Let's begin.
Enrico- Having recently arrived in the Fort, you investigated possible jobs and found that the sage Abernard Royst is looking for adventurers to map an ancient ruin known as the Emerald Spire. Curious, you go to the sage's home to find more.
Karist- You are currently at the Sage's house, helping him study a green shard the may have come from the spire, when you hear a knock on the door (Enrico)
Thoril: You are sitting at the Juliver Arms inn, when you noice a poster on the wall.
"Missing wizards in Emerald Spire. 2000 gp reward." You then find the emissary from the order to learn more.
Corath- Signifer Oritian Hast has given you a mission: The Emerald Spire. Eliminate the bandit threat there, learn about the hellknights who were there, but most of all learn about it. You won't be able to do this alone...

"Master, I can see to who it is at the door, continue your study of the shard," Karist pulled down his sleeves as he headed to the door, the broom he was using fell against the corner of the shelf and wall. While here at the Fort, there were not many inquiries about the brand on his forearm, but he never knew who might recognize it and think he was a bounty worth pursuing.

He heard the knock again, not necessarily annoying, but persistant. "One moment, I am coming, just a moment." He yelled at the door's interior side and quickly unlocked and unlatched the iron works that allowed him to open the door.

Standing before him was a half-elf man that had the bearing of someone familiar with a fight. His hand was still in the form of a half fist as if he was going to begin knocking again, but was stopped mid knock by the door swinging open before him.

"Can I help you, good sir?" Karist had opened the door enough to where he could be seen but not enough to where the visitor could instantly push through into the Sage's home.

For starters you can open the door, or at the least stop barring my way, the half-elf says, brushing his hair away from his eyes.

I'm looking for Mr. Royst--heard he needs a few...enterprising folks to map out the Spire. Now that I'm here, he needs one less. So, are you going to take me to him, or what?

The swordsman leans forward a bit, tapping his foot and apparently a bit annoyed at having to wait.

Karist shook his head in disbelief at the man's approach.

"Well, I can check with him to see if he in fact is need of help, or rather was looking for help that would be useful, if I could but ask you name and that you stay here for a moment longer?" Karist smiled politely and stares at the man leaning inwards.

He moved his left hand to the back of the door in case he needed to close it while he relayed the information to the Sage.

That reward would be a welcome addition to my pockets. I can't maintain this standard of living for much longer. Thoril moves over to the front desk, his interest piqued by the poster (and the reward). "Pard'n me, Mr. Reedbank. D'you know where I could find this Starcloak person mention'd on that there poster?"

I'm assuming it's Doliver Reedbank at the desk for simplicity.

The Taldan rolls his eyes, but stays put. He chuckles derisively: If he wasn't looking to hire, why would I come here? Sure, go and fetch him. The name's Enrico, though I doubt he's heard of me. I'm not from around here.

Karist closed the door, latched it, and then walked back to the room that the Sage was working in. The man had the green shard in his hand and another on a book.

Master Royst," Karist spoke aloud and the man looked like he had not heard him, "Master Royst, sir, there is an adventurer looking to be hired named Enrico at the door for you. He seems a bit, demanding even impertinent sir, but he said you were looking to hire folks to map out the Spire."

Karist caught the eyes of the Sage who had broken his intense study and smiled as he awaited an response.

Thoril-Reedbank sends someone to go get the wizard, who comes quickly. "So I understand you were interested in finding the wizards?"
Karist"Excellent! I'll come immediately." The sage hurries to the front door where he greets Enrico. "You are an adventurer looking to map the spire? Excellent! I'll pay you for each level you map, starting at 100 gp, going up to at least 10,000 for the last."
yeah, this guy's ridiculously wealthy.

"Aye, I would be. D'ye have a description of the missing people, so's I can recognize them when I see them?" Thoril frowns, thinking. I'll have to find companions, too - I've heard the spire is a dangerous place to be alone.

I plan on having Thoril end up in a tavern/bar to look for fellow adventurers. If anyone wants to meet me there, that'd be nice. If anyone has other ideas, I'm not committed to the tavern idea yet.

Male Human

The wizard gives a good description of the wizards Jharun and Tiawask, and gives you a few other details. "The wizards left nearly two weeks ago, so they may well be dead. We will still pay the reward for the body, however. Another thing to note is Jharun and Tiawask were investigating the spire's portals. We are still interested in this research, so will also pay research should you happen to find some in the spire."

Enrico raises his eyebrows at the man's enthusiasm.

Very well, I thought there would be some sort of demonstration of my skills required. So, who else will be accompanying me?

Thoril, either your contact or ours could refer one of us to the other. That probably would be easiest to bring us together.

"Yes, your skills would be very useful. So far, no one else has arrived, yet I feel confident more will come. There is also an item that I think you will find useful. The sage heads back to his laboratory, then comes back with the green shard. "I have been studying this, and have determined that this is in fact, a shard of the emerald spire. "Thank Master Royst, we will use it wisely in our explorations." Karist slipped the shard into a pouch and set about quickly gathering together the few things he owned. He tucked them into a pack and left it by the door. "I will return and take these with me before we leave."

He turned to Enrico as he grabbed his quarter staff and slipped his sickle into his belt. "Now, if I am to be your tour guide about town, I suspect you can pay for those services."

He walked through the door and out into the street and turned to the half-elf, "Well are you coming, or do I need to hold your hand?"

He continued onward in the direction of the Juliver Arms, one of the inns in the Fort.

"I think that that is our biggest question, but how to use it in the Spire effectively is another question," Karist responded as the worked their way down one of the streets in the Fort. Up ahead, he saw the sign for the Juliver Arms, and motioned towards it. "There is one of the inns here, it may have some potential for recruits interested in joining us. Having accepted the task of claiming the Spire and finding the Hellknights, Corath couldn't help but think about how he might go about finding individuals capable of helping him. Perhaps the mercenary group that frequented the town? Yes, it was best to start there.

The young half-orc stepped into the tavern and began looking around, gauging individuals one at a time as if to judge their worth by sight alone.

As they approached, Karist thought he saw someone step into the tavern that he might be familiar with. The Fort's citizenry wasn't that large, and half-orcs, if it was the person he was thinking of, were even rarer.

"Enrico," Karist started as the were nearing the closed door to the Inn, "we may be in luck finding a few others to help us in our trip to the Spire." When they got to the door, Karist opened it and held it for the half-elf. "After you, good sir." He said with a touch of sarcasm and an exaggerated bow.

This one is curious indeed--a mix of deference and sarcasm. He should make for entertaining company, at the least, Enrico muses, stepping into the tavern.

He signals to the barkeep and plops into a chair, unceremoniously. Taking a sip, he clears his throat and speaks over the din.

Karist followed the half elf into the Juliver Arms and noticed that the half-orc had moved off to one area and had not seen him yet. As he sat down, and was about to order a honey mead, he heard Enrico's announcement.

Karist dropped his head and sighed, "Can I have the hard cider instead, as I think I am going to need its medicinal qualities for the days ahead?" He asked before expected honey mead was even poured. He looked at Enrico with a level of disbelief and shook his head disapprovingly.

Thoril- "We don't know much, but we do know the spire is an Azlanti ruin, and will randomly open portals to other planes, the elemental planes. Obviously, such creatures are extremely dangerous, and should be avoided when possible. The first level is the lair of goblins, and seems to have some effect on light. The bandits known as the splinters likely use it as a base, and we know it has at least ten levels. Above all, don't go alone. I believe there are some people here now. Good luck, master Thoril." How does he know your name? Magic, of course! :)

Say what you will, but it worked, didn't it? I'm not about to tip toe around to find people who may want to join us. From what I've heard, the Spire is dangerous. We need men of action, people who won't shirk from danger. Welcome aboard, Corath. I can't help you with any Hellknight business, but we can always use some magic on our side. Just make sure you keep up. Whaddya say, Karist? Are we good, or do we need more allies?

Corath, any chance you'd be willing to memorize Open/Close as one of your cantrips? I have ok perception and DD for level 1, and it'll get better when I can get MW armor and MW thieves' tools, but for now, just being able to open doors from a distance might save us a lot of healing down the road (triggering traps while we're back at a safe distance). What say you?

Just to be clear, circumstances do not currently allow me to be a fair hand with a longbow, as I can't afford one :P I will be using my fists, maybe shuriken occasionally, until I can afford one and/or hit level 3 :)

You head out of the fort. You don't need a letter of warrant since Corath is with you. The trip to the Emerald Spire is about two hours through dense woodland.

EW: 1d5 ⇒ 51d100 ⇒ 20
ES: 1d10 ⇒ 101d100 ⇒ 33
CS: 1d20 ⇒ 111d100 ⇒ 85

The journey to the spire is uninterrupted. Once you arrive you see the ruins in a center of a large clearing. The ruins are entirely composed of a beautiful green stone, with a magnificent emerald spire jutting at least 50 feet above the rest of the ruins. There is only one visible entrance, which is curiously unguarded.

As they were leaving the Inn, Karist returned to the Sage's house, grabbed his pack, his sling, and put on his padded armor.

Their walk took them through dense brush. They had seen nothing on their walk to the Spire. Then when they got closer they saw it. It was of a dark green emerald of massive proportions with the color capturing the light that only seemed to amplify the strangeness of the Spire. Ruins, plants, and such surrounded it, but it truly was a wonder. He looked up when Enrico noted that there were no guards.

When the dog and rider appeared, he slipped out his sling and loaded it with a stone he found on the ground.
