary hero's, sees what the man is capable of and tries to emulate it. Still lazy in most interactions but is a committed to martial superiority.

Rorrix |

I had considered Adept, but it didn't seem right to change from a prepared divine caster to a spontaneous psychic caster. Plus Expert fit his background better and allowed for a setup of latent casting ability to be unlocked.
I'll pick a different feat for him and swap it when appropriate, thanks again for the quick responses.
PS: I'm open to teaming up if anyone is interested.

DM HolyWater |

Anderlorn It wasn't a 'deadline' but just an approximation. We don't have too many people submitting so once there are 4-6 finished submissions I will probably close recruitment then.
Zayne Michael seems like the more interesting character though perhaps the backstory can be rolled back to before he gets his magical ability and this can happen in game? Also not being able to talk will be a big obstacle as this is not doable with prestidigitation or any cantrips.

Zayne Iwatani |

Prestidigitation could actually work and it was I originally used in a the one game he got in. It says you can make small, crude objects so why not some words? Or just add a new trick in the list and say you can write in the air with smoke or lights. Dancing Lights can create a "vaguely humanoid" form so it might be able to make glowing words. Drawback would be that he can't "speak" to others and use it for light at the same time. Ghost Sound would also work.
But all of these work under the assumption I can replace the verbal component for all spells with music from his guitar. Maybe make it a feat or trait. He would still be subject to things like Silence and Mute too.
But before he can cast he would need to resort to a journal or chalkboard. That or a partner. One who has taken sign language or Bonded Mind teamwork feat.
Obstacles yes, but not impossible. And maybe during some important moment he finally finds his voice.

DM HolyWater |

Zayne I guess after thinking about it there are a couple options to communicate with people, albeit nothing as fast as normal speech. We would roleplay in game getting your bard magic if that is your first PC class.
Ghost Sound only sounds like speech FAQ.
Dancing Lights vaguely humanoid form will not create complicated shapes such as letters or words. The four lights do move fast and could possibly be used to trace words in the air.
Prestidigitation I would allow to create colour effects in the air or on something(paper for example).
Interest so far
If everyone on this list gets their character backstory in I will probably close recruitment and start from there.
Inxpitter - interest
Archae - Runaway Blacksmith
Rorrix - Wannabe Fortune Teller
Anderlorn - interest
Zayne - Mute travelling Musician

Mine will be a Wondering Monk Animal Trainer
I am going for a Monk Sohei (would the Monastery gift a horse to my character or do I need to purchase one? Maybe I will take Rich Parents, rename it to Animal Trainer Earnings, keep a little, and donate the rest). I plan to take the Monk Vow of Poverty.
@Archae - if a monastery does not fit your character, we met through me training your chosen mount.

Archae |

@Anderlorn I got a bit of an idea for the how we met thing, it can work sort of in conjunction with your monastery . the base idea is during his running away thing he stayed at a monastery for a short time. the two of us met during that. became friends through something along the lines of competition or personality differences like Ciro being relatively carefree and irresponsible. throwing something some things out there . But yea the monastery thing he might top there for lodging but probably not be from one.

Anderlorn |

DM HolyWater,
Archae and I are ready to be submitted as a Duo.
Ciro Aldrich (Air) ... And ... Æven Ægir (Water)
Two life giving elements.
