The north-man chuckles at the elves crude joke and leans closer as he speaks, glancing sidelong at the redhead Better to haf von in za lap I'd say.. but ei'ser vorks my friend, ei'ser vorks. the youth chuckles looking the woman up and down again, she did remind him of a girl he knew back home.. she's a bit more pale than the girl he remembers from home, but still quite the looker.

Seeing the dwarf looks no worse for the wear Tangar digs back into his food happy to be among, what seem to be, good people.

Eidolon Character sheet

Mr. Blnky studies the woman who brings in the food. Something seems wrong about her... different from the other servers of food and drink in the main room. Her spilling of a drink is at odds with the impressive grace of movement that she displays.

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Character sheet

Ozzy notices the red, flowing hair of the waitress. Her own hair is naturally white and as colorless as her skin. One of her few memories from before the shadow plane was of her mother dying both their hair black. Ozzy only has a vague sense that this was done to help fit into human society, but she has kept up the practice ever since, though using scavenged or otherwise inexpensive pigments has left her hair wild, with thick strands that are almost dreadlocks.

Ozzy wonders if the pigmentation is natural, and if she could one day have hair like that. If this job was as lucrative as it seemed, perhaps she could afford to properly clean and color her hair, and make it look like that.

Ozzy frowns and the men's lewd comments, not out of insult, but because she doesn't understand them. Even since her return from the shadow plane, she had never had time to think about boys (or girls for that matter), and her skinny, underdeveloped frame under ill-fitting armor had never really made her of note to them, either. Having had nobody to have the "birds and bees" talk with her, the interactions between men and women are more a point of confusion to her than anything else.

Sense Motive, Boudacia: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9

Sense Motive, Wayne: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

Boudacia strokes Wayne in gratitude, respecting his intuition. She then speaks to the waitress in thoughtful tones:-

Wayne tells me that you are interested in us and our conversation young lady. And Wayne believes you are a huntress not prey. A bat knows many things. Why not join us when you have finished serving the meal.

As Tamlara accepts the rag from Tygryk, she says: Of course, sir, the drink will be replaced at no charge to you. Shooting a sharp glance at the elf and barbarian whispering and casting looks at her from their corner, Tamlara glances somewhat nervously at the creature near the girl: I hope it doesn't want to bite me, my bow isn't anywhere close, and Kagnin won't let me carry my dagger in here! She then turns to regard Boudacia and Wayne. Shoulders drooping, head down, with her hair obscuring her face, Tamlara starts off rather timidly. . .I didn't- I mean, I wasn't- uggh! Throwing her head back, Tamlara stands tall and looks Boudacia directly in the eye. I'll have you know I wasn't trying to eavesdrop. I just overheard you talking. I have been intrigued by the Spire as long as I can remember. And you, your group here. . . well, you're just about the most diverse group I've ever seen. But I must ask, why would you invite me to join you? You don't even know me!

Boudacia maintains eye contact, not intimidated at all. She replies I didn't say you were eavesdropping, I said you were interested in our conversation. And you misunderstand. We are meeting here to get to know each other to see if we should join together to venture into the Spire. We don't know each other either. The offer stands.

Wayne might tell Boudacia with his sense motive check that Tamlara wasn't trying to be intimidating, quite the opposite, in fact! She is used to intimidating people unintentionally, so she avoids eye contact, slouches and mumbles. She also does this around many locals because of her past here. She just got fed up with the ruse.

None of you know each other? You all seem pretty comfortable around each other.
I have always wanted to go to the Spire.
Well, it wouldn't hurt to just sit in on the discussion. If it's not too busy out there, I'll see if Kagnin can spare me.

Watching Boudacia's transformation with rapt attention, Zero reaches a realization. Truly there is much of the world I have missed if it holds such amazing people. Perhaps leaving and exploring would be more beneficial than I previously thought. He stays silent, partially due to his lack of recent combat, and attempting to decipher Aldhranhald's comment.

Meekly raising his hand the bar maids words, the half elf says, "Fate weaves mysterious patterns. I don't see any reason to not at least listen." Taking another gulp of the Mead, Zero feels flushed. His posture has slackened some into a much more comfortable position, and he seems more animated and lively, which doesn't mean much with his normal social abilities.

Tygryk mumbles a little as the offer is made for the woman to join them, his eyes flickering over towards her.

"Well, she'll have to be more useful in the Spire than she is carrying drinks. What can you do, miss." The dwarf was curt if not polite, his eyes looking over her again for a moment. It could be confused with a more lascivious stare but Tygryk's mind was far from that. He studied her form to see how battle-ready it was, if he grace was simply practiced carrying drinks or if it was more natural.

@ Tamlara, Yes, Kagnin can spare you.

At Boudacia's transformation, Alex's eyes widen considerably, but then he watches her fly around the room with growing fascination and a smile. When others look alarmed and start to reach for their weapons, he holds out both hands palm down in a gesture to say 'stay calm, there is no danger here'.

Once she transforms back into 'human' form & everybody else has had their say, "Young Lady, you are fascinating indeed! I have heard tell of such things before, but never have I seen it in person! That is a truly marvelous ability and I can see how it would be very useful for explorations of dangerous places! I think you have certainly proven your worth to our venture!"

********

At the whole 'incident' of the mead being spilt, and then the slight confrontation leading to an invitation for the fiery haired youth to come and listen in, Alex slowly gains a 'knowing' smile.

"Well, we are blessed by Sarenrae with another beautiful lass! My name is Alex, healer of no small talent. Please, feel free to join us so we may learn more of each other and see what we may be able to put together for an adventuring party going into the Spire's ruins! We have just learned that the Lady Boudacia here, has the very useful capability of turning herself into a bat! This is the young lass Ozzy, and her adorable, yet frightening companion Mr. Blinky. The Elf over there is Sir Aldhranhald, next to him, impossible to miss! is the warrior of the north, Mr. Tangar. Then there is the Dwarf, Master Tygryk with both some fighting skills and some divine spells. And over here is Sir Zero, a half Elf, who by the looks of his blade should be capable of taking on quite a few foes! Now, I have made our introductions, would you mind kindly telling us your name please young miss? And something of what talents you would be able to assist us with, should we invite you to join us?"

Aldhranhald notices more than a few peculiarities about the red-haired young lady that spark his inquisitive nature. He looks her up and down, which, could be confused as some sort of lewd leer, especially because there is definitely an air of assessment to his look. However, at the moment Aldhranhald is much more interested in learning if the barmaid is, in fact, fully human.

Knowledge: Local with Monster Lore ability, and Inspiration ability: 10 + 8 + 3 + 1d6 ⇒ 10 + 8 + 3 + (4) = 25

Okay, I'm going to run with the idea that Aldhranhald knows that Tamlara is a dhampir, since the rules would bear that out. He will, however, not divulge that to the group, or even to Tamlara, for the moment. Aldhranhald, perhaps more than some (check his backstory to see why), knows that knowledge can be leverage, and leverage is a form of power.

Hmmmm, she's a dhampir. No wonder she seems so graceful, and yet a bit out of place. I wonder if she is even aware that she is the descendant of a vampire? Such knowledge could be traumatic for her, if she is unaware. I'll have to take her aside when the opportunity presents itself, and pick her brain to see. For now, it seems best to keep this knowledge to myself.

Turning back to the conversation at hand Aldhranhald stands up, attempting to show that he is actually an elf of gentile manners. Sir Aldhranhald?! He responds to Alex's formal attribution. Was I recently knighted unawares? No, simply Aldhranhald will do. He turns again to the beautiful, graceful, young lady and says, Might we have the pleasure of your name, young lady? He would wait a moment hoping for her response in kind, but then would continue. You are right to be wary and cautious of such a bold invitation of collegiality, but, the life of the adventuring sort requires bold moves on occasion. I think, as you look around the table, as you have said, at our diverse grouping, for where else would you see an aged elf trading bawdy jokes with a northman warrior, if not among the bold? No, I think you'll realize that we are indeed just such bold people. If, as you say, you are intrigued by the Emerald Spire, as are we all, I pray you, come, sit, and we shall take time to get to know each other. Then, as any here feel it worth their while, and comfortable with the arrangement, we can proceed to excitement and reward at some future date. With that he sits back down, but after just a brief pause he leans over and elbows Tangar and whispers in his ear. Besides, having more than one pretty girl around can only improve the view.

Well then, I suppose I will sit in. It's not every day that a group such as this looks to the Spire.

Taking a deep breath, Tamlara visibly steels herself.
How much do I tell them? Just the basics for now. They don't need my whole life story.

My name is Tamlara Loughlin. I am good with the bow, especially at distance, and in poorly lit areas. I am also fairly good at not being seen when I choose, and getting into those places people don't want me to be in.
She turns to Tygryk:
Tygryk, is it? I am not usually so clumsy as to spill the mead. I let myself get carried away listening to your conversation. Please believe that is not how I usually comport myself.

As she finishes, she looks around at all of you. You might get the feeling she's leaving something out, then she says:

If you should decide to include me in your group, you do need to be aware of one thing: Some of the inhabitants of Fort Inevitable do not look kindly upon me and may transfer their dislike to you if ally yourselves with me. It is not for anything I've done, merely their suspicious natures getting the better of them. You may want to consider this before you make your final decision. Unless you have other questions, I'll go get Tygryk more mead and check with Kagnin about taking the rest of the afternoon off.

The north-man chuckles at the elf's comment. Indeed...

When the woman, Tamlara, mentions she is good at getting into places Tangar's ears pick up. He knows from sitting at his fathers table, that someone skilled in this area is a good asset and he mentions it to her. Ven mine fader talked of his days of adventuring, he mentioned his friend, Gypsie, whom vas also good at getting into places he shouldn't. He said he vas an invaluable asset to z'eir group. If you can bring dis skill to our endeavour zen you should be a velcome asset to us..

He then drains half his mug and grabs something else off his plate and continues eating.

Oh yeah, there's food now...

While all of this is going on, Ozzy is busily working her way through the meal set before her. She eats as if she hasn't had a proper meal in weeks, and her table manners leave plenty to be desired. Her fork is stuck permanently in her piece of meat, which she alternately takes bites from while using her other hand to shovel potatoes into her mouth.

I appreciate you being upfront about that Tamlara. I can only speak for myself, but I doubt I share others prejudices, and I will live with any of it that rubs off on me. People sometimes fear Skinwalkers, so I know how it is. I don't normally have trouble passing as human, so I am fortunate. But nonetheless you had best tell us what it is people hold against you, if not now before we go into some place as dangerous as the Spire.

Tygryk looks over at the girl as she eats with her hands, shaking his head as he stands up and marches over towards her. He would clear his throat for a moment, looking up at the girl and his smile would be warm if stern.

"Dear....Ozzy was it? Do you not know how to use the utensils here?" He says, gesturing to the cutlery that was there. There wasn't any chiding in his voice, not yet anyways, just a curious question. His head twisted towards Tamlara and there was a carefree shrug before he spoke again.

"I do not care about your heritage. In the mountains, there are some that believe that something strange is wrong and dangerous. I believe that those who have unique skills provide unique insights. What is the beauty of a golden cup without the shining gems within it?"

"Aldhranhald it is then. I meant no offense. I have learned in my years that it is best to start off respectfully & then back down if needed."

Watching Ozzy's behavior, Alex just chuckles slightly, in full understanding of the feelings, having gone through similar moments in his past.

Then as Tamlara talks about some people not liking her and so forth, Alex gets a more serious & sad look upon his face. "Young lass, with my unusually bright golden eyes & hair," - which makes everybody look closer to realize his eyes are extremely unusual, they don't just have a gold color to them, they actually appear as if they were made of gold! And the same with his hair! - "I have had my share of moments of being kicked out, unwanted, even persecuted. I have learned through all this that the outward appearance is not what matters, but that which is in the heart. And your talent to get in & out of places, plus being good with a bow, does seem like that could be useful in such a place as the Spire."
"Now to follow Lady Boudacia's example, while I have no such dramatic display to make, I shall reveal the truth that I am not fully human. Somewhere in my ancestry, in manners which I know not, an angel got involved with our family, and some of it's traits have revealed themselves in me. Besides my appearance, I seem to be better at healing than the average healer, and I seem to swim better than the average person as well, moving slightly faster in the water than I do on my own two feet. There are stories of previous members of my family even growing wings and being able to fly. So far I do not have that talent. I do believe that at least the healing aspect should make me useful to this group."
"While I encourage such honesty from the rest of you, I understand some people are not comfortable with disclosing everything about themselves and if you wish to reveal nothing other that what talents would make you useful to this group I will accept that."

When Tygryk moves toward Ozzy, Mr. Blinky stands and interposes himself between the girl and the dwarf.

Ozzy drops her fork on her plate and moves her hand to Mr. Blinky's back. Her other hand, with bits of potato still clinging to it, rests on the handle of the knife next to her plate. She does not yet pick it up, but from behind it is clear that she is preparing to defend herself if necessary. Yes! The girl says defensively, turning to meet the dwarf's gaze. Clearly, the girl is not accustomed to being treated with kindness, and not knowing what to make of Tygryk's approach, she prepares for the worst.

Tangar chuckles a little as the dwarf questions the girl, Ozzy, on her utensil skills, he's amused by her reaction as well. This is done as he rips off another chunk of chicken or whatever this bird had been in life, with his hands and shoves it in his face. He ponders briefly grabbing a fork, but decides his hands are always the better tool for eating. Occasionally he does reach out and use a rag to wipe his hands on, usually just before he grabs his mug of mead.
Noting her posture he quips Master D'arf, you may haf need to defend yerself, tread lightly here.. He chuckles again and shakes his head, the girl seems new to polite company.

He looks about again taking in the people there, and watching the wait staff as they come in and leave. He wonders what lies ahead, will they be successful, will they fail... will they survive. Then he notes his mug is once again empty, and he reaches for a pitcher to refill it, it wasn't bad mead, but it wasn't like what he got back home... that was just something he was gonna have to deal with..

As Alex finishes his comments, he ca'tn help but wonder about the strange man, it isn't often one is in the presence of those sired by higher beings, or their offspring. Tangar shakes his head agian as their group becomes more.. interesting.. as the day goes by.

Relax Ozzy, Mr Blinky, you are among friends. I believe Tygryk's question was meant literally not metaphorically, he really wanted to know if you knew how to use table utensils. Knifes and forks are not used everywhere.

Not used in the Linnorm Kingdoms by the looks of things. Boudacia, you are speaking to a child who's first language may not be common. Literally not metaphorically really?

You know... Aldhranhald says as he daintily cuts his roast fowl with knife and fork, and brings a small morsel to his lips. I read a book once that said table manners, or etiquette, as it is often called, are one of the first constructive lessons parents teach their children about fitting in to their society. It is one of the first times children learn that there is a world outside of their family that has expectations for behavior. Often it leads to wider lessons about morality. Think on it. Learning how to use a knife and fork in polite society is often the precursor to learning that killing people is a crime. When Aldhranhald finishes his remembrance, he looks directly at Ozzy with her fistful of potatoes, and tight grip on the knife and says, It is also one of the first mannerisms that people observe when trying to judge a person's character. He then takes a long draught of his Stout, and follows it with a rather long, rather loud belch. Bbbbrrrrrrrruuuuuuupppppppp. After belching quite conspicuously, he dabs a corner of his napkin quite lightly into the corners of his mouth and says, I bet whoever wrote that book never had to survive on salt pork, hard cheese, and waybread for weeks at a time. He smiles then, and winks at Ozzy.

Tygryk stares the creature down, his head canting for a moment before he smiles at the beast and nods.

"Quite the defender, you are. I mean your ward no harm, I wouldn't come with empty hands if it was otherwise." The words weren't really a threat, more like a lesson being offered. He would look to Boudacia and give an appreciative nod, she was right on the money. The girl was strange, her companion was stranger, and what kind of son of Torag would he be if he did not try to help.

There is a stern gaze given to Aldhranhald and Tangar and they would both see that instinctive glare that could be associated with a father's disappointment. He looked back to the girl and his demeanor softened, that smile spreading across his face.

"You should use them. Know why?" He would grab a chair from nearby, sitting up on it for a moment before looking back towards her. "Greasy hands and fingers mean slippery tools. Let it be a blade, a hammer, a saw, or a sewing needle, it makes it possible that you won't work as well as you should. Someone might rely on your work and if it isn't as good, their work might be ruined too. Clumsiness begets ruin, take your time and ensure it is done right."

He takes his own plate after gesturing it over, cutting into the meat with the fork and knife before looking back at her. Taking a bite, he lets out a purr of enjoyment before nodding again.

"When we take our time, we can enjoy what we have more and understand it more. The savory flavor of salt and pepper, with just the slightest hint of garlic to not overpower the taste of the beef. A well-cooked piece of meat. When we meet the Lady of Graves, we do not want to tell her that we rushed through everything, right?" He would ask before popping another piece of meat into his mouth and then cutting a piece for Blinky. She said that the beast didn't need to eat but that didn't mean it didn't want to.

Feeling incredible jovial and warm, Zero chuckles at Aldhranhald's rather loud belch. Leaning against the corner of his chair, the half elf counters the rather eloquent elf. "While it is not a shame to be unaware, it is a shame to deny an opportunity to at least learn. Even of what one learns, not all of it perfectly fits into the mold of the learner. Besides, if everyone was the same we would miss out on some of the greatest aspects of the world's beauty."

Tilting his head in surprise at his own words, the half elf clumsily slides his mead away. "I may have drank more than I should have."

Nodding at the mention of the Seven Foxes, Zero adds, "I would assume so; the hell knights are the only seriously organization around here besides occasional brigand groups. Perhaps when we go to get our writs we could ask for information?"

Aldhranhald's loud burp breaks the tension, and the girl laughs, a little nervously, before turning her attention back to her piece of meat. "That may be so Tangar but I think you miss the lesson. It is of no worries though." There were the rounds of burping all around and a grin spread across the dwarf's face. He was a warrior of Torag, certainly, but he was still a member of the faith. A chance to teach others was a chance the dwarf could not miss.

With an approving nod and smile towards Ozzy, Tygryk would resume eating his food and drinking from his mead. With Zero's words, he'd raise his glass towards the man and nod. "Well said, Zero, well said. We are each molded in our own way, blessings to Torag and his wisdom."

"They seem a good test for us to work try fighting against. I heard some consider them local heroes against the hellknights but...the hellknights at least offer some semblance of order out here. I think we should perhaps persue them, see how we all work together."

Tamlara looks at all of you and says:
Difficult as it is to believe, Fort Inevitable is home to a small resistance movement known as the Seven Foxes. This secret society formed when the Lady Commander brutally reacted to Lord Varden’s assassination. A lot of folk were unhappy with how heavy-handed and unfair she was. The Foxes watch for impending Hellknight raids or crackdowns, and pass warnings to those likely to be affected. Occasionally, they help wanted criminals slip out of town, or hide fugitives. While they can’t free the slaves, the Seven Foxes sometimes help slaves in special danger to escape or punish particularly abusive slave owners and slave traders.
There aren’t actually seven of them; there are about a dozen members, and three times as many sympathizers.

She watches you all carefully, waiting to see your reactions to this news.

Tygryk's body freezes when there is a mention of slavery, his eyes flickering up from his meal and towards Tamlara. There is a dark and stormy look in the dwarf's eyes as he sets his tools down and the scowl across his face is both anger and distaste.

"Torag did not create the world for others to be enslaved." He said with a low growl that was like rocks grinding against one another. "I have no further interest in trying to harm these Foxes, let them act as they wish."

Alex's words ring true and Tygryk looks over at him, nodding. "As a lone man? You likely accomplish little. No city is built in a day though, it requires many to push back against the wicked." His attention turns back towards Tamlara once more, his voice low as he spoke. "Perhaps there is a more righteous target for us to strike. As we are now, struggling against the Hellknights would be a foolish endeavor, if we pursue such a thing."

This is probably going to make most of you believe me insane, but, please hear me out. First, it is paramount that you know I was a slave. I was born a slave in Caliphas, and for many years my life was actually very pleasant. After my first master died, and his son took over control of my family, that drastically changed. Suffice it to say, that at that point being a slave was no longer enjoyable. Yet, it was just that adversity that lead me to the knowledge and talents that I have now. I do not condone slavery, to own another person's life is unconscionable, by my way of thinking. However, and this is where I will need you to remember that I was a slave, we cannot end slavery. Aldhranhald takes a bite of his food, and washes it down with another drink. It is a simple truth. We, sitting here, even allied with a group like the Seven Foxes, whomever they are, cannot end slavery. He waits a moment again, looking each man or woman in the eyes, making sure that they grasp this simple truth. Slavery has existed for centuries, and will continue to exist for centuries after I am gone. It was a difficult truth for me to swallow, but swallow it I did. With that he swallows another morsel of food, as if to add effect to his words. Sure, if we join the Foxes, we might free one slave, or two, perhaps a dozen, but those who think slavery is their right, will simply buy more slaves. Some people will willingly sell themselves into slavery to avoid starving or freezing to death. Aldhranhald lets that truth sit in the air for a moment as well. If you start down a road, thinking the end of the road is an end to slavery, you will find yourself wandering that road until death, and as you die, you will realize that just across the street is a woman enslaved... The black-haired elf takes a few moments and enjoys his food, drink, and the good company. Then finishes his diatribe with these words. I decided long ago, after I realized this hard truth, that the best thing I could do in regards to slavery, is to never be a slaver myself. All else is futile at best, and any attempts at heroism in that regard, would only be done to make myself feel good temporarily. If you help one slave, you will feel good, for a time, until you realize that you have only pulled one pine needle from an ancient pine that grows three new needles for each one you have removed. After that Aldhranhald sits in silence, finishing of his food, and refilling his Dwarven Stout from the stoneware pitcher in the middle of the table.

But... the girl tries to argue, but seems at a loss for words.

"That is quite the statement, though there is a difference between slavery being a crime and slavery being a law. There is a difference between it being seen as the atrocity it is and making headway against it or seeing it as a necessary evil. Andoran survives without slavery. Varisia, for the most part, survives without slavery. Only the cruelly-hearted see slavery as a boon for all, cruel creatures like the Duergar and the devils within the Nine Hells."

The dwarf scoffs for a moment, leaning in and nodding at the elf as he drank from his pitcher. His voice remained low and calm, though his distaste was easily read upon his face.

"A life freed is a book that is able to write its own story now, now longer forced to write in the hand its master wishes. What you suggest is apathy and never once has apathy helped the world. Pulling pine needles from a wicked tree is a start, at least until you get the chance to cut it at its base and drag its rotten roots from the good soil and plant a new tree of hope. Every diamond starts as coal, after all."

It seems then that Tygryk grows tired of hearing himself talk, sitting back from the table before he shook his head. "It should be fought until the vile concept returns to its proper place; the tools of the wicked rather than the law of the land." Lifting his mug, he takes a deep drink and pushes away his plate, his appetite killed with such talk.
