The Dying City: DM Norv's "Curse of the Crimson Throne"

Game Master The Norv

Yeah, I'm gonna let you cast heroism, Callie. Since you're not moving I don't think I'd even really require the check to begin with.

ROUND FOUR!

The priestess laughs darkly as she watches Korriban scamper across the ground. "Already you abase yourselves before me...though some of you could use a lesson in politeness. I think I'll start with you, sorceress." She gestures and speaks a dark word, and Lantressa suddenly hears a cacophonous roar of gibbering voices--before hearing nothing further. The priestess cackles as she stalks through the air around the statue.

Lantressa is deafened! The party is up. Korriban and Callie each get a free Will save at the start of their turns to act normally (DC 19); otherwise you have to remain prone.

Also, just a thing I just double-checked...be aware that while her scythe is super cool, scythes do not have reach. Sorry. :S

Callie decides that clinging to the statue is a much better idea than trying to maneuver and stand up again.

She continues to orate, however. "Pathetic it is indeed, when a villain is so desperate it resorts to harmless parlor tricks and calls them power, and talks because it cannot actually harm its foes. Such mewling from the evil priestess sounds like a dying mouse's last shriek..."

At this last word, she waves her sword and sends a magic scream, heard only by the priestess, toward her, the sound bursting within her ears.

ROUND FIVE!

Callie sheathes her sword as she casts a spell on the floating priestess, who winces, but looks more annoyed than injured. Teodor casts a spell on Korriban to assist him, but Korriban and Callie still find themselves unable to shake off their compulsion--as Lantressa dismisses the grease on the floor, Korriban hurls a knife upward at the priestess, but it flies past her. She chortles.

"You think I need my scythe to end your lives? You're about to find out how mistaken you are. Step away from it, fool--Urgathoa has ways to make you comply!" So saying, she raises her holy symbol again, and a scythe forms out of the air, a burning weapon made of black fire, and flies down at Teodor. The priest manages to dodge the whirling weapon, and she scowls.

"Insolence. I will deal with you myself, then..." Still in the air, she stalks toward the spot where Teodor stands over her weapon.

And the party's up once more! C'mon, Korriban and Callie--I know you can make that save! :D

Lantressa tried to figure out what she could do that would help now. Her magic was out since she couldn't hear, and she didn't have the levels of power left to cast anything silenced as that took more effort than a normal casting. She had little other than her claws to use as weapons right now and she was loathe to get that close. The best she could do was retrieve her stowed potions and tend to the injured as best she could. To be honest it pissed her off enough that she wanted to wade in, claws swinging, and tear that b+&@$ apart, fortunately her more rational side prevailed, for now. After retrieving her potion the tiefling realized what she could do that would be mean and vindictive, if it worked, and drew on what magic she had left, weaving it into an orb of acid, without words, and sent it flying at the statue's face.

ROUND SIX!

Callie and Korriban, both still compelled to crawl, hurl daggers at the priestess--Korriban's glides past her, damaging her cloak, but both of Callie's blades open thin wounds on the dark woman's upper arms! Lantressa manages to cast a spell without speaking, grazing your target with a bolt of acid, but the priestess just flinches.

"Give me my scythe back, little man. If you do not--" She raises her hand and speaks a word, and her hand is suddenly engulfed in black fire. "--Urgathoa will smite you for me." As Teodor picks up the scythe, she descends toward the ground...and Teodor manages to slice into her with the blade! She hisses in pain, and there's a flash of black fire from the scythe--and Teodor yelps in pain! He and the priestess face each other, her with her malignant dark fire in hand, he with the scythe...

See Discussion for more on the scythe. The party's up! ETA: derp, forgot to say that's Teo takes 2 damage. It's a vicious scythe.

Callie's daggers fly through the air, but clatter harmlessly on the ground, skidding across the floor. Teodor's wild swing with the scythe bounces off the priestess's armor, and she cackles--a cackle which turns into a cry of pain as Korriban, stabbing upward from the floor with his rapier, just manages to pierce her side!

"Insolence!" she snarls. "I'll deal with you in a moment." Pointing her hand toward Korriban, she sends the scythe she summoned of black fire hurtling down into Korriban's back, dealing a heavy blow. "But first...my scythe." Hand still limned in black fire, she reaches out and seizes Teodor's throat. The black fire in her hand flares, and Teodor lets out a strangled cry!

...But he does not fall. Teodor, you should definitely say something cool here.

The priestess backs away (5' step), eyes wide and furious. "You defy Urgathoa? Who are you all?! Fools, I can still kill you..."

Korriban takes 10 points of damage; Teodor, despite failing his save, takes only 49 points of damage and, by my math, is at 5 hit points...but the party is up!!

Teodor whips the scythe around and catches the priestess in the throat. Her eyes widen in shock, and, with a choking noise, she raises one hand to her neck. Blood spills out, pouring over her hand, and she holds up her fingers to look at the red liquid wonderingly. Her eyes go back to Teodor, and her mouth tries to form into a snarl...but then she collapses, red pooling beneath her black-shrouded form, and lies still on the floor.

As Teodor, too, collapses in an unconscious heap, Korriban and Callie feel the priestess's magical compulsion on them evaporate.

And thus passes the leader of this cult! Since Teo is at negative hit points and for other reasons, I'm going to keep us in rounds for the moment...everyone else go ahead and post an action for this round and we'll see where that leaves us.

Cure: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

When he comes to, she grins. "That was legendary. Now, when you're ready to get up, shall we burn a corpse? I really don't want to think what exposure she's had to necromantic energies."

Once we're outside round-based movement
When ready, she and whomever else drags the corpse out of the shrine, as she figures it's probably best to dispose of the remains well the heck away from the shrine of Urgathoa.

Like a good former pickpocket should, she also thoroughly relieves the priestess's body of any valuables.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Let's stay in rounds for...reasons. Say 2 more rounds. You can certainly start searching her or carrying her away if you wish! You can all post the actions for the remaining rounds at once (2 each for Teo and Callie, 3 each for Korriban and Lantressa).

Teodor finishes decapitating her with his sickle. coup: 2d10 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 + 2 = 15

Juuuuuust in case.

Lantressa entered the room once the b&%+$ had died and approached the downed Teodor. She was delighted at his survival when Callie cast a spell on him but was aggravated that she still couldn't hear. She handed him a potion and gestured for him to drink it. She looked nervously at the corpse and then at the statue, something didn't feel right about this it was almost too easy, and reached into her pack for another potion to hand to Teo if he wanted it once he was finished with the corpse. Deciding that it was just her imagination Lantressa turned and headed for the hallway, hoping to reach the top floor and get some help with her deafness.

Both potions are of cure light wounds.

cure light wounds 2: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Save your potions, Teodor has channels left. Thanks, though!

Then here are my next two actions

Callie will drag the priestess out of the shrine as far as she can go.

Callie will drop some of her playing cards (to use as kindling) on the body and set them alight with spark. (And remind herself to buy a new deck).

The floors are stone so the fire shouldn't really spread.

As a free action, she'll call out for Riceak. He and Ruan should still be waiting at the entrance. If he arrives she'll ask him to go see if the Pharasman priests are still tending to the area and if some will come to help desecrate (consecrate?) Urgathoa's shrine.

Korriban's eyes widen as he sees Teodor, with righteous conviction, take down the priestess before falling himself. He's still in shock as Callie and Lantressa go to aid him. When everything's done, Korriban finally gets up and says, "Teodor... That was... I... don't know what to say. Are you okay? Do you need any potions?"

If Teodor accepts:

Korriban will dig out both of his potions and gives them to Teodor.

That will be two rounds.

If Teodor declines:

Korriban nods. "Well, okay. If you're sure." He will then proceed to aid Callie with the body. However, before she sets it on fire, he takes everything of value off of the body.

Regardless of whether Teodor takes the potions, I would like to try and take as many of her possessions as possible before it's set on fire. Also, I do have an oil bomb. Should I use that on the body?

Male

Lantressa, any changed actions since Teodor's not interested in your potions? I'll move us forard in the morning.

I'll just leave earlier to head for the surface. Right now, with the fighting over and Teo alive Tressa is more concerned with getting her hearing restored than waiting around down here. I think you can safely consider her out of combat now since she won't hear if anything is happening to know to come back.

M Human (Ustalavian) Cleric of Groetus 3/Slum Shaman 1/Evangelist of Groetus 5

Does Remove Disease work on deafness?

M Human (Ustalavian) Cleric of Groetus 3/Slum Shaman 1/Evangelist of Groetus 5

Most likely not, I'm guessing it was the blindness/deafness spell wich means remove blindness/deafness is need to counter it.

M Human (Ustalavian) Cleric of Groetus 3/Slum Shaman 1/Evangelist of Groetus 5

Damn, sorry. I couldn't remember which spell was higher level. Good news is we have a lot of priests who see us as heroes now.

Korriban smiles at Teodor's slip up. "Glad to see you're okay, too, buddy."

Also, I made a small mistake. It's not an oil bomb. It's a tar bomb.

Male

Once Teodor beheads the priestess and begins to heal himself, Lantressa starts to head toward the surface and Callie and Korriban drag the priestess's corpse toward the hallway. Korriban strips her of valuables and sticks his tar bomb onto her; Callie, after scattering her cards onto her, sets the corpse ablaze with a cantrip.

But even as she does...the priestess's hand twitches.

The sudden, chilling sound of a deep gong rings down the hallway, creating enough reverberations that it shakes loose dust from the ceiling. Looking back toward the shrine, you see the statue's eyes glowing with a bilious green flame, and as you watch, the seven noxious fluids in the fonts around the shrine roil as though suddenly brought to a boil. Then, all at once, they surge forth, streaming into the air!

The priestess's corpse, still aflame, flies into the air, and as the reverberations from the gong-like noise continue, the jets of filth stream around, over, and even into the body, swelling and distorting it. From the stump of its neck, a horrible new head of congealed humors grows, and one of the body's arms bloats into a massive, scythe-like claw. The head gains a face, and it resembles the woman you killed; when the creature speaks, it uses her voice, but there are terrifying, unearthly echoes beneath.

"Yes. YES! The Pallid Princess has seen my labors, and granted me new birth--not as a priestess but as a SAINT in Her Unholy Church! Now I shall strike down first you, then all who would oppose this plague in Korvosa and the world! Come, mortals. I shall give the gift of death!"

COMBAT! (technically a continuation) ROUND TEN!

Korriban reacts quickly, the only one of the party to get the drop on this new, unholy threat!

Not quite sure how far the lift was from here but I would have had to full rounds of going to it, with hasted speed that puts me 240 feet away and out of line of sight. I imagine that I won't see any of what's happening, or hear it (of course) but the reverberations I can feel through the floor should make this interesting. i figure I am 1 square from the doors to room G4 on the overall map down here.

Korriban, don't forget that when you act first the foe is flat-footed! Which means you get...

Sneak attack!: 4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 3) = 18

I do believe you're done with haste, though. Didn't we cover that in Discussion?

ROUND ONE (cont'd)

Korriban leaps forward and stabs the (still burning) undead horror twice through the chest. She shrieks; apparently she can still feel pain in this form. She ignores that pain, though, in favor of a massive, sweeping blow with that scythe-like claw that catches Korriban square in the chest and nearly knocks him to the ground! She cackles, but you're all closing in...

Korriban takes a whopping 31 points of damage (yikes!) and the rest of the party is up!

Knowledge (Religion) DC 23:
This unholy abomination is a creature known as a daughter of Urgathoa. The most coveted position in the church of the Pallid Princess, the Daughter of Urgathoa is a title bestowed directly by the goddess herself, a blessing given to certain faithful and fanatic priestesses at the moment of their death. Although they are powerful undead, they have few unique defenses--they do, however, retain some spellcasting power.
