Symon |
Am I correct in assuming that the passageway behind the mud-thing is not connected to that east-west tunnel? If it was, then Symon would travel around and get behind the creature.
Drusellia Malacore |
"Here we go again," Dru grumbles and unleashes a now-familiar blast of searing energy.
Dru vs. Mudlord (ranged touch): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage (scorching ray): 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 5) = 20 (fire)
GM Zed |
The flames from Drusellia’s outstretched arms wreath the submerged mud creature in blue fire, clouds of steam momentarily filling the tunnel and obscuring vision… yet, when the steam recondenses in the cold air, it is clear that Dezco’s assailant has not been affected…
Waiting on an action from Symon
GM Zed |
With everyone massed in front of him, Symon's missed shot is almost inevitable...
Mudlord, Maintain Grapple vs Dezco: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28, Grapple is Maintained / Mudlord moves Dezco and itself at half speed
...clutching the dwarf tight and to wveryone's horror, Dezco's enemy pulls him underwater and farther into the corridor... moving quickly away from the precious air...
Dezco is now fully submerged / fighting underwater
Everyone may take their turn now
Dezco |
I think I take a -2 to attacks for being grappled and another -2 for being underwater (and half damage) but I'm not for sure so I'm just using my normal modifiers in the actual roll.
Attack: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 2 = 19
Damage: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Not liking this situation in the slightest Dezco frantically hacks at the muddy brute.
Drusellia Malacore |
"I fear that it is resistant to my magics!" Dru shouts. "I cannot be of much aid in that respect." She draws her rapier, looking to the party leader for advice.
Luther Lightblade |
"We gotta go after and save Dezco. I can give you water breathing instead of airbreathing."
Luther casts and touches the others as they allow him, and gives them the ability to breathe water and not air.
Std=casts Aboleth's Lung -- move action to follow and move 20' in the water
With the ability to travel freely, Luther catches up to Dezco and touches him, conferring this ability to breathe water on him too.
Conner accepts and moves to purse.
I assumed a conner double move would only get him 6 squares, and a Luther single move 4 squares -- move them both on map.
GM Zed |
Luther - fifteen feet of the movement to catch up with Dezco is fully underwater (basically anything beyond the space that Dezco vacated is underwater) and requires a swim check (rather than simply being difficult terrain)... I think even with a successful check you may not be able to catch up with Dezco?
Luther Lightblade |
With full plate, my swim is -5 total. My only form of movement is walking on the bottom. So I will move as quickly as I can, but I really wouldn't try to swim. The section below implies I move at half, and I do not know if travel domain helps. Half speed puts him behind Conner unable to reach Dezco. Conner was moved at half assuming he walked on the bottom.
Luther tries to give Dezco the means to breathe underwater, unsure if he can reach him time.
GM Zed |
Symon lets fly with another speculative bolt before following everyone else into the cloudy water… Conner and Luther almost catch up with Dezco – who slashing and stabbing at his captor, finds he is only cutting at the water – before, with a second surge backwards, the Mud Creature swims back into a large room.
The room, which is fed by the waterfall from the room you previously explored, is filled with water to a depth of around nine feet – a small air space of around a foot lies between the surface of the water and the ceiling. Two doors, one to the east and one to the west, lead from the room and, in the southern wall of the room, a shimmering portal…sparkling and bright, even within the murky water.
Mudlord, Maintain Grapple vs Dezco: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24, Grapple is Maintained / Mudlord moves Dezco and itself at half speed
Everyone may take their turn now
Drusellia Malacore |
Drusellia tries to make headway in the water, but can't even manage to keep herself afloat.
Swim (untrained): 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
GM Zed |
Mudlord takes a -2 to AC (-4 penalty to DEX) whilst Grappling / Grappled
Dezco, still struggling within the grip of the Mud Creature, manages to slice into one of the limbs that is grasping him tight…
Half Damage due to Slashing Weapon Damage in Water, further reduced to 4 due to Mudlords’ DR/5
Luther Lightblade |
Luther stomps after Dezco (4 squares south). Conner follows (4 squares down 2 squares left).
Walking on the bottom, the two humans are slowed somewhat, but make no attempt to swim as they breathe the water.
Symon |
Struggling at first, Symon finally calms down and allows the spell to help him breath the water. He swim/runs after the others, reloading his crossbow as he moves forward as best he can.
Symon also attempts to simply 'walk' on the bottom..not too sure what his movement would be, but he does attempt to keep up with the others
GM Zed |
As Symon, Drusellia and Luther make their way towards the room where Dezco has been dragged to, Conner is already there... Seeing another enemy approach, the mud creature lets its grip loose from around Dezco's waist and, moving towards Conner, starts to attack.
Mudlord, 5ft step then Full Attack
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 13 - 2 = 23, hitting for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 2) + 3 = 6 (halved to 3, Bludgeoning Underwater) and Grab
Mudlord, Grapple vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 12 - 2 = 11, Grapple Failed
Mudlord, Slam vs Dezco (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 13 - 2 = 23, hitting for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 6) + 3 = 11 (halved to 5, Bludgeoning Underwater) and Grab
Mudlord, Grapple vs Dezco (Underwater): 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 12 - 2 = 12, Grapple Failed
Everyone may take their turn now
Luther Lightblade |
Luther walks on the bottom and casts some magic.
2 squares south, std=magic weapon on Dezco sword
Luther grasps the hilt of Dezco's sword enchanting it.
Conner infuses his sword with his own magic power.
Conner attacks. Arcane pool 4/5 +1 longsword now -2 for slashing in water
sword attack/weapon damage: 1d20 + 6 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 6 - 2 = 201d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Luther gestures for Symon to help out.
Drusellia Malacore |
Drusellia strikes with her rapier, feeling outclassed. It is clear that she is frustrated by an enemy who is resistant to her magics.
Dru vs. Mudman: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Damage (rapier): 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
GM Zed |
All – there is a reasonable amount of underwater combat through the rest of this level so it is worth pointing out that Swimming and ‘Walking along the Bottom’ are the only two viable ways of moving – ‘walking along the bottom’ has a certain weight restriction (minimum carried weight of 16 pounds) to allow it to happen – I am sure Luther meets this requirement and I imagine Conner does as well – however Drusellia certainly doesn’t (and must make swim checks to move) and I wonder whether Symon or Dezco do?]
Drusellia – you are not yet in the room – I will take the die roll as a failed Swim Check
Conner’s sword scythes through the water, slicing into the Mud Creature and creating a small trail of suspended filth as the blade arcs around.
Symon's bolt 'flies' slightly wide before, running out of momentum, it comes to a floating halt...
The mud creature, enraged by Conner's attack, slams at the magus and the dwarf once more... but, despite fighting in its own natural habitat, misses badly...
Mudlord, Full Round Action
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 13 - 2 = 13, missing
Mudlord, Slam vs Dezco (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 13 - 2 = 14, missing
Everyone may take their turn now
Luther Lightblade |
I think Dez's chain shirt is 25 pounds alone
Luther touches Dezco, giving him the strength of a bull (+4 STR), this combat was not going to go quickly.
Conner can't try his spell combat without risk, he is relegated to attacking with his now enchanted sword.
attack/damage: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 7 - 2 = 191d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Luther points to Symon's rapier and the creature.
Drusellia Malacore |
Drusellia Swim Check: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4
Dru continues fighting to keep her head above water.
Symon |
Symon swim/walks towards the mud-beast, drawing his rapier and striking at the monster's back.
Attack-melee: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 Flanking bonus
Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + 1 + (5, 3) = 14 Sneak damage
GM Zed |
Sadly, the Mudlord is immune to Flanking, to Sneak Damage and, just for extra awfulness, Critical Hits
Symon / Dezco - Furthermore, unless you have a listed Swim Speed, you really can’t five foot step underwater (Dezco – I have assumed you stay where you are / Symon – I think you probably end up North East of the Mudlord unless you are okay with drawing an Attack of Opportunity?
Symon’s rapier stabs into the Mud Creature…whilst the thrust is effective, it has considerably less impact than he would have hoped for.
Focussing completely upon Conner, the Mud Creature – slopping and rolling as a dark mass within the water – smashes into the Magus.
Mudlord, Full Round Action
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 13 - 2 = 27, hitting for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2) + 3 = 9 (Halved to 4, Bludgeoning Underwater) and Grab
Mudlord, Grapple vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (4) + 12 - 2 = 14, Conner is not Grappled
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 13 - 2 = 14, missing

Drusellia Malacore |
Swim: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6
And once again, Dru loses ground to the water.
Luther Lightblade |
Luther grants protection to his allies.
+2AC for 4 rounds.
He moves south 10' slowly curling to flank with Conner.
Conner attacks with his sword.
lsword: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 7 - 2 = 121d8 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
GM Zed |
GMPC for Symon
Weighted down within the turbulent water, Symon gains enough purchase to stab at the mud creature…this time his rapier slices only through water and his opponent is unharmed.
Symon, Rapier vs Mudlord: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17, missing
Conner and Dezco, also struggling within the water, find it impossible to connect with the living mud that rolls and boils before them...
Unaffected by any of the attacks upon it, the creature slams into Conner twice – and, with an oversized limb of pulsating dirt and soil, clutches the magus tight…
Mudlord, Full Round Action
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 13 - 2 = 25, hitting for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 4) + 3 = 9 (Halved to 4, Bludgeoning Underwater)
Mudlord, Slam vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 13 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 13 - 2 = 21, hitting for 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (1, 4) + 3 = 8 (Halved to 4, Bludgeoning Underwater) and Grab
Mudlord, Grapple vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (10) + 12 - 2 = 20, Conner is Grappled
Everyone may take their turn now
Symon |
Ok, I do not know why, but most of my posts to this game are disappearing...and it seems to only be this game. This is the 5 such in the last 2 weeks, so I apologize if it seems I am not posting, but I do not know why they are disappearing...
Symon |
Symon again attempts to stab the mud creature with his rapier after taking a short step to readjust his position to keep the creature between him and his colleagues. (5' step)
Attack-melee: 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 = 30
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Figures I would get a crit on a creature immune to them...again!
Luther Lightblade |
Luther tries to heal all but the mud man.
channel +ve: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
He seems heal most of Conner's recent wounds.
5/6 channels left
Conner continues to hit with his sword.
att/ damage: 1d20 + 7 - 4 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 7 - 4 + 2 = 201d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Drusellia Malacore |
Swim: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9
Dru continues her fight to keep her head above water.
GM Zed |
Dezco, Symon and even Conner, grappled as he is, manage to land blows upon the mud creature. The slashes and stabs break through the semi-solid surface of the creature and, even though the wounds appear to close immediately, the creature seems somehow diminished…
With the water becoming increasingly cloudy as the mud creature discorporates, your foe changes its’ tactics…
…it clutches Conner tight in it’s muddy embrace and, ignoring the threat posed by Symon and Dezco, moves towards the shimmering portal in the southern wall - shoving past Luther, it starts to merge into the wall…
Mudlord, Maintain Grapple vs Conner (Underwater): 1d20 + 12 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 12 + 5 - 2 = 23, Conner is Grappled
Mudlord, Combat Manoeuvre to Move Conner / Mudlord through Portal – Diagonal move into Portal
Mudlord will provoke Attacks of Opportunity from Dezco, Luther and Symon
Note slightly questionable movement (specifically moving in a diagonal into the portal) – Am exercising a little bit of GM fiat to bring this combat to a close (feeling sorry for Drusellia floating in the corridor to the north) and / or also removing Conner from the game
Luther, Symon and Dezco – Please roll for your Attacks of Opportunity now
